Regulating Dehydrogenation Kinetics of MgH2 via Late-Transition-Metal-Substituted Nb2AC MAX Phases (A = Fe, Ni, Cu)

Yanmei Chen,Qirtas Malik,Bolun Wang,Yu Wang,Mian Li,Tao Bo,Jianming Xue,Jianxin Zou,Qing Huang

The development of earth-abundant, low-cost, highly active catalysts to accelerate hydrogen absorption/desorption kinetics in Mg-based materials is critical for hydrogen energy applications. Here, we synthesize three MAX phases with nonconventional A-site elements─Nb2FeC, Nb2NiC, and Nb2CuC─and directly incorporate them into MgH2 matrices without hazardous HF etching. All three MgH2-10 wt % Nb2AC (A = Fe, Ni, Cu) composites exhibit a reduction in onset dehydrogenation temperature from 320 °C to approximately 190 °C, and their dehydrogenation temperature and kinetic behavior are markedly superior to Nb2AlC, demonstrating that substituting the A-site element Al with late transition metals substantially enhances catalytic performance toward MgH2 dehydrogenation. Among them, the MgH2-10 wt % Nb2NiC composite shows optimal performance, releasing ∼6.30 wt % H2 at 300 °C within 10 min and absorbing ∼5.01 wt % H2 at 175 °C within 3 min, while maintaining good cyclic stability. Experimental and theoretical results jointly confirm that Nb2NiC functions as an efficient electron-mediated catalyst, weakening Mg–H bonds and promoting H2 dissociation via interfacial electron transfer, thus significantly improving hydrogen storage kinetics.

Magnetic graphene oxide-anchored Ni/Cu nanoparticles with a Cu-rich surface for transfer hydrogenation of nitroaromatics

Hongbin Shi,Qing Liu,Xiaofeng Dai,Teng Zhang,Yuling Shi,Tao Wang

The bimetallic nanoparticles compositing of Ni-rich core and Cu-rich shell (Ni/Cu NPs) were successfully synthesized by a liquid-phase thermal decomposition method. The content of copper and nickel in Ni/Cu NPs was controllable by adjusting the ratio of two metal precursors, copper formate (Cuf) and nickel acetate tetrahydrate (Ni(OAc) 2 ∙4H 2 O). Ni/Cu NPs were further anchored on graphene oxide (GO) to prepare a magnetic composite catalyst, called Ni/Cu-GO. The dispersibility of Ni/Cu NPs in solution was enhanced by GO anchoring to prevent the sintering and aggregation during the reaction process, thereby ensuring the catalytic and cycling performance of the catalyst. The catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) reaction of nitroaromatics was investigated when ammonia borane was used as the hydrogen source. Cu dominated the main catalytic role in the reaction, while Ni played a synergistic role of catalysis and providing magnetic properties for separation. The Ni 7 /Cu 3 -GO catalyst exhibited the best catalytic performance with the conversion and yield of 99% and 96%, respectively, when 2-methyl-5-nitrophenol was used as the substrate. The Ni 7 /Cu 3 -GO catalyst also exhibited excellent cyclic catalytic performance with the 5-amino-2-methylphenol yield of above 90% after six cycles. In addition, the Ni 7 /Cu 3 -GO catalyst could be quickly recycled by magnetic separation. Moreover, the Ni 7 /Cu 3 -GO catalyst showed good catalytic performance for halogen-containing nitroaromatics without dehalogenation.

Pure Acetylene Semihydrogenation over Ni–Cu Bimetallic Catalysts: Effect of the Cu/Ni Ratio on Catalytic Performance

Shuzhen Zhou,Lihua Kang,Xuening Zhou,Zhu Xu,Mingyuan Zhu

Ethylene is an important chemical raw material and with the increasing consumption of petroleum resources, the production of ethylene through the calcium carbide acetylene route has important research significance. In this work, a series of bimetallic catalysts with different Cu/Ni molar ratios are prepared by co-impregnation method for the hydrogenation of calcium carbide acetylene to ethylene. The introduction of an appropriate amount of Cu effectively inhibits not only the formation of ethane and green oil, thus increasing the selectivity of ethylene, but also the formation of carbon deposits, which improves the stability of the catalyst. The ethylene selectivity of the Ni–Cu bimetallic catalyst increases from 45% to 63% compared with the Ni monometallic counterpart and the acetylene conversion still can reach 100% at the optimal conditions of 250 °C, 8000 mL·g−1·h−1and V(H2)/V(C2H2) = 3. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy confirmed that the metal particles were highly dispersed on the support, High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and H2-Temperature programmed reduction proved that there was an interaction between Ni and Cu, combined with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations results, Cu transferred electrons to Ni changed the Ni electron cloud density in NiCuxcatalysts, thus reducing the adsorption of acetylene and ethylene, which is favorable to ethylene selectivity. Keywords:Ni–Cu;calcium carbide acetylene;selective hydrogenation;ethylene

Antibacterial Activity of M-MOF Nanomaterials (M = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn): Impact of Metal Centers

Ao Ding,Yupeng He,Fei-Fei Chen,Yan Yu

Bacterial infections result in significant burdens on public health, especially with the increasing prevalence of antibiotic resistance owing to the overuse of antibiotics. The development of the next-generation nanoantibacterial materials as alternatives to antibiotics is urgently needed. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been emerging as promising antibacterial materials. However, the impact of metal centers on the properties and antibacterial activity of MOFs has not been clarified to date. In this work, five M-MOF nanomaterials (M = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn) are synthesized with 2-methylimidazole as an organic ligand. Subsequently, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration, and time-kill curves are studied to evaluate their antibacterial activity. In addition, the destruction of the bacterial cells after treatment with M-MOFs is observed via scanning electron microscopy. The experimental results demonstrate that the Co-MOF and Zn-MOF polyhedra exhibit optimal antibacterial activity. They can effectively inhibit the growth of both Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli and Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus at a low concentration. On the other hand, the Fe-MOF irregular particles show the weakest antibacterial activity among five M-MOFs and the antibacterial activity of the Ni-MOF and Cu-MOF nanosheets are comparable to each other. The huge difference in antibacterial activity of M-MOFs is attributed to the difference in the shape and size, specific surface area, surface charge, ion release, and production of reactive oxygen species. Overall, this study clarifies the relationship between metal centers in M-MOFs and their antibacterial activity.

Investigation on melt growth (Mg, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn)O oxide ceramics prepared by laser directed energy deposition

Dongjiang Wu,Weijie Lv,Zheng Li,Xuexin Yu,Cong Zhou,Bi Zhang,Wei Wang,Huanyue Zhang,Guangyi Ma,Fangyong Niu

High-entropy oxides (HEOs) have attracted extensive research interest due to their unique structural features, customizable elemental compositions, and tunable functional properties. Nevertheless, the complexity, low efficiency, and high cost of the existing HEO synthesis methods place limitations on them. In this study, Laser directed energy deposition (LDED) was employed to synthesize (Mg, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn)O oxides. Additionally, the novelty of applying the LDED process to multicationic systems was emphasized. The comparison between specimens fabricated from mixed powder via LDED(MP) and those fabricated from pre-sintered powder via LDED(SP) encompasses macroscopic morphology, microstructure, and performance. The results showed that SP significantly enhanced the density from 86.44 % to 96.70 % compared to MP. The macro-segregation of Cu and Cu 2 O in the phase composition was observed in MP and SP. High-temperature pre-sintering promoted the solid solution formation of Co and Ni during LDED, leading to more severe micro-segregation of Co and Ni. When employed as anodes in lithium-ion batteries, MP and SP have outstanding long-term cycle stability, according to electrochemical performance studies. At a current density of 100 mAg −1 , these specimens maintained a capacity retention rate of 100 % even after 200 cycles. The initial discharge capacities of MP and SP were respectively 477.73 mAh g −1 and 373.86 mAh g −1 . This study is expected to present a novel approach for the rapid synthesis of (Mg, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn)O oxide ceramics .

Microstructural evolution and catalytic properties of novel high-entropy spinel ferrites MFe2O4 (M= Mg, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn)

Jianping Ai,Yaping Shuai,Min Hu,Lihong Cheng,Siling Luo,Wenkui Li,Zhiqin Chen,Liling Hu,Zehua Zhou

A novel class of high-entropy (HE) spinel ferrites (Mg 0.2 Co 0.2 Ni 0.2 Cu 0.2 Zn 0.2 )Fe 2 O 4 , have been successfully synthesized by the solution combustion synthesis method followed by heat-treatment at 500–1500 °C. The resultant spinel ferrites were systematically investigated by various methods including XRD , SEM, TEM, EDS, Raman spectra, etc. It was demonstrated that the entropy drives a reversible transformation between a single-phase state and multiphase. And the entropy predominates the thermodynamic landscape. The as-fabricated high-entropy (Mg 0.2 Co 0.2 Ni 0.2 Cu 0.2 Zn 0.2 )Fe 2 O 4 solid solution is single-phase with homogeneous transition-metal element distribution. Moreover, a trade-off between grain growth and crystallization during heat-treatment process; the average grain size of product is only 352.96 nm after being annealed at 1000 °C for 3 h probably due to “sluggish diffusion effect”. The resultant HE spinel ferrites (Mg 0.2 Co 0.2 Ni 0.2 Cu 0.2 Zn 0.2 )Fe 2 O 4 were first used as a heterogeneous catalyst of peroxodisulfate (PDS). Compared with basic solution condition, the HE spinel ferrite/PDS system exhibited a higher degradation rate for the removal of rhodamine B (RhB) and tetracycline (TC) at initial pH range of 3.0–5.1. Both the hydroxyl radicals and sulfate radicals played an important role on RhB and TC degradation. The high catalytic efficiency and good stability of high-entropy (Mg 0.2 Co 0.2 Ni 0.2 Cu 0.2 Zn 0.2 )Fe 2 O 4 catalyst demonstrates that it is suitable for application in wastewater disposal.

The Synthesis of Ni–Cu Alloy Nanofibers via Vacuum Thermal Co-reduction Toward Hydrogen Generation from Hydrazine Decomposition

Wang Hefang,Fu Qinglong,Zhang Guanyan,Sun Yangyang

Abstract A safe and reductant-free method based on co-reduction of nickel and copper oxides via vacuum thermal treatment has been developed for the synthesis of Ni–Cu alloy nanofibers, which includes electrospinning of a nickel acetate/copper acetate/polyvinylpolypyrrolidone (NiAc/CuAc/PVP) precursor solution, followed by vacuum thermal reduction. On account of the synergistic effect between Cu and Ni, the Ni–Cu alloy nanofibers catalyst with an optimal composition exhibits good catalytic performance for the decomposition of hydrous hydrazine in NaOH solution. Graphical Abstract Ni–Cu alloy nanofibers have been prepared by a vacuum thermal co-reduction method, and further used as catalysts for hydrous hydrazine decomposition.

Activity and selectivity of Ni–Cu bimetallic zeolites catalysts on biomass conversion for bio-aromatic and bio-phenols

Yunwu Zheng,Jida Wang,Donghua Li,Can Liu,Yi Lu,Xu Lin,Zhifeng Zheng

To improve the quality of bio-oil and minimize coke formation, ex-situ catalytic biomass pyrolysis vapor upgrading to high-grade bio-aromatic and phenol compounds with Py-GC × GC/MS at different nickel-to-copper ratios was investigated. At the same time, the deoxygenation efficiency, structure-activity relationship, deactivation mechanism and possible pathways between combined mono- and bimetallic catalysts were also demonstrated. Ni and Cu species could be well dispersed, and the HZSM-5 support maintained the MFI crystal structure after bimetallic Ni–Cu modification, but the surface area, pore volume, and total acidity decreased. Bimetallic Ni–Cu catalysts showed better deoxygenation efficiency than monometallic catalysts, which had more advantages in the preparation of aliphatic hydrocarbons (29.86%) than mono- and bimetallic catalysts, which favored the production of aromatics (28.89%). Higher-Ni-loading catalysts promoted the formation of aliphatic hydrocarbons, aromatics and alkanes due to decarboxylation, decarbonylation and aromatization reactions, and higher-Cu-loading catalysts enhanced the olefin and phenol yields due to dehydration and demethylation reactions. Overall, the highest yields of bio-aromatic compounds and phenols were46.78% and 36.34%, respectively, at Ni-to-Cu ratios of 1:1 and 1:2, due to the high total acid amount and suitable average pore size for bio-aromatics and the low acidity and large pore size for phenols. The bimetallic Ni–Cu catalyst significantly increased the quality of bio-oil and reduced coke deposition.

Effect of ZrB2 on the wear resistance and corrosion properties of nanocrystalline Ni-Cu coatings fabricated by electrodeposition

Xingtao Cheng,Yi He,Siming Yan,Ruxia Song,Zhiyuan Li,Liping Yan,Hongjie Li,Kaijun Wei,Qing Yuan,Shijun Xu

In this study, a pulsed electrodeposition approach was used to create a Ni-Cu/ZrB 2 composite coating on the surface of J55 steel. Ni-Cu/ZrB 2 composite coatings with different material additions were prepared, and the surface morphology, grain size, microhardness and wear and corrosion resistance were investigated. The results confirmed that the embedding of ZrB 2 in the Ni-Cu coating can refine the grains and make the coating surface denser. Furthermore, ZrB 2 can effectively increase the wear resistance and corrosion resistance of the coating; the Ni-Cu/ZrB 2 (1.0 g/L) composite coating reflects this by having the shallowest and narrowest wear cross-section as well as the lowest average friction coefficient (0.537). Additionally, the composite coating has the highest impedance modulus, reaching 83.60 kΩ/cm 2 . The composite coating improved corrosion resistance by 63.1 % compared to the pure sample. The enhancement in the coating's corrosion resistance can be attributed to three factors. Firstly, the addition of zirconium diborate refines the coating grain and changes the corrosion type from pitting corrosion to homogeneous corrosion. Secondly, zirconium diborate forms a physical barrier against corrosive ions. Lastly, the formation of the oxide layer on the coating during the process of corrosion, also enhances the material's resistance to corrosion.

A Ni-Cu/CuPP composite coating with good wear resistance and long-term corrosion resistance for seawater applications

Xingtao Cheng,Kaijun Wei,Hongjie Li,Na Teng,Shijun Xu,Quangang Chen,Xianmin Gong,Yi He,Siming Yan

At the present time, the subject of seawater scouring and corrosion phenomena is attracting considerable attention. Accordingly, the present study involved the synthesis of CuPP materials and the preparation of Ni-Cu/CuPP coatings for deployment in marine environments characterised by elevated stress and corrosion. The results show that CuPP can effectively enhance the wear resistance and long-term corrosion resistance of Ni-Cu coatings, which is attributed to ‘fine grain strengthening’ and ‘diffusion strengthening’. Furthermore, the formation of a friction transfer film and the transformation of the wear mechanism are the primary factors contributing to the exceptional wear resistance of the Ni-Cu/CuPP composite coatings.
