The metal–nitrogen–carbon (M–N–C)-based catalysts are promising to replace PGM (platinum group metal) to accelerate oxygen reduction reaction due to their excellent electrocatalytic performance. However, the inferior intrinsic activity and poor active site density confining further improvement in their performance. Modulating the electronic structure and reasonably designing the pore structure are widely acknowledged effective strategies to boost the activity of the M–N–C catalysts. However, it is a great challenge to form abundant pores to regulate the electronic structure via the facile method. Herein, a hierarchical, porous dual-atom catalyst FeNi-NPC-1000 has been architectured by the Na2CO3 template method and bimetallic doping modification strategy. Benefitting from the optimized pore and electronic structure, the as-prepared FeNi-NPC-1000 possesses a high specific surface area (1412.8 m2 g–1) and improved ORR activity (E1/2 = 0.877 V vs RHE), which is superior to that of Pt/C (E1/2 = 0.867 V vs RHE). With the evidence of AC-STEM, XAS, and DFT, the FeNi-N8-C moiety is proven to be the key active site to realize high-efficiency ORR catalysis. When assembled it as an air cathode of ZABs, FeNi-NPC-1000 displays superior discharge performance (Pmax = 367.1 mW cm–2) and a stable battery long-life. This article will provide a new strategy for designing dual-metal atomic catalysts applied in metal–air batteries.

Pt-based nanocatalysts supported on carbon materials have exhibited remarkable catalytic activity in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, these catalysts still encounter challenges such as low utilization efficiency, weak binding strength with substrate and proneness to detachment from it. Consequently, we explore the potential application of electron-rich polymer as carrier in high efficiency ORR catalysts, the uniformly distributed Pt-PANI catalyst is successfully synthesized by taking advantage of ion-exchange property of polyaniline (PANI). As an emerging catalyst for ORR, Pt-PANI shows excellent ORR performance in acidic solution, the vertically aligned PANI nanoarrays accelerate the ion diffusion in electrolyte and promote the charge transfer at the interface, improving the catalytic activity of low-loading Pt-based catalyst. In short, this work provides a novel alternative beyond conventional carbonaceous materials for the selection of carriers for Pt-based catalyst.

Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is an important reaction process that occurs at the cathode of zinc-air batteries. An efficient reaction process is conducive to further research on sustainable energy devices. In order to improve the reaction speed, the ORR electrocatalyst containing uniform Fe–N-C sites in a porous carbon network similar to the shape of moth-eaten rotten wood was prepared using water hyacinth with a thin-layer structure inside as a template. Water hyacinth, plays a variety of synthetic functions in the construction of nanocatalysts, not only has a good enrichment effect on metal elements, but also is rich in N element. The doped Fe elements combine with the carbon and N elements of water hyacinth to form Fe–N-C active sites. The half-wave potential of SHL-Fe-HMNC is raised to 0.881 V (0.838 V for commercial 20wt% Pt/C) compared to the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). The power density of the liquid battery prepared based on SHL-Fe-HMNC reaches 110 mW·cm −2 (90 mW·cm −2 for 20 wt% Pt/C). Furthermore, the cycle time of ZABs exceeds 200 h. The flexible battery based on SHL-Fe-HMNC has a cycle stability of more than 10 h at a current of 10 mA·cm −2 , and the open circuit voltage (OCV) reaches 1.511 V. Graphical Abstract

Efficient and durable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) bifunctional electrocatalysts are critical for the development of zinc-air battery (ZAB). Unfortunately, conventional commercial catalysts usually display selective activity in only one reaction and cannot efficiently catalyze the two reactions at the same time. In this paper, porous carbon nanosheets loaded Co 4 N (Co 4 N/PNC) were prepared by pyrolysis of SiO 2 @ZnCo-ZIF. Due to the hierarchical pore structure, large specific surface area, abundant active sites, excellent electron transfer and mass transmission, the Co 4 N/PNC obtained at 920 °C (Co 4 N/PNC-920) exhibited outstanding ORR and OER catalytic activities. Furthermore, the assembled Co 4 N/PNC-920-based rechargeable ZAB displayed a discharge power density of 170.7 mW·cm −2 , a specific capacity of 801.1 mA·hg −1 and an excellent durability, implying that Co 4 N/PNC-920 could be utilized as a bifunctional and highly active catalyst in ZABs.

The development of platinum group metal (PGM)-free catalysts is essential to advance the wide application of fuel cells. Single-atom Fe─N─C catalysts are one type of promising PGM-free catalysts that can replace the expensive Pt/C catalyst for the electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction. However, Fe─N─C catalysts still suffer from poor stability due to the inevitable Fenton reaction. In this work, a doping strategy is demonstrated to alter the electronic structure around the catalytic sites and significantly improve their catalytic activity. In particular, the phosphorous-doped Fe─N─C catalyst (P─Fe─N─C) achieves a half-wave potential of 0.885 V versus RHE in 0.1 m KOH and demonstrates excellent stability, with only a 7 mV decay in the half-wave potential after 10 000 cyclic voltammetry cycles, superior to that of boron-doped one (B─Fe─N─C). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further confirm that heteroatom doping favors the ORR process, highlighting the potential of this catalyst for advanced energy applications.

To enhance the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance of silver-based catalysts in anion-exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs), a novel Co@Ag–AgCl core–shell-structured needle-like nanowire catalyst was synthesized via a polyol-solvothermal method using cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) as a surfactant. The results showed that when the CTAC concentration was 5 times the critical micelle concentration, the needle-like nanowires had the best dispersibility, and the synergistic interaction between the Ag–AgCl composite shell and cobalt core significantly enhanced the catalytic performance. The Co@Ag–AgCl3/C catalyst demonstrated exceptional ORR activity with a half-wave potential of 0.753 V, a limiting current density of 4.580 mA cm–2, and an electron transfer number close to 4 (3.88). Remarkably, during 10,000 cycles of durability testing (0.3–1.0 V vs RHE), the half-wave potential of the catalyst only shifted negatively by 17 mV, demonstrating better stability than commercial Pt/C (with a negative shift of 18 mV). This work provides critical insights for developing cost-effective non-platinum catalysts in AEMFCs.

In pursuit of highly active zinc-air battery (ZAB) catalysts, nitrogen doping has proven key to enhancing carbon-based non-metallic catalysts' performance in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). This study employed a novel method to synthesize variously sized ZnO materials coated with ZIF-8. Notably, smaller particle sizes correlated with reduced activation energy. ZnO-12, the smallest variant, fully carbonized at 800°C, resulting in zinc ion evaporation and the formation of an amorphous carbon nano-hollow structure, ZIF8/ZnO-12. This material showcased remarkable ORR properties, with an onset potential of 0.9 V (vs. RHE) and a Tafel slope of 71.4 mV dec-1, surpassing the benchmark Pt/C catalyst and exhibiting excellent stability. Moreover, in ZAB tests, ZIF8/ZnO-12 achieved a specific capacity of 816 mAh g-1, outperforming Pt/C. DFT calculations indicate that under alkaline conditions, nitrogen-doped carbon materials containing adsorbed oxygen and doped oxygen exhibit lower catalytic activation energy for the ORR, which is beneficial for accelerating the ORR. This research provides valuable insights into designing more efficient carbon-based non-metallic catalysts for ZABs.

Zinc-air batteries, as one of the emerging areas of interest in the quest for sustainable energy solutions, are hampered by the intrinsically sluggish kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and still suffer from the issues of low energy density. Herein, we report a MOF-on-MOF-derived electrocatalyst, FeCo@NC-II, designed to efficiently catalyze both ORR ( E half = 0.907 V) and OER ( E j=10 = 1.551 V) within alkaline environments, surpassing esteemed noble metal benchmarks (Pt/C and RuO 2 ). Systematically characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the synergistic effect of iron and cobalt bimetallic and the optimized distribution of nitrogen configuration improved the charge distribution of the catalysts, which in turn optimized the adsorption / desorption of oxygenated intermediates accelerating the reaction kinetics. While the unique leaf-like core–shell morphology and excellent pore structure of the FeCo@NC-II catalyst caused the improvement of mass transfer efficiency, electrical conductivity and stability. The core and shell of the precursor constructed through the MOF-on-MOF strategy achieved the effect of 1 + 1 > 2 in mutual cooperation. Further application to zinc-air batteries (ZABs) yielded remarkable power density (212.4 mW/cm 2 ), long cycle (more than 150 h) stability and superior energy density (∼1060 Wh/kg Zn). This work provides a methodology and an idea for the design, synthesis and optimization of advanced bifunctional electrocatalysts.

The extraction of chitin/chitosan from biowaste shrimp shells involves the heavy use of strong acids and alkaline solutions, resulting in a series of decomposed amino acids in the extraction waste. Herein, we demonstrate a new strategy to grow FeNi nanoalloys encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (3FeNi-NCNTs) at a high percentage by sintering the extracted amino acids, FeCl 3 , NiCl 2 and melamine at 900 ℃ in N 2 . The FeNi-NCNT exhibits a competitive limiting current density in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) to the commercial 20% Pt/C, with the onset potential and half-wave potential at 0.98 V and 0.84 V versus RHE. The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance also rivals the RuO 2 catalyst, and the overpotential (E j =10 mAcm -2 - E 1/2 ) of as low as 0.76 V, highlighting a green pathway to yield superior bifunctional catalysts at low cost. When used in zinc-air batteries (ZABs), the aqueous ZAB showed excellent cyclic and rate performance, together with the peak power density and specific capacity of 173.6 mW cm -2 and 809.9 mAh g -1 (corresponding to an energy density of XXX Wh kg -1 based on the mass of consumed zinc); and the flexible ZAB with a polyacryl-amide hydrogel electrolyte also exhibited a high peak power density of 133 mWcm -2 and a long cycle life of 140 h, superior to the reference Pt/RuO 2 -based ZABs, highlighting a sustainable biowaste upcycling of shrimp shell valorization on energy storage. Metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived carbon materials have emerged as important candidates in the field of catalysis because of their simple synthesis, easy construction, good conductivity, and high catalytic activity. Fe 3 C nanoparticles prepared from MOFs facilitate the catalytic activity of adjacent single atoms and exhibit powerful catalytic properties. In this work, a composite structured catalyst with Fe 3 C, Co nanoparticles, and M-N x single atoms (M = Co, Fe) was synthesized (denoted as Fe 3 C-Co-NC) by constructing Fe-doped bilayer zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) with a core–shell structure, which were used as bifunctional catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The Fe 3 C-Co-NC catalyst exhibits superior half-wave potential ( E 1/2 = 0.89 V) and overpotential ( E j=10 = 1.67 V) and outperforms the commercial Pt/C and RuO 2 . This result can be attributed to the high specific surface area, hierarchical pore structure , and high graphitization degree of the Fe 3 C-Co-NC catalyst, especially the synergistic effect between Fe 3 C and adjacent single-atom active sites. Specifically, the Zn–air battery assembled using the Fe 3 C-Co-NC catalyst displays high peak power density (203 mW cm −2 ) and specific capacity (815 mAh g −1 ) without degradation after charge/discharge cycles for 57 h. Therefore, this work offers important insights into the design and research of high-performance ORR/OER bifunctional catalysts.

Preparing economic, stable, and highly efficient non-precious-metal materials for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of great significance to the development of storage technologies and energy conversion. In this manuscript, we report a novel Cu based nano-catalyst as an electrode material fabricated by complexation-reduction method. Benefit from the stable of h-NB and the good electrical conductivity of CNT , the tri-functional electrocatalyst BN/Cu/CNT displays enhanced activity towards ORR and with the high current density of 0.95 mA/cm 2 , which is comparable to that of commercial Pt/C catalyst (cathodic peak current: 1.05 mA/cm 2 ). The BN/Cu/CNT also demonstrates high catalyst activity for the OER. From the rotating disk electrode and rotating ring-disk electrode tests, the number of electrons exchanged during the ORR is revealed to be 3.92, suggesting a 4e − pathway of O 2 reduction to H 2 O. The as prepared catalyst also has good stability and superior methanol tolerance to the commercial Pt/C catalyst in alkaline medium . Thus, it is anticipated that the BN/Cu/CNT catalyst is surely helpful for providing a new space to develop Pt-free catalyst.

The electrocatalyst of oxygen reduction reactions is one of the basic components of a fuel cell. In addition to costly Pt/C benchmark catalysts, cost-effective carbon-based catalysts have received the most attention. Enormous efforts have been dedicated to trade off the catalyst performance against the economic benefit. Optimizing composition and/or structure is a universal strategy for improving performance, but it is typically limited by tedious synthesis steps. Herein, we have found that directly introducing CNT into MOF-derived carbonaceous nanopolyhedra, i.e., introduced carbon nanotubes (CNTs) penetrated porous nitrogen-doped carbon polyhedra (NCP) dotted with cobalt nanoparticles (denoted as CNTs-Co@NCP), can optimize the catalytic activity, stability, and methanol tolerance. The hierarchical architecture combines the 0D/1D/3D Co/CNT/NCP interfaces and 1D/3D CNT/NCP junctions with the frameworks with a greatly exposed active surface, strengthened mass transport kinetics, stereoscopic electrical conductivity networks and structural robustness. The sterical self-consistency of MOF-self-assembly triggered by introduced CNTs demonstrates tactful ORR electrocatalytic activity regulation. Eventually, the CNTs-Co@NCP showed a half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.86 V and a diffusion-limited current density (JL) of 5.94 mA/cm2in alkaline electrolyte. The CNTs-Co@NCP was integrated into the cathode of a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) with an anion-exchange membrane, and an open-circuit voltage (OCV) of 0.93 V and a high power density of 46.6 mW cm−2were achieved. This work successfully developed a catalyst with competitive ORR performance through plain parameter fine-tuning without complex material design. Keywords:oxygen reduction reaction;sterical self-consistency;carbon-based catalyst;stereoscopic conductive network;DMFC
