Facile synthesis of a molybdenum phosphide (MoP) nanocomposite Pt support for high performance methanol oxidation

Jinliang Zhu,Shangli Huang,Julian Key,Shuangxi Nie,Shaojian Ma,Pei Kang Shen

Metal phosphides are of great recent interest as promoters to precious metal-driven catalytic oxidation of alcohols in direct alcohol fuel cells. In this work, a novel approach for facile and environmentally friendly synthesis of molybdenum phosphide (MoP) nanocrystals anchored on graphitized carbon is developed by one-step pyrolysis of a phosphorus-containing resin exchanged with Mo5+. A significant promotion effect of MoP on Pt in methanol electrooxidation is observed. The Pt–MoP/C catalyst exhibits ultrahigh electroactivity, and compared to commercial Pt/C, this catalyst reaches a −140 mV more negative onset potential and has 10 times the mass activity at 0.4 V vs. SCE and 5.1 times the peak mass activity. In addition, Pt–MoP/C has also excellent stability and CO tolerance, including a peak mass activity retention of 81.4% after 1000 cycles as compared to that of 51.6% on commercial Pt/C and a 140 mV more negative COad oxidation potential. The noteworthy promotion effect of MoP on Pt in methanol electrooxidation is also evaluated by theoretical calculations.

Highly efficient nanosized MoS2/MoP heterocatalyst for enhancing hydrogen evolution reaction over a wide pH range

Mingyuan Zhu,Lijun Yu,Simiao Sha,Riyue Ge,Chi Cheng,Liming Dai,Sean Li,Bin Liu,Zhixue Qu,Wenxian Li

Energy consumption associated with the catalysts contributes partly to the high ohmic resistance arising from the low conductivity of the catalyst and poor charge transfer between nanoparticles, which has been difficult to study due to the complicated nanostructured framework of the catalysts. We constructed a novel heterostructure electrocatalyst (MoS 2 /MoP@NC) composed of nanosized MoS 2 /MoP heterostructures anchoring on hierarchical N-doped carbon for smoothing electron transfer in boosting hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). With the merits of large surface area, rapid charge transfer, and optimized electronic structure induced by charge transfer across the sufficient interface, the optimal MoS 2 /MoP@NC (MoSP) catalyst shows a competitive overpotential of 140 (0.5 M H 2 SO 4 ), 76 (1.0 M KOH), and 103 mV (0.5 M NaCl &1.0 M KOH) at 10 mA cm −2 , respectively. Raman experiment and Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal the formation of Mo-S-Mo bonds between MoS 2 and MoP, which favor enhancing the Femi level to facilitate the electron transfer, therefore regulating the electronic structure for the optimization of adsorption energy of hydrogen intermediate. Based on the experimental results, we constructed an energy consumption model of catalysts, where energy consumption comes from three aspects. The heterostructure design decreases the energy consumption of the catalysts greatly compared to the single-phase Mo-based catalyst of MoS 2 (78.0%) and MoP (45.2%) in alkaline electrolytes.

Oxygen-incorporated defect-rich MoP for highly efficient hydrogen production in both acidic and alkaline media

Xiangyong Zhang,Zhuangzhi Wu,Dezhi Wang

Molybdenum phosphide (MoP) has attracted a lot of attentions as a potential electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Although great efforts have been made to improve the HER activity of MoP, the rational design of MoP catalysts with either more active sites or higher conductivity is still challenging. Herein, a defect-rich structure (DR-MoP) is synthesized via a novel and facile low-temperature calcination strategy. Moreover, the DR-MoP is also proved to be incorporated with oxygen. The defect-rich structures could provide more active sites, and the incorporation of oxygen could further enhance the intrinsic conductivity. Thus, the DR-MoP catalyst shows outstanding HER activity and stability in both acidic and alkaline media , making it a good alternative to replace the precious-metal catalysts. Besides, the formation mechanism of DR-MoP has been discussed by controlling different annealing temperatures. This work paves a novel and effective way for improving the HER performance of transition metal phosphides by defect engineering.

Ionic Liquid-Assisted Synthesis of Hierarchical One-Dimensional MoP/NPC for High-Performance Supercapacitor and Electrocatalysis

Anning Jiang,Zegao Wang,Qiang Li,Mingdong Dong

The development of advanced nanomaterials with multifunctionalities is an intriguing and challenging approach for utilizing clean and sustainable energy. Herein, we demonstrate the construction of a unique hierarchically structured one-dimensional molybdenum phosphide (MoP) through an ionic liquid-assisted synthesis method. Further, encapsulating with an N, P-codoped carbon shell to form a hybrid multifunctional material (MoP/NPC) was performed for the supercapacitor and electrocatalysis. The as-synthesized MoP/NPC nanostructures possessed a large number of active sites and a shorter ionic diffusion length. As a proof-of-concept application, the symmetric all-solid-state supercapacitor device assembled using MoP/NPC delivers a superior-specific capacitance of 544 F g–1 at 0.5 A g–1, a high specific energy of 76 W h kg–1 at a power density of 503 W kg–1, and outstanding cycling stability. Moreover, MoP/NPC also displays excellent electrocatalytic activity and stability toward hydrogen evolution reaction in a wide pH range (0–14). This study demonstrates an effective strategy for developing transition-metal phosphide-based nanomaterials with outstanding electrochemical performance for future energy conversion and storage.

Synergistic Pt-MoP Interaction on Carbon Support Enables High-Performance Hydrogen Evolution with Reduced Platinum Loading

Niu Liu,Bo Ning,Xiaolei Guo,Zhen-Feng Huang,Lun Pan,Ruijie Gao,Chengxiang Shi,Xiangwen Zhang,Ji-Jun Zou

Proton exchange membrane water electrolysis is a sustainable method to produce green hydrogen. However, its widespread application is constrained by the high cost and limited durability of Pt-based catalysts used in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this study, we developed a Pt-incorporated MoP catalyst supported on Ketjen black (Pt-MoP/C), containing only 8.1 wt.% Pt. This catalyst significantly outperforms the conventional 20 wt.% Pt/C, achieving an overpotential of 3 mV at a current density of 10 mA·cm −2 and a Tafel slope of 31.8 mV·dec −1 compared to 16 mV@10 mA·cm −2 and 33.8 mV·dec −1 for Pt/C. XPS analysis revealed a strong interaction between Pt and MoP, leading to increased electron density at the Pt sites. This synergy effect between the Pt and MoP enhances HER activity. Moreover, the Pt-MoP/C catalyst maintained its catalytic activity after 300 h of stability testing. These findings provide valuable insights into the development of innovative Pt-based catalysts for improved HER performance. Graphical A novel Pt-incorporated MoP catalyst (Pt-MoP/C) with a low Pt content of 8.1 wt.% demonstrates superior performance for water electrolysis over commercial 20 wt.% Pt/C. Synergistic electron transfer from MoP to Pt enhances Pt's electron density, enabling a current density of 10 mA·cm−2 at a remarkably low overpotential of 3 mV. This work offers key insights for developing innovative, low-Pt catalysts for efficient hydrogen evolution.

MoP quantum dots based multifunctional efficient electrocatalyst for stable and long-life flexible lithium–sulfur batteries

Wenqiang Lu,Liu Wang,Chunhong Han,Yunfeng Chao,Chunyang Xu,Jianhua Zhu,Yapeng Tian,Zhuosen Wang,Xinwei Cui

The commercialization of lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries is challenging, owing to factors like the poor conductivity of S, the 'shuttle effect', and the slow reaction kinetics. To address these challenges, MoP quantum dots were decorated on hollow carbon spheres (MoPQDs/C) in this study and used as an efficient lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) adsorbents and catalysts. In this approach polysulfides are effectively trapped through strong chemisorption and physical adsorption while simultaneously facilitating LiPSs conversion by enhancing the reaction kinetics. MXene serves as a flexible physical barrier (MoPQDs/C@MXene), further enhancing the confinement of LiPSs. Moreover, both materials are conductive, significantly facilitating electron and charge transfer. Additionally, the flexible MoPQDs/C@MXene–S electrode offers a large specific surface area for sulfur loading and withstand volume expansion during electrochemical processes. As a result, the MoPQDs/C@MXene–S electrode exhibits excellent long-term cyclability and maintains a robust specific capacity of 992 mA h g −1 even after 800cycles at a rate of 1.0C (1C = 1675 mA g −1 ), with a minimal capacity decay rate of 0.034 % per cycle. This work proposes an efficient strategy to fabricate highly efficient electrocatalysts for advanced Li–S batteries.

Hollow Tubular Engineering and Electronic Structure Modulation of Vanadium-Incorporated MoP for Boosting Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution

Wei Yang,Guimin Wang,Siyi Yang,Ganceng Yang,Haijing Yan,Yanqing Jiao

Synergistically optimizing electronic structure and exposing abundant active sites is a promising route to enhance electrocatalytic activity, yet remains challenging. Herein, a hierarchical tubular structure of vanadium-incorporated molybdenum phosphide (V-MoP) was successfully constructed for highly effectively alkaline hydrogen evolution. Molecular self-assembly of a V-substituted Keggin-type polyoxometalate (POM) with a simple organic ligand was exploited to induce a hollow tubular precursor and trigger precise V doping by virtue of the intrinsic structural features of POMs, thereby realizing simultaneous morphology engineering and electronic structure modulation. The unique open-ended hollow tubular structure, which furnishes both internal and external surfaces and superhydrophilicity, increases the exposure of electrochemical active sites, promotes rapid electrolyte penetration and shortens mass transfer pathways. Moreover, V doping effectively modulates the electronic structure of MoP, further renders Mo and P sites more electron-rich, meanwhile triggering the coexistence of V3+and V5+, which further promotes water dissociation and hydrogen evolution. Consequently, the V-MoP catalyst exhibits significantly enhanced activity, far beyond that of pristine bulk MoP and bulk V-MoP, and even surpasses that of commercial 20% Pt/C at high current densities. This work provides a feasible strategy for designing advanced electrocatalysts with tailored morphology and tunable electronic structures.

Heterogeneous VN/MoP Nanoparticles Embedded in a Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Framework Achieve Efficient Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Qingqing Liu,Liyun Cao,Koji Kajiyoshi,Dewei Chu,Yijun Liu,Yong Zhao,Jianfeng Huang,Liangliang Feng

Amidst escalating global energy demands, the electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) presents a sustainable pathway for clean hydrogen production. The rational design of heterostructured electrocatalysts is a promising strategy to overcome the inherent limitations of single-component catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). While vanadium nitride (VN) exhibits Pt-like electronic properties, insufficient electron density at V sites impedes hydrogen adsorption. Conversely, molybdenum phosphide (MoP) features a moderate Mo–P bond strength with intermediates, facilitating hydrogen desorption kinetics. Herein, we construct a VN/MoP heterointerface embedded in a nitrogen-doped carbon framework (VN/MoP@NC) via a one-step solid-phase sintering approach to synergistically modulate the electronic structures. Experimental results confirm that interfacial electron transfer from MoP to VN enriches the electron density of V sites, thereby optimizing the hydrogen adsorption free energy (ΔGH*). The heterojunction optimizes interfacial charge distribution and adsorption energetics, enabling an overpotential of 111 mV at 10 mA cm–2 in alkaline media with 50 h of stability. Furthermore, in a practical membrane electrode assembly (MEA), it delivers a high current density of 1000 mA cm–2 at a low cell voltage of 2.18 V for alkaline water electrolysis. This work not only demonstrates the effectiveness of electronic coupling in heterostructure engineering but also validates the catalyst’s promise for realistic hydrogen production.

Unraveling the role of MoP/Mo2N heterojunctions in enhancing the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity of CdS

Yonggang Lei,Yongchun Tong,Qingyun Wang,Yuqi Han,Xiaojuan Feng,Zhen Li,Shoubo Li,Kim Hoong Ng

A well-engineered heterojunction cocatalysts play a pivotal role in enabling efficient H 2 evolution over semiconductor materials. Herein, an effective cocatalyst derived from MoP/Mo 2 N heterostructure was proposed and incorporated to CdS for a drastically enhanced H 2 production from water under visible light irradiation. By optimizing catalytic formulation, the best-performing CdS@MoP/Mo 2 N(3 wt%) demonstrates a remarkable H 2 production rate of 10653 μmol h⁻¹g⁻¹ , representing an 18-fold enhancement compared to bare CdS. This remarkably high activity outperforms CdS enhanced by conventional noble metal cocatalysts (e.g., Ag, Au, Pt) and MoS x -based materials, underscoring the outstanding cocatalytic effect promised by MoP/Mo 2 N. In parallel, the optimized photocatalyst also achieved a remarkable stability for H 2 production over 9 consecutive cycles with a total irradiation time of 45 h, alongside a noticeably high apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 13.5 % upon irradiated by 420 nm-light. According to analysis, these enhanced performances are ascribed to the promoted interfacial charge transfer kinetics and significantly reduced hydrogen evolution overpotential of CdS@MoP/Mo 2 N(3 wt%), both of which contribute to the superior catalytic activity. Theoretical investigation also suggested a much-facilitated electron shuttling and proton desorption with MoP/Mo 2 N attached to CdS photocatalyst. Overall, this work demonstrates that our developed MoP/Mo 2 N heterostructure cocatalysts can effectively serve as alternatives to noble metals(Ag, Au, Pt) in solar-driven photocatalytic hydrogen production.

In-situ transformation into MoP/MoS2 heterogeneous structure with rich S-vacancy enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction

Juan Du,Qiao Han,Cheng Liu,Hongda Wu,Lufan zheng,Zhanxu Yang

The surface modification strategy has broken through the restriction of hydrogen evolution activity caused by low conductivity inert surfaces of MoS 2 during hydrogen evolution reaction . In this work, a new strategy for regulating the interface structure between MoS 2 and MoP using sulfur vacancy is proposed, which is derived from the synthesis of molybdenum disulfide nanotubes with rich S-vacancy (Sv-MoS 2 ) by reduction. Subsequently, Sv-MoS 2 was phosphated by introducing a P source, and the obtained (MoP/Sv-MoS 2 -8) composite. The introduction of P atoms provides more active sites for hydrogen adsorption and desorption by replacing S atoms to form (Mo-P) covalent bonds , further increase the number of S vacancies to activate the inert interface. The synthesized MoP/Sv-MoS 2 -8 has excellent catalytic activity and good cyclic stability, showing a lower Tafel slope of 60 mV·dec −1 at a current density of 10 mA·cm −2 , and no potential attenuation after the cyclic stability test for 24 h. The excellent HER performance is mainly due to the synergistic effect of P atom doping and S vacancy, which greatly reduces the energy barrier of the Volmer step and the adsorption/desorption of the H* intermediate step.

MoP–MoS2@N-doped carbon heterostructures via sulfur-mediated phosphorization: Synergistic interfaces for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction

Jiabo Wang,Wenxin Wang,Zhentao Liu,Dong Wang,Yingzhi Shi,Li Chen

Rational heterointerface design is an effective strategy to improve electrocatalytic water splitting. MoP and MoS 2 show “Pt-like” activity but are limited by slow alkaline water dissociation and a high hydrogen-adsorption barrier, respectively. Here, we synthesize MoP–MoS 2 @N-doped carbon (MoP–MoS 2 @NC) heterojunctions through a cysteine-assisted multi-anion coordination and in situ carbonization route. This strategy differs from traditional phosphorization-sulfurization or post-assembly routes. l -cysteine supplies S, N, and C and directs precursor formation, inducing stepwise Mo reduction and programmable MoP/MoS 2 growth during annealing. Precise regulation of the multi-anion coordination environment is realized by adjusting the cysteine dosage, which yields optimal MoP/MoS 2 interfacial coupling. Additionally, cysteine carbonization forms conductive N-doped carbon that further improves performance. The optimized catalyst delivers 115 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and a 66.98 mV dec −1 Tafel slope with excellent stability. This study presents a concise route to multi-anion-derived heterojunction catalysts for efficient hydrogen evolution.

Shuai Wang,Jia Wang,Ping Li,Zexing Wu,Xien Liu

Efficient electrocatalyst plays a significant role on the development of hydrogen energy. In this work, an N,P-codoped carbon layer coupled with MoP nanoparticles (MoP/NPCs) was prepared through a facile high-temperature pyrolysis treatment. The obtained MoP/NPCs presented efficient activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), with low onset potential of 90 mV, and a small Tafel slope (71 mV dec−1), as well as extraordinary stability in acidic electrolyte. This work provides a new facile strategy for the design and synthesis of sustainable and effective molybdenum-based electrocatalysts as alternatives to non-Pt catalysts for HER.Keywords:electrocatalysts;hydrogen evolution reaction;carbon layer;molybdenum phosphide
