We report herein the first interfacial synthesis of photoluminescent NiSe QDs and their evolution towards excitation-dependent multicolour hybrid QDs after solvothermal treatment. We demonstrate that tri-n-octylphosphine (TOP), a very commonly used ligand for the synthesis of QDs, would pyrolyze and generate fluorescent carbon dots (CDs), which is responsible for the asymmetrical and bimodal emission of QDs but has been neglected before. Also described is the application of these QDs for multicolour fluorescent patterns with high uniformity.

Electrochemical water splitting is a promising approach for sustainable hydrogen production, but the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remains a bottleneck due to sluggish kinetics, poor activity, and limited stability and scalability. Here, a Mo 2 N-functionalized nickel is designed foam (NF@Mo 2 N) and subsequently transform into a Mo 2 N/NiSe/Ni 2 P multi-phase heterostructure through selenization and phosphorization, to address these challenges. The optimized NF@Mo 2 N/NiSe/Ni 2 P catalyst integrates three key strategies: (I) functionalizing NF with Mo 2 N to enhance conductivity and charge transfer, (II) engineering a collaborative multi-interface heterostructure to optimize active sites and reaction kinetics, and (III) precisely controlling phase formation through selenization and phosphorization to mitigate surface reconstruction and ensure long-term stability. The catalyst not only achieves an overpotential of 242 mV@10 mA cm −2 and remarkable stability over 350 h, but also achieves a low overpotential of 395 mV at a high current density of 800 mA cm −2 , outperforming the pristine other control samples. Theoretical analysis reveals that the Mo 2 N-stabilized NiSe/Ni 2 P heterostructure on NF enhances conductivity and optimizes adsorption energies of OER intermediates, leading to improved catalytic performance and stability. This work provides a new strategy for designing high-performance, non-precious metal OER catalysts for industrial applications and advancing sustainable hydrogen production.

Phase engineering of transition metal chalcogenides is a promising strategy for optimizing catalytic performance. In this work, we investigate the phase-dependent catalytic properties of NiSe. Using density functional theory (DFT) and Variable-cell nudged elastic band technique, we reveal a metastable intermediate phase (MIS-2′) within the confinement the of interface on the transition path from hexagonal (H–NiSe) to rhombohedral (R–NiSe) structures. Gibbs free energy calculations show that the MIS-2′ phase has superior hydrogen adsorption (ΔG H ∗ = −0.02 eV) compared to H–NiSe and R–NiSe. NiSe catalysts with different phases were synthesized by hydrothermal methods, and electrochemical tests in 1 M KOH show that the sample containing both MIS-2′ and R–NiSe prepared at 150 °C, delivers the best HER performance (η 10 = 105.08 mV, Tafel slope = 121.12 mV dec −1 ). This improvement is attributed to the synergistic effects of the two phases, especially the involvement of MIS. These findings highlight the potential of phase engineering to enhance catalytic activity and offer a new pathway for optimizing transition-metal chalcogenides based electrocatalysts for sustainable energy applications.

The slow kinetics of the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) impose a major limitation on overall water electrolysis, creating a demand for highly active catalysts. Transition metal selenides (TMSs) offer favorable electrical conductivity, inexpensive constituents, and adjustable electronic configurations; however, their inherent catalytic activity is still insufficient. In this study, nanorod-like Fe/Co co-doped NiSe (Fe,Co-NiSe) was prepared by hydrothermally forming NiSe and subsequently introducing Fe and Co through a simple soaking treatment. The simultaneous incorporation of Fe and Co effectively tunes the electronic structure of NiSe. Raman measurements performed in situ show that introducing Fe/Co favors the generation of NiOOH-type oxyhydroxide species, thereby enhancing OER activity. 18O-labeling differential electrochemical mass spectrometry confirms that Fe,Co-NiSe follows the conventional adsorbate evolution mechanism. Density functional theory (DFT) analysis further indicates that Fe-induced electronic redistribution at Co sites raises the Co d-band position and reduces the Gibbs energy required for the kinetically limiting *O → *OOH conversion. Consequently, under alkaline conditions, Fe,Co-NiSe reaches 10 mA cm-2 at an overpotential of 229 mV and sustains 50 mA cm-2 for 300 h. When employed as the anodic electrode in an anion exchange membrane (AEM) water electrolyzer coupled with Pt/C, this electrolyzer delivers 1 A cm-2 while registering a cell voltage of 1.84 V.

Developing highly efficient and durable non-precious bifunctional electrocatalysts is essential for reducing the industrial cost of electrocatalytic water splitting. Herein, an ordered nanodendritic NiSe-NiS catalyst (NiSe-NiS/NFF) is constructed by stepwise electrodeposition, where interfacial reactions convert the amorphous precursor into nanocrystalline Ni 3 SeS as the dominant crystalline phase. Such a three-dimensional dendritic architecture offers a high density of electrochemically accessible active sites, continuous pathways for electron transport, and open channels that facilitate electrolyte penetration and gas release. Consequently, NiSe-NiS/NFF requires overpotentials of 65 mV for HER and 228 mV for OER to reach 10 mA·cm −2 . For comparison, NiSe/NFF requires 83 mV for HER and 241 mV for OER, whereas NiS/NFF shows a similar HER overpotential of 60 mV but a much higher OER overpotential of 255 mV, highlighting the overall performance gain achieved by the stepwise design. Moreover, the low Tafel slopes of NiSe-NiS/NFF, 39.0 mV·dec −1 for HER and 56.6 mV·dec −1 for OER, further confirm the accelerated reaction kinetics. In a two-electrode configuration, NiSe-NiS/NFF delivers 10 mA·cm −2 at 1.53 V and maintains 96.5 % current retention over 48 h; for OER, it retains 85.8 % of the initial current density after 100 h at 100 mA·cm −2 . Under OER conditions, electrochemically driven surface reconstruction promotes the conversion of Ni 2+ to Ni 3+ , adjusts the sulfide-related S environment, and generates more NiOOH active species, thereby optimizing charge transfer and enhancing electrocatalytic activity. This study shows that stepwise electrodeposition tailors electronic states and surface reconstruction, enabling bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting.

Graphical NiSe and easy does it : Porous ultrathin NiSe nanosheet networks (NiSe NNs) on nickel foam fabricated by selenylation/pickling of Mn-doped α-Ni(OH) 2 afford electrodes with high ion mobility, abundant activated sites, and low resistance. The NiSe NNs electrodes had an ultrahigh capacity of 443 mA h g −1 (807 μAh cm −1 ) at 3.0 A g −1 . The assembled hybrid supercapacitor had a high energy density of 66.6 Wh kg −1 with excellent cycling stability. Transition metal selenides (TMSs) with excellent electrochemical activity and high intrinsic electrical conductivity have attracted considerable attention owing to their potential use in energy storage devices. However, the low energy densities of the reported TMSs, which originate from the small active surface area and poor electrolyte ion mobility, substantially restrict their application potential. In this work, porous ultrathin nickel selenide nanosheet networks (NiSe NNs) on nickel foam are fabricated by using a novel, facile method, that is, selenylation/pickling of the pre-formed manganese-doped α-Ni(OH) 2 . Removal of Mn resulted in NNs with a highly porous structure. The 3D framework of the NNs and the inherent nature of the NiSe affords high ion mobility, abundant accessible activated sites, vigorous electrochemical activity, and low resistance. One of the highest specific capacities of TMSs ever reported, that is, 443 mA h g −1 (807 μAh cm −2 ) at 3.0 A g −1 , is achieved with the NNs as electrodes. The assembled NiSe NNs//porous carbon hybrid supercapacitor delivers a high energy density of 66.6 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 425 W kg −1 , with excellent cycling stability. This work provides a new strategy for the production of novel electrode materials that can be applied in high-performance hybrid supercapacitors, and a fresh pathway towards commercial applications of hybrid supercapacitors based on TMS electrodes.

Efficient and durable bifunctional electrocatalysts are crucial for water splitting, however, optimizing their electronic structures remains a significant challenge. In this study, a self-supported electrocatalyst (NiSe-NiP@NF) with a crystalline-amorphous coupled heterostructure was synthesized via stepwise electrodeposition. The crystalline NiSe phase enhances electron transport owing to its high conductivity and metallic properties, which facilitate efficient charge transfer during catalysis. Moreover, it facilitates water dissociation by providing a conductive pathway. The amorphous NiP phase, abundant in active sites, accelerates the adsorption and conversion of reaction intermediates (e.g., *OH and *OOH) during the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The synergy between the crystalline and amorphous phases enhances the overall electrochemical performance. NiSe-NiP@NF exhibits overpotentials of 265 mV for OER and 106 mV for HER at 10 mA·cm⁻ 2 , demonstrating excellent stability (99.2 % retention after 70 hours at 15 mA·cm⁻ 2 ). These findings emphasize the critical role of crystalline-amorphous coupling in enhancing electrocatalytic performance for efficient energy conversion.

Rechargeable aluminum-ion batteries (AIBs) are promising candidates for energy storage because of their low cost, high safety, and high-power density owing to the three-electron redox reaction . However, the applications of AIBs are hindered by their limited lifetime and practically achievable energy density . Herein, we present a novel Fe-doped Nickel selenide (Fe-NiSe) nanoflake cathode material , derived from a Ni–Fe layered double hydroxide , affording a long cycle life and high energy density . Synergism between the ultrafine nanostructure and Fe doping provided shorter ion diffusion pathways and created multiple active sites in the cathode. As a result, the prepared Fe–NiSe battery achieved an outstanding energy density of 402.5 W h kg −1 and an ultra-long lifespan of 13,500 cycles with a capacity decay of only 0.0026% per cycle. Furthermore, based on the mass of the entire pouch-type cell, the fabricated AIB delivered an energy density of 101.2 W h kg −1 . This work paves the way for serviceable high-energy density AIBs.

Oxidizing glycerol to produce formate as a substitute for the traditional slow anodic oxygen evolution reaction is an effective strategy to enhance hydrogen production efficiency and reduce associated costs. However, the development of efficient and stable catalysts remains a significant challenge for the glycerol oxidation reaction coupled with water electrolysis. In this study, we synthesized molybdenum-doped Ni 3 Se 2 /NiSe nanomaterials supported on nickel foam using a straightforward one-step hydrothermal method. In a 1 M KOH solution, the Mo 0.2 catalyst exhibited exceptional electrocatalytic oxidation performance. Specifically, during the glycerol oxidation process, it achieved a current density of 10 mA cm −2 at a remarkably low potential of 1.20 V (vs. RHE) and demonstrated good electrochemical stability at a current density of 50 mA cm −2 . Studies indicate that the incorporation of molybdenum atoms modifies the chemical environment of nickel and selenium atoms, which not only enhances the electrocatalytic activity of the catalyst but also improves the stability of the material itself. Additionally, it facilitates the catalytic oxidation of glycerol at the anode while concurrently promoting hydrogen evolution at the cathode, resulting in the efficient simultaneous production of hydrogen and formate.

Developing highly active and stably non-precious metal electrocatalysts for hydrogen production in alkaline conditions is of paramount importance to hydrogen economy. Herein, nanosheet-assembled hollow nitrogen-doped carbon nanospheres confined with ultrasmall NiSe nanoparticles (NiSe@NC) are synthesized by employing a SiO 2 template-assisted approach. As expected, the as-prepared NiSe@NC electrocatalyst delivers an overpotential of 169 mV at the current density of 10 mA/cm 2 without iR -correction, and sustains at least 80 h for continuous operation, far outperforming the NiSe-p catalyst in 1 M KOH medium toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The appealing HER performance is mainly ascribed to the synergy effect between hollow nitrogen-doped carbon and highly active NiSe nanoparticles, which improves catalytically active sites, expedites electron transfer rate and optimizes the electronic structure of NiSe@NC nanomaterial. More strikingly, this study presents the feasible insights for constructing robust cost-effective electrocatalysts towards efficient HER in harsh alkaline media.

Decreasing energy consumption of water splitting strategy by replacing oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with more facile sulfide oxidation reaction (SOR) to H 2 evolution and value-added sulfur products is a promising technology. Nevertheless, the unsatisfactory catalyst long-term stability and passivation issues substantially limit the overall productivity. Herein, we report an anti-sulfuretted NiSe nanowire array catalyst on nickel foam (NiSe/NF), this catalyst exhibits a significantly reduced anode potential of 0.49 V vs. RHE at 100 mA cm −2 compared to the oxygen evolution reaction (1.78 V vs. RHE) and remains admirable stability for more than 500 h without passivation. Particularly, the skillful combination of UV–vis, in situ Raman, and attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectra, we reveal that S 2- /HS - has been selectively converted to S n 2- and by-product S 2 O 3 2- rather than sulfur, which avoids long-perplexing passivation issue of solid sulfur. For the first time, we demonstrate the feasibility of the system (SOR + HER) in a commercial membrane electrode assembly stack, which affords 19.0 mL min −1 H 2 at a low cell voltage of 1.0 V with consuming the electricity of 2.63 kWh Nm −3 H 2 . This work provides a new avenue for low-cost H 2 production by H 2 S electrooxidation desulfurization.
