Methylated arsenic species are ubiquitous in the environment and resistant to removal by conventional treatment technologies. This study addressed this challenge based on the examination of the removal of dimethylarsinic acid (DMA) in a system that combines zerovalent iron (ZVI) and powdered activated carbon (PAC). The removal of DMA in the ZVI/PAC system was compared to that by coagulation, adsorption, electrochemical and Fenton oxidations, and other conventional methods. While only the electrochemical oxidation using a PbO 2 /Sb-SnO 2 /Ti anode allowed removing up to 60% DMA at several hours-long treatment times, the removal of DMA in the ZVI/PAC system containing 10 g/L ZVI and 2.5 g/L PAC with an initial pH of 2.0 was 95% for a 30 min reaction time. Specific roles of PAC, ZVI and its oxidation products in DMA removal were examined based on the spectroscopic data and quantum chemical modeling for the DMA/Fe(II) and DMA/Fe(III) systems. These methods demonstrated the formation of moderately strong DMA/Fe(II) and DMA/Fe(III) complexation. These results and relevant kinetic data were interpreted to indicate that the removal of DMA is governed by the rapid generation of Fe 2+ ions released as a result of accelerated ZVI corrosion in the galvanic ZVI/PAC microcells and ensuing formation of DMA/ Fe 2+ complexes that are readily adsorbed by PAC.

Sotorasib, the inaugural targeted inhibitor sanctioned for the management of patients afflicted with locally advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer presenting the KRAS G12C mutation, has encountered clinical application constraints due to its potential for cardiac injury as evidenced by safety trials. This investigation has elucidated that the heightened expression of neuraminidase-1 (NEU1) constitutes the principal etiology of cardiac damage induced by sotorasib. Mechanistically, sotorasib treatment inhibited the ubiquitinated degradation of NEU1, leading to its elevated expression, which induced downstream AKT signaling pathway inhibition and mitochondrial dysfunction leading to cardiomyocyte apoptosis. Meanwhile, in vivo and in vitro studies showed that D-pantothenic acid (D-PAC) alleviated sotorasib-induced cardiac damage by promoting NEU1 degradation. In conclusion, this study revealed that NEU1 is a key protein in sotorasib cardiotoxicity and that reducing the level of this protein is a critical strategy for the clinical treatment of sotorasib-induced cardiac injury. Nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds (NHCs) are hazardous, toxic, and persistent pollutants, thereby requiring urgent solutions. Herein, ZIF-67 was compounded with powder-activated carbon (PAC) to prepare Co/NC/PAC (NC i.e. nitrogen-doped carbon) particle electrodes for the electrocatalytic treatment of pyridine and diazines . Co/NC/PAC reflected the confinement of Co 3 O 4 /CoN/Co 0 into the N-doped graphitic-carbon layer to generate both pyrrolic-N and graphitic-N active sites. Under the optimal conditions (0.3 A, 12 mL min −1 , and initial pH 7.00), the degradation of four NHCs realized 90.2–93.7% efficiencies. The number and position of N atoms in NHCs directly affected the degradation efficiency. The following increasing order of facilitated degradation was recorded: pyridazine < pyrimidine < pyrazine < pyridine. The as-obtained Co/NC/PAC possessed the direct redox effect on NHCs, achieving fast electrocatalytic rate. Species like ·OH and H* were detected in Co/NC/PAC system with contributions to NHCs degradation estimated to 24% and 34%, respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed H* susceptible to attacking the N position, while the meta-position of C was subject to hydroxyl radical (·OH) addition. Overall, degradation of NHCs was achieved by hydro-reduction, oxidation , ring opening cleavage, hydroxylation, and mineralization. Ring-cleavage and mineralization of NHCs provided a novel electrochemical strategy to refractory wastewater treatment .

In this study, the relationship between coagulation-flocculation and sterilization was studied using two conventional flocculants, polyaluminum chloride (PAC) and poly dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride (PDMDAAC). Simulated wastewater containing kaolin and Escherichia coli was prepared. The bacterial removal rates of PAC and PDMDAAC under the same dosage are 46.3% and 19.5%, respectively. Which is far less than that of combined flocculants (94% bacterial removal rate). The synergistic effect of two flocculants was proved by contour method. β-Galactosidase activity, extracellular polysaccharides release, bacterial respiration activity and the activity of triphenyl tetrazolium chloride (TTC) dehydrogenase were investigated to clarify the sterilization kinetics and mechanisms. Two flocculants play the different roles in the treatment. PAC plays role of coagulation, charge neutralization, but PDMDAAC with quaternary ammonium groups is responsible for flocculation to form big flocs, which further enhances its contact with E. coli and contributes to sterilization. Sterilization by flocculants is divided into two processes, rapidly adsorbing and slowly killing, since the respiratory activity of E. coli in flocs gradually decreases with increasing contact time. The increase of flocculant dosage overcomes the hindrance of the secretion of extracellular polysaccharide polymers originating from E. coli to coagulation and sterilization. Sterilization of flocculant should be fully considered in drinking water treatment.

Manganese is widely distributed in the natural environment, and its presence in drinking water poses a risk to human health. In this study, an integrated pre-deposited powdered activated carbon (PAC) and manganese oxide (MnO x ) bio-functional layer of inorganic origin was coupled with gravity-driven ceramic membrane (GDCM) reactor. The study aims to investigate the effects of the membrane pore size and functional layer integrity on the Mn 2+ removal and flux. The results reveal that the average Mn 2+ removal efficiency of the large pore size membranes (300 kDa and 0.45 μm) was lower (75 % – 78 %) compared to those with smaller pores (15 kDa and 50 kDa) (87 % – 88 %) during long-term operation. Such differences are attributed to a period of manganese leakage before the PAC-MnO x matured in large-pore membrane units and a longer residence time in small-pore membranes. The functional layer leaded to reversible fouling, which was more prominent in membranes with larger pores (contributing to 93 % of total resistance) than those with smaller ones (ranging from 51.7 % to 61.9 %). Although the damaged functional layer resulted in occasional high Mn 2+ concentrations in the effluent, it did not significantly impact long-term flux development. Optical coherence tomography (OCT), in conjunction with COMSOL analysis, non-destructively evaluate biofilm formation process and indicate a homogeneous flow field and mass transfer in the “dual layers” (active film layer and ceramic membrane layer) of the GDCM. The presence of manganese-oxidizing bacteria ( Hyphomicrobium, Reyranella, and Pseudomonas ) in the GDCM reactor was verified using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and high-throughput sequencing. Additional material characterization revealed that a portion of the PAC-MnO x exhibited characteristics of birnessite, with autocatalytic oxidation of Mn 2+ , and that Mn (III) and Mn (IV) were the primary species in MnO x , which exhibited excellent catalytic oxidation and adsorption capabilities for Mn (II), respectively. Overall, the developed PAC-MnO x GDCM system shows great promise in efficiently removing manganese and producing water of desired quality, thereby holding potential in applications across several sectors of advanced water treatment processes.

Gamma oscillations have been frequently observed in levodopa-induced dyskinesia (LID), manifest as broadband (60-120 Hz) and narrowband (80-110 Hz) gamma activity in cortico-striatal projection. We investigated the electrophysiological mechanisms and correlation of gamma oscillations with dyskinesia severity, while assessing the administration of fenobam, a selective metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 (mGluR5) antagonist, in regulating dyskinesia-associated gamma activity. We conducted simultaneous electrophysiological recordings in Striatum (Str) and primary motor cortex (M1), together with Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale scoring (AIMs). Phase-amplitude coupling (PAC), power, coherence, and Granger causality analyses were conducted for electrophysiological data. The findings demonstrated increased beta oscillations with directionality from M1 to Str in parkinsonian state. During on-state dyskinesia, elevated broadband gamma activity was modulated by the phase of theta activity in Str, while M1 → Str gamma causality mediated narrowband gamma oscillations in Str. Striatal gamma power (both periodic and aperiodic power), periodic power, peak frequency, and PAC at 80 min (corresponding to the peak dyskinesia) after repeated levodopa injections across recording days (day 30, 33, 36, 39, and 42) increased progressively, correlating with total AIMs. Additionally, a time-dependent parabolic trend of PAC, peak frequency and gamma power was observed after levodopa injection on day 42 from 20 to 120 min, which also correlated with corresponding AIMs. Fenobam effectively alleviates dyskinesia, suppresses enhanced gamma oscillations in the M1-Str directionality, and reduces PAC in Str. The temporal characteristics of gamma oscillations provide parameters for classifying LID severity. Antagonizing striatal mGluR5, a promising therapeutic target for dyskinesia, exerts its effects by modulating gamma activity.

Developing strategies to target injured pancreatic acinar cells (PACs) in conjunction with primary pathophysiology-specific pharmacological therapy presents a challenge in the management of acute pancreatitis (AP). We designed and synthesized a trypsin-cleavable organosilica precursor bridged by arginine-based amide bonds, leveraging trypsin’s ability to selectively identify guanidino groups on arginine via Asp189 at the active S1 pocket and cleave the carboxy-terminal (C-terminal) amide bond via catalytic triads. The precursors were incorporated into the framework of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) for encapsulating the membrane-permeable Ca2+ chelator BAPTA-AM with a high loading content (∼43.9%). Mesenchymal stem cell membrane coating and surface modification with PAC-targeting ligands endow MSNs with inflammation recruitment and precise PAC-targeting abilities, resulting in the highest distribution at 3 h in the pancreas with 4.7-fold more accumulation than that of naked MSNs. The outcomes transpired as follows: After bioinspired MSNs’ skeleton biodegradation by prematurely and massively activated trypsin, BAPTA-AM was on-demand released in injured PACs, thereby effectively eliminating intracellular calcium overload (reduced Ca2+ level by 81.3%), restoring cellular redox status, blocking inflammatory cascades, and inhibiting cell necrosis by impeding the IκBα/NF-κB/TNF-α/IL-6 and CaMK-II/p-RIP3/p-MLKL/caspase-8,9 signaling pathways. In AP mice, a single dose of the formulation significantly restored pancreatic function (lipase and amylase reduced more by 60%) and improved the survival rate from 50 to 91.6%. The formulation offers a potentially effective strategy for clinical translation in AP treatment.

Efficient extraction of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) poses a significant challenge for water treatment and food safety. Here, we report a multifunctional covalent organic framework (COF) for the selective and efficient extraction of PFAS. A facile room-temperature imine condensation of two monomers, 2,2′-bis(trifluoromethyl)-4,4′-diaminobiphenyl (BTFDA) and 1,3,5-triformylphloroglucinol (Tp), produced a multifunctional COF (TpBTFDA). TpBTFDA was rationally designed to synergistically integrate chemical moieties capable of leveraging both fluorophilic (via trifluoromethyl groups) and hydrogen bonding (via β-ketoenamine linkages) interactions with PFAS molecules. Batch adsorption experiments, coupled with systematic comparative studies against control COFs (lacking either the fluorophilic or hydrogen-bonding sites), revealed that this synergistic interplay is essential for the efficient capture of PFAS, demonstrating that both interaction mechanisms are indispensable. Consequently, the TpBTFDA exhibited exceptionally high adsorption capacities (379–521 mg g–1) for eight PFAS. The fabricated TpBTFDA was applied to develop a selective solid-phase extraction method for UHPLC-MS/MS determination of PFAS. The developed method showed a wide linear range (0.01–200 μg L–1), low detection limits (0.006–0.59 μg L–1), good precision (RSD ≤ 5.2%), and recovery (83.0–112.3%) for the accurate determination of PFAS in real water and food samples. This study underscores the potential of rationally designed COFs for effectively enriching and detecting PFAS in practical applications.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), as highly recalcitrant pollutants, tend to accumulate in sludge, posing challenges for subsequent treatment and resource recovery. Sludge alkaline fermentation (SAF) produces sludge alkaline fermentation liquid (SAFL) with potential for circular-economy reuse, while simultaneously transferring PFASs from the solid phase into SAFL, thereby creating a trade-off between resource recovery and contamination. Coagulation is a critical step in SAFL separation, yet the fate of PFASs during this process remains poorly understood. This study evaluated the performance of polyaluminum chloride (PAC) and polyferric sulfate (PFS) in removing nine representative legacy and emerging PFASs from SAFL. High removal efficiencies were achieved across PFASs with varying chain lengths and headgroups, with long-chain PFASs (C ≥ 8) reaching up to 74% and emerging short-chain PFASs (C < 8) up to 55%. Spectroscopic analysis indicated that the hydrophobic interaction between PFASs and the Al/Fe based hydrolysates were the primary driving force for the direct removal of PFASs by coagulants. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in SAFL played a facilitating role in PFASs removal, with proteins identified as the key contributors. DOM analysis revealed that additional coagulants facilitated the removal of protein-like substance and hydrophobic macromolecules that have strong affinities for PFASs. Molecular dynamics simulations suggested that Al/Fe-based hydrolysates increased electrostatic attraction and binding free energy, thereby increasing protein compactness and promoting co-precipitation removal of PFASs. These findings offer valuable insights for optimizing coagulation strategies in practical applications to effectively mitigate ecological risks in DOM-rich water contaminated with PFASs.

Freshwater scarcity necessitates the use of unconventional water sources, yet their direct use poses ecological risks, including soil salinization and the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Capacitive deionization (CDI) is a promising brackish water desalination technology, but conventional carbon electrodes often suffer from performance limitations due to co-ion effects and slow ion diffusion. This study reported a Fe 1 Ni 3 -MOFs@AC composite electrode-based hybrid CDI (HCDI) for simultaneous removal of salinity and ARGs, signifying a critical advancement for treating complex saline wastewater. When polarization was applied at 1.5 V, the Fe 1 Ni 3 -MOFs@AC composite electrode exhibited a specific capacitance 30.4 F/g and a salt adsorption capacity of 26.0 mg/g, which were 103% and 83% higher than those of the pristine activated carbon (AC) electrode. The improved HCDI performance of the Fe 1 Ni 3 -MOFs@AC composite electrode should result from its hierarchical porous structure, which enhances rapid charge-transfer kinetics and ion diffusion rates. Meanwhile, the system demonstrated exceptional durability, maintaining a high desalination capacity with no significant degradation over 35 cycles. Within 30 min, the electrode removed >94% of sulA , tetL , and chL ARGs, far exceeding the levels in non-polarized controls. Coexisting salt ions synergistically enhanced the 3% removal efficiency of ARG through co-adsorption. This work establishes MOF-enhanced HCDI as a robust platform for concurrent desalination and ARG mitigation, offering an energy-efficient solution for sustainable water reuse in agricultural and industrial applications.

The increasing environmental burden of drilling wastewater calls for more efficient and mechanistically informed treatment strategies to support the sustainable development of oil and gas operations. This study systematically compares the performance of three flocculants—polyaluminum chloride (PAC), polyaluminum ferric silicate (PSAF), and aluminum sulfate (Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 )—in the flocculation-flotation treatment of drilling wastewater, with an emphasis on elucidating floc–bubble interaction mechanisms. Flotation experiments demonstrated that PAC achieved the highest suspended solids (SS) removal efficiency (80.58 % at 1.0 g/L), followed by PSAF and Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 . Comprehensive characterization, including FTIR, zeta potential, contact angle analysis, and floc size measurement, revealed that PAC formed large, moderately hydrophobic flocs with strong structural integrity and stable bubble adhesion. In contrast, Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 generated smaller, highly hydrophobic flocs with low interfacial energy barriers, leading to poor aggregate stability. The EDLVO theory was applied to calculate interaction energy profiles, demonstrating that floc–bubble adhesion is governed by the combined effects of van der Waals, electrostatic, and hydrophobic interactions. PAC presented the most balanced profile, combining high adhesion potential with strong post-attachment stability. These findings provide novel mechanistic insights for optimizing flocculation-flotation processes in complex wastewater systems, offering a theoretical basis for practical engineering applications.

The pre-coagulation process significantly affects the operational efficiency and membrane fouling behavior of membrane bioreactors (MBRs). Nevertheless, the underlying mechanisms remain inadequately elucidated with the development of innovative MBRs. This study evaluated the operational performance of aerobic granular sludge membrane bioreactor (AGMBR) and algal-bacterial aerobic granular sludge membrane bioreactor (ABGMBR) following the application of polymeric aluminum chloride (PAC) and modified microbial flocculant (MMF). The ABGMBR exhibited superior pollutant removal rates and permeate flux compared to the AGMBR owing to its excellent bacteria-algal symbiosis system. PAC/MMF exhibited exceptional flocculation performance, effectively inhibiting foulant adhesion on the membrane surface. Moreover, the extended Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek theory elucidated that the PAC/MMF system hindered the combination of membrane-foulant and foulant-foulant, confirming its efficacy in controlling membrane fouling in AGMBR and ABGMBR. Correlation analysis revealed that PAC/MMF significantly removed the chemical oxygen demand and suspended solids content in raw sewage, which was the primary reason for the alleviation of membrane fouling. This study elucidates the antifouling mechanisms of dual coagulation in granular sludge-membrane systems and offers an economical, efficient, and sustainable strategy for wastewater treatment.
