PEEK composite resin with enhanced intumescent flame retardancy loaded with Octaphenylsilsesquioxane and nano calcium carbonate and its application in fibers

Xingyu Zhou,Rui Yu,Junhui Jiang,Junbo Dang,Jiashuang Luan,Guibin Wang,Mei Zhang

This study reported a novel strategy of introducing nano Calcium Carbonate (nCC) and Octaphenylsilsesquioxane (OPS) simultaneously into poly ether ether ketone (PEEK) as the intumescent flame retardants for the first time to address the melt flowage and drop in the fire. Good dispersion of nCC and OPS in the PEEK matrix was observed. The nanocomposites displayed lower thermal decomposition rate and higher residual chars compared with those of pristine PEEK. Cone calorimeter tests showed that the peak heat release rate, smoke production rate and the total smoke production of 5%OPS/5%nCC/PEEK decreased by 47.54%, 55.00% and 30.61%, respectively. Furthermore, the combustion mechanism of PEEK and its nanocomposite was investigated by TG-MS, which showed that nCC and OPS had a synergistic flame retardant effect. Finally, as an application verification, the PEEK nanocomposite fiber was prepared and its flame retardant properties were basically the same as the PEEK nanocomposite material, proving its huge application potential in high-performance flame retardant fabrics. This work is expected to pave the pathway about the novel eco-friendly flame retardancy and open a new avenue to develop PEEK nanocomposites.

L-arginine loading porous PEEK promotes percutaneous tissue repair through macrophage orchestration

Tong Zhao,Xingdan Liu,Zhuangzhuang Chu,Jing Zhao,Dongya Jiang,Xiaohua Dong,Ziyi Lu,Kelvin W.K. Yeung,Xuanyong Liu,Liping Ouyang

Infection and poor tissue repair are the key causes of percutaneous implantation failure. However, there is a lack of effective strategies to cope with due to its high requirements of sterilization, soft tissue healing, and osseointegration. In this work, l -arginine (L-Arg) was loaded onto a sulfonated polyetheretherketone (PEEK) surface to solve this issue. Under the infection condition, nitric oxide (NO) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) are produced through catalyzing L-Arg by inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and thus play a role in bacteria sterilization. Under the tissue repair condition, L-Arg is catalyzed to ornithine by Arginase-1 (Arg-1), which promotes the proliferation and collagen secretion of L929 and rBMSCs. Notably, L-Arg loading samples could polarize macrophages to M1 and M2 in infection and tissue repair conditions, respectively. The results in vivo show that the L-Arg loading samples could enhance infected soft tissue sealing and bone regeneration. In summary, L-Arg loading sulfonated PEEK could polarize macrophage through metabolic reprogramming, providing multi-functions of antibacterial abilities, soft tissue repair, and bone regeneration, which gives a new idea to design percutaneous implantation materials.

Strontium ranelate incorporated 3D porous sulfonated PEEK simulating MC3T3-E1 cell differentiation

Sun Yingxiao,Liu Xingdan,Tan Ji,Lv Dan,Song Wengang,Su Rui,Li Ling,Liu Xuanyong,Ouyang Liping,Liao Yun

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) has been used as an implant material because it has similar mechanical properties to natural bone. However, inferior osseointegration and bioinertness hamper the clinical application of PEEK. In this study, the surfaces of sulfonated three-dimensional (3D) PEEK porous structures were loaded with different concentrations of strontium ranelate, a compound commonly used in the treatment or prevention of osteoporosis by promoting bone formation and inhibiting bone resorption. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy was used to characterize the topography of the structures, elemental carbon, oxygen and strontium contents were measured by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and surface zeta potentials and water-contact angle were also measured. The results indicated that strontium ranelate was successfully loaded onto the 3D porous structures. In vitro cellular results showed that strontium ranelate-treated sulfonated PEEK (SP-SR) strengthened the adhesion of MC3T3-E1 cells. The activity of alkaline phosphatase, collagen secretion and extracellular matrix mineralization deposition of MC3T3-E1 cells were also improved on the surface of SP-SR. These results indicate that SP-SR could serve a new implant candidate for surgical treatment.

Surface-activated 3D-printed PEEK implant enhances anti-infection and osteogenesis

Zhaolong Wang,Zhou Yu,Zhaoyi Wang,Shifen Li,Liang Song,Tiesong Xu,Guocheng Shen,Yuchen Wang,Tingben Huang,Xiaofei Dong,Guoli Yang,Changyou Gao

With the advantage of remarkable mechanical processing ability without losing its strength , polyetheretherketone (PEEK) based medical devices have been drawing great attention in orthopedic treatments. However, its limited osseointegration capacity and susceptibility to bacterial colonization-induced infections pose a considerable risk of implant failure. Current methods of antimicrobial and osteogenic functionalization frequently exhibit conflicting outcomes. The antimicrobial functionalization of implants usually leads to cytotoxicity and histotoxicity, adversely affecting the connection with surrounding tissues, whereas the osteogenic functionalization may inadvertently promote bacterial adhesion and biofilm development. Therefore, it is highly demanded to endow the PEEK implants with antibacterial and osseointegration properties simultaneously. In this study, 3D-printed PEEK implants were surface modified with hyperbranched poly- l -lysine (HBPL) via physisorption (PEEK- a -HBPL) and chemical grafting (PEEK- g -HBPL), respectively, which were demonstrated by attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, water contact angle, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Remarkably, both the PEEK- a -HBPL and PEEK- g -HBPL exhibited significantly improved antibacterial efficacy against S. aureus and E. coli , while their osteogenesis ability was not affected but even promoted in vitro . In an in vivo bone-infection and implantation model in rats, significantly reduced surrounding tissue inflammation and larger new bone formation were observed in both the PEEK- a -HBPL and PEEK- g -HBPL groups compared to the untreated PEEK group. This comprehensive study lays a foundation for the advancing of organic orthopedic implant materials, offering potential solutions to the pressing issues of osseointegration deficits and implant-related infections.

Peek@ZIF-8(CEL) as a Novel Bone Implant for Large Defect Repair and Enhanced Bone Healing via a Long-Term Stable Bioactive Releaser

Yongmei Ge,Liqiu Hu,Jiayi Liu,Fenbo Ma,Jiarong Zhang,Yansong Wang,Bin Tang,Shuaishuai Cao

The repair of large bone defects poses a significant challenge in orthopedics. Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is a promising bone substitute, while it suffers a lack of bioactivity. Although several studies have been performed to further improve the bioactivities of PEEK by various surface modifications, PEEK offering long-term, multifaceted biofunctionalities remains still desired. In this study, we introduced metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), specifically ZIF-8 loaded with celecoxib (ZIF-8(CEL)), onto the PEEK surface through dopamine adhesion. The resulting PEEK@ZIF-8(CEL) aims to achieve long-term stable release of Zn ions and CEL for enhanced bone integration. Material characterization and biological experiments confirmed the successful integration of ZIF-8(CEL) onto PEEK and its positive biomedical effects, including creating a positive bone immunological environment and promoting bone growth. This study demonstrates the potential of PEEK@ZIF-8(CEL) as a novel repair material for large bone defects, offering a promising alternative in orthopedic applications.

High Thermally Conductive and Electrical Insulating “Sandwich” Structured Composites Fabricated by Hot-pressing of PEEK Film Combined with fBNNSs@fMWCNT/SPEEK Membrane via Electrospinning

Fan Yang,Xiunan Li,Ye Sun,Wanying Yang,Dong Jiang,Jianxin Mu,Guibin Wang,Yanhua Yang

With the rapid development of 5   G technology, the heat dissipation of electronic devices has become an important challenge. It is particularly essential to construct efficient thermal transfer networks in order to obtain advanced materials with superior thermal conductivity as well as excellent electrical insulating properties. In this work, poly (ether ether ketone) (PEEK) was sulfonated to achieve its solubility for electrospinning. Multi-scale hybrid fillers containing hydroxylated boron nitride nanosheets (fBNNSs) and carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (fMWCNT) are aligned along the direction of sulfonated PEEK (SPEEK) fibers during electrospinning process where fMWCNT with high aspect ratio can be used as mediators to connect the dispersed fBNNSs resulting in synergistic effect to extensively improve the thermally conductive performance. The hydrogen bond interaction among sulfonic acid group, carboxy groups and hydroxy groups from the matrix and modified fillers can not only make the fillers disperse uniformly but also improve the interfacial properties, thus reducing the phonon scattering at the interface efficiently, to enhance the thermal conductivity significantly at relatively low filler loading. fBNNSs@fMWCNT/SPEEK composite exhibits excellent thermal conductivity (λ) of 5.25   W/(m·K) when the filler content reached by 26   wt% with the ratio of fBNNSs to fMWCNT of 25:1(wt:wt). Under the composition above, the excellent electrical insulating property (2.54×10 15 Ω·cm) is achieved as well. Furthermore, fBNNSs@fMWCNT/SPEEK fiber membrane can be used as thermally conductive filler to construct a "sandwich" structured composite with PEEK film. When the mass ratio is 1:1, the λ of composite is 3.1   W/(m·K), which is 1200% higher than that of PEEK. This work provides better understanding of PEEK based thermal conductive composites for the prospective application of thermal management materials in electrical insulating related fields.

Simvastatin delivery on PEEK for bioactivity and osteogenesis enhancements

Li-Jun Deng,Yan-Lin Wu,Xian-Hua He,Ke-Nan Xie,Lu Xie,Yi Deng

A strategy developed for obtaining positive cellular responses remains to be focused in the filed of functional biomimetics. In this study, a hydrogel covered simvastatin-loaded polyetheretherketone (PEEK) bio-composites was constructed with the purpose of bone tissue regeneration therapy. Briefly, a three-dimensional (3D) porous structure was fabricated on PEEK surface; then the substrate was functionalized with the poly(L-lactic acid)/simvastatin porous film and hyaluronic acid hydrogel subsequently. In vitro cell attachment, proliferation, and cytoskeletal observation experiments reveal that our scaffolds show better bio-affinity due to the layer of hyaluronic acid hydrogel compared with control. Furthermore, the alkaline phosphatase activity, calcium mineral deposition evaluation, and gene expression for osteogenic potential all exhibit that the superior osteogenic differentiation of MC3T3-E1 pre-osteoblasts on our scaffolds. Therefore, our PEEK samples loaded with simvastatin and covered with hyaluronic acid hydrogel hold great potential in clinical applications for bone repair.

Evaluation of tribological and biological properties of TaB2/PEEK composite coatings prepared by electrodeposition

Suyuan Huang,Lin Cao,Wei Li,Zhidan Lin,Peng Zhang

It is well-known that a lower wear rate, favorable mechanical properties, and limited inflammatory response are critical factors in determining the long-term service of orthopedic implants. In this study, we prepare TaB 2 /PEEK coatings by electrophoretic deposition (EPD) of borated tantalum (TaB 2 ) and polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK) particles on a pure titanium plate (TA2). Nanoindenter, reciprocating ball-on-disc tester, and in vitro biological experiments were used to investigate the effects of TaB 2 particles on the mechanical properties, tribological properties, and biological properties of composite coatings. The results demonstrate that a small amount of TaB 2 particles were equally dispersed in the PEEK matrix, and the mechanical properties are improved, resulting in better tribological properties of the coating. In particular, the wear rate of P-TB-3 coating in the simulated body fluid (SBF) was 72% lower than that of the PEEK coating, with a friction coefficient (COF) of 0.164 and a wear rate of 1.45 × 10 −6 mm 3 ·N −1 m −1 , respectively. Furthermore, the P-TB-3 surface boosted Raw264.7 macrophage adherence and proliferation, with a potential to promote Raw264.7 macrophage transition to the M2 phenotype. These results suggest that the P-TB-3 coating prepared by EPD is considered as a promising implant replacement material.

Enhancing Resistance-Welded Joints Between 7075 Al Alloy and CF/PEEK via Thermoplastic Interface Strengthening

Jingsheng Yu,Bo Zhang,Wei Jin,Wei Ji,Renxin Xu

This study demonstrates effective resistance welding between 7075 aluminum (Al) alloy and carbon fiber/polyether ether ketone (CF/PEEK) composites by combining chemical etching and silanization surface treatments with a polyetherimide (PEI) thermoplastic layer. The effects of this hybrid treatment on the bonding at the 7075 Al alloy/PEI thermoplastic layer interface and the mechanical performance of the welded joints are systematically investigated. Chemical etching created a micro-nano rough surface that enhanced mechanical interlocking and increased hydroxyl group content from 12.7 mol% to 28.5 mol%. Subsequent silanization grafted amino (  NH 2 ) groups onto the 7075 Al alloy surface, enabling hydrogen bonding with the PEI thermoplastic layer. Under the synergistic effects of mechanical interlocking and hydrogen bonding, interfacial bonding is significantly enhanced, increasing the lap shear strength (LSS) of the joint from 0.2 to 24.6 MPa. The fracture failure mode of the welded joint changes from the interfacial failure of the 7075 Al alloy and PEI thermoplastic layer to the interlaminar failure of carbon fiber tearing in the heating element. Summary A new approach enables effective resistance welding of 7075 Al alloy and CF/PEEK composites. A hybrid surface treatment enhances 7075 Al alloy bonding with PEI thermoplastic layer. The hybrid surface treatment induces mechanical interlocking and hydrogen bonding effects. The synergistic effects can significantly enhance the performance of welded joints.

Drug-loaded/grafted peptide-modified porous PEEK to promote bone tissue repair and eliminate bacteria

Xianhua He,Yi Deng,Yue Yu,Hao Lyu,Li Liao

Bone restoration and related infection in bone defect repair remain thorny problems in clinical practice. Herein, a drug-loaded (chlorogenic acid, CGA)/grafted peptide (BFP) hydrogel system supported on a sulfonated polyetheretherketone (SPEEK) surface is constructed to address the problem of large-scale defects and related infections in clinical bone implantation. Briefly, the encapsulated chlorogenic acid is released during hydrogel degradation and can inhibit the growth of bacteria and provide a bacteria-free environment for new bone formation. In vitro experiments and cell adhesion/proliferation evaluation reveal that the chlorogenic acid-sodium alginate-peptide bridging system shows better bioaffinity than the control groups due to the BFP peptide on the surface of the hydrogel. In addition, bacterial experiments suggest that the released chlorogenic acid has excellent antibacterial activity against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. Therefore, the hydrogel bridging system has a prospective application in clinical applications for bone repair.

Nanoscale Poly(Dopamine)-Modified ZIF-8 Particle Hybrid Solvent-Resistant Thin Film Nanocomposite (TFN) Membranes via Interfacial Polymerization on a Robust Polyether Ether Ketone (PEEK) Substrate

Qiuyang Huang,Zhuofan Gao,Pengcheng Yan,Zhihui Zhou,Hongdan Wu,Jiazheng Li,Wei Han,Zhuo Huang,Xia Chen,Xian Zhou,Yuan Xiang,Lei Chen,Zeyu Fan,Ziling Peng,Qi Lu,Ji Wu

This study introduces an innovative approach to fabricating a poly ether ketone (PEEK)-based thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) nanofiltration membrane. Ultrafine polydopamine (PDA) modified zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoparticles were integrated into the polyamide (PA) layer through a process of interfacial polymerization. The impacts of PDA@ZIF-8 nanoparticle loading on composite membranes were examined, and their separation performances with different solvents and small molecular organics with various molecular weights and charges were evaluated. The PDA modification is credited with inducing a thinner, less crosslinked PA layer, culminating in the formation of a selective barrier that is both loose and ultra-thin, improving the separation capabilities of membranes. The TFN-3 membrane, with a 0.01 wt% loading of PDA@ZIF-8 nanoparticles, emerged as a standout, demonstrating notably enhanced hydrophilicity. The pure water and organic solvent permeances through the TFN-3 membrane were remarkably enhanced, with recorded values of 6.19 ± 0.26 L h −1 m −2 bar −1 for pure water and 3.44 ± 0.21 L h −1 m −2 bar −1 for methanol. Furthermore, the TFN-3 membrane showcased impressive molecular retention in ethanol solutions for compounds with a molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) of 464 g/mol. The PEEK-based TFN-3 membrane also exhibited exceptional creep resistance, ensuring consistent performance during long-term testing. In a 5-day ethanol separation test, the TFN-3 membrane maintained a Rose Bengal (RB) retention rate exceeding 99%, underscoring its stability and reliability. The newly developed PEEK-based TFN membrane not only promises robust solvent resistance and stability but also delivers efficient separation and purification capabilities. It holds great potential for offering effective and sustainable solutions across a spectrum of industries, particularly in pharmaceutical production and chemical processing, where the separation, recovery, and purification of solvents are paramount.

Highly conductive and stable hybrid ionic cross-linked sulfonated PEEK for fuel cell

Juanjuan Han,Ying Wu,Jing Pan,Yanqiu Peng,Ying Wang,Chen Chen,Qiyun Pan,Bo Xie,Nian Zhao,Yu Wang,Juntao Lu,Li Xiao,Lin Zhuang

An ideal proton exchange membrane for fuel-cell application should possess excellent dimensional stability, high ionic conductivity and inexpensiveness. Introducing cross-links into the polymer structures is a popular strategy to alleviate the tradeoff between swelling ratio and ionic conductivity of high ion exchange capacity proton exchange membranes. However, the cross-links in these membranes will block the transport of H + , resulting in unfavorable decrease of conductivity. Here we report a systematic study of ac SPEEK-S x membranes with alkyl chain attached ionic cross-links to demonstrate how the unique cross-links can improve both the conductivity and swelling behavior of the materials. Compared to the conventional SPEEK , in addition to high anti-oxidative stability, the ionic conductivity and swelling behavior of the ac SPEEK-S x samples are significantly improved. A high proton conductivity of 101.2 mS cm −1 and a low swelling degree of 15.0% are observed in the ac SPEEK-S 6 membrane at the temperature of 80 °C. Based on the high-performance ac SPEEK-S 6 sample, a peak power density of 750 mW cm −2 is achieved at 60 °C, which is similar or superior to those of Nafion 112 (710 mW cm −2 ) under the same measurement conditions.
