Fluorinated Interlayer Modulation of NiOx-Based Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells

Hui Li,Abdulaziz S. R. Bati,Ronan Chu,Guanran Zhang,Yanyan Li,Qianqian Lin,Paul L. Burn,Paul E. Shaw,Ian R. Gentle

p-Type inorganic nickel oxide (NiOx) exhibits high transparency, tunable-optoelectronic properties, and a work function (WF) that is potentially suitable for hole extraction in inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, NiOx films possess surface defects that lead to high interfacial recombination and an energy offset with the ionization potential of the perovskite. Herein, we show that fluorinated 3-(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorophenyl)propan-1-aminium iodide (FPAI) can be used to modify the electronic properties of the NiOx anode interlayer. The FPAI modification led to good perovskite crystal growth and films with reduced surface defects. The FPAI modification also increased the WF of NiOx and improved charge extraction. These improvements led to an increased Voc value compared with control devices without FPAI modification, 1.05 V versus 1.00 V, and a higher short-circuit current and larger fill factor. As a result, the best PSCs with FPAI-modified NiOx had a power conversion efficiency of 19.3%. Finally, the PSCs with the FPAI-modified NiOx layer were found to have improved stability.

Light-driven assembly of Pt clusters on Mo-NiOx nanosheets to achieve Pt/Mo-NiOx hybrid with dense heterointerfaces and optimized charge redistribution for alkaline hydrogen evolution

Wei Liu,Yaxuan Li,Yuanxin Dou,Nuo Xu,Jiajia Wang,Jiangtao Xu,Chuanming Li,Jingquan Liu

Designing cost-effective alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts with high water dissociation ability, enhanced hydroxyl transfer rate and optimized hydrogen adsorption free energy (ΔG H* ) by a time and energy efficient strategy is pivotal, but still challenging for alkaline water electrolysis. Herein, Pt/Mo-NiO x hybrid consisting of Pt clusters assembled on Mo-doped NiO x nanosheet arrays is prepared on the surface of raw NiMo foam (NMF) by a light-driven strategy to address this challenge. Benefitting from the electronic interaction between Mo-NiO x and Pt, the Pt/Mo-NiO x composite owns optimized ΔG H* and is beneficial for accelerating water dissociation and hydroxyl transfer. As a result, the optimized Pt/Mo-NiO x /NMF electrode displays an exceptional alkaline HER activity with a low overpotential of 62 mV to obtain 100 mA cm −2 and a high Pt mass activity (13.2 times as high as that of commercial 20 wt% Pt/C). Furthermore, the assembled two-electrode cell of Pt/Mo-NiO x /NMF||NiFe-LDH/NF requires a voltage of only 1.549 V to deliver 100 mA cm −2 , along with negligible activity decay after 70 h stability test. The present study provides a promising strategy for exploiting high-performance electrocatalysts towards alkaline HER.

Rigid molecules anchoring on NiOx enable >26% efficiency perovskite solar cells

Deng Wang,Zhixin Liu,Ying Qiao,Zhengyan Jiang,Peide Zhu,Jie Zeng,Wenbo Peng,Qing Lian,Geping Qu,Yintai Xu,Yong Zhang,Fengzhu Li,Lei Yan,Xingzhu Wang,Yang-Gang Wang,Alex K.-Y. Jen,Baomin Xu

The surface defects of nickel oxide (NiO x ) and its interfacial redox reactions with perovskites often impede the efficiency improvement of inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs). To address these issues, we designed ((9H-fluoren-9-ylidene)methyl) cyanophosphonic acid (FY-CPA) with a rigid backbone as an optimal multi-dentate anchoring (MDA) molecule to enhance the anchorage with bottom NiO x by forming tetradentate binding and parallel orientation. Dense and uniform coverage of FY-CPA at the NiO x /perovskite interface was achieved through in situ deposition, which can minimize interfacial redox reactions and suppress non-radiative recombination. The champion device demonstrated a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 26.21% with a certified value of 25.99%. In addition, the larger area device (1.02 cm 2 ) also showed a PCE of 25.31% with a certified value of 24.90%, which is among the highest PCEs reported so far for greater than 1 cm 2 sized PSCs. Moreover, the as-prepared device exhibited enhanced thermal and operational stability during long-term storage.

Highly Improved Efficiency and Stability of 2D Perovskite Solar Cells via Bifunctional Inorganic Salt KPF6 Modified NiO x Hole Transport Layer

Hongming Hou,Taotao Hu,Zetan Zhang,Chang Liu,Qiaofeng Wu,Jin Peng,Jiajun Long,Meng Zhang,Hua Yu

In general, improving the electrical conductivity of bare NiO x film and alleviating the undesired energy level mismatch by interface engineering are operative to enhance the property of 2D perovskite solar cells (2D PSCs) based on NiO x . Herein, the NiO x /2D perovskite interface is modified by inorganic salt KPF 6 to improve the interfacial contact and conductivity of NiO x . It is revealed that KPF 6 not only improves the conductivity of NiO x through the formation of Ni  F coordination bond with NiO x by PF 6 - but also promotes the energy level matching between NiO x and the 2D perovskite layer. Thus, KPF 6 -modified NiO x greatly enhances the extraction ability of hole carriers in 2D perovskite layers and improves the crystallinity of 2D perovskite films. Accordingly, the NiO x /KPF 6 -based 2D PSCs attain an optimal power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 14.34%. Meanwhile, the KPF 6 modified device without sealed maintains 93% of its original PCE for 600 h on a 60 °C hot plate filled with nitrogen and 72% after aging for 600 h with a humidity of 35 ± 10% in the atmosphere, respectively. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of using inorganic salts to modify NiO x hole transport layers to augment the optoelectronic properties and stability of 2D PSCs.

Blade-Coated Carbon Electrode Perovskite Solar Cells to Exceed 20% Efficiency Through Protective Buffer Layers

Yaqing Li,Xiayao Lu,Yantao Mei,Chen Dong,Deepak Thrithamarassery Gangadharan,Kong Liu,Zhijie Wang,Shengchun Qu,Makhsud I. Saidaminov,Weifeng Zhang,Furui Tan

Perovskite solar cells with carbon electrode have a commercial impact because of their facile scalability, low-cost, and stability. In these devices, it remains a challenge to design an efficient hole transport layer (HTL) for robust interfacing with perovskite on one side and carbon on another. Herein, an organic/inorganic double planar HTL is constructed based on polythiophene (P3HT) and nickel oxide (NiOx) nanoparticles to address the named challenge. Through adding an alkyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) modified NiOx nanoparticle layer on P3HT, the planar HTL achieves a cascade type-II energy level alignment at the perovskite/HTL interfaces and a preferential ohmic contact at NiOx/carbon electrode, which greatly benefits in charge collection while suppressing charge transfer recombination. Besides, compared with the single P3HT layer, the planar composite enables a robust interfacial contact by protecting perovskite from being corroded by carbon paste during fabrication. As a result, the blade-coated FA 0.6 MA 0.4 PbI 3 perovskite solar cells (fabricated in ambient air in fume hood) with carbon electrode deliver an efficiency of 20.14%, the highest value for bladed coated carbon and perovskite solar cells, and withstand 275 h maximum power point tracking in air without encapsulation (95% efficiency retained).

Low-temperature solution-processed NiOx films for air-stable perovskite solar cells

Jie Cao,Hui Yu,Shuang Zhou,Minchao Qin,Tsz-Ki Lau,Xinhui Lu,Ni Zhao,Ching-Ping Wong

The use of organic hole transporting layers (HTLs) in organolead halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) often limits the air and thermal stability of the devices. In this work, we developed a low-temperature solution process that enables the fabrication of nickel oxide (NiOx) based HTLs on top of perovskite active layers. The NiOx film exhibits a uniform and dense morphology, rendering the PSCs air-stable and thermally stable. We further found that by introducing an interfacial layer (e.g. CuSCN) between the NiOx film and the top metal electrode, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the PSCs can be largely improved from 10.4% to 17.2%, while the air stability continues to be excellent. The role of the interfacial layer was investigated through impedance analysis and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy. Remarkably, the PSCs with the NiOx/CuSCN hybrid inorganic HTL exhibit no degradation in their PCE after being exposed to ambient air (humidity level: 50–60%) for 4 months without encapsulation.

Dual Surface Modifications of NiOx/Perovskite Interface for Enhancement of Device Stability

Jingyang Lin,Yantao Wang,Abdul Khaleed,Ali Asgher Syed,Yanling He,Christopher C. S. Chan,Yin Li,Kuan Liu,Gang Li,Kam Sing Wong,Jasminka Popović,Jing Fan,Alan Man Ching Ng,Aleksandra B. Djurišić

Various phosphonic acid based self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) have been commonly used for interface modifications in inverted perovskite solar cells. This typically results in significant enhancement of the hole extraction and consequent increase in the power conversion efficiency. However, the surface coverage and packing density of SAM molecules can vary, depending on the chosen SAM material and underlying oxide layer. In addition, different SAM molecules have diverse effects on the interfacial energy level alignment and perovskite film growth, resulting in complex relationships between surface modification, efficiency, and lifetime. Here we show that ethanolamine surface modification combined with [2-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)ethyl]phosphonic acid (2PACz) results in significant improvement in device stability compared to devices with 2PACz modification only. The significantly smaller size of ethanolamine enables it to fill any gaps in 2PACz coverage and provide improved interfacial defect passivation, while its different chemical structure enables it to provide complementary effects to 2PACz passivation. Consequently, the perovskite films are more stable under illumination (slower photoinduced segregation), and the devices exhibit significant stability enhancement. Despite similar power conversion efficiencies (PCE) between 2PACz only and combined ethanolamine-2PACz modification (PCE of champion devices ∼21.6–22.0% for rigid and ∼20.2–21.0% for flexible devices), the T80 lifetime under simulated solar illumination in ambient is improved more than 15 times for both rigid and flexible devices.

Dominating Role of Ni0 on the Interface of Ni/NiO for Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Jing Wang,Shanjun Mao,Zeyan Liu,Zhongzhe Wei,Haiyan Wang,Yiqing Chen,Yong Wang

The research of a robust catalytic system based on single NiOx electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) remains a huge challenge. Particularly, the factors that dominate the catalytic properties of NiOx-based hybrids for HER have not been clearly demonstrated. Herein, a convenient protocol for the fabrication of NiOx@bamboo-like carbon nanotube hybrids (NiOx@BCNTs) is designed. The hybrids exhibit superb catalytic ability and considerable durability in alkaline solution. A benchmark HER current density of 10 mA cm–2 has been achieved at an overpotential of ∼79 mV. In combination with the experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, this for the first time definitely validates that the inherent high Ni0 ratio and the Ni0 on the interface of Ni/NiO play a vital role in the outstanding catalytic performance. Especially, the Ni0 on the interface of Ni/NiO performs superior activity for water splitting compared with that of bulk Ni0. These conclusions provide guidance for the rational design of the future non-noble metallic catalysts.

A regulation strategy of self-assembly molecules for achieving efficient inverted perovskite solar cells

Pu-An Lin,Bo Yang,Changqing Lin,Zhenghui Fan,Yu Chen,Wenfeng Zhang,Bing Cai,Jie Sun,Xiaojia Zheng,Wen-Hua Zhang

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) have been successfully employed to enhance the efficiency of inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs) and perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells due to their facile low-temperature processing and superior device performance. Nevertheless, depositing uniform and dense SAMs with high surface coverage on metal oxide substrates remains a critical challenge. In this work, we propose a holistic strategy to construct composite hole transport layers (HTLs) by co-adsorbing mixed SAMs (MeO-2PACz and 2PACz) onto the surface of the H2O2-modified NiOx layer. The results demonstrate that the conductivity of the NiOx bulk phase is enhanced due to the H2O2 modification, thereby facilitating carrier transport. Furthermore, the hydroxyl-rich NiOx surface promotes uniform and dense adsorption of mixed SAM molecules while enhancing their anchoring stability. In addition, the energy level alignment at the interface is improved due to the utilization of mixed SAMs in an optimized ratio. Furthermore, the perovskite film crystal growth is facilitated by the uniform and dense composite HTLs. As a result, the power conversion efficiency of PSCs based on composite HTLs is boosted from 22.26% to 23.16%, along with enhanced operational stability. This work highlights the importance of designing and constructing NiOx/SAM composite HTLs as an effective strategy for enhancing both the performance and stability of inverted PSCs.

High Efficiency Inverted Planar Perovskite Solar Cells with Solution-Processed NiOx Hole Contact

Xuewen Yin,Zhibo Yao,Qiang Luo,Xuezeng Dai,Yu Zhou,Ye Zhang,Yangying Zhou,Songping Luo,Jianbao Li,Ning Wang,Hong Lin

NiOx is a promising hole-transporting material for perovskite solar cells due to its high hole mobility, good stability, and easy processability. In this work, we employed a simple solution-processed NiOx film as the hole-transporting layer in perovskite solar cells. When the thickness of the perovskite layer increased from 270 to 380 nm, the light absorption and photogenerated carrier density were enhanced and the transporting distance of electron and hole would also increase at the same time, resulting in a large charge transfer resistance and a long hole-extracted process in the device, characterized by the UV–vis, photoluminescence, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy spectra. Combining both of these factors, an optimal thickness of 334.2 nm was prepared with the perovskite precursor concentration of 1.35 M. Moreover, the optimal device fabrication conditions were further achieved by optimizing the thickness of NiOx hole-transporting layer and PCBM electron selective layer. As a result, the best power conversion efficiency of 15.71% was obtained with a Jsc of 20.51 mA·cm–2, a Voc of 988 mV, and a FF of 77.51% with almost no hysteresis. A stable efficiency of 15.10% was caught at the maximum power point. This work provides a promising route to achieve higher efficiency perovskite solar cells based on NiO or other inorganic hole-transporting materials.

Hierarchical NiOx nanotube arrays/CoP nanosheets heterostructure enables robust alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction

Shi Feng Zai,Yu Han Wu,Yi Tong Zhou,Zhao Tian Hui Li,Chun Bin Guo

Rational design of low-cost and high-efficiency electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is critical for scalable and sustainable hydrogen production from economical water-alkali splitting. Herein, density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that coupling NiO x and CoP could effectively boost overall HER kinetics through lowing the H 2 O dissociation barrier, accelerating the OH* transfer process, and providing the rapid H* migration kinetics as well as the appropriate H* energetics. Based on these findings, we successfully prepared a three-dimensional (3D) self-supported electrode of ultrathin CoP nanosheets directly grown on the surface-oxidized Ni nanotube arrays via a simple and scalable electrochemical synthesis method. As expected, such a heterostructure electrode exhibits superior alkaline HER performance with low overpotentials of 51 and 164 mV to drive the current densities of 10 and 500 mA cm −2 , respectively, outperforming most of the efficient alkaline HER electrocatalysts.

NiOx-promoted Cu-based catalysts supported on AlSBA-15 for chemoselective hydrogenation of nitroarenes

Xiuli Li,Yuan Tan,Zongyang Liu,Juan Su,Yan Xiao,Botao Qiao,Yunjie Ding

Chemoselective hydrogenation of aromatic nitro compounds to the corresponding anilines is an environmentally benign technology for the production of key intermediates in manufacturing of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, dyes and fine chemicals. Non-noble metal Cu-based catalysts have been reported as a low-cost alternative but suffer from poor activity. Herein, by fabricating nickel oxide promoted Cu catalysts, a promoted activity was obtained in supported Cu-Ni bimetal catalyst system. Characterizations such as H 2 -TPR and XPS indicate a strong interaction between Cu and Ni, which contributes to its high activity and selectivity in hydrogenation of p -chloronitrobenzene ( p -CNB) to p -chloroaniline ( p -CAN). Control experiments suggest that either monometallic copper or pure nickel oxide is less active for the reaction but the interaction of NiO x with Cu generates much more active species, resulting in significantly improved catalytic reactivity and selectivity. The activity was found to be highly dependent on the contents of Cu 0 & Cu + in Cu-Ni bimetal catalyst, as the specific reaction rates for hydrogenation of p -CNB grew linearly with the increment of Cu 0 & Cu + loadings. Kinetic studies and in-situ DRIFTS of p -CNB imply the 10Cu-5Ni/AlSBA-R catalyst possesses good capacity for the activation of hydrogen and nitro group, leading to high p -CNB conversion and p -CAN production. The present work provides a good example for understanding the interaction between Cu and nickel oxides, and helps to develop highly efficient non-noble metal catalysts for selective hydrogenation of aromatic nitro compounds to corresponding anilines.
