Electrochemically engineered fabricated NiOOH/NiO nanospheres with oxygen vacancies for enhanced oxygen evolution reaction

Zhenwei Liu,Ying Li,Yushi Ding,Wenlong Huang,Yunlong Hao,Tianlong Wang,Wei Zhang,Chunsheng Zhuang

The demand for cost-effective and green hydrogen (H 2 ) has driven the development of high-performance, low-cost oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts. Herein, we combine electrodeposition and in-situ electrochemical oxidation to fabricate a novel and low-cost NiOOH/NiO composite structure supported on nickel foam (denoted as NiOOH/NiO(O v )/NF), featuring a nanosphere structure with oxygen vacancies. The optimized catalyst exhibits an exceptionally low overpotential of 220/290 mV at 20/100 mA cm −2 without iR correction and is remarkably stable for at least 120 h at 100 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that oxygen vacancies in NiO narrow the bandgap, enhance conductivity, reduce intermediate adsorption energy, and accelerate charge transfer through spin polarization, thereby improving OER intrinsic activity. The synergistic coupling of oxygen-deficient NiO with highly active NiOOH species significantly enhances OER performance, while the superhydrophilic/aerophobic surface facilitates rapid bubble detachment and electrolyte contact. This work provides a cost-effective alternative to noble-metal catalysts, demonstrating promising potential for scalable green hydrogen production via water splitting.

Phosphorus-assisted reconstruction creates NiOOH/CoOOH interfaces for efficient biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural electrooxidation

Yuwei Xiong,Chen Deng,Wei Ji,Yifei Sun,Richen Lin

Although cobalt (Co) and phosphorus (P) are widely employed to enhance the electrooxidation performance of Ni-based electrocatalysts, their synergistic roles in regulating metal-site activation and interfacial reconstruction during 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) oxidation remain unclear. Herein, by comparatively studying the electrochemical behavior and structural evolution of Ni-P/NF and Ni 0.8 Co 0.2 -P/NF during the HMF oxidation reaction (HMFOR), we identify a Co-P synergistic reconstruction mechanism that governs the dynamic formation of active interfaces. Ni 0.8 Co 0.2 -P/NF delivers a low onset potential of 1.33 V (vs. RHE) in 50 mM HMF-containing alkaline electrolyte and achieves a high current density of 900 mA cm −2 at 1.60 V (vs. RHE), with a Faradaic efficiency of 97 % toward FDCA. Mechanistic studies reveal that Co modulates the initial electronic structure of Ni sites, while P stabilizes the evolution of Co species into CoOOH under reaction conditions. The in situ generated CoOOH dynamically couples with neighboring Ni sites, thereby promoting the low-potential reconstruction of Ni 2+ into active NiOOH. In situ Raman spectroscopy further confirms the formation of a stable NiOOH/CoOOH composite active interface during HMFOR, which accounts for the reduced onset potential and accelerated reaction kinetics. This work highlights the importance of coupling static electronic modulation with dynamic electrochemical reconstruction, providing mechanistic insights for the rational design of multicomponent electrocatalysts for biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural electrooxidation.

Electrocatalytic activity sites for the oxygen evolution reaction on binary cobalt and nickel phosphides

Lin-Nan Zhou,Lan Yu,Cai Liu,Yong-Jun Li

Binary cobalt and nickel phosphides have been widely developed owing to their remarkable activities for the oxygen reduction reaction (OER) as well as their low cost. However, the OER active sites of binary cobalt and nickel phosphides are still controversial. Here, we use a CoNiP nanocage as a model catalyst and systematically investigate the correlation between the composition and the OER activity, clarifying how the ratio of CoOOH/NiOOH affects the OER activity. With the increase of the atomic ratio of Ni/Co (y/x, 0 < y/x < 3.5), the amount of NiOOH generated during the OER always increases; and the CoOOH initially increases and subsequently decreases, showing a similar changing tendency to the OER activity of CoNiP. When y/x = 1.5, CoNiP has the best OER activity with an overpotential of 278 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 and a low Tafel slope of 67 mV dec−1. All tested CoNiP catalysts show better catalytic activity than pure CoP, indicating that the catalytic activity of CoNiP should be attributed to the synergistic effect of CoOOH and NiOOH rather than exclusively to CoOOH or NiOOH. This study clarifies the origin of the catalytic activities of CoNiP, helpful for designing high-efficiency CoNiP catalysts.

Nickel Nitrate Hydroxide Holey Nanosheets for Efficient Oxygen Evolution Electrocatalysis in Alkaline Condition

He Xiong,Liu Baosheng,Zhang Shaohui,Li Hongda,Liu Jinghua,Sun Zijun,Chang Haixin

Herein, vertically aligned nickel nitrate hydroxide (NiNH) holey nanosheet arrays are controllably in situ grown on nickel foam (NF) via a facile one-step solvothermal method. Unique architecture constructed with two-dimensional (2D) holey nanosheets provides high exposure of active sites and benefits mass transport of electrolyte, which is favorable for OER electrocatalysis. Holey structure maintains through the structural conversion from NiNH to γ-NiOOH during OER activation. The vertically aligned γ-NiOOH porous nanosheet arrays exhibit tight adhesion on NF and sufficient Ni 2+ /Ni 3+ redox species, which guarantee OER activity and durable stability. Optimal OER activity with overpotential of 231 mV at 50 mA/cm 2 , a Tafel slope of 123 mV/dec and a good stability can be achieved in 1 M KOH solution, which is superior to most previous reported transition metal-based electrocatalysts. Our work can provide a facile strategy to obtain highly efficient holey OER electrocatalysts. Graphic Abstract

Unveiling the mechanism of electrocatalytic oxidation of glycerol by in-situ electrochemical spectroscopy

Lixiong Xu,Yifan Yang,Chenyue Li,Rongqian Ning,Jun Ma,Mengqin Yao,Shuo Geng,Fei Liu

The electrocatalytic glycerol oxidation reaction (GOR) is an efficient way to reduce the overpotential of the anodic reaction of electrocatalytic water splitting with abundant high-value byproducts. However, it has always been difficult to reveal a clear reaction path and real active site during the electrocatalytic glycerol oxidation reaction (GOR) process. In this work, NiOOH/Ni 3 S 2 /NF, a model catalyst was synthesized by the two-step method, and the reaction path of the electrocatalytic oxidation of glycerol on NiOOH/Ni 3 S 2 /NF was clearly unveiled by the in situ infrared and Raman analysis. In addition, the TEM after GOR and in-situ Raman intuitively demonstrated that the NiOOH was the real active site during the GOR process. Consequently, the synthesized NiOOH/Ni 3 S 2 /NF catalyst achieved a current density of 10 mA cm −2 at 1.227 V vs . RHE and obtained a high formic acid Faraday efficiency of 97.7 % at a low potential of 1.4 V vs . RHE. This work demonstrates an effective method for unveiling the GOR mechanism and the other relevant electrocatalytic reaction processes.

Mechanistic insights for dual-species evolution toward 5-hydroxymethylfurfural oxidation

Xuliang Pang,Hongye Bai,Yifei Huang,Huaiquan Zhao,Guoli Zheng,Weiqiang Fan

The biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) oxidation holds great significance for the sustainable production of value-added chemicals. However, the construction of active species with efficient oxidative-activity of alcohol/aldehyde still faces a great challenge. In this work, the reconstruction of CuO/Ni MOF successfully implanted CuOOH/NiOOH and deeply clarified their catalytic mechanism for HMF oxidation. It is worth noting that CuOOH/NiOOH exhibited an excellent self-healing ability during HMF oxidation, further realizing the reproducibility and long-term stability of catalyst. Moreover, a two-chamber electrocatalytic system combining HMF oxidation with 4-nitrophenol hydrogenation was established based on the activated CuO/Ni MOF. As a result, the overall reaction achieved a current density of 47.6 mA/cm 2 at 0.55 V vs Ag/AgCl (3.0 h), and the corresponding conversion rate and Faraday efficiency reached nearly 100 %. This study provides new insight into the electrocatalytic-reconstruction strategy to implant active species for alcohol/aldehyde oxidation.

Multiple metallic dopants in nickel nanoparticles for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution

Yan Huang,Jingrui Han,Haibin Wang,Lihua Liu,Hongyan Liang

Developing efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts is of great importance for sustainable energy conversion and storage. Ni-based catalysts have shown great potential as OER electrocatalysts, but their performance still needs to be improved. Herein, we report the multiple metal doped nickel nanoparticles synthesized via a simple oil phase strategy as efficient OER catalysts. The FeMnMoV–Ni exhibits superior OER performance with an overpotential of 220 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and a long-term stability of 250 h in 1 M KOH solution. In situ Raman analysis shows that the NiOOH site works as the active center and multiple metallic dopants facilitate the formation of NiOOH. Mo and V dopants promote the formation of high-valence state of Ni sites, and Mn dopants increase the electrochemical active surface area and expose more active sites. This work provides a novel strategy for catalyst design, which is critical for developing multiple metal doped catalysts.

Molybdenum-induced interfacial electron pump stabilizes γ-NiOOH for efficient electrooxidation conversion of methanol into formate

Ze Wang,Wenxiang Wang,Lifang Shi,Man Zhao,Wei Wen,Liwu Qiang,Shuai He,Na Gao,Qinyun Yan,He Xiao,Jianfeng Jia

A two-step strategy of electrosynthesis-solvothermal process builds NiMo/G composites with Ni-O-Mo bridges. • Mo acts as interfacial electron pump, locking Ni in high-valent state. • Electron modulation lowers γ-NiOOH formation barrier by ∼150 mV and CH 3 O →  CH 2 O step to 0.46 eV. • NiMo/G delivers 320.6 ± 5.2 mA cm −2 and 15,638.9 ± 254.1 mA mg Ni −1 , enabling low-overpotential formate pathway. The intrinsic instability of the active γ-NiOOH phase severely limits the performance of nickel-based electrocatalysts for the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). Herein, we report a Mo-induced interfacial electron pump strategy to stabilize the γ-NiOOH lattice and boost MOR efficiency. Via a distinctive two-step strategy of electrolysis and subsequent solvothermal reaction, we construct NiMo/graphene (NiMo/G) composites rich in Ni-O-Mo interfaces, where Mo centers continuously withdraw electrons from adjacent Ni sites, functioning as efficient electron sinks. This precise electronic modulation lowers the thermodynamic barrier for γ-NiOOH formation by ∼150 mV and optimizes the adsorption energetics for intermediates, reducing the energy barrier of the rate-determining *CH 3 O → *CH 2 O step from 0.68 to 0.46 eV, thereby directing the reaction along a low-overpotential formate pathway. Consequently, this optimized NiMo/G catalyst achieves exceptional area activity of 320.6 ± 5.2 mA cm −2 and mass activity of 15,638.9 ± 254.1 mA mg Ni −1 , respectively. This work establishes interfacial electron pump engineering as a general and powerful strategy for stabilizing high-valent active phases in advanced energy conversion and storage technologies. Mo-regulated NiOOH reconstruction and oxygen-intermediate conversion on Co3S4/Ni3S2 heterostructures for overall water splitting

Qi Xue,Pengjing Yin,Runmiao Chen,Juan Bai,Haoqi Yang,Yuanzhen Zhou

A self-supported Mo-doped Co 3 S 4 /Ni 3 S 2 heterostructure was constructed. • HER and OER overpotentials reach 45.6 and 51.5 mV at 10 mA cm −2 . • Operando Raman reveals earlier formation of a NiOOH-dominated active phase. • Mo suppresses excess OH ⁎ coverage and accelerates oxygen-intermediate turnover. • A symmetric electrolyzer delivers 10 mA cm −2 at a cell voltage of 1.43 V. Dynamic reconstruction of transition-metal sulfides into active oxyhydroxides is critical to the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), yet promoting this transformation at a low anodic potential while avoiding excessive accumulation of oxygenated intermediates remains challenging. Herein, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were used to reveal the electronic effect of Mo incorporation on the Co 3 S 4 /Ni 3 S 2 heterointerface, showing a downward shift of the Ni d -band center and reduced electron localization around adjacent Ni and Co sites. Based on this insight, a self-supported Mo-doped Co 3 S 4 /Ni 3 S 2 heterostructure was synthesized on nickel foam (Mo-Co 3 S 4 /Ni 3 S 2 ). The optimized Mo 0.03 -Co 3 S 4 /Ni 3 S 2 requires overpotentials of only 51.5 mV and 45.6 mV to deliver 10 mA cm −2 for OER and HER. A two-electrode electrolyzer using Mo-Co 3 S 4 /Ni 3 S 2 as both electrodes reaches 10 mA cm −2 at only 1.43 V. Methanol-probe measurements indicate reduced OH ⁎ accumulation after Mo incorporation, while in-situ Raman spectroscopy identifies the reconstructed NiOOH layer as the OER-active phase and reveals its formation at a lower anodic potential. Further calculations show that Mo brings hydrogen adsorption closer to thermoneutral and lowers the thermodynamic limitation of OER by regulating oxygenated-intermediate adsorption. This work provides a general strategy for regulating dynamic catalyst reconstruction and interfacial reaction processes, which may advance the development of efficient electrocatalysts for sustainable hydrogen production. Codecoration of Phosphate and Iron for Improving Oxygen Evolution Reaction of Layered Ni(OH)2/NiOOH

Yuexiang Li,Junliang Liu,Shuqi Li,Shaoqin Peng

Hydrogen production through electrochemical water splitting (EWS) presents a viable solution for addressing the fossil energy crisis. However, the commercial viability of this approach is impeded by the sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). It is urgently needed to develop efficient, stable, and cost-effective OER electrocatalysts. Herein, we comprehensively design and investigate a phosphate ion and Fe3+ codecorating Ni(OH)2/NiOOH electrocatalyst (Pi-Fe:NiOH) for OER. This codecoration induces multiple synergistic effects, which include an increase in the interlayer water content for the internal OER, altering the OER mechanism, facilitating proton transport across the layers, and improving the stability of Pi-Fe:NiOH. Consequently, Pi-Fe:NiOH exhibits a high OER activity with overpotentials of 118 ± 1 and 222 ± 4 mV at current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm–2, respectively. More impressively, it maintains stable operation at a high current density of around 300 mA cm–2 for at least 500 h, much better than the Ni(OH)2/NiOOH electrocatalyst (NiOH) for less than 6 h at a current density below 200 mA cm–2. These findings offer insights for the design of anion–cation codoped hydroxide eletrocatalysts, paving a way for the development of efficient and stable OER electrocatalysts.

Li Hong Qian,Xiao Cai Liang,Hua lan Zhou

The Ni(OH) 2 /NiOOH nanoparticles (NPs) electrodeposited on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) in Ni(NO 3 ) 2 and NH 3 ·H 2 O aqueous solution for the electrode materials. Then the nickel hydroxide/oxyhydroxide acetate was formed in acetate solution. The effects of deposition conditions such as the concentration of Ni(NO 3 ) 2 solution, the number of sedimentary cycles, the concentration of acetate in the soaking liquid and the soaking time are discussed in detail. The electrochemical properties of the material have been investigated by cyclic voltammetry, Tafel curve, EIS and amperometric i–t curve techniques. The result displays excellent electrocatalytic activity towards the electrocatalytic oxidation of urea in alkaline solution. Furthermore, the modified electrode for oxidation reaction has the advantages of simple preparation, good electrochemical properties and stabilisation.

Reconstruction of Fe-doped Ni3S2 into NiOOH enabled by low Ru for high-rate alkaline oxygen evolution

Guilian Li,Jintong Guo,Daming Yang,Hongji Xu,Linglong Hu,Shuo Geng,Ming Feng

Sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics impede alkaline electrolysis. Here, vertically aligned Ru-decorated, Fe-doped Ni 3 S 2 nanowire arrays on Ni foam (Ru-NFS) are synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal route. Distinct from conventional Ni 3 S 2 →NiOOH systems, we operate in a low-Ru, Fe-co-modulated regime where Ru remains S-ligated and highly dispersed, evidenced by the absence of Ru-Ru scattering in EXAFS. This coordination accelerates NiOOH formation, enhances charge transfer, and mitigates Ru loss, yielding Ru-normalized activity beyond single-modulated controls. In 1.0   M KOH (iR-corrected), Ru-NFS requires only 206 and 245   mV to reach 10 and 100   mA   cm -2 , respectively, and sustains stable operation. Mechanistically, COHP analysis shows that Fe substitution and, more strongly, Ru incorporation progressively weaken Ni-S bonds in the precursor, enabling rapid anodic reconstruction to NiOOH. On the reconstructed surface, DOS/PDOS reveal a d-manifold shifted toward EF with increased states, implying higher hole availability and optimized M-O covalency for coupled proton-electron transfer. DFT-CHE at 1.23   V (RHE) identifies *O→*OOH as the thermodynamic RDS, with ΔG reduced from 0.70   eV (NiOOH) to 0.48   eV (Fe-NiOOH) and 0.38   eV (Ru,Fe-NiOOH). Overall, Ru-Fe co-modulation couples reconstruction control with adsorbate-binding optimization, providing a blueprint for robust high-rate OER anodes.
