Rapid detection of orange II dyes in water with SERS imprinted sensor based on PDA-modified MOFs@Ag

Yong Xue,Jing Shao,Guoqi Sui,Yuqin Ma,Hongji Li

In this paper, a novel SERS imprinted composite material was successfully synthesized with the aid of surface enhanced Raman scattering technology and molecular imprinting technology, which could be suitable for specific detection of organic dyes in the river. The UIO-66(NH 2 ) was wrapped with a thin layer of polydopamine (PDA), after loading Ag nanoparticles on rough surface, Ag@UIO-66(NH 2 )/PDA was synthesized and applied as the SERS substrate. In order to promote the ability of selective detection property in the practical sample, the molecularly imprinted polymer (Ag@UIO-66(NH 2 )/PDA-MIPs) was proposed. When the concentrations range changed between 10 −8 mol/L and 10 −10 mol/L, the intensity of characteristic peak at 1596 cm −1 exhibited a linear relationship with OII concentrations increasing. The limit of detection was low than 10 −10 mol/L, the correlation coefficient was 0.9985. The prepared SERS substrate could be available to the practical sample detection, which expanded SERS detection fields.

Persulfate activation of CuS@Ti3C2-based MXene with Bi-active centers toward Orange II removal under visible light

Qi Wang,Yu Mei,Ruoxue Zhou,Sridhar Komarneni,Jianfeng Ma

The Ti 3 C 2 -based MXene with unique lamellar nanostructure and high conductivity is expected to effectively improve photocatalytic ability of composites as a cocatalyst. Herein, two dimensional Ti 3 C 2 -based MXene nanosheets decorated with copper sulfide particles (CuS@MXene) were synthesized by hydrothermal treatment to boost catalytic persulfate (PS) activation under light, exhibiting remarkable reactivity and stability for the rapid removal of Orange II. The phase composition of CuS@MXene was detected by X-ray diffraction (XRD), the morphology of CuS@MXene was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), and the results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) proved the elemental composition and valence state of elements in the CuS@MXene. The dosage of PS and initial pH of solution were the main factors affecting the removal rate of Orange II, and the quenching experiment showed that 1 O 2 was the primary reactive species for the removal of Orange II in CuS@MXene -PS system. In addition, this study showed that CuS@MXene provided bi-active centers for PS activation, which was mainly attributed to the rapid charge transfer between dual electron-rich active centers of Cu and Ti. This system may be applicable to the degradation of other challenging organic pollutants .

A novel graphene oxide-carbon nanotubes anchored α-FeOOH hybrid activated persulfate system for enhanced degradation of Orange II

Shanshan Su,Yuyang Liu,Wei He,Xianchun Tang,Wei Jin,Yaping Zhao

Persulfate activation has been applied as one of the efficient advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) to remediate polluted environments. In this study, a novel α-FeOOH anchored by graphene oxide (GO)-carbon nanotubes (CNTs) aerogel (α-FeOOH@GCA) nanocomposite activated persulfate system (α-FeOOH@GCA + K 2 S 2 O 8 ) was applied for decolorization of Orange II (OII). The decolorization of OII was remarkably enhanced to a level of ~   99% in this system compared with that of pristine α-FeOOH (~   44%) or GO-CNTs (~   18%). The enhanced catalytic activity of α-FeOOH@GCA was due to the formation of a heterojunction by α-FeOOH and GO-CNTs as confirmed by the presence of Fe–O–C chemical bonds. The degradation intermediates of OII were comprehensively identified. The proposed degradation pathway of OII begins with the destruction of the conjugated structures of OII by the dominant reactive oxygen species , surface-bound SO 4 •− . The decolorization efficiency of OII by the α-FeOOH@GCA activated persulfate system decreased from the first to third cycle of recycling. Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation or introduction of a small amount of Fe 2+ could restore the activation of this system. The results show that the α-FeOOH@GCA persulfate activation system promises to be a highly efficient environmental remediation method for organic pollutants .

Natural Vanadium–Titanium Magnetite Activated Peroxydisulfate and Peroxymonosulfate for Acid Orange II Degradation: Different Activation Mechanisms and Influencing Factors

Zheng Zhang,Libin Zhao,Jingyuan Tian,Shaojie Ren,Wei Zhang

Persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes have emerged as a promising approach for the degradation of organic pollutants in aqueous environments due to their ability to generate sulfate radicals (SO4−·) within catalytic systems. In this study, peroxydisulfate (PDS) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) were investigated with the natural vanadium–titanium magnetite (VTM) as the activator for the degradation of acid orange II. The degradation efficiency increased with higher dosages of VTM or persulfate (both PDS and PMS) at lower concentrations (below 10 mM). However, excessive PMS (higher than 10 mM) in the PMS/VTM system led to the self-consumption of free radicals, significantly inhibiting the degradation of acid orange II. The VTM-activated PDS or PMS maintained an effective degradation of acid orange II in a wide pH range (3~11), suggesting remarkable pH stability. The SO4−·was the main active species in the PDS/VTM system, while hydroxyl radical (·OH) also contributed significantly to the PMS/VTM system. In addition, PMS exhibited better thermal stability during VTM activation. Coexisting ions in an aqueous environment such as bicarbonate (HCO3–), carbonate (CO32–), and hydrogen phosphate (HPO42–) had obvious effects on persulfate activation. Our study systematically investigated the different activation processes and influencing factors associated with PDS and PMS when the natural VTM was used as a catalyst, thereby providing new insights into the persulfate-mediated degradation of organic pollutants in aqueous environments.

Rapid simultaneous adsorption and SERS detection of acid orange II using versatile gold nanoparticles decorated NH2-MIL-101(Cr)

Qinzhi Wang,Zhan Shi,Zhi Wang,Yijian Zhao,Jianuo Li,Huifan Hu,Yaowen Bai,Zhihao Xu,Hui Zhangsun,Li Wang

Acid orange II (AO II), a typical azo pigment, is strictly controlled by legislation and prohibited in foodstuffs. Herein, we prepared gold nanoparticles decorated amino-functionalized Cr-based metal-organic frameworks [NH 2 -MIL-101(Cr)@Au] via an in-situ reduction method as a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate for simultaneous adsorption and detection of AO II. Gold nanoparticles are uniformly dispersed on the surface of NH 2 -MIL-101(Cr) owing to its three-dimensional (3D) structure and the interaction between –NH 2 and Au ions , providing more SERS-active “hot spots”. These NH 2 -MIL-101(Cr)@Au nanocomposites exhibited selective and high adsorption performance (419.85 mg g −1 ) for AO II, and could be used as superior SERS substrates for the detection of AO II with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.05 mg L −1 and wide detection range of 0.05–50 mg L −1 using portable Raman spectrometer. Furthermore, this SERS assay has been successfully used to determine AO II in orange juice and chili powder with good sensitivities.

α-Fe2O3/Cu2O(SO4) composite as a novel and efficient heterogeneous catalyst for photo-Fenton removal of Orange II

Xiaojun Guo,Yanan Xu,Fei Zha,Xiaohua Tang,Haifeng Tian

Hematite (α-Fe 2 O 3 ), as one of Fenton reagents, is widely investigated for the treatment of wastewater in the field of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). Considering the fast charge carrier recombination of hematite (α-Fe 2 O 3 ), we have successfully synthesized a novel and high active heterogeneous Fenton catalyst α-Fe 2 O 3 /Cu 2 O(SO 4 ) for the degradation of organic pollutants. The results show that the as-obtained Cu 2 O(SO 4 )-Fe9 composite exhibits excellent degradation properties of Orange II. 98.9% degradation rate was achieved for 100 mL of 50 mg/L Orange II solution in the condition of 0.3 g/L Cu 2 O(SO 4 )-Fe9 catalyst, 3 mM H 2 O 2 and pH = 3.5. The degradation rate constants of Cu 2 O(SO 4 )-Fe9 in the photo-Fenton-like system are 9.33 and 4.07 times of Cu 2 O(SO 4 ) and α-Fe 2 O 3 , respectively. In addition, the mechanism and pathway for the degradation of Orange II were proposed. The scheme of combining copper-based oxysulfate Cu 2 O(SO 4 ) with hematite (α-Fe 2 O 3 ) could improve the efficiency of charge carrier separation, which will further enhance the catalytic activity and expand its application in water purification.

A Simple and Sensitive Voltammetric Method for the Determination of Orange II Based on a Functionalized Graphene-Modified Electrode

Gao Yudong,Xie Zhengkun,Zhang Yulong,Zou Lina,Ye Baoxian

A simple and sensitive voltammetric sensor for Orange II was developed, based on a poly(sodium p-styrenesulfonate)-functionalized graphene-modified glassy carbon electrode. This voltammetric sensor showed strong accumulation ability and an excellent voltammetric response for Orange II. The electrochemical behavior of Orange II was systematically investigated in a pH 7.0 phosphate buffer solution. By linear sweep voltammetry, under optimum conditions, a good linear relationship was obtained between peak currents and Orange II concentrations in the wider range of 3 × 10−8 to 5 × 10−6 mol/L, with an LOD of 1 × 10−8 mol/L. In addition, the proposed Orange II sensor was successfully applied to real food samples with satisfactory recovery.

Spinel-type cobalt-manganese oxide catalyst for degradation of Orange II using a novel heterogeneous photo-chemical catalysis system

Qingzhuo Ni,Jianfeng Ma,Changhai Fan,Yong Kong,Mingguo Peng,Sridhar Komarneni

A spinel-type Co-Mn oxide was designed and synthesized through a two-step oxidation-precipitation method at modest temperatures. The Co-Mn oxide was applied as the catalyst in the presence of NaHSO 3 under visible light irradiation in order to establish the superiority of heterogeneous photo-chemical catalysis system. In the above system, the Co-Mn catalyst exhibited much better catalytic capability than that in either single photocatalysis or chemocatalysis system, implying that the Co-Mn catalyst could well combine photocatalysis and chemocatalysis to obtain the highest degradation efficiency of up to 94% within 40 min when using Orange II as the target pollutant. Recycling experiments results showed that the as-obtained catalyst has excellent stability and recyclability. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that the as-obtained Co-Mn catalyst had a cubic MnCo 2 O 4.5 spinel structure. Because of relatively low temperature (180 ℃) synthesis, the catalyst was formed with nanoparticles (25–65 nm) and high specific surface area as confirmed by SEM and BET analyses. XPS indicated the presence of both manganese and cobalt species that serve as reactive sites for the catalytic oxidation reactions. Rational degradation mechanisms responsible for superior catalytic activity and durability were proposed based on a series of experimental results. The active species such as Mn(III), holes and sulfate and hydroxyl radicals were proposed to be responsible for the outstanding degradation results.

Iron–copper bimetallic nanoparticles supported on hollow mesoporous silica spheres: an effective heterogeneous Fenton catalyst for orange II degradation

Jing Wang,Chao Liu,Lu Tong,Jiansheng Li,Rui Luo,Junwen Qi,Yang Li,Lianjun Wang

Iron–copper bimetallic nanoparticles supported on hollow mesoporous silica spheres as a composite catalyst (FeCu/HMS) was synthesized via a post-impregnation and sodium borohydride reduction strategy. The catalyst was characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, nitrogen physisorption, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and zeta potential. The results showed that the FeCu/HMS catalyst possessed hollow mesoporous structure with interior cavity transfixed by mesoporous silica shell. The iron–copper nanoparticles highly dispersed in the matrix of hollow mesoporous silica spheres. For comparison, three other catalysts, including solely iron nanoparticles supported on hollow mesoporous silica spheres (Fe/HMS), solely copper nanoparticles supported on hollow mesoporous silica spheres (Cu/HMS) and iron–copper nanoparticles supported on solid-core structured mesoporous silica spheres (FeCu/MS), were prepared by the similar procedure. To demonstrate the heterogeneous Fenton catalytic performance of the as-synthesized FeCu/HMS, orange II was chosen as a model contaminant. The results showed that 90.2% of 50 mg L−1 orange II was removed during 15 min at the reaction conditions of 1 g L−1 catalyst and 13.7 mM H2O2 in neutral pH and room temperature, and raised to 94.3% at 2 h. Kinetic analysis showed that the degradation of orange II follows the pseudo-first order and the apparent rate constant of FeCu/HMS was much higher than those of as comparison catalysts. Additionally, it was found that the addition of copper could make the catalyst less pH dependent and keep the high activity (93.8% orange II removal efficiency) even at alkaline circumstance (pH = 9). The remarkable catalytic performance of FeCu/HMS may be ascribed to the synergetic effect of iron and copper and “cavity effect” of the hollow structure. The stability and recoverability of the catalyst were assessed. The results indicated that the catalyst retained high catalytic activity (78.9% orange II removal efficiency) after 5 consecutive runs. The unique nanostructure and efficient catalytic activity make the catalyst to be a novel and prospective candidate in heterogeneous Fenton chemistry.

Electro-enhanced goethite activation of peroxydisulfate for the decolorization of Orange II at neutral pH: Efficiency, stability and mechanism

Heng Lin,Yating Li,Xiaoyu Mao,Hui Zhang

The decolorization of Orange II by an electro-enhanced goethite (α-FeOOH) activating peroxydisulfate (PDS) process (EC/α-FeOOH/PDS process) is reported in this study. Sulfate radicals was produced by activating PDS with Fe(II), which was generated continuously from the cathodic reduction of Fe(III) on α-FeOOH surface. The decolorization of Orange II showed little dependence on the initial pH. The comparison of Orange II decolorization under different systems was investigated. The surface properties of α-FeOOH before and after reaction were investigated by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). The radical species generated in EC/α-FeOOH/PDS process were determined by Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR). On the basis of the results, the mechanism of Orange II decolorization in EC/α-FeOOH /PDS process was proposed. The catalyst α-FeOOH maintained its high activity during repeated batch experiments. Response surface methodology (RSM) based on Box–Behnken statistical experiment design (BBD) was applied to analyze the experimental variables. The response surface methodology models were derived from the experimental results and the response surface plots of the pseudo-first-order decolorization rate constant were developed accordingly.

Fluorescent paper sensor based on green emissive carbon nanodots for visual detection of acid orange II in food samples

Qin Hu,Wenqian Sun,Lixia Xiao,Jie Han,Tianzu Guan,Wenyuan Zhou,Xiaojuan Gong,Zhen-quan Yang

This work for the first time presents a visual fluorescence paper sensor for accurate and on-site detection of acid orange II (AO 2 ) in food matrix, where green-emissive carbon nanodots (G-CDs) were exploited. The as-synthesized G-CDs had an average particle size of 3.9 ± 0.7 nm and displayed green emission at 511 nm upon excitation at 450 nm. When there existed AO 2 , the G-CDs fluorescence was effectively suppressed via inner filter effect (IFE) and dynamic interaction. The as-prepared G-CDs probe achieved a 0.01–25.0 μM linear scope and a 36.5 nM limit of detection. Particularly, owing to a distinguishable reduction in G-CDs emission intensity by a smartphone application , a visual probing platform along with a nanopaper-based device were be developed for recognizing AO 2 . The corresponding detection limits were severally 0.61 μM and 1.39 μM. Success was achieved in applying our fluorescence approaches for detecting AO 2 in Yuba, chili powder, sunflower seeds, tomato paste and orange juice samples, attaining desirable results. The present work underlines the potential of smartphone-integrated nanopaper based on CDs as an encouraging candidate for on-site AO 2 recognition in food matrix.

High-Efficiency Degradation of Orange II by Co78Si8B14/g-C3N4 Composite Catalyst in a Visible-Light-Assisted Peroxymonosulfate Activation System

Zhenling Yang,Guofeng Ma,Jun Zhang

Peroxynitrite-based advanced oxidation technology has gradually become a research hotspot for degrading dye wastewater due to its high efficiency and environmentally friendly features. Transition metal elements, which are commonly used as catalysts for the activation of persulfates, suffer from problems such as easy deactivation and leaching of metal ions, which limit their practical application. In this study, Co78Si8B14/g-C3N4composite catalysts were prepared by wet milling and ball milling methods to investigate their degradation of Orange II dyes by assisting the activation of peroxynitrite under visible light, and the effects of the catalyst ratio, light intensity, and the dosage of catalysts on the degradation performance were investigated. It was shown that the optimum ratio of Co78Si8B14to g-C3N4was 1:3, and the reaction rate constants for the degradation of orange dye by Co78Si8B14/g-C3N4+ PMS + VIS were 4.3 and 5.37 times higher than those of single g-C3N4+ PMS and Co78Si8B14+ PMS, respectively. Meanwhile, the composite catalyst also showed good degradation performance for rhodamine B, methyl orange, and methylene blue dyes, and the degradation effect could reach more than 75%. Cyclic stability tests showed that the catalyst maintained a high degradation efficiency of more than 94% over multiple cycles with low ion dissolution concentration. Its high catalytic activity is attributed to the lowest adsorption energy of the composite catalyst to PMS (Eads= −1.97 eV), which facilitates the degradation reaction, while the synergistic effect of g-C3N4and Co78Si8B14promotes the production of ·SO4, ·OH, and ·O2−. This study provides new ideas for the development of stable and efficient catalysts to expand the synergy between PMS-based and other advanced oxidation technologies.
