Using an imine-coordination-mediated PSM-pyrolysis strategy to fabricate Mo 2 N-ZnO based catalyst (MZ/CNP- icm ). • The MZ/CNP- icm catalyst was applied for CO 2 cycloaddition reaction. • High activity ascribed to more Mo 2 N with synergistic interaction between Mo 2 N and ZnO. The cycloaddition of CO 2 with epoxides into cyclic carbonates represents an atom-economical and sustainable pathway for carbon utilization, yet it requires catalysts capable of synergistically activating both substrates. Herein, a heterostructured Mo 2 N–ZnO catalyst embedded in N,P-doped carbon (MZ/CNP- icm ) is constructed via an imine-coordination-mediated post-synthetic modification and pyrolysis strategy using a 2D imine-rich Zn-MOF (Zn- hmta ) and phosphomolybdic acid (PMo 12 ). The imine coordination enables molecular-level anchoring of Mo species and creates a nitrogen-rich microenvironment, which directs the phase evolution toward Mo 2 N rather than inactive MoO 3 during pyrolysis. As a result, well-defined Mo 2 N-ZnO heterointerfaces and a defect-rich carbon matrix are formed. Under mild conditions (75 °C, 1 MPa CO 2 ), the catalyst achieves nearly 100% conversion and selectivity, together with a significantly enhanced turnover frequency compared to control samples. Mechanistic studies combining in-situ DRIFTS and 1 H NMR reveal that Zn 2+ sites activate epoxides while Mo 2 N activates CO 2 , and the heterointerface enables efficient coupling of intermediates. The catalytic enhancement originates from the synergistic interplay between interfacial electron transfer and defect-rich active sites. This work provides a general strategy for regulating phase evolution and interfacial structure in MOF-derived catalysts for efficient CO 2 conversion. Mo-based catalysts have received widespread attention for their promising hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) efficiency. However, single Mo-based catalysts still have some shortcomings in terms of catalytic activity. Designing heterostructure is an effective strategy to optimize electron configuration, accelerate HER dynamics and modulate microstructure. Herein, a novel cross-linked sheet-like r-FeMo/NF (Fe 2 N/Mo 2 N/MoO 2 ) electrocatalyst with multiple heterostructures was prepared by a facile two-step method involving hydrothermal growth followed by nitridation, which directly formed the active material on nickel foam (NF). The formation of multiple heterostructures results in the redistribution of electrons between Fe and Mo species, promoting charge transfer and improving HER activity. As a result, the as-prepared r-FeMo/NF catalyst demands a low overpotential of 46.1 mV to drive the current density of 10 mA cm −2 for the HER in 1 M KOH. Moreover, it demonstrates outstanding long-term stability, maintaining excellent performance for 100 h at both 10 and 100 mA cm −2 . This work can provide valuable insights into designing highly efficient electrocatalysts with multiple heterostructures.

Noble metal-free electrocatalysts with high activity are highly desirable for the large-scale application of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Mo 2 C-based nanomaterials have been proved as a promising alternative to noble metal-based electrocatalysts owing to the Pt-resembled d-band density and optimal intermediates-adsorption properties. However, the aggregation and excessive growth of crystals often occur during their high-temperature synthesis procedure, leading to low catalytic utilization. In this study, the ultrafine Mo 2 C/Mo 2 N heterostructure with large surface and interface confined in the N-doped carbon nanofibers (N-CNFs) was obtained by a melamine-assisted method. The synergistic effect of Mo 2 C/Mo 2 N heterostructure and plenty active sites exposed on the surface of ultrafine nanocrystals improves the electrocatalytic activity. Meanwhile, the N-CNFs ensure fast charge transfer and high structural stability during reactions. Moreover, the in-situ synthesis method strengthens the interfacial coupling interactions between Mo 2 C/Mo 2 N heterostructure and N-CNFs, further enhancing the electronic conductivity and electrocatalytic activity. Owing to these advantages, Mo 2 C/Mo 2 N@N-CNFs exhibit excellent HER performance with a low overpotential of 75 mV at a current density of 10 mV cm −2 in alkaline solution, superior to the single phased Mo 2 C counterpart and recently reported Mo 2 C/Mo 2 N based catalysts. This study highlights a new effective strategy to design efficient electrocatalysts via integrating heterostructure, nanostructure and carbon modification.

The reverse water-gas shift reaction (RWGSR) is essential for converting CO 2 into fuels using renewable hydrogen, but it remains challenged by the difficulty of simultaneously maximizing catalyst activity, selectivity, and stability. These limitations stem from thermodynamic constraints – specifically, the Gibbs-Curie-Wulff theorem - which restricts the synthetic accessibility of high-energy micro-faceted nanocrystals via conventional methods. To address this, we introduce a near-surface “quasi-hyperbaric” ammonia strategy that integrates atmospheric-pressure processing with in-situ ammonia decomposition. This approach enables the controlled synthesis of molybdenum nitride nanocrystals with preferentially exposed high-energy (112) microfacets. These facets promote CO 2 activation through a hydrogen-assisted redox mechanism, driven by geometrically confined and stabilized Mo-N/M-O hybrid active sites. The resulting catalyst outperforms the benchmark Pt/CeO₂, which typically suffers from CO selectivity below 92%. Our catalyst achieves near-equilibrium conversion (56%) at a space velocity (24000 ml/g cat /h), with 100% CO selectivity and outstanding stability (≤ 1% deactivation over 250 hours).

Lattice-strain engineering has demonstrated its capability to influence the electronic structure and catalytic performance of electrocatalysts. Herein, we present a facile method for inducing thermal strain in cobalt/molybdenum nitride rod-shaped structures (denoted Co/Mo 2 N) via ammonia-assisted reduction, which effectively modulating the HER performance. The optimized Co/Mo 2 N-500, characterized by 3% tensile lattice strain, demonstrates exceptional HER activity with lower overpotentials of 140 mV and 184 mV at high current density of 1000 mA cm −2 in alkaline freshwater and seawater electrolytes, respectively. Co/Mo 2 N also exhibits excellent long-term durability even at a high current density of 300 mA cm −2 , surpassing its counterparts and benchmark Pt/C catalyst. Density functional theory calculations validate that the tensile strain optimizes the d -band states, water dissociation, and hydrogen adsorption kinetics of the strained Mo 2 N in Co/Mo 2 N, thereby improving its catalytic efficacy. This work provides valuable insights into controlling lattice strain to develop highly efficient electrocatalysts towards advanced electrocatalytic applications.

Herein, PVA-Mo 2 C/Mo 2 N nanospheres with surface roughness are synthesized via a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) involved approach and used for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The average crystallite size of the PVA protected nMo 2 CN nanospheres (6.1 nm) is one third of that of the PVA-Mo 2 C/Mo 2 N without PVA protection (17.9 nm). At 10 mA cm −2 current density, the as-synthesized PVA-Mo 2 C/Mo 2 N nanospheres with surface roughness exhibit HER overpotentials of 132 mV and 142 mV with corresponding Tafel slope of 51.8 mV dec −1 and 50.4 mV dec −1 in acid and alkaline medium, respectively. This high apparent activity can be attributed to the high intrinsic activity originated from the adjacent surface active sites of Mo 2 C and Mo 2 N as well as the large ECSA of PVA-Mo 2 C/Mo 2 N nanospheres with surface roughness.

MoO 2 /Mo 2 N heterojunction anchored on an N-doped porous carbon matrix was successfully developed. • Both heterointerface and strong metal–support interaction modulate Mo electronic states to promote the activation of H 2 O 2 . • Hierarchical pore architecture enables rapid mass transfer. • MoO 2 /Mo 2 N/PNC delivers 100% desulfurization under mild conditions with outstanding reusability. The rational construction of heterojunction catalysts with tailored electronic properties and optimized mass-transfer capability remains a pivotal challenge in oxidative desulfurization (ODS). Herein, we report a MoO 2 /Mo 2 N heterojunction anchored on an N-doped porous carbon matrix (PNC) via a facile one-step pyrolysis method using self-assembled SiO 2 as a template. The intimate heterointerface and robust metal–support interaction synergistically modulate the electronic configuration of Mo sites, promoting H 2 O 2 activation toward reactive oxygen species, while the hierarchical porous architecture ensures efficient reactant diffusion. Benefiting from these synergistic effects, the MoO 2 /Mo 2 N/PNC catalyst achieves complete desulfurization within 15 min under a low O/S molar ratio, substantially outperforming single-phase and bulk counterparts. Moreover, it exhibits broad substrate compatibility (DBT, BT, and 4,6-DMDBT), high tolerance to varying sulfur contents (500–4000 ppm), and excellent recyclability. This work not only offers a high-performance ODS catalyst but also establishes a general heterojunction-on‑carbon strategy for advancing transition-metal-based catalysts in liquid-phase oxidation reactions. Flexible all-solid-state supercapacitors (SCs) have great potential in flexible and wearable electronics due to their safety, flexibility, high power density, and portability. The energy storage properties of SCs are determined mainly by their composition and conductivity as well as the configuration of the integrated electrode material. Herein, a freestanding multilayered film electrode consisting of alternating stacked mesoporous Mo2N nanobelts and rGO nanosheets (MMNNBs/rGO) is described. The electrode has a high mass loading of 95.6 wt% of the Mo2N active material and boasts high areal capacitances of 142 and 98 mF cm−2 at current densities of 1 and 150 mA cm−2, respectively. All-solid-state SCs fabricated by sandwiching two thin and flexible freestanding MMNNBs/rGO hybrid electrodes with a poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/H3PO4/silicotungstic acid (SiWA) gel electrolyte show a high volumetric capacitance of 15.4 F cm−3 as well as energy and power densities of 1.05 mW h cm−3 and 0.035 W cm−3 at a current density of 0.1 A cm−3 based on the volume of the entire cell. After 4000 charging–discharging cycles, the flexible SC retains 85.7% initial capacitance, thus exhibiting good cycling stability. This study provides a versatile method for the fabrication of flexible and high-performance ceramic-based nanohybrid films for SCs, and has immense potential in flexible and wearable electronics.

Phthalic acid esters (PAEs) pose serious health risks to humans and are difficult to remove by conventional sewage treatment processes. Herein, Fe 2 Mo 3 O 8 /MoO 2 /Mo 2 N composite (FMON) derived from bimetallic organic framework was used to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for dibutyl phthalate (DBP) degradation. FMON exhibited an excellent catalytic effect with DBP removal efficiency of 92.4 % within 60 min. Mo 2 N showed a superior ability in promoting Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ redox cycle. The reduction efficiencies of Fe 3+ by Mo 2 N/MoO 2 composite and MoO 2 were 67 %–94 % and 11 %–23 %, respectively, in the homogeneous comparative experiment. Moreover, the ratio of Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ in FMON increased significantly after the catalytic reaction. Fe element doping also enhanced the reuse stability and reduced the metal ion leaching of the catalyst. The degradation of DBP was mediated by a variety of reactive species, of which SO 4 − , OH and O 2 − were dominant. Fe element, Mo element and O vacancies were confirmed to exert significant contributions as active sites in the catalytic process. Three degradation pathways of DBP were obtained by DFT calculation and HPLC-MS analysis. And the toxicity of DBP degradation products was significantly reduced based on the assessment result of Toxicity Estimation Software Tool (T.E.S.T.). This study explored a novel Fe/Mo bimetallic catalyst with friendly Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ cycling for environmental catalysis and provided new ideas for the treatment of PAEs wastewater.
