Facile immobilization of graphene nanosheets onto PBO fibers via MOF-mediated coagulation strategy: Multifunctional interface with self-healing and ultraviolet-resistance performance

Qing Shao,Fei Lu,Long Yu,Xirong Xu,Xinghao Huang,Yudong Huang,Zhen Hu

The surface of poly (p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO) fibers with self-healing and ultraviolet (UV)-resistance performance play the key role in prolonging their service lifespan. Although great advances have been made in the single aspect of above two properties, integration of self-healing and anti-UV performance into the surface of PBO fiber is still a challenge. In this study, the coagulation strategy mediated by metal-organic framework (MOF) is proposed to construct the multifunctional surface of PBO fibers. The spindle-like iron (III)-based MOF (MIL-88B-NH 2 ) nanocrystals are firstly immobilized onto the surface of PBO-COOH through hydrothermal reaction , then serving as the medium layer to further immobilize sufficient graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets . Benefitting from the favorable near-infrared (NIR, 808 nm) photothermal conversion performance of GO nanolayers, the monofilament composite-PBO@Fe-MIL-88B-NH 2 -GO-TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) exhibited a stable and high self-healing efficiency (approximately 80%) within five cycle times. Meanwhile, the cooperative adsorption and shielding weaken effects of MOF-GO nanolayers enabled PBO fibers with excellent anti-UV properties that are superior to much reported literatures after 96 h aging time and eventually increased by 75% compared with untreated PBO fiber. In view of the varieties and multifunctionalities of MOFs and carbon nanomaterials , MOF-mediated coagulation strategy would provide guidance for preparing multifunctional composite materials.

In situ-grown Pt nanocatalysts on PBO-derived nano-fibrillated carbon paper: Efficient self-supporting electrodes for aqueous and flexible quasi-solid Zn-air batteries

Tao Zhang,Ling Meng,Junli Ren,Ning Wang,Lei Du,Xiting Zhang,Lixin Xing,Chunmei Tang,Siyu Ye

As a representative multi-layer energy storage device, zinc-air batteries (ZABs) are inevitably limited by the contact problem between electrode interfaces. Therefore, developing electrode structures with enhanced electron and mass transfer capabilities is crucial for advancing this technology. In this work, Poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole)(PBO) carbon paper with in-situ growth Pt catalyst has been prepared and as self-supporting cathode catalyst layer, expanding the traditional three-phase reaction interface to the entire 3D interconnected structure of the air electrode, effectively integrating the catalytic layer with the gas diffusion layer. The modified PBO CO 2 @A-N surface, adorned with uniformly distributed platinum nanoparticles. This modification resulted in exceptional oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance, characterized by a substantial electrochemical surface area (200.2 m 2 g Pt −1 ) and an half-wave potential of 0.891 V. In addition, the primary PBO CO 2 @A-N-ZAB demonstrated remarkable peak power densities of 128.1 mW cm −2 in aqueous and 59.1 mW cm −2 in flexible primary zinc-air batteries, underscoring its potential for high-performance energy storage applications.

Superconductivity in LiFeO2Fe2Se2 with anti-PbO-type spacer layers

X. F. Lu,N. Z. Wang,G. H. Zhang,X. G. Luo,Z. M. Ma,B. Lei,F. Q. Huang,X. H. Chen

We report on a superconductor LiFeO${}_{2}$Fe${}_{2}$Se${}_{2}$ with ${T}_{\mathrm{c}}\ensuremath{\sim}43$ K, synthesized via the hydrothermal method. The anti-PbO-type spacer layer of LiFeO${}_{2}$ has been successfully intercalated between the anti-PbO-type FeSe layer, which results in a high-${T}_{\mathrm{c}}$ superconductivity in this iron selenide material. In this material, the LiFeO${}_{2}$ layer is electrically neutral and does not act as an electron donor, which is remarkably different from other heavily electron-doped intercalated FeSe-derived superconductors. Based on our results and previous reports on FeSe-based superconductors, we figure out a $\mathsf{V}$-shaped anion height from the Fe layer dependence of ${T}_{\mathrm{c}}$ in the FeSe-derived superconductors, which is in contrast to the inverse $\mathsf{V}$-shaped one for the FeAs-based superconductors. Our studies expand the categories of the iron-based superconductors and open a door in the quest for potential superconductors with various spacer layers, which is helpful for the study of the underlying physics in iron-based high-${T}_{\mathrm{c}}$ superconductors.

Ultrastrong metallized PBO fibers for switchable microwave shielding and Joule heating

Yi-Fan Luo,Xiao-Juan Lei,Kai Zhang,Ming Wang

Multifunctional fibers capable of achieving switchable electromagnetic shielding effects while integrating versatile responsive capabilities are critically important for wearable electronics and electromagnetic shielding technologies. Nevertheless, existing conductive fibers typically suffer from passive shielding characteristics and insufficient mechanical performance, whereas poly( p -phenylene-2, 6-benzobisoxazole) (PBO) fibers exhibit superior mechanical properties yet lack multifunctionality. To resolve this, we developed a metallized PBO fiber platform featuring switchable microwave shielding and Joule heating through interfacial engineering of self-assembled copper-polymer networks. A polydopamine-mediated electroless plating strategy, utilizing polydopamine-anchored silver nanoparticles as catalytic sites, enables uniform Cu 2 O/Cu coatings with high electrical conductivity (up to 1.6 × 10 5  S/m), while remarkably enhancing mechanical properties within an optimal conductivity range compared to pristine PBO fibers. The aligned conductive fibers demonstrate a 55 dB dynamic EMI shielding range via angle-dependent grating effects, enabling real-time switching between shielding (45 dB) and transmission (5 dB) states through rotational adjustment. Simultaneously, the metallized coating delivers multifunctional capabilities including rapid electrothermal response (reaching 110 °C at 0.07 A), superhydrophobicity (157.4° contact angle), and self-cleaning performance. This work successfully reconciles the longstanding conflict between ultrahigh mechanical strength and active EMI/thermal regulation functionalities, establishing a new paradigm for multifunctional fiber development in aerospace and wearable systems.

Engineering Pb/PbO heterojunction with oxygen vacancies for room-temperature electrosynthesis of γ-valerolactone

Shasha Fang,Ran Hao,Wenjiong Li,Yixin Luo,Fu Li,Qingxin Guan,Jia Wang,Wei Li,Daniel C.W. Tsang

The conversion of biomass-derived levulinic acid (LA) to γ-valerolactone (GVL) offers a sustainable route for chemical production. Achieving efficient and selective electrocatalytic hydrogenation in aqueous media remains challenging due to limited supply of active hydrogen (H*) and selectivity–efficiency trade-off. Herein, we propose an electrochemical reconstruction strategy to generate Pb/PbO nanosheet electrocatalysts that can enable efficient aqueous-phase electrocatalytic hydrogenation of LA to GVL at room temperature, achieving a Faradaic efficiency of 59.2% and a yield rate of 22.2 mg h −1  cm −2 at –1.1 V vs. RHE, outperforming most previously reported aqueous LA-to-GVL systems. In-situ experiments reveal that the superior performance resulted from the synergy of Pb/PbO heterostructures and oxygen vacancies: heterostructures facilitated efficient electron transfer, oxygen vacancies optimized LA adsorption and H* activation, and a high surface area exposed additional active sites. Integration of a flow electrolyzer with an extraction–distillation unit provided continuous LA conversion and high-purity GVL recovery, demonstrating practical feasibility. This work provides a rational design of efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogenation of biomass-derived platform molecules.

Selective electroreduction of levulinic acid by controlling the crystalline structure of PbO on electrodes

Junbo Liu,Shengyang Tao

Electrocatalysis of biomass-derived platform molecules is an effective way to utilize biomass. Electrodes for the electrocatalytic hydrogenation of levulinic acid (LA) to selectively produce valeric acid (VA) have been extensively studied. Improving the electrocatalytic activity of electrodes for LA conversion is a meaningful and challenging task. This paper prepared β-PbO/Pb electrodes by laser processing. The higher adsorption of LA on the β-PbO surface was confirmed by in situ infrared and Raman spectra and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The β-PbO/Pb electrode exhibited higher electrocatalytic activity than the α-PbO/Pb and Pb electrodes. Complete conversion of LA was achieved at a much lower electrode potential of −1.4 V (vs RHE) with an 85 % yield of VA and greater than 90 % selectivity. In addition, laser processing technology provides a strategy for the rapid processing of electrodes to enable large-scale continuous production in industry.

In-situ carbon encapsulated Pb/PbO nanoparticles derived from spent lead paste for lead-carbon battery

Puqiang He,Yapeng He,Yi Yang,Hui Huang,Zhongcheng Guo

The sulfation and serious hydrogen evolution reaction render a substantial obstacle for the further development of lead-carbon batteries (LCBs). Herein, lead tartrate precursors derived from spent lead paste are pyrolyzed to in-situ synthesize a carbon encapsulated Pb/PbO nanoparticles , which are introduced as additives into the negative electrodes of LCBs. The in-situ formed carbon encapsulation Pb/PbO nanoparticles ensure the long-lasting inhibition of the hydrogen evolution reaction in the negative electrodes. The discharge capacity after the introduction of the composites is improved by 24 % compared with the control at 0.1C, and the cycle life is almost twice as long as the control. The remarkable hydrophilicity of the composites as 3D electro-osmotic pumps facilitates the absorption and transportation of electrolyte to the negative active materials. Additionally, the carbon encapsulated Pb/PbO nanoparticles could provide abundant nucleation sites for Pb/PbSO 4 conversion and reinforce the reversibility of the transformation between the substances. Benefiting the cooperative interaction between the multiple mechanisms in the composites, the sulfation and serious hydrogen evolution on the negative electrode are dramatically inhibited, consequently thus contributing to the admirable promotion of the overall performances of LCBs.

Interfacial effects of carbon nanotube-modified epoxy on PBO Fiber composites: Quasi-static and dynamic mechanical properties

Hua Zhang,Yuchen Xie,Ping Wang,Zhengqiang Lv,Dongmei Hu,Yan Zhang

PBO ( p -phenylene benzobisoxazole) fibers demonstrate considerable potential for application in various engineering fields. Nevertheless, their surface, which is excessively smooth, significantly impedes their properties. In this paper, PBO single-fiber reinforced composites were prepared by coating and modifying PBO fibers after oxygen plasma treatment using different concentrations of carbon nanotube-modified epoxy resin (EP/CNTs). The results show that the O/C ratio of the PBO fibers increases and structures such as epoxy/bisphenol are introduced after coating the surface of the PBO fibers with resin. The interfacial shear strength (IFSS) increases with the concentration of the coated EP/CNTs, up to 65.34 MPa. The dynamic mechanical properties of the PBO fibers increase after the coating modification treatments, and the highest tensile strength achieves 8.8 GPa at a strain rate of 1100 s −1 . This work provides a feasible and efficient strategy to modify the surface of PBO fibers, achieving a better combination between resin and component fibers.

Double-network cellulose-reinforced PBO insulating paper with synergistic flame-retardancy, mechanical robustness, and low dielectric constant

Tang Hongcai,Liu Chang,Liu Xiaolin,Jiang Jing,Hu Qingyi,Liu Xi,Tang Lin

Insulating paper is essential for the reliable operation of electronic and electrical equipment, yet achieving both high strength and flame retardancy remains challenging. Poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) nanofibrils (PNFs) possess inherent excellent thermal stability and flame retardancy, making them highly promising for applications in the electronic and electrical fields. In this work, cellulose acetate (CA) is innovatively introduced between PNFs to construct a double-network structure. High-performance CA-PNF insulating paper is then fabricated via sol–gel processing combined with hot-press molding. Owing to the strong hydrogen-bond interactions between CA and PNFs, the resulting CA-PNF insulating paper demonstrates excellent electrical insulation, high mechanical strength. The CA-PNF insulating paper with 10 wt% CA shows the highest volume resistivity (8.1 ⨯ 10 14 Ω·cm) and breakdown strength (131.7 kV/mm). It also exhibits a relatively low dielectric constant ( ε ) and high wave-transparent rate (| T | 2 ). The CA-PNF insulating paper with 15 wt% CA exhibits the highest performance. Its tensile strength and toughness are 279.4 MPa and 28.1 MJ·m −3 , representing improvements of 51.5% and 150.3% over the PNF insulating paper, respectively. In addition, it also shows excellent thermal conductivity, and flame retardancy, with high LOI and rapid self-extinguishing behavior. These features highlight its potential for applications in communication devices, high-performance transformers, and new-energy electric vehicles.

In-Situ Regeneration of Cellulose on PBO-AS Fiber Surface to Enhance Its Interfacial Property in Epoxy Resin

Wang Mengya,Zhu Peng,Ruan Fangtao,Zhang Huapeng

Due to the smooth and chemically inert surface of poly(p-phenylenebenzobisoxazole) (PBO) fibers, leading to poor interfacial properties in epoxy resin, which severely limits their applications in composite materials. The vast majority of research on PBO fiber interfaces is focused on PBO-HM type, while there is little research on PBO-AS type. Here, a modification strategy of in-situ regeneration of cellulose on PBO-AS fiber surface to enhance its interfacial properties in epoxy resin was proposed for the first time. First, PBO-AS fibers were oxidized and then underwent acyl chlorination, followed by chemical bonding with cellulose molecules. Second, cellulose molecules were in-situ regenerated on the fiber surface in different regeneration solvents. The results show that cellulose molecules were successfully in-situ regenerated on the fiber surface. Due to the physical and chemical properties of PBO-AS itself, the modification process inevitably damaged its mechanical properties, especially the oxidation process. In addition, the oxidation step slightly enhanced its interfacial strength in epoxy resin, while the rougher surface formed by cellulose regeneration was the main reason for the improvement of interfacial performance; the IFSS increased by 38.87% compared with untreated ones.

Bio-Inspired PBO Fiber-Based Composite Yarn With Hierarchical Dissipative Scale Structure for Impact Resistance Smart Protection Fabric

Guilin Wu,Bo Zhou,Junjie Pan,Jiaman Hu,Huanhuan Fan,Peng Xiao,Binchun Liu,Yiwei OuYang,Jize Liu,Guangming Cai

Protective textiles with advanced stimuli-responsive capabilities provided an all-around protection for the human body in a lightweight and flexible way, significantly endowing the highly intelligent modern society with unlimited potential in transforming lifestyles. However, achieving both perceptual capabilities and efficient protective performance remains a great challenge. Here, drawing inspiration from the classical armor shell of pangolin, a multiple interfacial crosslinking-induced strategy is presented to manufacture a coaxial hierarchical structure composite yarn. The core principle of this design involves constructing a hierarchical energy dissipated macro-/micro-/nano overlapped plate scale structure based on multiple interfacial cross-linking valence bonds between mica microplate fillers and GA-modified polyborosiloxane (GPBS) fillers (GPBS@TiO 2 -mica) and fiber substrates, which endows the composite yarn with excellent mechanical performances (strength of 193.7 MPa, toughness of 235.09 MJ m −3 ). The resulting fabric exhibits superior impact resistance (efficiency>74 %), excellent ballistic energy absorption capacity (7.94 kJ m −1 ), excellent structural stability, good pressure stimulus sensitivity (1.69 V kPa −1 ), and shows the application potential in monitoring human activities and health. This study provides a promising strategy for the future development of advanced wearable smart textiles with exceptional impact resistance.

Boosting interfacial adhesion in PBO fiber/epoxy composite by employing finely granular-structured polyaniline as an interfacial intensifier

Yang Chen,Rui Zhou,Dan Wu,Zhuoyue Liu,Yunfa Si,Dan Liu,Renxin Xu

Poor interfacial adhesion of composites deriving from the surface smoothness and inertness of poly (p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO) fibers severely constrains the extensive application of the fillers. Constructing the functional coating is generally considered a non-destructive and scalable strategy to simultaneously improve the asperity and activity of PBO fiber surfaces. Herein, we report a facile method to boost the interfacial adhesion in PBO fiber/epoxy composite by employing finely granular-structured polyaniline (PANI) as an interfacial intensifier. Via a mild and efficient in situ polymerization technique, the positively charged micron-scale PANI particles are uniformly anchored onto the negatively charged PBO fibers to form delicate leather-like surface layer containing substantial amino groups. Meanwhile, the resulting PBO fibers maintain excellent mechanical properties . Therefore, the PANI-coated PBO fiber/epoxy composite (PBO@PANI/EP) shows the significant increase in interfacial shear strength (41.0 MPa) and interlaminar shear strength (44.9 MPa), soaring by 60.16 % and 54.83 %, respectively. The debonding behavior and fracture surfaces confirm that the interfacial failure mechanism of PBO@PANI/EP converts from adhesive failure to both cohesive and substrate failure. The strategy in this work to modify PBO fiber surfaces for increasing the interfacial combination of composite is cost-effective and feasible to scale up.
