Poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), a biodegradable polymer, is a promising material in the food packaging industry. Its high elongation at break, ease of processibility, and biodegradability make it a substitute for low-density polyethylene. But its use in food packaging is limited to its cost, low tensile strength, and barrier properties. Herein, using a green approach, we prepared PBAT composite film with epoxidized soya bean oil (ESO) and encapsulated lignin (Lig)/tannic acid (Ta) (ESO-Lig-Ta) as filler. Different amounts (1, 2, 3%) of ESO-Lig-Ta were added to the composite film, and the effect on the properties was studied. The result showed that the ESO-Lig-Ta improved the tensile strength by more than 100%, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed a homogenous dispersion of the encapsulated filler in the matrix. The ultraviolet (UV) transmission decreased with an increasing amount of ESO-Lig-Ta. There was a reduced water vapor and oxygen transmission rate due to ESO-Lig-Ta than the neat PBAT film. Food (fresh potato and onion) sealed with the composite film remained fresh for up to 12 days at room temperature. The biodegradation of the composite film resulted from hydrolysis C-O/C = O, as shown by attenuated total reflection–Fourier transform infrared spectra (ATR-FTIR). The composite film can be extensively applied in short-lived fresh food packaging and long-term preservation and packaging of dry food products. Graphical ESO-encapsulated lignin and tannic acid incorporated into PBAT film as a potential food packaging film for short-live fresh products and long-term storage of dry food products.

The lysine p-toluenesulfonic acid ionic liquid ([Lys][p-TSA]), one kinds of amino acid ionic liquids, was synthesized by one-step method, which was employed to control the interfacial structure and degradation behavior of poly(lactide)/poly(butylene adipate- co -terephthalate) (PLA/PBAT) blends. The [Lys][p-TSA] was incorporated into PLA/PBAT blends with different contents by melt blending, and the effect of [Lys][P-TSA] on the interfacial structure, thermal stability, crystallization behavior, rheological behavior and degradation behavior of PLA/PBAT blends were investigated. The SEM results demonstrate that [Lys][p-TSA] could enhance the compatibility between PLA and PBAT in the PLA/PBAT blends. Thermal gravimetric results showed that the incorporation of [Lys][p-TSA] into PLA/PBAT blends could not affect their thermal stability. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements showed that [Lys][p-TSA] can improve the crystallinity of PLA, and the rheological behavior of the blends indicated that [Lys][p-TSA] can enhance the chain mobility of PLA and PBAT. More importantly, the degradation behavior of the blends revealed that [Lys][p-TSA] could affect the distribution of lipase in PLA/PBAT blends, so that the relative degradation rate of each component of the blends was well-controlled. As the [Lys][p-TSA] content increased, the degradation rate of the PLA/PBAT blend in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) solution, artificial seawater, porcine pancreas lipase (PPL) solution and Candida antarctica lipase B (CALB) solution was enhanced. When the contents of [Lys][p-TSA] was 4 phr in the PLA/PBAT blend, the weight loss of the blend in PPL enzyme solution reached to 31.59% after 49 days, which was 3.79 times higher than that of PLA/PBAT blend without [Lys][p-TSA]. The enzymatic degradation mechanism of the blends was studied by density functional theory (DFT) and 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and it was found that [Lys][p-TSA] could control the distribution of lipase in the blends, which accelerated the enzymatic degradation of the PLA/PBAT blend. This study could provide some new way on enhancing the properties of PLA/PBAT blends while reducing the harm of microplastics.

Blending thermoplastic starch (TPS) with poly (lactic acid) (PLA) and poly (butylene adipate- co -terephthalate) (PBAT) is considered as one of the most promising ways to produce fully biodegradable and renewable biopolymers. However, these composite biopolymers face challenges such as, poor mechanical performance, inferior water vapor and ultraviolet barrier resistance, and weak antibacterial property due to the incompatibility of hydrophilic TPS with hydrophobic PLA and PBAT. In this work, Ag nanoparticles were uniformly in-situ grown on cellulose nanocrystal to prepare a novel silver nanoparticles loaded-cellulose nanocrystal (Ag-CNC). Then, antimicrobial TPS/PLA/PBAT composite films with enhanced mechanical properties, superior water vapor barrier capacity and highly UV-shielding effect were fabricated by introducing Ag-CNC and oligo (lactic acid) grafting starch (OLA- g -ST, an eco-friendly compatibilizer) into TPS, PLA and PBAT matrix. As expected, the introduction of Ag-CNC significantly improved antibacterial property and UV-shielding effect (283 % increased) of TPS/PLA/PBAT composite films. Moreover, the incorporation of OLA- g -ST and Ag-CNC into the composites resulted in a notable enhancement of the mechanical properties (tensile strength and elongation at break increased by 77.95 % and 63.23 %, respectively) and water vapor barrier capacity (40.8 % increased) of TPS/PLA/PBAT composite films. Hence, the innovative fully biodegradable composite films displayed remarkable potential in the field of renewable biopolymers as well as multifunctional packages.

While nanoparticles were considered to be the most promising compatibilizers for immiscible polymer blends , high-efficient nanoparticle-based compatibilizers were still under development. Herein, a high-reactive silica nanosheet (HRN) compatibilizer with excellent compatibilization effect was synthesized and its compatibilization effect was investigated. The HRN compatibilizer was fabricated by skillfully melt-blending amino functionalized silica hollow spheres (AHS) and the poly(styrene-co-glycidyl methacrylate) (PSGMA) with average ten reactive epoxy groups per chain. During the mixing, the AHS were crushed to nanosheets upon the strong shearing and simultaneously grafted PSGMA chains on nanosheets via the reaction of epoxy and amino groups. The PSGMA with high epoxy groups content endowed the HRN with high reactivity. To demonstrate the compatibilization efficiency of our high-reactive compatibilizer, different amounts of HRN were incorporated into the immiscible polylactic (l-acid)/polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PLLA/PBAT) blend, a blend system widely applied in packing and agricultural films, to investigate and compare the changes in morphologies and mechanical properties . Only 3 wt% addition of HRN compatibilizer could significantly decrease the droplets size and dramatically improve the tensile strength and elongation at break of the blend by 1.4 and 23 times. The present work provided a new idea for the development of nanoparticle-based compatibilizer with high compatibilization efficiency.

With the rapid development of artificial intelligence technology, intelligent sensing and monitoring is evolving from single-modality sensor data acquisition to multimodal and adaptive perception, a development that aligns with the strategies of green environmental protection and sustainable development. Machine learning-based multimodal intelligent monitoring employ smart sensors to collect diverse sensory data. The smart sensor is a biodegradable, reusable and multi-responsive shape memory PBAT/PCL foam prepared by one-step supercritical CO 2 foaming and sinter molding. The foam exhibits multi-responsive actuation under thermal, near-infrared light, and microwave stimuli. Functionally, this foam can serve as a self-sensing actuator capable of lifting up to 40 times its own weight upon external stimulation. Furthermore, it operates as a contact-separation nanogenerator with shape memory-controlled alternating current output, generating a maximum voltage of 1.3 V. As a piezoresistive sensor, the foam demonstrates a gauge factor of 25.54 and a response time of 175 ms, and stability over1,000 cycles, confirming its practicality and reproducibility. Notably, the shape memory effect enables tunable sensor sensitivity. Integration of shape memory sensor and machine learning-based multimodal intelligent recognition enables to predict with 100 % accuracy. This technology demonstrates broad application prospects in industrial equipment health management, human–machine interaction, smart healthcare, and environmental monitoring, providing innovative solutions for more precise and adaptive real-time monitoring and early warning systems.

Poly (butylene adipate- co -terephthalate) (PBAT)/polylactic acid (PLA) blended with compatibilizers (polycaprolactone, PCL; poly (ethylene glycol), PEG; titanium dioxide, nano-TiO 2 ) ( [email protected] composites) were developed by melt processing. Natamycin incorporated into [email protected] blend composites formed [email protected] films, which exhibited high tensile strength (24.1–43.5 MPa) and elongation at break (85.8–258.2 %), and exhibited good oxygen permeability, water vapor permeability, surface hydrophobicity and biodegradability. The in vitro results revealed that inhibition of Penicillium expansum cell growth of the [email protected] films with addition of 1.0 wt% natamycin reached 95.72 %. The [email protected] film with natamycin effectively reduced incidence of decay (1.52 %) on grapes, maintained their quality, and inhibited the growth of pathogenic fungi to up to 0.42 log cfu·g −1 . This study generates new insights into the preservation properties of antimicrobial [email protected] film, which endow it with great application potential as a novel and eco-friendly packaging material for the food industry.

A new methodology to fabricate the compatibilizer for PLA/PBAT blends through ring-opening polymerization of lactide using hydroxyl-terminated PBAT (HO-PBAT-OH) as macro-initiator in a high-shear reactor was developed. The modified polylactic acid (PLA-b) with weight-average molecular weights ( M w ) in the range of 1.42 × 10 5 to 2.96 × 10 5 Da were synthesized using 1%∼4% content of HO-PBAT-OH with M w of 4.86 × 10 5 Da. FTIR and NMR spectroscopy confirmed the covalent attachment of PBAT segments to the PLA backbone through ester linkages, establishing a well-defined block architecture. This block structure substantially improved the interfacial compatibility between PLA-b and PBAT, as evidenced by a refined morphology with reduced PBAT domain sizes and enhanced interfacial adhesion. DSC and DMA revealed a convergence of the glass transition temperatures ( T g ) of the two constituent polymers, indicating the improved miscibility. Rheological measurement also confirmed the improvement of miscibility through presenting a more coherent viscoelastic response. Notably, PLA-b/PBAT blends at a 70/30 wt% ratio exhibited a superior balance of mechanical properties compared to a conventional PLA/PBAT physical blend of the same composition, delivering a tensile strength of 42.6 MPa, an exceptional elongation at break of 280% and impact strength of 28.11 kJ/m 2 . This approach provides a simple and economically viable route to high-performance PLA/PBAT blends with an optimized combination of strength and ductility.

Biodegradable films mitigate plastic pollution but often lack UV-aging resistance, shortening their lifespan. While anti-aging additives can boost the films' durability, small molecule migration constrains the extension of their service life. This study introduces a straightforward solid-phase reaction for producing carbon black (CB) grafted with the UV absorber UV531, termed CB-UV531. This material was then blended with the biodegradable polymer PBAT and transformed into a film via blow molding, yielding a durable UV-resistant biodegradable film (PBAT/CB-UV531). This solid-phase grafting reaction does not require any solvents, thereby reducing solvent contamination and waste, and it is simple to operate, allowing for scalable production. Compared to the unmodified CB, the obtained CB-UV531 exhibits significantly improved thermal stability, which can effectively reduce the loss of UV531 during the subsequent high-temperature film-blowing process. Furthermore, the chemically bonded UV absorber on the surface of CB-UV531, coupled with its reduced particle size, promotes enhanced dispersibility and consistent stability within the PBAT/CB-UV531 film, markedly improving its long-term resistance to UV aging. This method is expected to enhance the anti-aging effects of various commercial light stabilizer additives and can be used to extend the lifespan of different biodegradable materials. Highlights A simple solid-phase reaction method was developed to prepare CB-UV531. CB-UV531 reveals smaller size and superior dispersibility. Biodegradable PBAT/CB-UV531 film was prepared via a blowing process. UV531 migration loss in PBAT/CB-UV531 film is significantly reduced. PBAT/CB-UV531 film shows enhanced thermal stability and aging resistance.

Flexible wearable strain sensors have attracted much attention in the field of health monitoring due to their advantages of simple preparation process and good comfort. However, in daily use, factors like friction, sweat during exercise, or harsh environments such as rain may lead to the failure of the strain sensor. Therefore, this study designed a strain sensor that is waterproof, wear-resistant, resistant to various corrosive fluids and has biodegradation characteristics. The strain sensor was prepared by using carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with high length-to-diameter ratio as conductive filler and environment-friendly polybutylene terephthalate (PBAT) as matrix and packaging materials. The CNTs/PBAT strain sensor has reversible and repeatable resistance at 5 %–30 % strain, stable cycle durability (2500 cycles), and low carbon nanotube content (0.45 %). Moerover, it has thermal repair properties that can eliminate creep caused by long-term use of polymers and extend their service-life. In addition, the PBAT/CNTs/PBAT strain sensor operates safely within the safe voltage range of the human body, can monitor body movement in air and water, and has a wide range of applications in wearable sports health.

Plastic packaging causes significant environmental pollution despite its widespread use and convenience. To address the adverse environmental impact of plastic packaging, substituting traditional plastics with biodegradable polymers and degrading them via composting or soil burial has emerged as a mitigation strategy. However, various factors impede degradation efficiency during these processes, extending degradation times and increasing costs. This study introduced an innovative fully biodegradable film composed of bamboo fiber (BF) and poly(butylene succinate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), utilizing Tenebrio molitor larvae for biological erosion to generate metabolites that rapidly degrade in soil. To enhance larval consumption, we employed novel strategies: extending the larval period to 17 weeks through low-temperature (18 °C) and prolonged light exposure (24 h), and pretreating films with solid-state fermentation (SSF) to reduce puncture strength to 0.018 MPa. The results indicate that under extended larval conditions, total film consumption reached ∼300 g per 100 larvae; after bioerosion, PBAT molecular weight decreased by ∼10-fold; and metabolized BF/PBAT film residues achieved complete soil homogenization within 4 weeks, enabling rapid degradation while reducing processing time and costs.

A series of novel biodegradable copolyesters named poly(butylene 3-methyl adipate co -terephthalate) (PBA m T) were synthesized from the monomers of 3-methyl adipic acid (AA m ), 1,4-butanediol (BDO), and terephthalic acid (TPA) through a process of esterification and polycondensation. 1 H NMR analysis shows that they are random copolymers whose composition can be well controlled by the feed ratio of monomers. From the results of DSC and XRD, the introduction of methyl group successfully destroys the crystallizability of the PBA m chains, thus making it become a relative soft segment compared to PBA, while these random PBA m T copolymers constructed by soft segment PBA m and rigid segment PBT change from semi-crystalline polymers to nearly amorphous polymers as the feed ratio of A m increases. Especially, mechanical tests reveal that the copolymers show outstanding elasticity and rebound resilience with excellent strength. These thermoplastic copolyester elastomers with good performance by simply introduction of branched methyl group on polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT) copolymer chains may well explore the potential application of biodegradable PBAT-based material.

Soil environment on earth contains a variety of ions, which are expected to play a vital role in the biodegradation of plastics discarded in the environment. In this work, poly(butyleneadipate- co -terephthalate) (PBAT) is employed as a model biodegradable plastic to study the specific ion effects on the enzymatic degradation of polyester plastics. The results show that the specific ion effects on the enzymatic degradation rate of the PBAT films and on the catalytic rate constant for the enzymatic hydrolysis of the ester bonds are strongly dependent on temperature and ionic strength. Both the enzymatic degradation rate and catalytic rate constant decrease following the trends Na + > K + > Ca 2+ and Cl − > SO 4
2− > NO 3
− for cations and anions, respectively, indicating that the ion-specific enzymatic degradation of the PBAT films is closely correlated with the specific ion effects on enzymatic hydrolysis of the ester bonds. Our study shows that the specific ion effects on the enzyme activity can be understood by taking into account the ion-specific cation-anion interaction, ionic dispersion force, salting-out effect and salting-in effect. This study of specific ion effects on the enzymatic hydrolysis of the ester bonds and the resultant enzymatic degradation of the PBAT films would offer us a new clue to develop new biodegradable, environmentally friendly synthetic plastics.
