Graphical Cellulose conversion into ethanol : Ethanol is obtained through one-pot cellulose hydrogenolysis over graphene-layers-encapsulated nickel catalysts with the aid of H 3 PO 4 in water. This work, for the first time, demonstrates a chemocatalytic approach for a high-yield production of ethanol from biomass using a non-noble metal catalyst. Ethanol is an important bulk chemical with diverse applications. Biomass-derived ethanol is traditionally produced by fermentation. Direct cellulose conversion to ethanol by chemocatalysis is particularly promising but remains a great challenge. Herein, a one-pot hydrogenolysis of cellulose into ethanol was developed by using graphene-layers-encapsulated nickel (Ni@C) catalysts with the aid of H 3 PO 4 in water. The cellulose was hydrolyzed into glucose, which was activated by forming cyclic di-ester bonds between the OH groups of H 3 PO 4 and glucose, promoting ethanol formation under the synergistic hydrogenation of Ni@C. A 69.1 % yield of ethanol (carbon mole basis) was obtained, which is comparable to the theoretical value achieved by glucose fermentation. An ethanol concentration of up to 8.9 wt % was obtained at an increased cellulose concentration. This work demonstrates a chemocatalytic approach for the high-yield production of ethanol from renewable cellulosic biomass at high concentration.

How to break the activity-selectivity dependence in halonitrobenzene hydrogenation remains a challenge. In this work, Ni@C N/SiO 2 were synthesized and examined in the hydrogenation of p -chloronitrobenzene. It showed that the electron transferred from nitrogen doped carbon shell to Ni 0 core (core–shell synergistic effect) dominated the intrinsic activities of Ni@C N/SiO 2 with dual-reaction surfaces (H 2 dissociated on Ni 0 core, while p -chloronitrobenzene was hydrogenated on carbon shell) in the thiophene-free hydrogenation, leading to their higher turnover frequencies than Raney Ni catalyst. During the thiophene-involved hydrogenation, the adsorption of thiophene on Ni 0 changed its electron density and blocked the active sites. These enhanced the selectivity, but significantly reduced the activity for Raney Ni catalyst. Comparatively, the carbon shell protected Ni 0 core from thiophene adsorption so that the hydrogen dissociated on Ni 0 as usual. However, the adsorption of thiophene on the carbon shell reduced the available sites for p -chloronitrobenzene adsorption. Although Ni@C N/SiO 2 had lower activities in the thiophene-involved reactions than those of thiophene-free reactions, they achieved ∼100 % p-chloroaniline selectivities and 8-fold higher turnover frequencies than Raney Ni, breaking the activity-selectivity dependence. This reveals that the available sites on the carbon shell and the core–shell synergistic effect determine the thiophene-involved hydrogenation activities of Ni@C N/SiO 2 catalysts.

N-Doped carbon-incorporated Ni2P/Ni was reasonably designed and synthesized from nickel-based metal organic framework (Ni-MOF) precursors via a novel simultaneous carbonization and phosphatization process. Interestingly, subtle phosphating significantly improves the energy storage performance of supercapacitors (SCs). Ni2P/Ni/C composites exhibit a good energy storage performance with a specific capacitance of 257.2 C g−1 at 1 A g−1. The corresponding hybrid supercapacitor achieves an energy density of 25.4 W h kg−1 at a power density of 750 W kg−1, ultrahigh electrochemical cyclic stability (98.2% retention after 4000 cycles) and nearly 100% coulombic efficiency with a Ni2P/Ni/C-100 positive electrode and a porous carbon negative electrode, respectively. These can be attributed to the synergetic effects of N-doped carbon and metal phosphates, which ensure good electrical conductivity and provide rich reactive sites as well as stable architecture. These results indicate that the controlled pyrolysis of MOFs is an effective method to design a kind of high-performance electrode material for hybrid supercapacitors.

Ni and carbon materials exhibit remarkable catalysis for the hydriding reaction of Mg. But the underlying mechanism of Ni/C hybrid catalysis is still unclear. In this work, density functional theory (DFT) calculation is applied to investigate the effect of Ni/C co-incorporation on the hydriding reaction of Mg crystal. The morphology and crystal structure of the Ni/C co-incorporated Mg sample show that the co-incorporated structure is credible. The transition state searching calculation suggests that both the incorporations of Ni and C are beneficial for the H 2 dissociation. But Ni atom has a dramatic improvement for H 2 dissociation and makes the H diffusion become limiting step of the hyriding reaction. The Ni d z 2 orbit and H s orbit accept the electrons and combine together compactly, while the Ni d xy orbit is half-occupied. The catalytic effect of Ni on H 2 dissociation can be ascribed to the bridging effect of Ni d xy orbit. The incorporation of C can weaken the over-strong interaction between Ni and H which hindered the H diffusion on Mg(0001). The Ni/C co-incorporated Mg(0001) shows the best performance during hyriding reaction compared with the clean and single incorporated Mg(0001).

Magnetic-dielectric synergy is critical to the electromagnetic wave absorption (EWA) performance of carbon/metal absorbers and is closely related to their nanoscale structure. In this work, aromatic dianhydrides with different conjugation lengths (PMDA, NTDA, and PTCDA) were used for ligand engineering of phthalocyanine-derived Ni/C nanocomposites, yielding Ni/C-PMDA, Ni/C-NTDA, and Ni/C-PTCDA. The resulting nanostructural variation regulated carbon ordering, Ni dispersion, and interfacial coupling at the Ni/C heterointerface, thereby redistributing dielectric and magnetic loss behavior. As a result, Ni/C-PMDA shows deep absorption with a reflection loss of −53.30 dB at 2.99 mm, while Ni/C-NTDA achieves a wide effective absorption bandwidth of 6.00 GHz at a thin thickness of 1.92 mm. Moreover, far-field radar cross section simulations on a Ni/C nanocomposite-coated perfect electric conductor (PEC) plate show reduced scattering compared with bare PEC. This work offers a ligand engineering strategy for designing Ni/C nanocomposites with optimized magnetic–dielectric synergy for electromagnetic wave absorption.

The direct upgrading of biomass-derived aqueous ethanol to produce long-chain alcohols is important due to the growing demand for value-added sustainable fine chemicals and liquid fuel. In this work, a bimetallic Ni@C catalyst was synthesized by using a facile sol–gel method with bismuth (Bi) doping. The bimetallic NiBi-1/1@C catalyst exhibited distinct advantages in forming C6+ high-carbon alcohols and inhibiting C1 byproducts compared with the monometallic Ni@C. Optimally, an ethanol conversion up to 87.2% with a C6+ alcohol selectivity of 79.9% was demonstrated and the C1 byproduct selectivity was suppressed to 10.1%. The doping of Bi modulates the adsorption of aldehydes on the Ni site, which inhibits the C–C cleavage side reaction, thus realizing the direct and efficient conversion of an ethanol solution to C6+ alcohols. These findings provide a promising strategy for directly converting biomass-derived ethanol to sustainable high-carbon alcohols and biofuel precursors.

The development of biodegradable materials from biomass is a crucial strategy for leveraging biomass resources. A key component in this process is 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)furan (BHMF), a significant biomass-derived platform chemical. However, producing BHMF with high selectivity through the selective hydrogenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, while avoiding the creation of unwanted byproducts, is a complex challenge. In our research, we have developed a novel catalyst featuring a magnetic core. This catalyst, which consists of platinum loaded onto a graphene-like shell, has been applied to the catalytic hydrogenation of HMF in an aqueous environment. Under the optimized conditions of 373 K, 3 MPa H 2 , and 1 h reaction time, a BHMF yield exceeding 99% was achieved. This method presents a promising and effective approach for the high-value conversion of biomass waste into polymer materials and pharmaceutical chemicals. Graphical Abstract

This study proposed a self-powered bio-sensing positioning system driven by MOF-derived porous Ni/C material-based hybrid nanogenerator. The porous structure of Ni/C nanoparticles provides a high specific surface area, increases the capacitance of the nano-composite, and traps more charges due to the formation of micro-capacitors, which boost the performance of TENGs. The as-fabricated enhanced TENG achieved a peak voltage of 820 V and a power density of 10.1 W/m 2 . An optimal bilayer structure was determined through experiments and simulations to obtain the maximum output performance. Flexible TENGs are placed on various parts of the body to achieve biomechanical energy harvesting and motion monitoring, and provide power sources for small electronics. By combining with electromagnetic generator (EMG), a wearable self-powered positioning system is constructed. This work provides a new idea to enhance the output of TENG, and broadens the application of TENG in self-powered wearable systems.

In this work, Ni-Zn-doped porous carbon materials (Ni@C) with regular dodecahedral morphologies were synthesized by calcination of Ni-doped ZIF-8 as a template, and applied in electrochemical sensing and quantitative electrochemical sensors to detect Hydroquinone (HQ), The uniformly dispersed Ni in Ni@C serves as the catalytically active material, and the synergistic effect of elemental Zn and porous carbon improves the electron transport efficiency of the material. The developed Ni@C electrochemical sensor detected HQ alone with a sensitivity of 180 μA μM -1 cm -2 and a linear range of 9.1 nM-80 μM. The results demonstrate that the enzyme-free electrochemical sensor based on Ni@C/GCE exhibits good sensitivity, a wide linear range and excellent selectivity. At the same time, the problem of the general conductivity of metal-organic framework (MOF) materials is solved, which provides a new idea for the application of such new materials in the direction of electrochemistry.

In this study, a Ni–C co-dispersed catalyst (denoted as Ni&C) with a uniform spherical morphology (≈2 μm diameter) and Core-shell structure was synthesized using Ni-based metal-organic framework (MOFs) as precursors. The Core-shell Ni&C catalyst significantly improved the dehydrogenation kinetics of MgH 2 . The MgH 2 –Ni&C composite exhibited a remarkably low onset dehydrogenation temperature of 192.6 °C, which is 136.9 °C lower than that of pure MgH 2 . The peak dehydrogenation temperature and dehydrogenation temperature span were reduced by 120 °C and 31.3 °C, respectively. At 300 °C, the composite released 5.82 wt% H 2 within 2.1 min. The apparent activation energy for dehydrogenation decreased to 76.78 kJ mol −1 , far below that of pure MgH 2 (138.18 kJ mol −1 ). Mechanistic analysis revealed that Mg 2 NiH 4 /Mg 2 Ni phases formed in-situ during hydrogen cycling acted as "hydrogen pumps" and nucleation promoters of matrix, while the carbon provided good spatial confinement and enhanced thermal conductivity . Moderate coupling between Ni and C generated synergistic effects , collectively optimizing the dehydrogenation performance.

For next-generation microwave absorption materials (MAMs), the key performance benchmarks include: (i) minimized thickness matching parameters, (ii) maximized effective absorption bandwidth, and (iii) optimized reflection loss profiles. One-dimensional (1D) magnetic Ni@C porous nanorods have been successfully fabricated through the calcination of ZnNi-MOF precursors under an argon atmosphere. The Ni@C porous nanorods exhibit exceptional electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption performance, achieving a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −64.4 dB at 1.89 mm thickness and an impressive effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 5.7 GHz at 2.50 mm thickness at a low filler loading of only 10 wt%. Furthermore, radar cross-section (RCS) simulations indicate the Ni@C porous nanorods achieve a substantial 33.07 dB·m² CST reduction compared to the pure perfect electric conductor (PEC) plate. The outstanding EMW absorption performance originates from the unique structural design of the porous Ni@C nanorods, which simultaneously optimizes impedance matching and incorporates multiple loss mechanisms including conductive loss, dipolar polarization, magnetic resonance, and interfacial polarization effects. This robust synthetic approach presents a versatile platform for developing various 1D magnetic carbon-based composites with superior electromagnetic wave attenuation properties.

In the catalytic transformation of bio-oil into liquid fuels having alkanes via hydrodeoxygenation (HDO), the acid and metal sites in the catalyst are pivotal for promoting the HDO of lignin-derived phenolic compounds. This study introduces a novel bifunctional catalyst comprising phosphomolybdenum-vanadium heteropolyacids (H4PMo11VO40) coupled with Ni/C. The HDO reaction of the model compound guaiacol was carried out under reaction conditions of 230 °C, revealing the superior performance of H4PMo11VO40 with Ni/C catalysts compared to the conventional acids, even at low dosage. The Keggin structure of H4PMo11VO40 provided a solid catalyst with strong acidic and redox properties, alongside advantages such as ease of synthesis, cost-effectiveness, and tunable acid and redox properties at the molecular level. Characterization of Ni/C and the prepared acid demonstrated favorable pore structure with a mesopore volume of 0.281 cm3/g and an average pore size of 3.404 nm, facilitating uniform distribution and catalytic activity of Ni-metal. Incorporating acid enhances the acidic sites, fostering synergistic interactions between metal and acidic sites within the catalyst, thereby significantly enhancing HDO performance. Guaiacol conversion at 230 °C reached 100%, with a cyclohexane selectivity of 89.3%. This study presents a promising pathway for converting lignin-derived phenolic compounds.
