Oxygen vacancy engineering in hollow confined Ni/CeO2 nanofibers for steering intermediates in CO2 methanation

Longmei Li,Feiyang Hu,Xiuxing Cai,Tingrui Zeng,Qing Liu,Runping Ye,Lei Gong,Rongbin Zhang,Gang Feng

Uniformly dispersed and confined hm-Ni/CeO 2 catalysts were synthesized for CO 2 hydrogenation. • The hm-Ni/CeO 2 outperforms its mesoporous counterpart, reaching 84.56% CO 2 conversion at 325 °C with good stability. • The hm-Ni/CeO 2 possesses abundant oxygen vacancies and a higher Ni distribution. • In-situ DRIFTS and DFT studies confirmed that the enhanced methanation performance originates from oxygen vacancies promoting the formate pathway. Confined structure catalysts are widely dedicated to boosting catalytic activity and stability , while controlling their micro-environment and intermediate species remains a challenge. Herein, mesoporous (m-Ni/CeO 2 ) and hollow mesoporous (hm-Ni/CeO 2 ) catalysts were prepared via electrospinning and evaluated for CO 2 hydrogenation to methane. The hm-Ni/CeO 2 catalyst exhibits superior performance, achieving 84.56% CO 2 conversion at 325 °C, along with enhanced low-temperature activity compared to the m-Ni/CeO 2 catalyst. Characterizations revealed that the hm-Ni/CeO 2 catalyst possesses a higher oxygen vacancies and improved Ni dispersion, thereby enhancing metal-support interaction. Furthermore, synchrotron radiation and in-situ DRIFTS confirmed that the hm-Ni/CeO 2 catalyst facilitates the formation of bridging bidentate formate intermediates, which are more favorable for CH 4 production. Finally, DFT verified the predominance of the formate pathway and revealed that oxygen vacancies substantially enhance the reactivity of CO 2 methanation. This work not only develops a novel synthetic strategy for confined porous catalysts but also provides fundamental insights into the role of oxygen vacancies in CO 2 hydrogenation. Particle size tuning of Ni/CeO2 catalysts and their performance in methane dry reforming reaction

Yuxuan Niu,Xianrong Zheng,Baihe Guo,Haiyu Liu,Yan Jin,Juntian Niu

Nickel-based catalysts are prone to sintering and carbon deposition during methane dry reforming (DRM), which limits their industrial application. This study addresses these challenges by designing Ni/CeO 2 catalysts with controlled Ni nanoparticle sizes. By varying calcination temperatures, selecting different calcination atmospheres, and comparing preparation methods (equal-volume impregnation vs. combustion method), a series of Ni-based catalysts with different particle sizes were synthesized. The physicochemical properties of the catalysts were elucidated through various characterization techniques. ICP-OES confirmed that the actual Ni loading closely matched the nominal value. XRD and TEM analyses verified that the combustion method yielded smaller NiO nanoparticles with higher dispersion compared to the impregnation method. This advantage stems from the rapid, self-sustaining redox reaction in the combustion process, which effectively inhibits NiO nuclei migration and agglomeration. Consequently, catalysts prepared by the combustion method exhibited superior catalytic activity and stability in DRM. The enhanced performance is directly linked to the smaller Ni particle size, which provides a greater number of active sites and promotes stronger metal-support interactions, thereby improving resistance to sintering and carbon deposition. Furthermore, kinetic studies showed that the smaller Ni nanoparticles were more active, possessing a lower apparent activation energy for methane reforming than the larger particles. These findings provide a clear strategy for the rational design of coke- and sintering-resistant Ni/CeO 2 catalysts for carbon-based energy conversion.

A Ni/CeO2–CDC-SiC Catalyst with Improved Coke Resistance in CO2 Reforming of Methane

Yu Guo,Junma Zou,Xiao Shi,Patrick Rukundo,Zhou-jun Wang

A nanocomposite Ni/CeO2–CDC-SiC catalyst which consists of highly dispersed Ni nanoparticles contacting intimately with CeO2 nanoparticles on a nanoporous carbide-derived carbon (CDC) layer over SiC support has been successfully designed for carbon dioxide (CO2) reforming of methane. In comparison with the Ni/CDC-SiC catalyst, the ceria-promoted Ni/CDC-SiC catalyst possessed enhanced activity and improved stability. The catalysts were systematically characterized with N2 sorption, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry elemental mapping, thermogravimetric/differential thermal analysis, temperature-programmed reduction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements. It was found that, after introducing CeO2 promoter, the specific surface area was increased, and a smaller Ni particle size was obtained. The smaller Ni particle size led to an enhanced reforming activity. The presence of abundant Ni–CeO2 interfaces on the CeO2-promoted catalyst accelerated the carbon removal through the lattice oxygen species, which resulted in superior carbon resistance and thus an improved stability. The outcome of the present work is expected to shed meaningful insight into the design of nanocomposite catalysts with the aid of metal–oxide interfaces.

Oxygen Vacancies-Mediated CO2 Methanation Over Ni/CeO2–ZrO2 Solid Solutions Assembled on Clay Minerals

Shumei Chen,Chao Miao,Lixing Liang,Jing Ouyang

This paper reports the synthesis and CO2 methanation performance of Ni/CeO2–ZrO2 (CZ) solid solutions assembled on different clay minerals (rectorite, attapulgite, halloysite, and kaolin). The catalytic performance of the samples was examined in temperature range 200−400 °C at normal pressures. The attapulgite (ATP) assembled Ni nps-incorporated-CZ solid solution (Ni–CZA) has the highest CO2 conversion and excellent stability. The CO2 conversion of the Ni–CZA catalyst reached up to 81.2% at 400 °C, and CH4 selectivity was nearly 100%. The catalyst assembled on ATP has excellent adsorption performance and a large specific surface area, resulting in higher Ce3+ and adsorbed oxygen content, thanks to the high content of oxygen vacancies and faster oxygen transfer speed. Mechanistic analysis shows that the H2 dissociates at the Ni site, the CO2 was decomposed into CO and O, and the ATP and CZ provide hydroxyls and oxygen vacancies, respectively, in this composite catalyst.

Tailoring metal-support interaction by engineering Ni/CeO2 interfacial contact for boosting low-temperature CO2 methanation

Xiaoyan Han,Huiling Weng,Yani Shen,Jianjun Chen,Yu Xie,Qiulin Zhang,Ping Ning,Jiming Hao

CO 2 methanation is an important route for carbon emission mitigation and renewable energy storage. However, insufficient CO 2 activation and inefficient hydrogenation of surface intermediates at low temperatures remain major challenges. In this work, Ni/CeO 2 catalysts with distinct metal-support interaction degrees were constructed by regulating the interfacial contact of Ni-Ce, aiming to enhance the low-temperature methanation performance. The results suggest that Ni/CeO 2 with strengthened Ni-CeO 2 interfacial interaction exhibits more oxygen-vacancy-related defect sites, improved reducibility, and favorable Ni dispersion. These interrelated features collectively facilitate CO 2 adsorption/activation and intermediate conversion, thereby contributing to the enhanced low-temperature methanation performance. Specifically, the CO 2 conversion reached ∼80% at 250 °C. In situ Raman spectroscopy suggested the dynamic evolution of oxygen-vacancy-related defect sites during the reaction, while in situ DRIFTS suggested that CO 2 methanation may proceed through both the formate-mediated pathway and the CO* pathway. These findings suggest that tailoring the Ni-Ce interfacial interaction, together with the associated changes in oxygen vacancy related defects, reducibility, and Ni dispersion, may provide an effective approach to improving the low-temperature CO 2 methanation performance of Ni-based catalysts.

In-modified Ni/CeO2 for reverse water-gas shift: Cooperation between oxygen vacancies and intermetallic compounds

Qiangqiang Wu,Hongquan Fu,Chengxiong Dang,Guangxing Yang,Yonghai Cao,Hongjuan Wang,Hao-Fan Wang,Hao Yu

The reverse water–gas shift (RWGS) reaction has been identified as one of the most techno-economically viable strategies for handling with antropogenic CO 2 emissions, but high-efficiency RWGS catalysts are still challenging. Herein, a series of In-modified Ni-based catalysts with variations of the support and the Ni/In ratio were prepared by a simple wet impregnation method. The high activity for RWGS reaction is achieved on the CeO 2 -supported catalysts. The incorporation of In into Ni/CeO 2 catalysts significantly increases CO selectivity. The optimal 10Ni-5In-CeO 2 catalyst shows 97.2 % CO selectivity at CO 2 conversion rate of 52.8 mmol g Ni −1 h −1 for 100 h without obvious deactivation at 350 °C. The oxygen vacancies on CeO 2 and the active *H species on Ni-In intermetallic compounds (IMCs) are responsible for the enhancement of RWGS reaction. This work provides a guidance to high-efficiency catalysts for CO 2 hydrogenation by cooperation between active metal and oxide support.

Tuning the metal-support interaction via size-controlled ceria nanocubes in CO2 methanation over Ni/CeO2

Ziwen Hao,Yabin Li,Yutong Pan,Xiaoyu Han,Qiang Wang,Maoshuai Li,Yue Wang,Xinbin Ma

Interaction between metal species and support affects the structural and electronic properties of metal species, thus changing the catalytic behaviour. This work demonstrates regulation of support size is an effective way to optimise the metal-support interaction over Ni/CeO 2 -cube. Smaller ceria cubes promoted formation of smaller Ni particle sizes with higher dispersion, generating stronger interaction between Ni and CeO 2 , and consequently higher turnover frequency for CO 2 methanation. The interaction in Ni/CeO 2 with the smallest ceria size (average ca. 5 nm) provides stronger CO 2 and H 2 adsorption capacity, facilitating the CO 2 methanation with over 99 % CH 4 selectivity at 548–573 K, delivering a CO 2 conversion rate of 327.9 mol CO2 mol Ni -1 h −1 , which is 1.9 and 14.0 times than that of the 12 nm and 20 nm counterparts at 573 K, respectively. In-situ FTIR spectroscopic analysis demonstrates the surface reaction proceeds via a formate pathway, and smaller CeO 2 -cube supported Ni facilitates conversion of carbonate/bicarbonate intermediates to formate species. The metal-support interaction aroused from controlled support size provides a new way to design high-performance methanation catalyst.

Catalytic decomposition of undiluted methane into hydrogen and carbon nanotubes over Pt promoted Ni/CeO2 catalysts

Manoj Pudukudy,Zahira Yaakob,Qingming Jia,Mohd Sobri Takriff

The catalytic decomposition of methane is a strategic process to produce COx-free hydrogen and carbon nanomaterials. In this work, for the first time, highly porous ceria was prepared by a urea-assisted solid state combustion method and used as a support for the preparation of a set of platinum-promoted nickel catalysts. The amount of Pt varied from 0.05% to 0.2% while retaining 20% nickel in the catalysts. The prepared catalysts were completely characterized for their structural, textural and redox properties, and their catalytic performance was tested for undiluted methane decomposition. A fine surface dispersion of nickel oxide over ceria was observed in the prepared catalysts. No peaks related to Pt were observed in the catalysts, indicating its good surface dispersion. An enhancement was observed in the properties of the Ni/CeO2 catalyst after the addition of Pt as a promoter. The crystallinity of NiO was not altered by the addition of Pt, whereas the specific surface area of the catalysts was increased with the incremental addition of Pt. Furthermore, the reduction temperature of nickel oxide was shifted to low temperature in the Pt-promoted catalysts due to the hydrogen spillover effect. The surface composition and chemical states of the Pt-promoted Ni/CeO2 catalysts were further studied using XPS. The Pt-promoted Ni/CeO2 catalysts exhibited high catalytic efficiency for methane decomposition due to their improved catalytic properties. The addition of Pt increased the hydrogen yield, and a significant increase in the hydrogen yield was observed for the incremental amount of Pt in the catalysts. Moreover, by increasing the reaction temperature from 650 °C to 750 °C, the hydrogen yield increased significantly. A maximum hydrogen yield of 65% was observed for the 0.2% Pt@Ni/CeO2 catalyst at 750 °C. The enhanced activity and stability of the catalysts were attributed to the synergistic effects of Ni and Pt due to their fine surface dispersion over ceria with a proper metal–support interaction. Multiwalled carbon nanotubes with different diameters were deposited over the catalysts. The carbon nanotubes deposited over the Ni/CeO2 catalyst were found to be more homogeneous than the Pt-promoted catalysts. Moreover, a wide hollow channel was observed in the carbon nanotubes deposited over the Pt-promoted catalyst.

Tailoring metal-support interactions via spatial confinement of Ni/CeO2 interfaces on h-BN for efficient CO2 methanation

Shuangxi Lin,Longchen Gong,Ning Zhao,Huibo Zhao,Feigang Zhao,Yang Bai,Zhenhua Li,Wen Liu

Modulating metal-support interactions is critical for improving catalytic activity and product selectivity for CO 2 hydrogenation. Such modulation can be achieved by modifying the metal nanoparticles as well as the supports. Here, we prepared a novel catalyst, in which Ni nanoparticles were dispersed on CeO 2 and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) hybrid supports. The introduction of h-BN to Ni/CeO 2 -BN effectively improves the dispersion of Ni nanoparticles. More importantly, the abundant Ni-CeO 2 interfacial sites with enriched oxygen vacancies are formed over h-BN edge sites. The dispersed Ni species are anchored on CeO 2 via a unique interfacial structure, with electron-rich Ni (Ni δ− ) species. At the interfacial sites on Ni/CeO 2 -BN, the synergy between oxygen vacancies and Ni δ− , which enhances CO 2 activation and H 2 dissociation, respectively, renders superior catalytic performance for CO 2 methanation. In situ DRIFTS suggests formate as key rate-limiting intermediates on Ni-CeO 2 sites, while the formation of B-H bonds further promotes hydrogen activation and subsequently the catalytic performance. The modulation of metal-support interactions by spatial confinement effect by BN offers a new paradigm for designing metal/oxide catalysts for chemical transformations that requires bifunctionality as CO 2 hydrogenation.

Synergistic optimization of microstructures and properties of electrodeposited Ni–CeO2 composite coatings with CeO2 microparticles and CeO2 nanoparticles

Shuxin You,Shilong Xing,Chuanhai Jiang

The synergistic mechanism of microparticles and nanoparticles on optimizing microstructures homogeneity and enhancing microhardness and corrosion resistance of mixed coatings was deeply researched by co-electrodepositing CeO 2 microparticles and CeO 2 nanoparticles into nickel matrix. Microparticles contribute to enhancing the microhardness of the coating, while nanoparticles promote the homogeneity of the microstructure, thereby improving the corrosion resistance of the coating. Therefore, by co-electrodepositing microparticles and nanoparticles into the nickel matrix, microparticles and nanoparticles in the nickel matrix generate a synergistic optimization effect, combining the advantages of microparticles and nanoparticles. Microparticles are mainly responsible for enhancing the microhardness of the coating, while nanoparticles are responsible for promoting the homogeneity of the microstructure in the coating, maintaining a homogeneous distribution of microhardness, and improving the corrosion resistance of the coating. Ultimately, the mixed coating achieves both high microhardness and excellent corrosion resistance, along with homogeneous microhardness distribution.

Effects of synthesis method of CaO-Ni/CeO2 dual-functional materials for integrated CO2 capture and CH4 dry reforming

Haiming Gu,Minyu Yu,Peng Xu,Shanhui Zhao,Siwen Zhang,Yadong Yu

Integrated CO 2 capture and dry reforming of CH 4 (ICC-DRM) is an effective approach to mitigate CO 2 emissions while producing syngas, with dual-functional material (DFM) as the core. CaO-Ni/CeO 2 DFM shows great potential for ICC-DRM application, but the impact of synthesis methods on its' structure and performance remains unclear. In this study, CaO-Ni/CeO 2 was prepared via solution combustion (SC), wet ball-milling (WM), and co-precipitation (CP), characterized by XRD, BET, SEM-EDS TEM, TGA and H 2 -TPR. The ICC-DRM performance was evaluated in a fixed-bed reactor. The SC sample exhibited the most favorable surface structure, with well-developed porosity and uniform elemental distribution, achieving the highest CO 2 capture capacity (152 wt% at 650 °C), achieving the highest CO 2 capture capacity (152 wt% at 650 °C) The WM sample showed intermediate properties, while the CP sample had a dense morphology and elemental aggregation leading to poor performance. Elevated temperature (675–700 °C) promoted WM/CP reactivity (still lower than SC at 650 °C), but caused severe performance degradation and increasing carbon deposition (21% for WM and 37% for CP after 10 cycles), while the SC sample maintained stability. Further optimization confirmed 5% Ni as the optimal loading for SC-DFM, achieving 95%–97% CH 4 conversion and a stable H 2 /CO ratio (∼1) at 650 °C. This study clarifies the regulatory effect of synthesis methods on DFM structure-reactivity relationship, identifying SC as the optimal strategy for high-performance ICC-DRM materials.

Uncovering the effect of surface basicity on the carbon deposition of Ni/CeO2 catalyst modified by oxides in DRM

Zhiliang Ou,Jingyu Ran,Huayu Qiu,Xin Huang,Changlei Qin

The acidity and basicity of Ni based catalysts play very important role in the catalytic performance during dry reforming of methane. Hence, the effects of surface basicity regulated by adding the oxides (CaO, MgO, ZnO and La 2 O 3 ) in Ni/CeO 2 catalysts on the catalytic behavior were systematically investigated, and the characterization methods and DFT calculations were performed to reveal the underlying mechanism. It was found that the addition of basic oxides could improve the activity and stability due to these oxides could increase the adsorbed oxygen, reduce the size of Ni particle and improve the interaction between Ni and support, in particular, the MgO interacts with Ni to form MgNiO 2 spinel, which contribute to promote Ni dispersion and inhibit Ni aggregation. Moreover, the results suggested that the resistance to carbon deposition has something to do with the surface basicity. To a certain degree, the increasing the amount of basic site and enhancing alkaline strength could suppress the carbon deposition of Ni based catalysts. This is mainly because that the basic site is beneficial to CO 2 adsorption and activation based the DFT calculations, which could accelerate the elimination of carbon deposition by provide more oxygen species. These results could provide some useful information to the design and synthesis of Ni-based catalysts.
