Hierarchical nanoporous Al–SiO2 particles were prepared in this study by dissolving template method. The hierarchical nanoporous Al–SiO2 particles with hollow structure were analyzed by transmission electron microscope (TEM), energy dispersive spectrometer
(EDS), scanning electron microscope (SEM), nitrogen adsorption stripping curves and Barrett-Joyner-Halenda (BJH) pore size distribution curves. Hierarchical nanoporous Al–SiO2/Ni–Mo composite electrodes were prepared by composite deposition of hierarchical nanoporous
Al–SiO2 particles onto electroplating bath of Ni–Mo. Results showed that the specific surface area for the hierarchical nanoporous Al–SiO2 sample was 396 m2/g, with pore volume being 1.37 cm3/g and mesoporous pore size being 3.3
nm. The hydrogen evolution electrocatalytic activities for the composite electrodes reached the optimal value when the concentration of the hierarchical nanoporous Al–SiO2 in the electroplating bath was 2 g/L, indicating that their “foam” structure did not only
enhance the electrode surface area but also effectively improved the electrocatalytic properties of aluminum and showed that the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution by the hierarchical nanoporous Al–SiO2/Ni–Mo composite electrodes had more advantages than that of the
Ni–Mo electrodes alone.

The synthesis of cost-effective and high-performance electrocatalysts for water splitting is the main challenge in electrochemical hydrogen production . In this study, we adopted a high throughput method to prepare bi-metallic catalysts for oxygen/hydrogen evolution reactions (OER/HER). A series of Ni–Mo alloy electrocatalysts with tunable compositions were prepared by a simple co-sputtering method. Due to the synergistic effect between Ni and Mo, the intrinsic electrocatalytic activity of the Ni–Mo alloy electrocatalysts is improved, resulting in excellent HER and OER performances. The Ni 90 Mo 10 electrocatalyst shows the best HER performance, with an extremely low overpotential of 58 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , while the Ni 40 Mo 60 electrocatalyst shows an overpotential of 258 mV at 10 mA cm −2 in OER. More significantly, the assembled Ni 40 Mo 60 //Ni 90 Mo 10 electrolyzer only needs a cell voltage of 1.57 V to reach 10 mA cm −2 for overall water splitting .

Catalytic doping is considered one of the most efficient strategies to achieve superior performance of MgH2, as rationally designed catalytic components can exhibit synergistic effects, thereby optimizing the kinetic pathways. In this study, the hydrothermal method was adopted to prepare clustered Ni–Mo–S catalysts, which were used to modify MgH2 to enhance its kinetic performance. Experimental results demonstrate that the molar proportion of Ni to Mo significantly impacts the modification effect of Ni–Mo–S catalysts on MgH2. Furthermore, the catalyst whose molar ratio of Ni/Mo is 7:2 achieves the optimal catalytic efficiency. Specifically, at 125 °C, MgH2-5 wt % Ni–Mo–S can absorb 4.61 wt % H2 in 1200 s. At a relatively low temperature of 250 °C, it manifests a rapid dehydrogenation rate and releases 5.81 wt % H2 in 2000 s. The hydrogenation (41.98 kJ/mol) and dehydrogenation (86.41 kJ/mol) activation energies of MgH2-5 wt % Ni–Mo–S are reduced by 48.87 and 43.79% compared to as-milled MgH2, respectively. Mechanism analysis suggests that this improvement may be ascribed to the following reasons: (1) The hydrogen pump effect of Mg2Ni/Mg2NiH4 facilitates the hydrogen diffusion; (2) electron transfer between Mo species with different valence states weakens the Mg–H bonds; (3) the in situ formed MgS serves as diffusion channels for hydrogen atoms, expediting hydrogen transport. This work provides a valuable outlook for constructing highly active catalysts for MgH2 hydrogen storage.

Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) has prospect to becoming clean and renewable technology for hydrogen production and Ni–Mo alloy is among the best HER catalysts in alkaline electrolytes. Here, an in situ topotactic reduction method to synthesize ultrathin 2D Ni–Mo alloy nanosheets for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution is reported. Due to its ultrathin structure and tailored composition, the as-synthesized Ni–Mo alloy shows an overpotential of 35 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , along with a Tafel slope of 45 mV decade −1 , demonstrating a comparable intrinsic activity to state-of-art commercial Pt/C catalyst. Besides, the vertically aligned assemble structure of the 2D NiMo nanosheets on conductive substrate makes the electrode “superaerophobic,” thus leading to much faster bubble releasing during HER process and therefore shows faster mass transfer behavior at high current density as compared with drop drying Pt/C catalyst on the same substrate. Such in situ topotactic conversion finds a way to design and fabricate low-cost, earth-abundant non-noble metal based ultrathin 2D nanostructures for electrocatalytic issues.

Metallic glasses (MGs), despite exhibiting superior electrochemical catalytic and sensing activity to crystalline solids, remain difficult to rationally design because the structural units that directly correlate to active sites are poorly resolved. Here, we address this challenge by showing that a small change in Ni content (±4 at%) in Ni-Mo-P-B MGs gives precise control of short‑range-ordered (SRO) polyhedral motifs and their medium‑range connections. Synchrotron X-ray analysis reveals that the Ni 64 Mo 16 P 16 B 4 (Ni 64 ) stabilizes ten-coordinated (Z10) bi-capped square archimedean antiprisms (BSAPs) as the dominant SRO polyhedral, whereas Ni 60 Mo 20 P 16 B 4 (Ni 60 ) and Ni 68 Mo 12 P 16 B 4 (Ni 68 ) are dominated by nine-coordinate (Z9) tricapped trigonal prisms (TTPs). Crucially, this engineered SRO dramatically enhances the electrochemical glucose sensing: Ni 64 delivers ultrahigh sensitivity, a wide linear range, and stable operation over seven days, whose performance is far superior to conventional crystalline probes. First-principles calculations reveal that only at a Ni/Mo ratio of 4 does short-range chemical ordering favor the highly symmetric Z10 BSAPs with two Mo atoms occupying the two polyhedral caps. These Mo‑capped Z10 clusters optimally modulate Mo-Ni electronic interactions, lowering the *OH adsorption barrier and boosting catalytic reactivity. A miniaturized glucose sensor was fabricated by integrated the MG with a screen-printed electrode, demonstrating the practical applicability. Notably, we found that the dominant polyhedra show homology to local building blocks of nearby crystalline phases, suggesting that amorphous structures inherit crystal-like motifs that govern both stability and properties. Our work establishes an atomic-scale structural engineering paradigm for MG design, bridging crystalline-amorphous structural homology with functional optimization, and deepening the understanding of structure–property correlations in MG systems.

Electrocatalytic hydrogen production is a green and feasible method for obtaining hydrogen energy. However, the bottlenecks of high cost, low catalytic activity and inferior stability urgently need to be addressed, and constructing advanced catalysts with optimized microscopic morphology and crystal structure is a feasible and effective strategy to overcome this barrier. Herein, an artful strategy of in-situ grown coupled with N doping and C encapsulation was employed to obtain the NC/NiO–Mo/NF with biomimetic cattle stomach-liked porous structure, which can offer shortcut for ion transportation and expose more active sites for H∗ adsorption. Particularly, the constructed NiMoO 4 –NiO heterojunction in NC/NiO–Mo/NF can significantly boost the hydrogen evolution activity. Meanwhile, the density functional theory (DFT) confirm that the construction of the crystalline-amorphous heterojunction induces electron transfer from NiMoO 4 to NiO, promoting a downshift in the d-band center, thereby achieving a near-thermoneutral free energy for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The de-signed electrocatalyst exhibits exceptional HER activity, with a small overpotential of 48 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . It is important that NC/NiO–Mo/NF exhibits exceptional HER stability, with current density of 50 mA cm −2 for 100 h. The finding provides a feasible strategy for the fabrication of nonprecious-metal-based HER electrocatalysts with high activity and stability toward industrial water electrolysis.

Lignin, a three-dimensional network biopolymer, presents catalytic challenges due to its recalcitrant C(aryl)–O/C(aryl)–C bonds and diverse oxygen functionalities. To address this, we engineered Mo 2 C-decorated Ni-Mo bimetallic catalysts (Ni- Mo 2 C@NC-x) via dopamine-mediated self-assembly, achieving unprecedented 2D nanosheet architectures. The optimized Ni-Mo 2 [email protected] exhibited a 10.2-fold surface area enhancement (230.4 m 2 ·g⁻ 1 vs. 22.6 m 2 ·g⁻ 1 for Ni@NC), maximizing accessible active sites. The highly dispersed MoC 2 phase enhanced the graphitization degree, facilitated electron transfer while simultaneously increased Lewis and Brønsted acid densities. Furthermore, the Mo 2 C phase effectively enriched Mo 5+ species, which promoted selective cleavage of C–O and C–C bonds via oxygen vacancy generation. The synergistic interplay between the Mo 2 C phase and Ni metal centers achieved 95.69 % lignin oil conversion with 85.25 % cycloalkane selectivity. This work establishes a multifunctional catalyst design paradigm where tailored defect-acid cooperativity overcomes lignin depolymerization-deoxygenation trade-offs.

The batch production of high-purity hydrogen is a key problem that restricts the progress of fuel cells and the blueprint for achieving carbon neutrality. Transition-metal chalcogenide heterojunctions exhibit certain activity toward electrochemical overall water splitting (EOWS), but their high-current-density catalytic performances are still unsatisfactory due to the slow kinetic progression (H* or *O → *OOH). Inspired by the “electron pocket” theory, we designed a Ni-Mo bimetallic disulfide interface heterojunction electrocatalyst system (NM-IHJ-V) with high electronic storage capacity around the Fermi level (−0.5 eV, +0.5 eV) (e-DFE), which injects more power into the kinetic progression processes of intermediate species in the EOWS process. Consequently, it achieves a superhigh current density of 2 A cm–2 level for EOWS (only 1.98 V voltage is needed), which is 11.23-fold higher than that of the benchmarked Pt/C//IrO2 (178 mA cm–2@1.98 V), as well as an excellent long-term stability of 200 h. Most strikingly, NM-IHJ-V can efficiently produce hydrogen at currents up to 5 A. Our proposed strategy of constructing catalysts to produce hydrogen at superhigh current density through the electron pocket theory will supply valuable insights for the designing other catalytic systems.

O2 activation for the green conversion of chemicals has attracted a great deal of attentions in the field of chemistry. Developing catalysts for aerobic oxidation with both prominent instinct activity and desirable micro/nanostructure remains a tough challenge. In this work, hierarchical hollow Co–Ni–Mo–O mixed metallic-oxide nanotubes constructed by ultrathin CoMoO4/NiMoO4 nanosheets were fabricated using a sacrificial template method and employed as catalysts in aerobic oxidative desulfurization (AODS) of a model fuel. With air as the oxygen source, the catalyst demonstrated surprisingly high activity by achieving complete conversion of dibenzothiophene under mild reaction conditions. Besides, the catalyst demonstrated excellent stability on continuous repeated use. A further mechanism study reveals the electron coordination and transfer between different metal species as well as the activation route of O2. Based on the above-mentioned results, the catalyst which allows a good exposure of metal centers, a high concentration of oxygen vacancies, and the desired electronic structure is expected to serve as the high-performance AODS catalyst.

Non-noble bimetallic NiMo supported on zeolitic imidazolate framework-derived porous carbon (NiMo@FDC) catalyst for lignin depolymerization has been successfully developed. The synergism between Ni and Mo species in NiMo@FDC catalyst could promote the catalytic cleavage of C–O linkages in Kraft lignin. At a low reaction temperature of 240 °C and under 4 MPa H2, the lignin liquefaction yield was 98.85 wt% and minimum coke yield was 1 wt%, particularly when using 10%NiMo@FDC catalyst. Additionally, at a high reaction temperature of 300 °C and under 2 MPa H2, there was an overall yield of 86 wt% of liquid product and 42 wt% of petroleum ether soluble product. The higher heating value (HHV) increased from 27.65 MJ kg−1 to 34.11 MJ kg−1. In the cycling experiment, the bifunctional catalyst also demonstrated reversability and stability. The synergy of Ni hydrogenation sites and Mo coupled adsorption sites identified a possible mechanism path, which could offer considerable potential for lignin depolymerization.

The chemical upgrade of the waste polyester coating on the surface of aluminum cans to value-added products can not only decrease the release of toxic substances, but also improve the quality of aluminum in the recycling process. In this study, different types of zeolite molecular sieve catalysts loaded with Ni, Mo and Co were synthesized, and utilized in the rapid catalytic pyrolysis of polyester coating. Among them, the Ni/ZSM-5 achieved the maximum aromatic compounds yield of 68.43 % at 600 ℃. A series of characterization results demonstrated that the embedding of transition metals (like Ni) could promote the cyclization and aromatization of products through deoxidation and dehydrogenation reactions by changing the pore structure and increasing total acid content (Brønsted and Lewis acids) of the ZSM-5 molecular sieve. Meanwhile, the thermodynamics of polyester coating during catalytic pyrolysis was studied by thermogravimetric method. The average activation energy of Ni/ZSM-5 catalytic pyrolysis of polyester coating is 238.65 kJ/mol. Furthermore, even after being reused for over 5 cycles, the catalyst can still maintain a relatively high yield of aromatic compounds (exceeding 60 %). Finally, the mechanism for aromatic compounds formation from Ni-modified ZSM-5 in-situ catalyzed polyester coating pyrolysis was proposed. This work provided useful ideas for the subsequent treatment of solid wastes.

Seawater splitting provides a sustainable approach for large-scale hydrogen production without straining freshwater resources. However, the challenge lies in achieving high catalytic activity and stability due to electrocatalyst deactivation from structural degradation, poor corrosion resistance, and surface instability in both alkaline and seawater electrolysis. To address this, we propose a novel strategy combining Fe-doping with dual-phase lattice strain engineering in nickel-molybdenum transition metal nitrides (TMNs). The Fe-doped Ni 3 Mo 3 N/Mo 2 N electrocatalyst exhibits compressive lattice strains of −4.52% and −2.91% in the Ni 3 Mo 3 N and Mo 2 N phases, respectively, enhancing its structural integrity and electronic properties. Consequently, Fe-Ni 3 Mo 3 N/Mo 2 N achieves low overpotentials of 167 and 371 mV at current densities of 10 and 500 mA cm −2 , respectively, in 1 M alkaline seawater, with exceptional stability over 100 h at 100 and 500 mA cm −2 . Theoretical calculations reveal that these compressive strains optimize the adsorption of OER intermediates and improve catalytic kinetics. This work demonstrates the promise of dual-phase lattice strain engineering in TMNs for efficient, durable, and scalable electrocatalysts in seawater electrolysis, a strategy that has yet to be fully explored for OER.
