The evaluation of the nanoscale forces between a silica probe and hematite nanoparticle (NP) thin layer-coated mica (Hm-mica) in the presence of structurally different natural organic matter (NOM) molecules and inorganic and organic guanidinium (Gd+) cations determines the efficiency of cementing agents towards stable soil aggregate formation. The force–distance curves showed that electrostatic repulsions between the probe and the 5 and 50 mg C per L humic acid (HA)-modified Hm-mica substrates were initiated at higher probe–substrate separations relative to tannic acid (TA)-modified Hm-mica substrates. The abundance of highly ionizable polar carboxylate moieties in HA compared to TA contributed to stronger probe–substrate repulsion. The ion-specific interactions of the weakly hydrated divalent cations with the adsorbed HA diminished the probe–substrate electrostatic repulsion. However, possible exposure of hydrophobic domains contributed to weak adhesion with the silica probe. The maximum adhesion of 0.11 ± 0.04 mN m−1 was recorded in 5 mg C per L HA-modified Hm-mica in the presence of Ca2+. Nevertheless, 50 mg C per L TA modified Hm-mica exhibited a significant increase in adhesion to 1.44 ± 0.5 mN m−1 in the presence of Ba2+. The porous nanostructures produced due to Ba2+-assisted molecular gelation of TA possibly contributed to the strong adhesion. Unlike inorganic cations, organic Gd+ has increased probe–substrate adhesion considerably to 3.13 ± 0.29 mN m−1 in 50 mg C per L HA-modified Hm-mica. The porous nanotubular structures produced by HA in the presence of Gd+ possibly maintained the interfacial water content and facilitated adhesion with the silica probe. Thermodynamic parameters derived from the reactions between the NOM and the cations further supplemented the force data. Therefore, interactions of sesquioxide nanominerals with soil biodegradation products can improve the environmental quality and mitigate the effects of destabilizing forces.

In this study, a novel Janus membrane was developed by constructing Cu-1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (Cu-BTC) metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) hydrophilic coating on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane. The Cu-BTC@PVA/PVDF Janus membrane showed a rougher surface with an in-air water contact angle of 27.4˚ and an underwater oil contact angle of 152.8°. The Cu-BTC had minimal impact on mass transfer efficiency in MD process, and the Janus membrane exhibited excellent anti-oil-fouling and anti-NOM-fouling properties. The formation of the hydration layer, the slip boundary effect, and the electrostatic repulsion by the hydrophilic serrated interface were the main antifouling mechanisms. The hydrophobic-hydrophobic interaction was the main fouling mechanism of PVDF membrane for both oil and NOM. Sodium alginate (SA) displayed severe fouling with a compacted fouling layer in PVDF membrane due to the concentration polarization (CP) and gel layer formation. Inorganic fouling was the predominant fouling for the high CP and inorganic–organic coupling. While humic acid (HA) surpassed SA in Cu-BTC@PVA/PVDF Janus membrane for the stronger hydrogen bond, hydrophobic-hydrophobic interaction was significantly alleviated. Inorganic fouling was also significantly alleviated due to the strong electrostatic repulsion effect. The prepared Janus membrane has great potential to promote MD dealing with hypersaline industrial wastewaters containing complex organic matters.

As promising in-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) technologies , sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) are applied in wastewater treatment and groundwater remediation in recent years. In this contribution, we report for the first time that, thermally activated persulfate oxidation of phenol in the presence of nitrite (NO 2 − ), an anion widely present in natural waters, could lead to the formation of nitrated by-products including 2-nitrophenol (2-NP), 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), 2,4-dinitrophenol (2,4-DNP), and 2,6-dinitrophenol (2,6-DNP). Nitrogen dioxide radical (NO 2 • ), arising from SO 4 •− scavenging by NO 2 − , was proposed to be involved in the formation of nitrophenols as a nitrating agent. It was observed that nitrophenols accounted for approximately 70% of the phenol transformed under reaction conditions of [NO 2 − ] = 200 μM, [PS] = 2 mM and temperature of 50 °C. Increasing the concentration of NO 2 − remarkably enhanced the formation of nitrophenols but did not affect the transformation rate of phenol significantly. The degradation of phenol and the formation of nitrophenols were significantly influenced by persulfate dosage, solution pH and natural organic matter (NOM). Further studies on the degradation of other phenolic compounds , including 4-chlorophenol (4-CP), 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (4-HBA), and acetaminophen (ATP), verified the formation of their corresponding nitrated by-products as well. Therefore, formation of nitrated by-products is probably a common but overlooked phenomenon during SO 4 •− -based oxidation of phenolic compounds in the presence of NO 2 − . Nitroaromatic compounds are well known for their carcinogenicity , mutagenicity and genotoxicity, and are potentially persistent in the environment. The formation of nitrated organic by-products in SR-AOPs should be carefully scrutinized, and risk assessment should be carried out to assess possible health and ecological impacts.

The interaction of disinfectants with bromide/iodide ions and natural organic matter (NOM) generates brominated/iodinated disinfection byproducts (Br/I-DBPs), known for their heightened cytotoxicity and genotoxicity relative to chlorinated DBPs. This study investigated Br/I-DBP formation during sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) disinfection of lignin-containing synthetic water by quantifying adsorbable organic halogens (AOX) and trihalomethanes (THMs). Disinfection of bromide-containing water yielded a bromide ion (Br−) to adsorbable organic bromine (AOBr) conversion rate of approximately 60%, with bromine within THMs accounting for about 30% of the total AOBr, indicating significant brominated DBP formation where THMs represent a major fraction. Conversely, iodide ion (I−) conversion to adsorbable organic iodine (AOI) is minimal, suggesting negligible iodinated DBP formation under NaClO disinfection. Examination of key parameters revealed that brominated THM (Br-THM) formation decreased with increasing lignin concentration, while iodinated THM (I-THM) formation increased. The effect of chlorine dose differed: Br-THM formation exhibited an initial increase followed by a decrease at higher doses, whereas I-THM formation consistently decreased. Both Br-THM and I-THM formation increased with higher bromide or iodide ion concentration and with increasing pH. These results highlight the distinct pathways and influencing factors governing brominated versus iodinated DBP formation in lignin-containing waters disinfected with hypochlorite.
