Tungsten doping generated Mo2C-MoC heterostructure to improve HER performance in alkaline solution

Qingtao Wang,Fangfang Mi,Jian Li,Yanxia Wu,Xiaozhong Zhou,Guofu Ma,Shufang Ren

Renewable hydrogen energy has been regarded as ideal green energy. There is an urgent need for efficient and stable non-noble metal electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Molybdenum carbide (Mo x C) has excellent intrinsic activity and stability, which is expected as one of the ideal candidates to replace Pt. Herein, we report a facile Tungsten (W) doping method to regulate the crystal structure of Mo x C to generate a Mo 2 C-MoC heterostructure. It reduces the charge transfer resistance and regulates adsorption and desorption of hydrogen, thereby promoting the HER in alkaline solution. Besides, the carbon matrix not only increases the conductivity, but also protects the active site of W-Mo x C/C from agglomeration and deactivation due to high temperature. Under alkaline media, the W-Mo x C/C has improved HER catalytic activity. In 1 M KOH, an overpotential of 178 mV is required to reach a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , and the Tafel slope is 54.3 mV dec −1 . Moreover, it has a small charge transfer resistance and good stability. This work develops a multi-effect doping method that generates heterostructure and increases the active sites, which providing a new strategy for the performance regulation of other electrocatalysts.

MOF-derived carbon nanotube bridged Co/MoC@NC composites for enhanced electromagnetic wave absorption

Yiming Guo,Yaowei Zhu,Jun Sun,Yongxing Lin,Xiangyang Li,Gang Liu,Yi Gong,Xian Zhang,Xingyou Tian,Xiaoxiao Li,Lin Chen

Obtaining uniformly dispersed particles within a carbon skeleton using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as a precursor is crucial for constructing multiple heterogeneous interfaces that enhance electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption. Herein, MOF-derived carbon nanotubes (CNTs) bridged cobalt/molybdenum carbide@N-doped carbon (Co/MoC@NC) composites with honeycomb-like porosity were synthesized using an ion-exchange strategy followed by pyrolysis. Theoretical calculations and experimental observations confirm the existence of a heterogeneous interface between MoC and Co. Enhanced Co doping accelerates charge transfer from Co to MoC, thereby increasing interfacial polarization. Furthermore, the CNTs catalytically generated by Co facilitate the formation of conductive pathways between the honeycomb-like porous structure of Co/MoC@NC. This enhances conductivity and optimizes impedance matching. Flexible control of the dielectric properties is achieved by adjusting the level of Co doping, which results in tunable microwave absorption (MA) properties. As a result, the minimum reflection loss ( RL min ) of Co/MoC@NC reaches −68.68 dB at a thickness of 1.83 mm, while the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) is 4.45 GHz at a thickness of 1.85 mm. This study presents a novel approach to utilizing honeycomb-like porous MOF-derived heterojunctions for the precise regulation of MA.

Lignin-derived carbon-supported MoC–FeNi heterostructure as efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction

Jianglin Liu,Jinhui Zhang,Haichao Zhou,Bowen Liu,Huafeng Dong,Xuliang Lin,Yanlin Qin

Developing noble-metal-free electrocatalysts for efficient oxygen evolution reactions (OER) is urgently desired to obtain green hydrogen by water electrolysis. Coupling FeNi catalysts with other transition metals is an effective strategy to improve the OER performance, but the electronic structure regulation of the catalytic center is challenging. Herein, heterostructures catalyst composed of MoC and FeNi alloy embedded in N -doped biochar (denoted as MoC–FeNi@NLC) was in situ synthesized by pyrolysis of lignin-metals coordination complex. MoC–FeNi@NLC displayed an overpotential of 198 mV and a long steady running time of 200 h at 10 mA·cm −2 in alkaline media. Furthermore, MoC-FeNi@NLC has demonstrated excellent Faradaic efficiency (FE) of over 90 %. A voltage of 1.50 V was required based on the MoC–FeNi@NLC and Pt/C coupling system, which was superior to that of commercial noble metal catalysts (Pt/C || Ir/C, 1.57 V). The density functional theory demonstrated that FeNi alloy balanced the adsorption energy of OER intermediates and regulated the orbital overlap of Mo above Fermi level. While the lignin-derived carbon layer prevented the deactivation and dissolution of catalytic center. The construction strategy of transition metal alloys and carbides heterojunction by the assistance of sustainable lignin derivatives and its structure–activity relationship toward OER electrocatalytic process provides a promising and cost-efficient pathway for the design of high-performance and stable OER catalysts.

Microwave-pulse sugar-blowing assisted synthesis of 2D transition metal carbides for sustainable hydrogen evolution

Rong Hu,Huiyu Jiang,Jinglin Xian,Shiyun Mi,Liyun Wei,Guangyu Fang,Jiayue Guo,Siqi Xu,Ziyang Liu,Huanyu Jin,Weilin Xu,Jun Wan

Electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is crucial to clean fuel production. Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides (TMCs) are promising HER electrocatalysts by their excellent intrinsic catalytic activity. However, the synthesis of 2D TMCs requires prolonged high-temperature conditions or rigorous etching processes. Here we achieved an ultra-fast and facile synthesis of ultra-thin carbon-terminated 2D TMCs via a microwave-pulse sugar-blowing method. A series of 2D TMCs are obtained rapidly within 3 min. This method accurately adjusts carbon-layer thickness and facilitates the formation of 2D structures. Accordingly, the electrocatalytic HER activity and stability of TMCs are significantly improved. The 2D W 2 C with 1 nm carbon-layer thickness shows high HER activity and ultra-long durability (100 h) in both acidic and alkaline electrolytes. Furthermore, this microwave-pulse method is a generic synthesis strategy that is demonstrated by the successful preparation of 2D WC, Mo 2 C and MoC.

Direct mechanochemical synthesis of MoO2/MoC heterostructures catalysts with enhanced performance for hydrogen evolution reaction

Peirong Chen,Hao Zhong,Liuzhang Ouyang,Haiwen Li

Interfacial engineering is an effective approach for regulating the electronic structure of molybdenum carbides and promoting the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, the development of a facile, cost-effective, and scalable synthesis method is crucial for industrial applications. In this work, we developed a mechanochemical method for the preparation of a composite of MoO 2 /MoC with superior HER electrocatalytic performance in alkaline solutions. The MoO 2 /MoC composite can be easily formed by ball milling for 1 h at ambient conditions, and this process can be scaled up for large-scale industrialization. The composite construction leads to a redistribution of electrons around the interface, optimizing the adsorption energy and enhancing the HER performance beyond that of Pt/C catalysts. This strategy provides a new route for the simple and efficient preparation of high-activity electrocatalysts.

Phase-Engineered Ru-MoC Heterointerfaces for Efficient Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution by Boosting Interfacial Water Dissociation

Xue Bai,Biao Feng,Jiyao Huang,Jingyi Tian,Yufei Jiang,Youran Yu,Xizhang Wang,Lijun Yang,Hongwen Huang,Zheng Hu,Qiang Wu

Alkaline hydrogen evolution (HER) performance of Ru catalysts is limited by the high activation energy barriers of water dissociation and the poisoning of active sites by OH * intermediates. Herein, the Mo x C nanoclusters with distinct crystalline phases (MoC and Mo 2 C) are supported on hierarchical N-doped carbon nanocages (hNCNC). Long-range disordered Ru nanoclusters are induced to grow on the MoC nanoclusters due to the presence of Mo vacancies, while crystalline Ru nanoclusters grow on both Mo 2 C nanoclusters and hNCNC due to fewer defects. The Ru-MoC/hNCNC achieves an ultralow overpotential (@10 mA cm −2 ) of 20 mV, a high turnover frequency of 21.8 H 2 s −1 and robust durability in 1 M KOH, much superior to the counterpart of Ru-Mo 2 C/hNCNC. The anion-exchange membrane water electrolysis device with Ru-MoC/hNCNC cathode delivers an industrial-scale current of 1 A cm −2 at ≈1.65 V in 1.0 M KOH. The theoretical calculation, together with in situ Raman spectra, reveals that the Ru-MoC heterointerfaces promote the water dissociation kinetics on Mo sites, leading to the detached formation of OH * on MoC and H * on Ru. This spatial decoupling of OH * and H * can mitigate the OH * poisoning of Ru and promote subsequent H 2 formation, thereby demonstrating excellent alkaline HER performance.

Fabrication of nanocomposite MoC–Mo2C@C/Cd0.5Zn0.5S: promoted electron migration and improved photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Tingting Wei,Tingting Zhang,Zhanbin Jin,Fengyan Li,Lin Xu

In this work, we successfully prepared composites of carbon-modified in-phase MoC–Mo2C (MoC–Mo2C@C, MMC) nanosheets with Cd0.5Zn0.5S (ZCS) nanorods. The loading of MMC nanosheets significantly improved the hydrogen production rate of ZCS nanorods. The results showed that the photocatalytic hydrogen production rate of ZCS is the highest when MMC nanosheets are 1 wt% of ZCS nanorods (1-MMC/ZCS), reaching 68.8 mmol h−1 g−1, which is 7.7 times that of pure ZCS nanorods. The 1-MMC/ZCS photocatalyst was measured with Na2S/Na2SO3 as a hole sacrifice reagent under irradiation with 420 nm monochromatic light, and the quantum efficiency of 1-MMC/ZCS was 32.9%. The carbon layer can promote the rapid transfer of photogenerated electrons, and in-phase Mo2C–MoC as the active site can synergistically improve the photocatalytic hydrogen production rate of ZCS. Most Mo2C-based materials are still used in the field of electrocatalysis. This study provides a new idea for exploring new molybdenum-based co-catalyst materials in the field of visible light catalytic hydrogen production.

Construction of Ni2P-MoC/Coal-Based Carbon Fiber Self-Supporting Catalysts for Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution

Xinyue Jia,Mengran Lou,Yang Wang,Ruiying Wang

Efficient and inexpensive electrocatalysts play an important role in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) of electrolytic water splitting. Herein, Ni2P-MoC/coal-based carbon fiber (Ni2P-MoC/C-CF) self-supporting catalysts were obtained by low-temperature phosphorization and high-temperature carbonization. The Mo source and oxidized coal were uniformly dispersed in the carbon support by electrospinning technology. A precursor of Ni was introduced by the impregnation method. The synergistic effect of MoC and Ni2P may reduce the strong hydrogen adsorption capacity of pure MoC and provide a fast hydrogen release process. In addition, the C-CFs prepared by electrospinning can not only prevent the agglomeration of MoC and Ni2P particles at a high temperature but also provide a self-supporting support for the catalyst. As a result, the catalytic performance of the HER was improved greatly, and a low overpotential of 112 mV at 10 mA cm−2was exhibited stably by the Ni2P-MoC/C-CFs. This work not only converts coal into coal-based carbon materials but also provides a feasible pathway for the rational design of large-scale molded hydrogen electrocatalysts. Keywords:molybdenum carbide;nickel phosphide;coal-based carbon fibers;hydrogen evolution reaction;electrocatalysis

High-Performance Hollow MoC/N-Doped Carbon Cocatalysts for Enhanced Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution via CdS Coupling

Shuhe Chen,Yufen Liu,Taiyu Huang,Tao Liu,Siyuan Yang,Xin Cai,Qiongzhi Gao,Xiaosong Zhou,Feng Peng,Shengsen Zhang

Molybdenum carbide (MoC) has attracted significant attention as a cocatalyst for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. However, facile and scalable methods to synthesize hollow MoC materials with high specific surface areas remain limited. Herein, hollow-structured MoC/N-doped carbon (MCN) cocatalysts were innovatively synthesized via high-temperature calcination of MoO3-containing polydopamine (MoO3/PDA) precursors. These MCN materials were subsequently coupled with CdS through a solvothermal process to construct composite photocatalysts (MCN/CdS, denoted as MCS). Under simulated sunlight irradiation (AM 1.5G), the optimized MCS catalyst achieved an exceptional photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 26.4 mmol·g–1·h–1, which is 10.8 times higher than that of the benchmark Pt/CdS catalyst. The MCS catalyst also demonstrated outstanding stability, maintaining efficient hydrogen production after 20 h of continuous illumination. The superior performance of MCS stems from two key advantages of the MCN cocatalyst: (i) its high specific surface area enhances CdS dispersion and provides abundant active sites for hydrogen evolution; (ii) the N-doped carbon matrix broadens light absorption and facilitates charge carrier transport. This work introduces an effective approach for the rapid and mild synthesis of ultrahigh surface area hollow nanospherical transition-metal carbons, providing valuable insights for advanced photocatalytic systems.

Stable Tensile-Strained Pt Single Atomic Layer Catalysts on α-MoC for Efficient Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution

Yaohui Zhao,Jiapeng Huang,Ke Zhang,Yanan Li,Zixin Ge,Yangzi Zheng,Shangdong Ji,Junhao Lu,Yuan Ren,Chao Wu,Mingshang Jin

Developing Pt-based core–shell catalysts with ultralow Pt loading, superior performance, and extended durability holds tremendous potential for advancing electrochemical energy storage and conversion technologies. However, current synthetic limitations persist in achieving atomically efficient Pt monolayer deposition on nonprecious metal substrates, hindering the maximization of Pt atomic utilization for cost-effective catalyst design. Here, we demonstrate a galvanic replacement strategy to synthesize tensile-strained platinum single-atom-layer (Pt SAL) on α-MoC substrates. The Pt SAL catalysts enable cooperative catalysis between adjacent Pt sites while maintaining nearly 100% atomic utilization efficiency. For alkaline hydrogen evolution, the Pt SAL/α-MoC catalyst exhibits optimized reaction energetics, reducing activation barriers for water dissociation, hydrogen adsorption, and H2 desorption compared to typical Pt/C. As a result, the Pt SAL catalysts exhibit superior hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance, with a mass activity of 1.71 A mgPt–1 at an overpotential of 50 mV, surpassing commercial Pt/C by 6.35-fold and single-atom catalysts by 7.68-fold. Remarkably, the Pt SAL catalysts reveal negligible activity decay after 10,000 cycles, with density functional theory (DFT) calculations attributing this stability to strong Pt–Mo interfacial bonding. In situ Raman spectroscopic studies reveal dynamic interfacial water restructuring that accelerates reaction kinetics. This work establishes a versatile synthesis approach for noble metal SAL catalysts and explores their role in designing high-performance electrocatalysts for heterogeneous catalysis.

Phase-controlled synthesis of starch-derived Mo2C–MoC/C heterostructure catalyst for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction

Xiang Zou,Haitong Tang,Junzhi Li,Guichen Gao,Zhibing Geng,Liping Li,Guangshe Li

The electronic structure of molybdenum carbide closely resembles that of Pt, making it a promising candidate material for replacing noble metal catalysts . However, the primary challenge is the controlled and eco-friendly synthesis of molybdenum carbide. Herein, we developed a sustainable and controlled method for synthesizing a heterostructure catalyst for the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) using starch as the raw material. Through a hydrothermal redox reaction and subsequent temperature-programmed treatment under an inert atmosphere , the hexagonal Mo 2 C-cubic MoC heterostructure nanoparticles were dispersed on a carbon matrix. Our investigation into the synthesis process extensively covered the growth of MoO 2 nanocrystals and hydrochar during the hydrothermal redox reaction , as well as the phase evolution during the subsequent temperature-programmed treatment. Electrochemical assessments demonstrated the catalyst's remarkable efficiency for the hydrogen evolution reaction across both acidic and alkaline media, achieving a current density of 10 mA/cm 2 with an overpotential of 139.4 mV in 1 M KOH solution and 160.7 mV in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 solution. Combining a series of electrochemical characterizations and applying the distribution of relaxation times (DRT) analysis to operando electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) data, the superior kinetic performance of the Mo 2 C–MoC/C was demonstrated, outperforming that of single-phase molybdenum carbide. Furthermore, the catalyst has demonstrated remarkable stability even at high current densities in both acidic and alkaline electrolytes , underscoring its potential as a cathode catalyst in both alkaline water electrolyzers and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers.

Fluorescence enantioselective sensing of lactic acid enantiomers by Zn-MOC@CQDs with double chiral building blocks

Xinwen Jia,Mengyun Lu,Wenjing Zhang,Wuduo Zhao,Ajuan Yu,Shusheng Zhang

Chiral carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with –SH, –NH 2 functional groups were grafted onto a metal–organic cage (Zn-MOC) with unsaturated metal sites through coordination bond, and then a novel bichiral composite Zn-MOC@CQDs was constructed for the chiral discrimination of LA enantiomers. Zn-MOC@CQDs exhibited a high fluorescence detection sensitivity for L -LA instead of D -LA, and the enantioselectivity coefficient for LA enantiomers was 2.34. Zn-MOC@CQDs exhibited more excellent enantioselectivity than the single components of CQDs and Zn-MOC, and the key reason may be the chiral synergistic effect between the different chiral building blocks.
