Upon herbivore attack, plants emit herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs). HIPVs can prime defences and resistance of intact plants. However, how HIPVs are decoded and translated into functional defence responses is not well understood, especially in long-lived woody plants. Here, we investigated the impact of the aromatic HIPV indole on defence-related early signalling, phytohormone accumulation, secondary metabolite biosynthesis and herbivore resistance in tea plants. We find that tea plants infested with tea geometrid caterpillars release indole at concentrations >450 ng*hr −1 . Exposure to corresponding doses of synthetic indole primes the expression of early defence genes involved in calcium (Ca 2+ ) signalling, MPK signalling and jasmonate biosynthesis. Indole exposure also primes the production of jasmonates and defence-related secondary metabolites. These changes are associated with higher herbivore resistance of indole-exposed tea plants. Chemical inhibition of Ca 2+ and jasmonate signalling provides evidence that both are required for indole-mediated defence priming and herbivore resistance. Our systematic assessment of the impact of indole on defence signalling and deployment shows that indole acts by boosting Ca 2+ signalling, resulting in enhanced jasmonate-dependent defence and resistance in a woody plant. Our work extends the molecular basis of HIPV-induced defence priming from annual plants to an economically important tree species.

Norway spruce is an important coniferous species in boreal forests. Root and stem rot diseases caused by the necrotrophic pathogen Heterobasidion parviporum threaten the wood production of Norway spruce which necessitates the search for durable control and management strategies. Breeding for resistant traits is considered a viable long-term strategy. However, identification of potential resistant traits and markers remains a major challenge. In this study, short-term disease resistance screening was conducted using 218 Norway spruce clones from 17 families. Disease resistance was evaluated based on the size of necrosis lesion length following infection with the pathogen. A subset of needles/branches from clones with small (partial resistant) or large (susceptible) lesions were used for terpene analysis and transcriptomic profiling. The results revealed that the content of monoterpene linalool and 1,8-cineole and their respective encoded genes were significantly more abundant and highly expressed in the partial resistant group. Furthermore, linalool and 1,8-cineole were demonstrated to have inhibitory effect on the growth of the pathogen H. parviporum , with morphological distortion of the hyphae. RNAseq analysis revealed that transcript of pathogen genes involved in the regulation of carbohydrate metabolism and stress responses were significantly decreased in presence of the terpenes. The results suggest the relevance of monoterpenes together with jasmonic acid precursor and some genes involved in phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, as constitutive tolerance factors for Norway spruce tolerance against necrotrophic pathogen. The high level of necrosis related cell death gene expression might be factors critical for host susceptibility and disease development.

Proanthocyanidins (PAs) are important metabolites that enhance freezing tolerance of plants. Actinidia arguta , especially freezing-tolerant germplasms, accumulate abundant PAs in dormant shoots and thereby enhance freezing tolerance, but the underlying mechanism is unknown. In this study, we used two A. arguta with contrasting cold-resistant phenotypes, KL and RB, to explore the mechanisms in response to cold tolerance. We determined that a leucoanthocyanidin reductase gene ( AaLAR1 ) was more highly expressed in freezing-tolerant KL than in freezing-sensitive RB. Moreover, overexpressing AaLAR1 in kiwifruit promoted PAs biosynthesis and enhanced cold tolerance. The AaLAR1 promoters of various A. arguta germplasms differ due to the presence of a 60-bp deletion in cold-tolerant genotypes that forms a functional binding site for MYC-type transcription factor. Yeast one-hybrid and two-hybrid, dual-luciferase reporter, bimolecular fluorescence complementation and coimmunoprecipitation assays indicated that the AaMYC2a binds to the MYC-core cis -element in the AaLAR1 promoter with the assistance of AaMYB5a, thereby promoting PAs accumulation in the shoots of cold-tolerant kiwifruit. We conclude that the variation in the AaLAR1 promoter and the AaMYC2a–AaMYB5a– AaLAR1 module shape freezing tolerance in A. arguta . The identification of a key structural variation in the AaLAR1 promoter offers a new target for resistance breeding of kiwifruit.

Potato, a cool-weather crop, emits volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which attract the specialist herbivore, Phthorimaea operculella , but also this herbivore's parasitic wasp, Trichogramma chilonis , an important biocontrol agent. What happens to this trophic system when heat stress challenges this agro-ecosystem? We studied how high temperature (HT) pre-treatments influence potato's VOC emissions and their subsequent effects on the preferences of insects, as evaluated in oviposition assays and Y-tube olfactometers. HT pre-stressed plants were less attractive to P. operculella adult moths, which were repelled by HT VOCs, but increased the recruitment of the parasitoid, T. chilonis , which were attracted. VOC emissions, including the most abundant constituent, ß-caryophyllene, were enhanced by HT treatments; some constituents elicited stronger behavioural responses than others. Transcripts of many genes in the biosynthetic pathways of these VOCs were significantly enhanced by HT treatment, suggesting increases in de novo biosynthesis. HT increased the plant's stomatal apertures, and exogenous applications of the hormone, ABA, known to suppress stomatal apertures, reduced leaf volatile emissions and affected the HT-altered plant attractions to both insects. From these results, we infer that HT stress affects this plant-insect interaction through its influence on VOC emissions, potentially decreasing herbivore ovipositions while increasing ovipositions of the parasitoid.

Control of plant virus diseases largely depends on the induced plant defence achieved by the external application of synthetic chemical inducers with the ability to modify defence-signalling pathways. However, most of the molecular mechanisms underlying these chemical inducers remain unknown. Here, we developed a chitosan-coated lentinan-loaded hydrogel and discovered how it protects plants from different virus infections. The hydrogel was synthesized by coating chitosan on the surface of the calcium alginate-lentinan (LNT) hydrogel (SL-gel) to form a CSL-gel. CSL-gels exhibit the capacity to prolong the stable release of lentinan and promote Ca 2+ release. Application of CSL-gels on the root of plants induces broad-spectrum resistance against plant viruses (TMV, TRV, PVX and TuMV). RNA-seq analysis identified that Nicotiana benthamiana calmodulin-like protein gene 3 ( NbCML3 ) is upregulated by the sustained release of Ca 2+ from the CSL-gel, and silencing and overexpression of NbCML alter the susceptibility and resistance of tobacco to TMV. Our findings provide evidence that this novel and synthetic CSL-gel strongly inhibits the infection of plant viruses by the sustainable release of LNT and Ca 2+ . This study uncovers a novel mode of action by which CSL-gels trigger NbCML3 expression through the stable and sustained release of Ca 2+ .

Thiourea has been employed for the modification of perovskite (PVK) films and demonstrates favorable modification effects. However, few studies have addressed the binding mode of thiourea (Th) with perovskite crystal facets. In this work, DFT calculations reveal that thiourea exhibits a perpendicular binding orientation to the (100) facet of perovskite, enabling the lone pair electrons of the S atom in the C═S bond to interact with undercoordinated Pb atoms. Meanwhile, due to charge transfer, the −NH2 group and the S atom form bonds with positively charged sites in perovskite. PL, TRPL, SCLC, and KPFM results indicate a significant reduction of defects in the PVK. Eventually, the Th-perovskite device yielded a notable improvement in performance: open-circuit voltage (VOC) increased from 1.12 to 1.16 V, short-circuit current density (JSC) rose from 24.48 to 25.13 mA/cm2, the fill factor (FF) reached 82.35%, and the power conversion efficiency (PCE) was enhanced from 21.90% to 24.01%. Importantly, the devices retained 80% of their initial efficiency after operating for 15 days under 50% relative humidity, demonstrating significant progress in moisture tolerance for practical applications. This work highlights that vertical binding of small organic molecules to the perovskite facet surface can more effectively enhance the performance of photovoltaics.

This study examines how varying ester group content in polycarboxylate superplasticizers (PCEs) affects the workability and adaptability of cement paste to external factors. PCE, a high-performance concrete admixture, is valued for its low dosage, high water reduction, tunability, and environmental benefits. However, conventional PCE struggles to adapt to diverse cement types and environmental conditions, often causing segregation and bleeding that impair concrete quality and durability. To overcome these limitations, we used graft copolymerization to integrate functional monomers into PCE’s main chain, enhancing its performance. A novel ester-functionalized PCE (e-PCE) was synthesized using vinyl-terminated polyethylene glycol monoallyl ether (EPEG) as a reactive macromonomer. By adjusting poly (ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PM) content, we produced e-PCE variants with different ester–ether ratios, characterized via molecular, adsorption, and rheological analyses. Results show that higher ester–ether ratios reduce initial dispersion but improve dispersion retention, with lower carboxyl density weakening adsorption capacity. Rheological, e-PCE reduces yield stress and plastic viscosity, enhancing flowability and thixotropy. Across cement types, e-PCE demonstrates superior adaptability and reduced sensitivity to cement type, water–cement ratio, and mud content, offering new insights and technical solutions for PCE application challenges.

In printable mesoporous perovskite solar cells (p-MPSCs), the perovskite films deposited from room-temperature solvents can effectively optimize the interface between the perovskite films and the electrodes. However, the low crystallization rate of perovskite thin films at room temperature often leads to the formation of nonphotoactive phases and an increase in the density of defect states. To accelerate the crystallization of perovskite films at room temperature, acetonitrile (ACN) is introduced as a cosolvent in the binary solvent system of 2-methoxyethanol/N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (2 ME/NMP). The high volatility and excellent wettability of ACN improve the crystallization rate of perovskite films and optimize their crystallinity. Furthermore, the introduction of the multifunctional additive Phenformin hydrochloride in the perovskite precursor solution further optimizes the crystallization process of the perovskite films, passivating deep defects in the perovskite films and forming high-quality perovskite films in the mesopores. The optimized p-MPSCs achieve a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.30%, which is the highest PCE for room temperature perovskite film p-MPSCs. Moreover, the optimized p-MPSCs exhibit negligible hysteresis and excellent reproducibility, showing no significant PCE degradation after being stored in air for over 3000 h.

Owing to the low water-cement ratio (less than 0.25) of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) materials, the system exhibits increased viscosity, diminished slurry flow, and challenges in pouring during the construction process, which compromise its workability. Consequently, the development of highly efficient viscosity-reducing polycarboxylate superplasticizer (PCE) is of paramount importance. In this study, we synthesized a series of viscosity-reducing polycarboxylate superplasticizers(JN-PCE) utilizing allyl polyethylene glycol ether (APEG), acrylic acid (AA), and sodium methallyl sulfonate (SMAS) as raw materials through the process of free radical polymerization. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, gel permeation chromatography, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were employed to characterize the materials. Subsequent evaluations of surface tension, fluidity, adsorption performance, and Marsh time demonstrated that these superplasticizers exhibited commendable dispersion and remarkable viscosity-reducing properties within a low water-cement ratio system. At a water-cement ratio of 0.18, the Marsh time of the JN-type PCE was reduced by 40% while maintaining the same fluidity, thereby underscoring the effective viscosity-reducing capabilities of the synthesized polycarboxylate superplasticizer.

Two-dimensional (2D) Dion–Jacobson (DJ) perovskites have been extensively investigated in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) owing to their superior stability and structural diversity. However, the efficiency is still limited by dielectric confinement and carrier localization in the transport process. Here, we introduced a new spacer cation, namely, 2,2′-oxybis(ethylamine) hydroiodide (OBEAI), which clearly clarified the fundamental physical properties of constructing 2D DJ perovskites to optimize charge transfer properties for high-performance 2D DJ PSCs. The strong electronegativity of OBEA enhanced the overlap of charge density in the spacing through its interaction with inorganic [PbI6]4– layers, promoting charge migration across confinement layers. In addition, the aggregation of strong electronegativity of OBEA and metal cations in precursor solutions enlarged the particle size, which reduced random nucleation sites, thereby inhibiting the production of low n-value perovskites (n ≤ 2). Thanks to these merits, the electrons’ transport of (OBEA)MA4Pb5I16 (MA: methylamine) was greatly promoted, which supported efficient charge extraction at the device level. The resultant (OBEA)MA4Pb5I16 solar cells delivered a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 14.33% and further improved to 18.81% based on (OBEA)FA4Pb5I16 (FA: formamidine) with exceptional stability of T90 (preserve 90% of the initial PCE) after 2000 h.

In this work, we report a novel two-dimensional (2D) (SrBr)2PbI4 perovskite layered architecture, which were formed by the reaction of strontium bromide (SrBr2), strontium iodide (SrI2) and lead iodide (PbI2). Formation of 2D (SrBr)2PbI4 was verified by small angle XRD peak at 6.4°, which corresponds to the layer distance of 13.78 Å. The best one of solar cells fabricated with Quasi-3D perovskite, (SrBr)2FA59Pb60I181 (n = 60), showed a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.46% and retained 95% of the initial PCE at 1000 h in the dry air. Further, the 2D (SrBr)2PbI4 as the surface passivation layer on the 3D FAPbI3 perovskite greatly reduced the defects at the perovskite/Spiro-OMeTAD interface, and the corresponding solar cells with FAPbI3/(SrBr)2PbI4 3D/2D structure achieved a PCE of 22.14% and over 90% retention of the original PCE at 1000 h. In short, this work provides an example of inorganic complex cations that can form 2D perovskites and achieve perovskite solar cells with high PCE and stabilization at the same time.

An over-thick MoSe2 layer and numerous voids at the absorbing layer inside and backside lead to a relatively low Jsc and PCE of CZTSSe solar cells. In previous studies, MoO2 and MoO3 sacrificial layers have been commonly used to eliminate those voids and reduce the thickness of MoSe2 layers. However, there is still no clarity about which one is more effective. In this work, we prepared MoO2 and MoO3 sacrificial layers on the surface of Mo-coated SLG substrates by air annealing and ammonia (NH3·H2O) etching, respectively. J–V testing shows that both MoO2 and MoO3 can effectively improve the Jsc and PCE of CZTSSe solar cells, wherein MoO3 is more effective. Comparative analysis shows that the electrical mechanism of Jsc and PCE improvement lies in the significant reduction of device series resistance (Rs). SEM images and XRD pattern results indicate that the reason for Rs decreasing is void elimination and MoSe2 layer thickness reduction from 600 nm to 270 nm after applying MoO3. With the aid of the MoO3 sacrificial layer, the PCE of the CZTSSe device increases from 7.51% to 9.58% (total area 0.21 cm2) without the MgF2 anti-reflection layer.
