NiCoP–CoP heterostructural nanowires grown on hierarchical Ni foam as a novel electrocatalyst for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction

Xingchen Gao,Kaixin Lu,Jianjun Chen,Jie Min,Deliang Zhu,Manlin Tan

The design and manufacture of effective non-noble metal catalysts for the H 2 evolution reaction (HER) are urgent for realizing a cost-effective hydrogen production . We report herein on flower-like structures consisting of NiCoP–CoP heterostructural nanowires grown directly on the hierarchically porous nickel framework (NiCoP–CoP/Ni/NF) to achieve a highly efficient HER in alkaline solution (1.0 M KOH). The NiCoP–CoP/Ni/NF is synthesized by electrodeposition of porous Ni layers on Ni foam, followed by simple hydrothermal reaction and phosphorization. For HER, the binder-free NiCoP–CoP/Ni/NF electrode can reach 10 mA cm −2 current density at a quite low overpotential of 49 mV, because of the combination of porous Ni layers and highly active NiCoP–CoP nanowires. In addition, the NiCoP/CoP heterostructures exhibited remarkable stability under the long-term durability test. This work provides a new strategy that combines electrodeposition and hydrothermal reaction to synthesize effective HER catalysts.

Trifunctional electrocatalysts based on feather-like NiCoP 3D architecture for hydrogen evolution, oxygen evolution, and urea oxidation reactions

Liming Yang,Feng Ru,Jinzhuo Shi,Tao Yang,Chunyu Guo,Yafeng Chen,Enhui Wang,Zhentao Du,Kuo-Chih Chou,Xinmei Hou

Finding efficient and versatile catalysts that can both produce clean energy H 2 and treat wastewater is an important matter to solve energy shortages and wastewater pollution. Herein, a feather-like NiCoP supported on NF was synthesized via the two-step hydrothermal-phosphorization process. NiCoP/NF requires only overpotentials of 44 and 203 mV to reach 10 mA cm −2 for HER and OER in 1 M KOH, respectively. Besides, NiCoP/NF requires only 1.13 V (vs RHE) to achieve 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH containing 0.33 M urea. DFT calculation shows that NiCoP exhibits enhanced DOS in the Fermi level attachment, which promotes charge transfer. Subsequently, the trifunctional NiCoP/NF, for overall water splitting, requires a lower potential of 1.48 V to gain 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH. For urea electrolysis, NiCoP/NF requires just 1.36 V to drive 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH with 0.33 M urea. This work provides extraordinary insights into electrolytic hydrogen production and wastewater treatment through simple preparative methods. The performance of the prepared catalyst is at a high level in non-noble metal.

Dual Interfacial Engineering of Cracked NiCoP Electrode with Directed Bubbling for Efficient and Stable Hydrogen Evolution

Zhuming Mao,Yansong Zhou,Yina Guo,Yanjing Liu,Yang Liu,Minghui Cui,Qiongrong Ou,Shuyu Zhang

Constructing stable electrodes is the premise of practical water electrolysis. Unfortunately, the catalytic performance under industrial conditions encounters critical challenges in bubble dynamics, wherein the violent bubble accumulation not only blocks active sites against reactants but also induces excessive stress upon detachment, leading to catalyst delamination from substrates. Here, a substrate-strengthened and crack-configured NiCoP electrode is developed, which features robust catalyst-substrate binding strength and weakened adhesion at the catalyst-bubble interface. The precisely engineered dual interfaces enable improved mechanical stability, facilitated bubble desorption, and optimized reaction kinetics for high-rate hydrogen evolution. The catalyst exhibited an ultra-low overpotential of 288 mV at 1000 mA cm −2 , with robust stability over 200 h. Furthermore, when served in an anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer (AEMWE), a minimized cell voltage of 1.76 V is recorded at 1000 mA cm −2 and operated stably for 150 h. This work provides intriguing concepts for designing electrodes toward industrial green hydrogen applications.

Homologous NiCoP/CoP hetero-nanosheets supported on N-doped carbon nanotubes for high-rate hybrid supercapacitors

Tan Dang,Donghai Wei,Guiqing Zhang,Lei Wang,Qinggang Li,Huaizhi Liu,Zuoying Cao,Guanhua Zhang,Huigao Duan

Rational design of highly active electrode materials made of low-cost and earth-abundant transition metal phosphides is essential to boost the energy density and overall performance of electrochemical capacitors. In this work, homologous 3D NiCoP/CoP hetero-nanosheets network supported on N-doped carbon nanotubes are synthesized through one-step phosphorization of nickel cobalt hydroxide. The synergistic effects between NiCoP and CoP in the heterointerface are studied systematically through tuning the molar ratio of original Ni/Co. As a result, the optimized N-CNTs@NiCoP/CoP (with the Ni/Co ratio of 1:2) reveals a remarkable specific capacity of 152 mAh g −1  at 1 A g −1 and a superior rate capability with a capacity retention of 61% even at 30 A g −1 . A hybrid supercapacitor assembled with N-CNTs@NiCoP/CoP cathode and ZIF-67-derived porous carbon anode exhibits a high energy density of 45.5 Wh kg −1  at power density of 784 W kg −1 and excellent stability of 87% retention after 10,000 cycles at 12 A g −1 . Such excellent electrochemical performance of N-CNTs@NiCoP/CoP is mainly ascribed to the strong synergistic effect between NiCoP and CoP in their heterojunctions, enlarged surface area and active sites due to the 3D nanosheets network and conductive N-CNTs support.

In-situ fabrication of high-performance heterostructure cathode via integration of amorphous-crystalline NiCoP and layered double hydroxide

Rongxin Chen,Xinyu He,Yunfan Liu,Wenlong Xu,Trang Thuy Nguyen,Li Cheng

Coupling two different active components to construct heterogeneous structures has become an effective approach to address issues such as poor electrode material conductivity and sluggish kinetics. Compared to highly crystalline metal compounds with fewer active sites and prone to structural expansion/compression strain, amorphous electrode materials exhibit characteristics such as high surface area, rich active sites, and excellent corrosion resistance . Therefore, introducing amorphous-crystalline coexisting metal compound materials in heterogeneous structures may be a promising design strategy. This study prepared NiCoP (NCP) nanowires with different degrees of crystallinity, confirming that the coexisting amorphous-crystalline NCP (a/c-NCP) exhibited optimal electrochemical performance. Subsequently, a core-shell heterostructure (NPNL) composed of a/c-NCP nanowires and layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets was in situ synthesized on carbon cloth using a simple hydrothermal method . Comprehensive characterization and DFT calculations demonstrate that the amorphous-crystalline heterostructure enhances the conductivity, Faradaic activity, and lifespan of the composite material. The NPNL electrode exhibits remarkable specific capacity of 1506.0 C g −1 and maintains 88.5 % after 8000 charge-discharge cycles. This research on heterogeneous electrodes based on amorphous-crystalline metal compounds provides new insights and technical guidance for next-generation energy storage materials .

Pr-doped NiCoP nanowire arrays for efficient hydrogen evolution in both acidic and alkaline media

Yu Zhang,Keke Xu,Bo Zhang,Shundong Guan,Xiuli Fu,Zhijian Peng

Enhancing the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance of electrocatalysts is essential for developing clean energy, in which doping is one of the most effective ways. In this work, praseodymium-doped NiCoP nanowire arrays grown on nickel foam (Pr-NiCoP NWAs/NF) as electrocatalysts were synthesized through hydrothermal reaction and low temperature phosphating. The subsequent tests revealed that the introduction of Pr can modulate the morphology, density of the active sites and electrical conductivity of the NiCoP NWAs/NF. Thereby, the Pr-NiCoP NWAs/NF realized the fast reaction kinetics and exceptional HER performance. When the additive molar amount of Pr is 10%, Pr-NiCoP NWAs/NF electrode exhibited the highest electrocatalytic activity. Its overpotential corresponding to current density of 10 mA•cm −2 were 91 and 88 mV in 0.5 mol•L −1 H 2 SO 4 and 1 mol•L −1 KOH, the Tafel slope of which were 45.5 and 69.2 mV•dec −1 , respectively. Further, this work provides a promising strategy to explore highly efficient HER electrocatalysts.

Interface-engineered silicon photocathodes with a NiCoP catalyst-modified TiO2 nanorod array outlayer for photoelectrochemical hydrogen production in alkaline solution

Xuran Sun,Chang Liu,Peili Zhang,Lunlun Gong,Mei Wang

To assemble efficient photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells for total water splitting, the inexpensive photocathodes that are active and stable in alkaline solutions are strongly desired, as the known earth abundant catalyst-decorated photoanodes display high activity and good stability for water oxidation mostly in basic media. Herein, we report a Si-based composite photocathode with its front surface coated orderly by an N-doped graphene nanolayer (C N ) and a TiO 2 nanorod array (TiO 2(ALD/NR) ), which is loaded with Ni/Co phosphide catalyst (NiCoP) nanoparticles . The optimized Si/C N /TiO 2(ALD/NR) /NiCoP electrode exhibits a photocurrent density of −19.87 mA cm −2  at 0 V, an onset potential at 0.42 V vs RHE , and an applied bias photon-to-current efficiency of 1.28% for H 2 production in 1.0 M KOH under simulated 1 sun illumination . The impacts of TiO 2 NR array outlayer and surface-loaded NiCoP catalyst on interfacial energetics , charge transfer kinetics, and PEC performance of photocathodes are comparatively studied by using a series of reference electrodes. The results indicate that the TiO 2 NR array makes a major contribution to the evidently improved PEC activity of Si/C N /TiO 2(ALD/NR) , and that the NiCoP loaded on the surface of TiO 2 NR array greatly enhances the charge transfer efficiency and boosts HER kinetics of the photocathode.

NiCoP@amorphous carbon composites with 3D core-shell structure for high-performance asymmetric supercapacitors

Chunyu Xu,Yajuan Jiang,Shijie Ren,Tao Huang,Xiuyun Zhang,Guisheng Zhu,Kunpeng Jiang,Yunyun Zhao,Huarui Xu

In this paper, a facile bio-templating method is proposed to prepare NiCoP coated on amorphous carbon (NiCoP@AC) composite electrode materials with using bagasse as template and carbon source. NiCoP nanowire network arrays precursors coating on bagasse substrate with high yield were prepared via a novel synthesis strategy utilizing the toluene-water interface reaction process, which subsequently formed as NiCoP@AC composite electrode materials after phosphating process. The assembled core-shell structure attenuated the volume expansion during charging and discharging, additionally, the overall electrical conductivity of the composite was also improved owing to the characteristic of bagasse biochar. The NiCoP@AC electrode exhibited high specific capacitance (1706 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 ), outstanding rate capability (82.1 % capacity retention from 1 to 20 A g −1 ) and good cycling stability (retaining 80.0 % capacitance over 5000 cycles). In addition, bagasse biomass activated carbon (BAC) was prepared via a typical alkaline activation process for the use as negative electrode. The as-fabricated NiCoP@AC//BAC supercapacitor displayed a high energy density of 46.2 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 807.3 W kg −1 , and an excellent capacitance retention rate (88.5 % after 5000 cycles), suggesting that the as-prepared NiCoP@AC electrode materials have wide application prospects in high-performance supercapacitors.

NiCoP nanowire@NiCo-layered double hydroxides nanosheet heterostructure for flexible asymmetric supercapacitors

Xiangyang Gao,Yafei Zhao,Kaiqing Dai,Jingtao Wang,Bing Zhang,Xiangjian Shen

Reasonable design of multi-component composites with heterostructures is an effective strategy to improve the performances of energy storage materials. Herein, we fabricate a supercapacitor electrode consisting of a 3D hierarchical NiCoP@NiCo-LDH core/shell heterostructure on conductive carbon cloth (CC). Such special structure integrates the advantages of the highly interconnected nanosheets of NiCo-LDH, the high conductivity of NiCoP, excellent mechanical strength of CC, and the 3D hierarchical open structure. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal the superior electrical conductivity of NiCoP core and the powerful affinity for OH − of NiCo-LDH shell, which provide additional theoretical assistance for the improved electrochemical performance. Benefiting from the well-defined core/shell heterostructure and efficient synergetic effects among multi-components, the CC/NiCoP@NiCo-LDH electrode exhibits a high capacitance of 4.683 F cm −2 (1951 F g −1 ) at the current density of 1 mA cm −2 and an excellent rate capability of 89.3% at 20 mA cm −2 . In addition, a flexible asymmetric supercapacitor (FASC) composed of CC/NiCoP@NiCo-LDH as the positive electrode and activated carbon (AC) as the negative electrode achieves a high energy density of 57 Wh kg −1 at the power density of 850 W kg −1 and an outstanding cycling stability of 97% capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles. The above results suggest that CC/NiCoP@NiCo-LDH has potential to be selected as a candidate of positive electrode for constructing FASC.

Vacancies and interfaces engineering of core–shell heterostuctured NiCoP/NiO as trifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting and zinc-air batteries

Xiaolin Hu,Jichuan Fan,Ronghua Wang,Meng Li,Shikuan Sun,Chaohe Xu,Fusheng Pan

The electronic structures and properties of electrocatalysts, which depend on the physicochemical structure and metallic element components, could significantly affect their electrocatalytic performance and their future applications in Zn-air battery (ZAB) and overall water splitting (OWS). Here, by combining vacancies and heterogeneous interfacial engineering, three-dimensional (3D) core–shell NiCoP/NiO heterostructures with dominated oxygen vacancies have been controllably in-situ grown on carbon cloth for using as highly efficient electrocatalysts toward hydrogen and oxygen electrochemical reactions. Theoretical calculation and electrochemical results manifest that the hybridization of NiCoP core with NiO shell produces a strong synergistic electronic coupling effect. The oxygen vacancy can enable the emergence of new electronic states within the band gap, crossing the Fermi levels of the two spin components and optimizing the local electronic structure. Besides, the hierarchical core–shell NiCoP/NiO nanoarrays also endow the catalysts with multiple exposed active sites, faster mass transfer behavior, optimized electronic strutures and improved electrochemical performance during ZAB and OWS applications.

Calcination/phosphorization of dual Ni/Co-MOF into NiCoP/C nanohybrid with enhanced electrochemical property for high energy density asymmetric supercapacitor

Qingfeng Zhou,Yun Gong,Keyu Tao

Binary metal compounds have higher conductivity and richer redox reactions due to the co-existence and synergism of different transition metals. Besides, carbon in composite materials has the advantage of enhancing electronic conductivity to promote fast electron transmission. Herein, a series of Ni m P n /C, Ni 2 P/C, Co 2 P/C and Ni x Co 2-x P/C nanohybrids with different Ni/Co molar ratios were synthesized by in-situ calcination/phosphorization of MOF precursors. These nanohybrid materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrometer and electrochemical tests. The NiCoP/C material possesses a granular structure with NiCoP nanoparticles anchored in a large number of carbon. Taking advantage of the bimetallic synergism and carbon anchoring effect, the as-prepared NiCoP/C sample delivers the most prominent specific capacities of 775.7C g −1 at 1 A g −1 , and 582.4C g −1 at 20 A g −1 (20-fold) with a superior rate capability of 75.1% retention, much superior to those of the corresponding Ni m P n /C, Ni 2 P/C, Co 2 P/C, other Ni x Co 2-x P/C samples and various reported metal phosphide nanostructures/nanocomposites. Furthermore, the constructed NiCoP/C//activated carbon asymmetric supercapacitor can exhibit a high energy density of 47.6 Wh kg −1  at a power density of 798.9 W kg −1 , which was superior to those previously reported of Ni/Co phosphide nanomaterials.

Ru doping NiCoP hetero-nanowires with modulated electronic structure for efficient overall water splitting

Jianmei Cen,Pei Kang Shen,Yanfei Zeng

Herein, a novel Ru-doped bimetal phosphide (Ru-NiCoP) heterostructure electrocatalyst on Ni foam is successfully synthesized through a multi-step hydrothermal reaction , ion exchange, and phosphorization method for efficient overall water splitting in alkaline media. The doping of Ru and P can effectively optimize the electronic structure and expose more active sites. The unique 3D interconnected nanowires not only ensures the uniform distribution of Ru coupled with NiCoP, but also endows the Ru-NiCoP/NF with the large ECSA, the fast electron transport and the favorable reaction kinetics attributes. Benefiting from the compositional and structural advantages, Ru-NiCoP/NF catalyst exhibits significantly enhanced   catalytic activities along with excellent stability, only needing 32.3 mV at 10 mA cm −2 for HER and 233.8 mV at 50 mA cm −2 for OER . In particular, when Ru-NiCoP/NF is employed as both cathode and anode electrodes,   a small voltage of 1.50 V is required to reach 30 mA cm −2   for overall water splitting   with an impressive stability. This study provides an alternative strategy   on the design and development of high performance catalysts for   overall water splitting   and other energy conversion fields.
