NaNbO 3 (NN)-based dielectric ceramics for energy storage have garnered significant interest due to their high saturation polarization, low residual polarization, and superior breakdown strength ( E b ). However, the low recoverable energy storage density ( W rec ) and efficiency ( η ) significantly limited their practical application. Herein, BiFeO 3 (BF) was incorporated into NN to optimize the energy storage performance. The NN-BF ceramics exhibited pronounced antiferroelectric (AFE) relaxor phase, alongside grain size reduction and E b enhancement, which contributed to a significant increase of W rec and η . Specially, the optimum W rec of 4.43 J/cm³ and η of 71.51 % were achieved at the composition of 0.9NN-0.1BF. Besides, stable energy storage performance was maintained over a wide temperature range (20–120 °C). These results highlight the potential of NN-BF relaxor AFE ceramics as promising candidates for high-performance energy storage applications.

Magnesium hydride (MgH 2 ) is considered a promising solid-state hydrogen storage material owing to its high hydrogen storage capacity and abundant Mg resources. However, its practical application is still limited by sluggish low-temperature hydrogen absorption/desorption kinetics, high dehydrogenation temperature, and insufficient cycling stability. Although NaNbO 3 -based catalysts have recently shown potential for improving the hydrogen storage performance of MgH 2 , the effect of processing-controlled NaNbO 3 morphology on catalyst dispersion, interfacial contact, and hydrogen absorption/desorption kinetics remains unclear. Herein, morphology-regulated NaNbO 3 catalysts were synthesized via a hydrothermal-calcination route by varying the hydrothermal temperature and introduced into MgH 2 through high-energy ball milling. Among the investigated samples, the composite containing 7 wt% NaNbO 3 prepared at 200°C (MgH 2 –7 wt.% NaNbO 3 -200) exhibited fast and reversible hydrogen storage performance, absorbing 5.0 wt% H 2 within 12 s at 200°C and desorbing 6.0 wt% H 2 within 6 min at 300°C. After 30 cycles, it retained 6.12 wt% H 2 , corresponding to 89.7% of its initial dehydrogenation capacity, and showed an apparent dehydrogenation activation energy of 86.96 kJ mol −1 . The enhanced performance is mainly attributed to improved MgH 2 /NaNbO 3 interfacial contact, together with a possible contribution from partially reduced Nb-containing species formed during repeated hydrogen sorption.

The NaNbO 3 –SrSnO 3 –Bi 0.5 Na 0.5 TiO 3 (NN–SS–BNT) ferroelectrics were synthesized by a solid-state reaction process, and the effect of NN–SS–BNT and/or NiFe 2 O 4 (NF) particles as fillers on the output property of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) films was investigated. It was found that the 0.8(NN–SS)–0.2BNT ceramic possessed a highest dielectric constant value of 654 at 10 kHz in this research. The above inorganic particles could effectively enhance the electrical output values of PDMS , and especially the output voltage of NN–SS–BNT/NF/PDMS film was significantly higher than that of the PDMS film. The voltage value of NN–SS–BNT/NF/PDMS film with weight ratio of 10/5/85 was measured approximately 335 V.

Dielectric ceramics with both excellent energy storage and optical transmittance have attracted much attention in recent years. However, the transparent Pb-free energy-storage ceramics were rare reported. In this work, we prepared transparent relaxor ferroelectric ceramics (1 − x )Bi 0.5 Na 0.5 TiO 3 – x NaNbO 3 (BNT– x NN) by conventional solid-state reaction method. We find the NN-doping can enhance the polarization and breakdown strength of BNT by suppressing the grain growth and restrained the reduction of Ti 4+ to Ti 3+ . As a result, a high recoverable energy-storage density of 5.14 J/cm 3 and its energy efficiency of 79.65% are achieved in BNT–0.5NN ceramic at 286 kV/cm. Furthermore, NN-doping can promote the densification to improve the optical transmittance of BNT, rising from ∼26% ( x = 0.2) to ∼32% ( x = 0.5) in the visible light region. These characteristics demonstrate the potential application of BNT– x NN as transparent energy-storage dielectric ceramics.

Capacitors with dielectrics as media have drawn great attention for the energy-storage application of high-power electronic systems. Sodium niobate (NaNbO 3 ) is the famous antiferroelectric with more phases and phase transitions, but without perfect recoverable energy storage density W rec and efficiency η . Herein, the relaxor ternary NaNbO 3 -LaFeO 3 -Sr(Fe 0.5 Nb 0.5 )O 3 ceramics are constructed by employing domain and domain wall engineering for integrating the merits of relaxors and antiferroelectrics. The phase transforms from orthorhombic P bcm to P mmn, and relaxor characters are revealed by the rotations of domains and the movements of domain walls. Particularly important, 0.88NaNbO 3 -0.096LaFeO 3 -0.024Sr(Fe 0.5 Nb 0.5 )O 3 demonstrates the great properties of high W rec as 2.645 J/cm 3 and super η as 80.7% at 230 kV/cm, less than the large electric breakdown strength E b of 235 kV/cm. These results suggest that NaNbO 3 -based ceramics are suitable for advanced capacitors, and the feasible strategy of domain and domain wall engineering is developed to provide novel energy storage dielectrics.

The ongoing miniaturization and integration of electronic devices are imposing stringent demands on the energy storage performance of dielectric ceramics under low electric fields. NaNbO 3 (NN), an environmentally friendly and low-cost antiferroelectric (AFE) dielectric ceramic, shows significant potential in this context. However, the instability of its AFE P -phase under low electric fields results in unfavorable polarization behavior, which limits its energy storage performance. To overcome this limitation, we introduced the perovskite ferroelectric material Bi 0.5 Na 0.5 TiO 3 (BNT) with high maximum polarization ( P max ) into the NN matrix. With increasing BNT content, the crystal structure transitions from the AFE P -phase to a more stable AFE R -phase. This phase transition is accompanied by enhanced relaxor behavior, which in turn leads to slimmer polarization–electric field ( P-E ) hysteresis loops and a reduced remnant polarization ( P r ). In addition, the P max of NN ceramic is also enhanced,. The 0.85NaNbO 3 -0.15Bi 0.5 Na 0.5 TiO 3 (NN-0.15BNT) ceramic exhibits a P max of 16.73 μC/cm 2 at 100 kV/cm, a value approximately three times higher than that of pure NN ceramic ( P max = 5.63 μC/cm 2 ). Consequently, under a low electric field of 100 kV/cm, the NN-0.15BNT ceramic achieves a recoverable energy storage density ( W rec ) of 0.65 J/cm 3 and an efficiency ( η ) of 87.6%, representing nearly fourfold ( W rec = 0.16 J/cm 3 for NN) and twofold ( η = 45.1% for NN) enhancements, respectively, over pure NN. The achieved performance is competitive with other lead-free relaxor ferroelectrics under similar low-field conditions. The synergistic optimization strategy proposed in this work provides a valuable guideline for designing high-performance energy storage ceramics suitable for low-electric-field applications.

Addressing the pressing concerns of energy shortages and environmental contamination remains critical for achieving sustainable societal development. Combining ferroelectric/piezoelectric catalysts with light-driven materials has emerged as a promising strategy to enhance their synergistic catalytic performance. In this study, we developed a piezoelectric NaNbO 3 /TiO 2 heterojunction for multimodal energy harvesting and catalytic applications. The optimized composite demonstrated excellent piezo-photocatalytic activity through effective coupling of solar and mechanical energy. Under concurrent solar illumination and ultrasonic excitation, the heterojunction catalyst achieved over 96 % degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) within 60 min, exhibiting significantly enhanced performance compared to the individual NaNbO 3 or TiO 2 components. Moreover, the composite maintained its degradation efficiency through multiple recycling cycles. Mechanistic studies revealed that •O 2 - and h + are the primary active species during the degradation process. This study offers a feasible approach to enhancing photocatalytic performance through mechanical vibration, while contributing to the advancement and utilization of piezoelectric materials for multimodal energy harvesting.

NaNbO 3 -based antiferroelectric ceramics are promising candidates for high-performance energy storage capacitors due to their environmental friendliness and low cost despite their current energy storage properties being inferior to those of their lead-based and AgNbO 3 -based counterparts. Typically, the antiferroelectric phase in NaNbO 3 ceramics is not stable and the characteristic double hysteresis loops are seldom observed. In this work, the antiferroelectricity was improved by reducing the polarizability, resulting in well-developed double hysteresis loops in 0.94NaNbO 3 –0.06(K 0.5 Bi 0.5 )SnO 3 ceramics. To further improve the energy storage properties, defect engineering was performed for 0.94NaNbO 3 –0.06(K 0.5 Bi 0.5 )SnO 3 by substituting Na + with La 3+ and introducing Nb vacancies. As a result, the stability of the field-induced ferroelectric phase was reduced, and the energy storage properties were enhanced. The strategy of combining polarizability design and defect engineering can be a promising approach for optimizing NaNbO 3 -based antiferroelectric ceramics.

Moderate Mn doping at x = 0.01 pins ferroelectric domains, yielding slim hysteresis loops and optimal energy-storage efficiency. • Higher Mn doping of x ≥ 0.02 induces a phase transition of coexisting AFE P and FE Q phases, in which the FE Q phase can broaden hysteresis loops and increase energy-storage density. • With increasing doping content of Mn, the site of Mn substitution transitions from A site to B site. (1- x )NaNbO 3 - x MnO 2 ceramics were synthesized via solid-state reaction method. X-ray diffraction with Rietveld refinement shows that increasing Mn content induces a phase transition from a single antiferroelectric P phase ( Pbcm ) to the coexistence of P and ferroelectric Q phases ( P2 1 ma ). Scanning electron microscopy indicates that Mn doping promotes grain growth. Dielectric patterns demonstrate that moderate Mn doping with x = 0.01 effectively suppresses leakage current and reduces dielectric loss (tanδ = 0.526 at 25 °C and 56.4 MHz). Electrical measurements show that the composition of x = 0.01 achieves the optimal energy-storage efficiency, and the composition of x = 0.025 attains the recoverable energy-storage density of 0.531 J/cm 3 . The study illustrates that Mn doping tunes phase composition and defects, thereby optimizing the energy-storage properties of lead-free NaNbO 3 -based ceramics.

Dielectric capacitors have been widely employed in advanced pulse power technology and electronic devices. Nevertheless, the insufficient recoverable energy storage density and efficiency pose a major obstacle for realizing further miniaturization and integration. Herein, multilayer structured NaNbO 3 -based ceramics, composed of random and textured layers with identical chemical compositions, were prepared via the tape casting technique. As a result, in the sample with two random layers outside and one textured layer in middle, a remarkable recoverable energy storage density of 11.9 J/cm 3 with an efficiency of 76.8 % is achieved concurrently at an electric field of 728 kV/cm. The finite element simulation implicates that this approach effectively tunes local electric potential, electric field and polarization distributions. More importantly, the investigated ceramics exhibited benign stability over a wide temperature range (20–100 °C), frequency range (1–500 Hz) and cycling up to 10 5 cycles. This work not only provides a multilayer structured ceramic applicable to novel high-performance dielectric capacitors, but also proposes a feasible strategy for regulating the local electric field and polarization distributions and finally boosting the energy storage performance.

Multimodal luminescent (MML) materials have attracted significant attention in anti-counterfeiting applications due to their high sensitivity, concealability, and compatibility. However, limited understanding of their mechanisms hinders rational material design and further advancement. Herein, we report that NaNbO3: Pr3+ phosphors, synthesized via solid-state reaction, exhibit distinctive pressure-responsive MML behaviors, encompassing photoluminescence (PL), persistent luminescence (PersL), and mechanoluminescence (ML). Under UV irradiation at increasing pressure, the PL intensity exhibits a volcano-shaped trend, peaking at approximately 4.5 GPa. After the irradiation is terminated, both the PersL intensity and decay time remain nearly unchanged. Conversely, the ML intensity decreases exponentially with pressure and becomes almost completely quenched around 4.0 GPa. In situ high-pressure structural and spectroscopic analyses indicate that the distinctive MML phenomena likely arise from the different pressure sensitivities of the coordination environments associated with deep traps and shallow traps, which offers insights into the underlying mechanism of MML materials. Furthermore, the integration of multiple luminescence modes enables rich and tunable emission responses, paving the way for advanced stress-sensing platforms and high-security anti-counterfeiting technologies.

With the rapid development of electric vehicles, power electronics, and medical devices, high-energy-density capacitors have attracted considerable research and engineering attention. In this investigation, we added surface-coated BNT-NN ((Bi0.5Na0.5)TiO3–NaNbO3) nanoparticles into the poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) matrix to fabricate BNT-NN/PVDF-HFP nanocomposites. We found that the composite with ultralow contents of BNT-NN (0.5 wt %) exhibited an ultrahigh energy density of 36.94 J cm–3 at 800 mV m–1, which is 17.5% higher than that of the pristine PVDF-HFP film. However, as the content of BNT-NN nanoparticles increased to 1%, the energy density decreased by 10.9% to 32.9 J cm–3 at 750 mV m–1. Compared with other PVDF-based nanocomposite films reported previously, this work shows a much higher energy density. This may be attributed to the largely increasing dielectric constant at the interface between the nanoparticles and their surrounding substrate, especially for the nanocomposite with a low volume content. The calculated dielectric constant from the theoretical model considering interface parameters fits well with the experimental data, indicating that the composites possess Kmax at ultralow nanoparticle contents. Therefore, the ultralow nanoparticle-added nanocomposites show great promise for ultrahigh-energy-density capacitor applications.
