Per - and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) constitute a class of persistent environmental pollutants that pose significant risks to ecosystems and human health. This study demonstrates the rational design and synthesis of amphiphilic covalent organic frameworks (COFs) for the efficient and selective removal of PFAS from aqueous environments. Three COF variants, TpPa-COF, TbPa-CF₃-COF, and TpPa-CF₃-COF, were constructed via Schiff base condensation, incorporating tailored hydrophobic and hydrophilic functional groups. Among these, the amphiphilic TpPa-CF₃-COF exhibited exceptional PFOS adsorption capacity (443 mg/g), rapid kinetics, and outstanding reusability, maintaining over 95% removal efficiency in complex natural water matrices. Mechanistic studies revealed that synergistic fluorophilic (F F) and intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions drive the highly selective adsorption process. This work extends beyond presenting a superior adsorbent by elucidating the underlying synergistic adsorption mechanism, which provides both a strategic approach to COFs engineering and a general design principle for addressing amphiphilic pollutants in practical water treatment.

Industrial production, environmental monitoring, and clinical medicine put forward urgent demands for high-performance gas sensors. Two-dimensional (2D) materials are regarded as promising gas-sensing materials owing to their large surface-to-volume ratio, high surface activity, and abundant surface-active sites. However, it is still challenging to achieve facilely prepared materials with high sensitivity, fast response, full recovery, and robustness in harsh environments for gas sensing. Here, a combination of experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations is performed to explore the application of tellurene in gas sensors. The prepared tellurene nanoflakes via facile liquid-phase exfoliation show an excellent response to NO2 (25 ppb, 201.8% and 150 ppb, 264.3%) and an ultralow theory detection limit (DL) of 0.214 ppb at room temperature, which is excellent compared to that of most reported 2D materials. Furthermore, tellurene sensors present a fast response (25 ppb, 83 s and 100 ppb, 26 s) and recovery (25 ppb, 458 s and 100 ppb, 290 s). The DFT calculations further clarify the reasons for enhanced electrical conductivity after NO2 adsorption because of the interfacial electron transfer from tellurene to NO2, revealing an underlying explanation for tellurene-based gas sensors. These results indicate that tellurene is eminently promising for detecting NO2 with superior sensitivity, favorable selectivity, an ultralow DL, fast response-recovery, and high stability.

In this study, we analyze the influence of the pore structure of an SBA-15 particle on the light emission from its inner adsorbed quantum dots (QDs) and outer light-emitting diode (LED) chips. It is found that the particle features of a high refractive index, comparable feature size of pore structure, and lower amount of QD adsorption help with QD light extraction, demonstrating a mechanism to suppress QD light propagating through pores and thus reducing the reabsorption loss. We consequently developed highly efficient QD white LEDs with wet-mixing QD/SBA-15 nanocomposite particles (NPs) by further optimizing the packaging methods and the introduced NP mass ratio. The LEDs demonstrated a record luminous efficacy (the ratio of luminous flux to electrical power) of 206.8 (entrusted test efficiency of 205.8 lm W–1 certificated by China National Accreditation Service) and 137.6 lm W–1 at 20 mA for white LEDs integrating only green QDs and green–red QD color convertors, respectively, with improved operating stability. These results are comparable to conventional phosphor-based white LEDs, which can be a starting point for white LEDs only using QDs as convertors toward commercialization in the near future.

Adsorption by activated carbon (AC) is a practical approach to removing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from water, but designing a highly efficient carbon for the adsorption of target PFAS using a low-cost strategy remains a challenge. Herein, we report that bamboo-biochar prepared by vacuum carbonization and steam activation serves as an alternative adsorbent to commercial AC for PFAS removal. The optimal biochar (V500A) exhibited an adsorption capacity of 1.23 and 0.77 mmol/g for perfluorooctanesulfonate and 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate (6:2 FTS), respectively, which outperforms the previously reported biochar, and the adsorption rate was 2.4 times higher than that of the commercial AC F400. An excellent adsorption performance by V500A in electroplating wastewater and drinking water demonstrates its versatile applicability. Pore reaming played a major role in the adsorption enhancement, and the hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions were mainly responsible for PFAS adsorption. In addition, pyrolysis regeneration at a mild temperature (500 °C) can effectively reactivate spent biochar. The results of this study are expected to provide a feasible pore-designing approach to achieving the preparation of cost-effective biochar-based adsorbents for PFAS removal from contaminated water.

Nanofiltration (NF) effectively removes per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from water but struggles with short-chain PFAS (i.e., those containing less than 6 perfluorinated carbons) due to size exclusion inefficiency. In this study, we developed layer-by-layer assembled NF membranes with PDADMAC/PSS terminal bilayers varying in chain lengths, hydrophilicity, and charge, and systematically assessed their removal of 16 representative PFAS species. The mechanisms between long-chain and short-chain PFAS were investigated and optimal strategies for enhancing PFAS selectivity were developed. Results demonstrated that the (PDADMAC/PSS) 3 membrane achieved the highest removal (86.1%-98.1%) for short-chain PFAS, including PFBA-PFHpA (C4-C6), PFBS (C4), PFMOPrA (C3), PFMOBA (C4), and GenX (C5), while effectively removing (>99.9%) long-chain counterparts (≥C7). As feed water pH increased from 3.5 to 9.0, average PFAS rejection rose from 16.6% to 32.0%, revealing more negative charged membrane surface endow stronger electrostatic repulsion, particularly for short-chain anionic PFAS. In addition, we also tested the PFAS removal efficacy of (PDADMAC/PSS) 3 membrane using real sewage plant effluent. Compared to the pristine membrane, the (PDADMAC/PSS) 3 membrane exhibited improved removal for most PFAS, with removal efficiencies ranging from 82.5% for PFOA to 96.7% for PFOS. The most significant improvements were observed in C4 compounds like PFBA and PFBS (increased by 6.0-11.5%). Our study suggests that PFAS removal efficiency by NF highly depends on size exclusion, with short-chain anionic PFAS more likely affected by electrostatic repulsion. Membrane surface manipulation can enhance selectivity, aiding in predicting NF treatment effectiveness for specific PFAS compounds.

● The SPE quantification of 22 PFAS in water is interfered by coexisting MNPs. ● MNPs may cause PFAS overestimation on Day 1–7 but underestimation on Day 28. ● PFAS class and chain length affect the magnitude of MNP-induced interference. ● Nanoplastics show stronger recovery enhancement than microplastics for PFCAs. Micro(nano)plastics (MNPs) are ubiquitous in aquatic environments and can act as vectors for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). However, the extent to which MNP–PFAS interactions influence the analytical recovery of PFAS over time remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the impact of polystyrene particles (100 nm and 3 μm) on the recovery of 22 PFAS across four classes from water over 1, 7 and 28 days. The results revealed that MNPs introduce time-dependent and compound specific biases in PFAS recovery. For perfluorinated carboxylic acids (PFCAs) and sulfonic acids (PFSAs), recoveries were initially enhanced on Day 1 (76.6%–122% vs. control 58.7%–98.6%) and Day 7 (86.3%–127% vs. control 84.5%–121%), followed by a decline to levels comparable to or slightly below controls on Day 28 (55.8%–127% vs. control 56.4%–127%). Nanoplastics (NPs) induced greater enhancement than microplastics for PFCAs, whereas both particle sizes exhibited comparable effects for PFSAs. Perfluorooctane sulfonamide derivatives and fluorotelomer sulfonic acids showed a distinct pattern of an initial enhancement on Day 1 followed by a rapid return to control levels on Day 7. These temporal patterns indicate an evolution from weak, reversible adsorption to stronger binding over time, which may lead to overestimation of PFAS concentrations at early exposure stage and underestimation after prolonged contact. Molecular mechanics calculations provided a preliminary molecular-level rationale for the observed compound-specific differences, with a significant correlation between the adsorption energy and NP-induced recovery enhancement for 20 neutral PFAS ( ρ = −0.58 , p = 0.007 ) , although they reflect intrinsic adsorption affinities on a model surface in vacuum rather than absolute aqueous-phase values. These findings highlight the need to consider MNP coexistence in PFAS monitoring and underscore the importance of further studies under environmentally realistic conditions. Given the global prevalence of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), notable for their environmental persistence, bioaccumulation potential, and toxicity, in consumer products, water sources, and living organisms, the development of robust analytical techniques for their accurate quantification in complex matrices is imperative. Here, a novel quaternary ammonium-fluorinated dual-site magnetic microporous organic network (QM-MFMON) is developed for efficiently capturing PFASs. The cooperative integration of electrostatic interaction and fluorous affinity within QM-MFMON facilitates high-selectivity and ultrafast PFASs capture. QM-MFMON is integrated into a workflow comprising magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) followed by UPLC-MS/MS to rapidly detect trace PFASs in biological fluids, food, and environmental water with high sensitivity and reliability. This platform demonstrates a wide range of detection (0.5-5000 ng L −1 ), low limit of detection (0.01-0.03 ng L −1 ), high enrichment efficiency (91.5-97.4), good recoveries (80.2-112.4%), and stable reusability. QM-MFMON is expected to serve as a high-performance adsorbent for MSPE to facilitate the rapid, selective, and ultrasensitive analysis of PFASs in complex matrices.

The biotoxicity of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) to aquatic organisms has been widely concerned. However, studies on toxic effects of PFASs are usually evaluated directly by using laboratory exposure rather than laboratory validation based on data obtained in the field. In this study, wild catfish ( Silurus meridinalis ) was explored on the relationship between PFASs bioaccumulation and lipid disorders. Nine and thirteen lipid metabolites were significantly associated with perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and 6:2/8:2Cl-PFESA (trade name F-53B) exposures, respectively; and the correlated lipid metabolites were the fatty acid (FA) and conjugates, FA esters, steroids, and glycerophosphate subclasses. The effects of PFASs on lipid metabolism of fish and its mechanism were further analyzed through exposure experiments. Zebrafish ( Danio rerio ) of different sexes underwent PFOS and F-53B exposures for 21 days at 100 ng/L and 100 μg/L. By determining gene expression levels, hepatic lipid contents, and histopathological change, the adverse effects order on lipid metabolism in male or female was 100 μg/L F-53B > 100 μg/L PFOS > 100 ng/L F-53B > 100 ng/L PFOS; the stress response in male was more intensive than that in female. PFOS and F-53B activated the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor pathway, promoting the processes of FA and total cholesterol (T-CHO) transport, FA β -oxidation, FA synthesis, and finally induced FA and T-CHO transportation from blood into liver, then accelerated FA to FA ester transformation, and CHO into steroids. Laboratory experiments confirmed the field analysis. This study innovatively explored the adverse effects of PFOS and F-53B on lipid metabolism and their mechanisms at field and laboratory levels, highlighting concerns regarding PFASs health risks.

A systematic examination was conducted for the first time of a wide carbon-chain range of per- and polyfluoroalkyl compounds (PFASs) in 83 samples of edible vegetable and animal oils from Guiyang, China. The occurrence and levels of 18 PFASs in seven types of edible oil were analysed. Analytes were determined based on a simplified, sensitive and reliable solvent extraction and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method. Ten target PFASs were found and the most frequently detected compounds with maximum concentration were PFOS (88%, 1.93 ng g–1), PFNA (55.4%; 6.76 ng g–1), PFHxS (39.8%; 0.36 ng g–1), and PFOA (16.9%; 0.15 ng g–1), respectively. The total PFASs concentrations ranged from 0.02 to 6.76 ng g–1, with a mean of 0.94 ng g–1. Significant differences of occurrence between vegetable oils and animal oils were demonstrated based on comparative analysis of the existing data. The investigation results showed that the effect of production reductions of PFOS and PFOA by regulatory was also reflected in edible oils. The dietary intakes of PFOS and PFOA for adults were estimated, which were lower than the available tolerable daily intake (TDI). Because of the global lack of food regulatory thresholds for most per- or polyfluoroalkyl compounds, it was difficult to draw any conclusion at this stage as to how human health is affected through exposure to these compounds. The baseline information of this study will assist in guiding the direction for future investigations and monitoring studies on occurrence, fate and human health-effect research of PFASs.

Au nanoparticles (Au NPs)-decorated SO 3 H-cofunctionalized porous silica particles was prepared as a novel mixed-mode stationary phase and used in Per aqueous liquid chromatography (PALC) mode. The obtained stationary phase was characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR spectra, and transmission electron microscopy. To evaluate the retention behavior, the effect of a variety of chromatographic factors on the retention of different types of solutes was investigated. The obtained column exhibited a hydrophobic interaction/cation-exchange mixed-mode retention mechanism, and a typical PALC characteristic was observed in water-rich mobile phases. When the particle size of Au NPs was 10–20 nm, the analytes had a sharp peak shape and the column pressure was also moderate. Compared with the hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) and C 18 column, some hydrophilic compounds such as six monosaccharides were baseline separated with the enhanced resolution of the obtained column under the PALC mode. Moreover, the efficiency of the Au-S/SO 3 H-SiO 2 -2 column was significantly higher than that of the HILIC column. PALC mode was a green annlysis method and suitable for the replacement of hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography.

A novel mixed-mode monolithic stationary phase based on bonding of 4,5-imidazoledicarboxy acid to the surface of an organic-silica hybrid monolith was prepared and characterized. Satisfactory characteristics in terms of mechanical stability, permeability and reproducibility of the resultant monolithic column were achieved. A typical per aqueous chromatographic behavior was observed in water-rich mobile phases. The resultant monolithic column was applied for the efficient resolution of various polar and hydrophilic compounds under per aqueous or reversed-phase chromatographic conditions, which successfully demonstrated its suitability for the analysis of these polar compounds in highly aqueous mobile phases. The highest column efficiency obtained for the amines was 149 000 N m−1. The experimental results showed that the mixed-mode mechanism of hydrophobic and ion-exchange interactions was involved in the separation under the given conditions. The successful applications suggested that the mixed-mode organic-silica hybrid monolithic column could offer a wide range of retention behaviors and flexible selectivities toward polar compounds, achieving various target separations.

This study investigates the removal efficiency of anionic, cationic, and zwitterionic per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) by nanofiltration (NF) in the presence of three representative natural organic matter (NOM) types: bovine serum albumin (BSA), humic acid (HA), and sodium alginate (SA). In particular, effects of PFAS molecular structure and coexisting NOM on the transmission and adsorption efficiency of PFAS during NF treatment were analyzed. The results indicate that NOM types dominate membrane fouling behavior despite the coexistence of PFAS. SA exhibits the most significant fouling propensity, resulting in maximum water flux decline. NF effectively removed both ether and precursor PFAS. The effects of the three typical NOM on the membrane-passing behavior of PFAS were consistent for all PFAS investigated. Generally, PFAS transmission decreased in the order of SA-fouled > pristine > HA-fouled > BSA-fouled, indicating that the presence of HA and BSA enhanced PFAS removal while SA declined. Furthermore, reduced PFAS transmission was observed with increased perfluorocarbon chain length or molecular weight (MW), regardless of the presence or type of the NOM. The impacts of NOM on PFAS filtration diminished when the PFAS van der Waals radius was > 4.0 Å, MW > 500 Da, polarization > 20 Å, or LogKow > 3. These findings suggest that both steric repulsion and hydrophobic interactions, especially the former, play important roles in PFAS rejection by NF. This study provides insights into the specific applicability and performance of membrane-based processes for eliminating PFAS during drinking and wastewater treatments , and highlighting the importance of coexisting NOM.
