Green hydrogen production from biomass via gasification process is an emerging and widely concerned technology. However, tar as a byproduct of the gasification process can clog and corrode gasification equipment, thereby reducing gasification efficiency. While steam reforming technology can efficiently convert tar into H 2 , the catalyst deactivation remains a significant challenge. This research synthesized novel NiAl catalysts by one-pot evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) method for converting tar into H 2 . The results revealed that the 2.4-NiAl-7 catalyst was the most active, achieving a toluene conversion rate of 99.9 %, a hydrogen yield of 181.2 mmol/g toluene at 750 °C, and demonstrating excellent resistance to carbon deposition and long-term stability with a steam/carbon(S/C) ratio of 3. A series of characterizations confirmed that moderate metal-support interaction was crucial because of the confinement effect (embedding Ni nanoparticles into the mesopore) and the unique NiAl spinel structure. Additionally, the SRT performance (gas yields) was found to be positively correlated with the degree of Ni dispersion. This research reveals new insights in designing a catalyst for long-term practical applications in the conversion of tar into H 2 during steam reforming.

Catalytic conversion of furfural and its derivatives to value-added C 5 molecules has attractive much attention in the field of biomass conversion . In this paper, the selective hydrogenolysis of tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol to 1,5-pentanediol has been studied over a series of PrO x promoted Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalysts. The catalytic performances and the promoting effects of PrO x , as well as the role of Ni and PrO x species have been discussed. The surface properties and structure of catalysts were examined by TEM, XRD, XPS, H 2 -TPR, H 2 -TPD, in-situ DRIFTS, etc. The presence of PrO x species promotes the reaction rate and changes product selectivity significantly, and a 79.2% 1,5-pentanediol selectivity can be obtained at 88.4% conversion over the NiPr 1.2 /Al 2 O 3 catalyst. The synergistic effect between defect-rich PrO x and the adjacent active Ni species has been confirmed to contribute to the superior catalytic performances. These results provide useful knowledge for the activation of cyclic ether bonds and the design of heterogeneous catalysts with lanthanide oxide supports.

A series of Cu-modified Ni–Al2O3 catalysts with various Cu/Ni ratios (xCu/Ni–Al2O3) were prepared, and systematically characterized using BET, XRD, SEM, H2-TPR, H2-TPD, TG, and XPS. The catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic performance in the selective hydrogenation of N,N-dimethylaniline to N,N-dimethylcyclohexylamine in a continuous fixed-bed reactor. When the Cu/Ni molar ratio was 0.1, the active components were highly dispersed on the Al2O3 support, which possessed a high specific surface area and well-developed porous structure. Furthermore, the catalyst demonstrated strong hydrogen desorption capacity and enhanced thermal stability. Synergistic electronic interactions between Ni and Cu improved the adsorption and activation of both reactant and H2 molecules. The incorporation of Cu near the Ni active sites effectively modulated the selectivity toward the desired product N,N-dimethylcyclohexylamine. Under the optimal reaction conditions: H2 pressure of 5 MPa, reaction temperature of 130 °C, liquid hourly space velocity 0.1 h−1 and hydrogen-amine volume ratio of 5500 : 1, the 0.1Cu/Ni–Al2O3 catalyst achieved superior performance, with a N,N-dimethylaniline conversion rate of 99.5% and a selectivity for N,N-dimethylcyclohexylamine of 97.6%.

The semi‑hydrogenation of alkynes to alkenes remains a challenging topic in the purification of polymer monomers. Achieving selective hydrogenation of alkynes requires careful control of alkene adsorption strength on the catalyst surface while avoiding the production of over‑hydrogenated compounds. The reaction is fundamentally influenced by the electronic structure of the metal active sites on the catalyst surface. In this study, Al 2 O 3 -supported Al Ni intermetallic nanoparticles catalysts are synthesized through in situ reduction-doping methods using LiAlH 4 as Al sources. The coordination environment and electronic structure of the active metal Ni are finely tuned while the Al Ni stoichiometric ratio is adjusted. The turnover frequency of AlNi 3 /Al 2 O 3 (16.7 h -1` ) and AlNi/Al 2 O 3 (9.1 h −1 ) are higher than that of the Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalyst (8.6 h −1 ). The optimal AlNi/Al 2 O 3 catalyst with AlNi intermetallic structure exhibits the high styrene selectivity (>90 %) when the phenylacetylene conversion exceeds 99 %. The metal bond between Al and Ni atoms strengthens electronic coupling, resulting in the hybridization of Al p orbital and s orbital with Ni d orbital. The resulting isolated and electron-rich Ni sites (Ni δ- ) are key to achieving high selectivity for styrene. These sites govern the π-adsorption of styrene molecules. Furthermore, the kinetic selectivity advantage of this unique Ni ensemble (AlNi, an intermetallic compound) has been verified. A lower reaction rate and higher activation energy (Ea = 132 kJ·mol −1 ) for hydrogenation of styrene over AlNi/Al 2 O 3 catalyst are observed. Moreover, the high stability of this catalyst and its broad applicability in the hydrogenation of various alkyne compounds provide valuable insights for selective hydrogenation applications of Al-based intermetallic catalysts, enabling the exploration of their properties and applications.

The effects of catalyst supports (γ-Al 2 O 3 and α-Al 2 O 3 ) on hydrogen yield and carbon nanotubes formation were studied during steam reforming of toluene over Ni-based catalysts. Hydrogen yield and CNTs quality over Ni/γ-Al 2 O 3 were better than those over Ni/α-Al 2 O 3 at S/C ratio of 1 due to the high Ni dispersion of Ni/γ-Al 2 O 3 . With the increasing of steam addition, CNTs production remarkably increased over Ni/α-Al 2 O 3 , while it decreased over Ni/γ-Al 2 O 3 . The CNTs on Ni/γ-Al 2 O 3 were corroded at S/C ratio of 3 by excess steam. Toluene conversion and hydrogen yield over Ni/α-Al 2 O 3 were significantly larger than those over Ni/γ-Al 2 O 3 , which was attributed to the different effects of CNTs on catalytic activity . The strong interaction between Ni particle and γ-Al 2 O 3 led to the base-growth mechanism of CNTs on Ni/γ-Al 2 O 3 in which Ni particles located at the bottom of CNTs, thus the growth of CNTs covered Ni active sites and decreased catalytic activity of Ni/γ-Al 2 O 3 . By contrast, owing to weak interaction, CNTs grown on Ni/α-Al 2 O 3 followed tip-growth mechanism that would increase Ni dispersion and promote reforming reaction .

Polymer dielectrics play an indispensable role in electrostatic energy storage due to their merits of high voltage resistance, lightweight, excellent flexibility, and easy processability. However, the deterioration in dielectric reliability and energy loss at high temperatures limit their versatility for broader applications. Herein, Ni@Al2O3 NFs are fabricated by encapsulating different content of nickel (Ni) nanoparticles into alumina nanofibers (Al2O3 NFs) via the electrospinning technique and employed to simultaneously improve the dielectric constant and breakdown strength of poly(ether imide) (PEI). This is realized by the coupling action of the increased interfacial polarization, Coulomb blockade effect of Ni nanoparticles, and wide bandgap of Al2O3 NFs. Notably, the PEI nanocomposite films containing 0.50 vol % Ni@Al2O3 NFs exhibit an excellent discharge energy density (Ud) of 5.8 J/cm3 at 150 °C, 262% higher than that of pristine PEI (Ud = 1.6 J/cm3), accompanied by a high efficiency of 81.3%. This work provides a promising strategy to improve the high-temperature energy storage performance of polymer-based dielectrics by exerting the synergistic effect of fillers at ultralow content.

Al 2 O 3 -supported Ni-Mo as a low-cost and efficient bimetallic catalyst has been applied in the hydrodeoxygenation of plant oils or fats for production of high-quality hydrocarbon fuels, but it is still challenge to avoid the serious cleavage of C-C bonds caused by isolated single-metal Ni sites. Herein, we report a novel Al 2 O 3 -supported Mo-Ni catalyst (Mo-Ni@Al 2 O 3 ) with Ni and Mo sites in close proximity to enhance the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) selectivity of fatty acid esters. Compared with the conventional Mo-Ni/γ-Al 2 O 3 catalyst showing high hydrogenolysis activity for C−C bonds, the Mo-Ni@Al 2 O 3 catalyst exhibited higher HDO selectivity towards the diesel-range alkanes. Detailed characterizations reveal that during the synthesis of Mo-Ni@Al 2 O 3 catalyst, the loaded Ni species were present in two forms after reduction in a H 2 flow, one is the closely contact of Ni and Mo bimetallic sites and the other is NiAl 2 O 4 , which enhances the synergistic promoting effect between Ni and Mo sites and inhibits the presence of isolated metallic Ni active sites, thereby exhibiting the enhanced remarkably HDO selectivity towards target products.

Dry reforming of methane (DRM) is a promising route for the simultaneous conversion of CO2 and CH4; despite the effectiveness of C–H bond activation ability of Ni-based catalysts, they face serious challenges due to coking. Herein, two metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), NH2-MIL-53 and MIL-53 were loaded with Ni via impregnation and calcined at different temperatures to prepare Ni/Al2O3 catalysts. The results reveal that the Ni-based catalyst derived from NH2-MIL-53 possesses a higher specific surface area (SSA) due to the presence of –NH2 groups, which remarkably improved the dispersion of Ni. Additionally, the calcination temperatures are found to play an important role. Low-temperature calcination leads to weaker metal–support interaction (MSI) while high-temperature calcination results in lower specific surface area (SSA) and agglomeration of the active component Ni. The Ni/Al2O3 catalyst calcined at 850 °C exhibits moderate MSI and high SSA, leading to excellent catalytic activity (CH4 conversion ∼68%, CO2 conversion ∼80%) and stability (>50 h with coking ≈0.022 mmol C·gcat–1·h–1) at 750 °C with a GHSV of 96,000 mL/(gcat·h). The derived porous alumina restricts Ni sintering. In situ DRIFT results show that such a catalyst benefits the formation of key intermediate b-HCOO* due to high Ni dispersion. This work provides new insights and directions for optimizing the performance of MOF-derived catalysts.

The conversion of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 1-hydroxy-2,5-hexanedione (HHD) represented a typical route for high-value utilization of biomass. However, this reaction was often catalyzed by the noble metal catalyst. In this manuscript, W promoted Ni/Al2O3 was prepared as a noble-metal-free catalyst for this transformation. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, XPS, NH3-TPD, TEM, and EDS-mapping to study the influence of the introduction of W. There was an interaction between Ni and W, and strong acid sites were introduced by the addition of W. The W promoted Ni/Al2O3 showed good selectivity to HHD when used as a catalyst for the hydrogenation of HMF in water. The influences of the content of W, temperature, H2 pressure, reaction time, and acetic acid (AcOH) were studied. NiWOx/Al2O3-0.5 (mole ratio of W:Ni = 0.5) was found to be the most suitable catalyst. The high selectivity to HHD was ascribed to the acid sites introduced by W. This was proved by the fact that the selectivity to HHD was increased a lot when AcOH was added just using Ni/Al2O3 as catalysts. 59% yield of HHD was achieved on NiWOx/Al2O3-0.5 at 393 K, 4 MPa H2 reacting for 6 h, which was comparable to the noble metal catalyst, showing the potential application in the production of HHD from HMF.

A series of NiP-x/Al2O3catalysts containing different ratio of metallic nickel to nickel phosphides, prepared by varying Ni/P molar ratio of 4, 3, 2 through a co-impregnation method, were employed to investigate the synergistic effect of metallic nickel-nickel phosphides in dry methane reforming reaction. The Ni/Al2O3catalyst indicates good activity along with severe carbon deposition. The presence of phosphorus increases nickel dispersion as well as the interaction between nickel and alumina support, which results in smaller nickel particles. The co-existence of metallic nickel and nickel phosphides species is confirmed at all the P contained catalysts. Due to the relative stronger CO2dissociation ability, the NiP-x/Al2O3catalysts indicate obvious higher resistance of carbon deposition. Furthermore, because of good balance between CH4dissociation and CO2dissociation, NiP-2/Al2O3catalyst exhibits best resistance of carbon deposition, few carbon depositions were formed after 50 h of dry methane reforming. Keywords:dry methane reforming;nickel catalysts;phosphides;coke-resistance;synergistic effect

MgO–Al 2 O 3 -supported metallic Ni and bimetallic Ni–Zn catalysts (referred as Ni/MgAl and Ni x Zn/MgAl with the Ni/Zn atomic ratio of x , respectively) were prepared by the coprecipitation method, and their performance for methane dry reforming (DRM) was tested on an atmospheric quartz fixed-bed. The XRD, magnetic measurement, H 2 -TPR, TEM/EDS and XPS results demonstrate that metallic Ni and Ni–Zn alloy form in Ni/MgAl and Ni x Zn/MgAl, respectively. With reducing the Ni/Zn atomic ratio, the amount of surface Ni sites decreases, while the CO 2 adsorption capacity and strength increase due to the presence of Zn. Ni x Zn/MgAl gives higher activity than Ni/MgAl for DRM, mainly due to the suppression of carbon deposition and graphitization on Ni–Zn alloy and the enhanced adsorption of CO 2 . Under the condition of 800 °C, CH 4 /CO 2 molar ratio of 1 and weight hourly space velocity of 20,000 mL g cat −1 h −1 , Ni/MgAl gives the CH 4 and CO 2 conversions of 76% and 80%, respectively. With decreasing Ni/Zn atomic ratio from 7 to 2, the CH 4 and CO 2 conversions on Ni x Zn/MgAl first increase and then decrease, and Ni 5 Zn/MgAl has the highest activity with the CH 4 and CO 2 conversions of 81% and 87%, respectively. During the time on stream of 100 h at 800 °C, Ni 5 Zn/MgAl exhibits better stability than Ni/MgAl, mainly ascribed to its less amount of filamentous graphite carbon. In all, the formation of Ni–Zn alloy enhances the catalyst activity and remarkably suppresses the graphitization of carbonaceous deposit.

Bio-oil can be converted to chemicals, carbon material, or syngas by various thermochemical processes which are always preceded with the pyrolysis step. In bio-oil pyrolysis, coke formation is almost inevitable, causing difficulties for further processing. In this study, bio-oil was mixed with Ni/Al 2 O 3 before it was fed for pyrolysis. Interesting results were observed whereby the effect of Ni/Al 2 O 3 mixing on coke formation shifted from promoting to inhibiting with increasing pyrolysis temperature. When the temperature was higher than 700 °C, contrary to the cases without mixing, the apparent decreases in coke yield were observed (e.g., the coke yield decreased by 10% at 800 °C). Comparative studies on bio-oil and its lignin-derived oligomer fraction indicated that the catalytic cracking of small molecules could enhance the formation of hydrogen radicals, which promoted thermal decomposition of lignin-derived oligomers, thus inhibiting coke formation via polymerization.
