Graphene oxide modified semi-aromatic polyamide thin film composite membranes for PPCPs removal

Jue Wang,Nana Li,Yu Zhao,Shengji Xia

The incorporation of nano-materials in thin film composite (TFC) membrane has been explored in order to improve permeability/selectivity and to enhance anti-fouling properties in many water treatment processes. In this study, graphene oxide (GO) was embedded into the semi-aromatic polyamide active layer of a TFC membrane via interfacial polymerization (IP) reaction between the piperazine (PIP) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC) monomers. The properties of TFC membranes were thoroughly characterized using FTIR, FE-SEM, AFM, and water contact angle measurements. The permeation and separation performance of these membranes were also examined. The in-house fabricated PA/GO TFC membranes exhibited much higher flux (12.78 ± 0.36 L/m 2 ·h·bar) than that of the pristine PA TFC membranes (8.94 ± 0.42 L/m 2 ·h·bar) with a slightly increased salt rejection. Furthermore, the rejection of three target PPCPs compounds, i.e., paracetamol, norfloxacin and sulfamethoxazole was investigated using these TFC membranes with different GO loadings. The addition of GO offered a significant improvement in PPCPs rejection as a result of favorable change in membrane hydrophilicity, surface morphology and surface charge. This study offers a facile and effective route to fabricate high performance semi-aromatic PA TFC membranes incorporated with functional nano-materials.

Simple and Rapid Detection of Ibuprofen─A Typical Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products─by a Liquid Crystal Aptasensor

Xiuxiu Yang,Zhongqiang Yang

This work established a liquid crystal (LC) aptasensor for simple and rapid detection of ibuprofen, a typical pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) pollutant. A negatively charged DNA aptamer specific for ibuprofen and a positively charged amphiphilic surfactant, hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), were incubated with the sample and then directly added onto the LC interface. In the presence of ibuprofen, the specific binding of ibuprofen with the DNA aptamer will release CTAB, which then adsorbed at the LC–aqueous interface and induced the orientational change of LCs to homeotropic orientation with a dark optical signal output. While in the absence of ibuprofen, the DNA aptamer binds with CTAB through hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions, LCs remained in the planar orientation with a bright optical signal output. This LC aptasensor also has good specificity for ibuprofen and can even detect ibuprofen drug in tap water. Moreover, the response time of the LC aptasensor is fast in minutes. Additionally, this LC aptasensor benefits in monitoring the water quality and inspires the exploration of a general platform for PPCPs detection.

PPCP degradation by ammonia/chlorine: Efficiency, radical species, and byproducts formation

Bei Ye,Qian-Yuan Wu,Wen-Long Wang,Hong-Ying Hu

Pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) are frequently detected in water bodies and have potential risks to human health and the ecosystem. The degradation of eight structurally diverse PPCPs by ammonia/chlorine was systematically investigated in this study. Compared with chlorination, ammonia/chlorine markedly enhanced PPCP degradation, and the degradation efficiencies of most PPCPs were greater than 70%. Tert-butanol strongly suppressed PPCP degradation, while bicarbonate suppressed it moderately, suggesting the importance of ClO⋅and ⋅CO 3 − in PPCP degradation. In neutral conditions, PPCP degradation was mainly attributed to ⋅OH, with its contribution ranging from 74% to 100% at a Cl 2 /N molar ratio of 1.6. Regarding the effect of natural organic matter, atrazine and primidone were inhibited the most, while carbamazepine (CBZ), metoprolol (MTP), and atenolol (ATN) were affected the least. PPCP degradation was suppressed in reclaimed water; the degradation of CBZ, MTP, and ATN was suppressed the least, with degradation efficiencies of 77.1%–85.4%, 75.1%–77.1%, and 64.6%–68.8%, respectively. Furthermore, compared with chlorination, fewer volatile halogenated byproducts were formed in reclaimed water when using the ammonia/chlorine process, and the concentration of each byproduct formed by ammonia/chlorine was less than 10 µg/L. This study suggests the feasibility of using ammonia/chlorine oxidation to degrade PPCPs in reclaimed water.

Performance and mechanism of palladium-based binary nanowires for electrocatalytic removal of halogenated PPCPs

Junjing Li,Xu Liu,Zilin Tan,Liang Wang

In order to enhance the catalytic activity of Pd nanoparticles and reduce the amount of Pd, the present study was carried out to construct nanowire structures by surfactant-directed hydration method to further increase the active sites on the surface of Pd and improve the yield of atomic hydrogen (H ⁎ ). The introduction of cheap metal Ni effectively reduced the Pd dosage and increased the utilization of Pd. Nitrogen-doped ordered mesoporous carbon (NOMC) was incorporated to facilitate the dispersion of Pd particles and improve the stability of the catalyst while ensuring the catalytic activity. The prepared palladium-nickel nanowires/nitrogen-doped ordered mesoporous carbon/carbon (Pd-Ni NWs/NOMC/C) electrodes showed excellent efficiency for the removal of halogenated pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs). The combination of palladium-nickel nanowires (Pd-Ni NWs) with NOMC enhanced the electron transfer capability at the electrode surface and improved the H ⁎ yield. The results showed that the removal efficiency of this electrode for lornoxicam reached 97.2 % at 270 min. The electrode reduced the amount of Pd while stabilizing the electrocatalytic effect. The dechlorination mechanism of Pd-Ni NWs/NOMC/C electrode for lornoxicam was also proposed, and the reaction products and their toxicity were analyzed. This study provided a new idea for designing and synthesizing metal composite catalysts, reduced the cost of catalyst preparation, and had a good application prospect in the treatment of wastewater containing halogenated organic compounds.

Development of an Electrochemical Ceramic Membrane Bioreactor for the Removal of PPCPs from Wastewater

Kangquan Qi,Mei Chen,Ruobin Dai,Qiang Li,Miaoju Lai,Zhiwei Wang

The removal of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) from water and wastewater is of great significance for eco-system safety. In this study, an electrochemical ceramic membrane bioreactor (ECMBR) was developed for removing seven groups (24 kinds in total) of PPCPs from real wastewater. In the presence of an electric field (2 V/cm), the ECMBR could enhance the removal efficiencies for most targeted PPCPs without having adverse impacts on conventional pollutant removal and membrane filtration. The ECMBR achieved higher removal efficiencies for fluoroquinolones (82.8%), β-blockers (24.6%), and sulfonamides (41.0%) compared to the control (CMBR) (52.9%, 4.6%, and 36.4%). For trimethoprim, ECMBR also significantly increased the removal to 66.5% compared to 15.6% in CMBR. Furthermore, the exertion of an electric field did not cause significant changes in microbial communities, suggesting that the enhanced removal of PPCPs should be attributed to the electrochemical oxidation of the built-in electrodes in the ECMBR.Keywords:pharmaceutical and personal care products;electrochemical membrane bioreactor;advanced oxidation process;membrane filtration;wastewater treatment

Chiral molecularly imprinted polymeric stir bar sorptive extraction for naproxen enantiomer detection in PPCPs

Yujian Liu,Yuanchen Liu,Zhimin Liu,Xingchen Zhao,Juntong Wei,Hongcheng Liu,Xiaoxi Si,Zhigang Xu,Zongwei Cai

Chiral micropollutant analysis in pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) is interesting but challenging. We firstly developed a series of chiral molecularly imprinted polymeric (CMIP) stir bar sorptive extraction coatings by combining a chiral template with chiral functional monomers via a click reaction for naproxen enantiomer analysis in PPCPs. Heterochiral selectivity was observed in the molecule recognition of the CMIP coatings, which demonstrated good adsorption capability for the chiral template and its structurally similar chiral compounds. The coatings also exhibited excellent enrichment capability for chiral analytes in an aqueous matrix. The surface morphology and pore structure of the CMIP coatings were characterized. The molecular interactions between the chiral template and chiral functional monomer were investigated through UV–vis spectroscopy and theoretical calculations to prove the effective interactions existing in the heterochiral MIPs. The CMIP coatings were used to enrich naproxen enantiomers in chiral drug and environmental water samples, and satisfactory recoveries (83.98 %–118.88 %) with a relative standard deviation of 3.49 %–13.08 % were achieved. The heterochiral imprinted coating-based method provided a sensitive, selective, and effective enrichment strategy for chiral micropollutant analysis in PPCPs. This technique is critical for chiral molecule recognition and enantiomer analysis in complex samples.

Process and mechanism of PPCPs degradation via high-temperature regulated FeCN composite catalyst-activated peroxymonosulfate

Faxiang Wu,Xiaotong Che,Xinyu Xu,Ruipeng Mao,Lei Chen

Conventional high-temperature synthesis for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) catalysts is typically confined to the range of 200–900 °C, leaving the properties and mechanisms of catalysts synthesized at ultra-high temperatures (>1000 °C) as an open question. This study systematically investigated preparation temperatures ranging from 800 to 1600 °C by developing a series of Fe-C-N-based catalysts, using the pharmaceutical pollutant esmolol (ES) as a model contaminant to evaluate PMS activation performance. The 1400-FeCN catalyst synthesized at 1400 °C demonstrated optimal performance, achieving 95 % ES degradation within 15 min (pseudo-first-order rate constant: 0.21 min −1 ) while maintaining stable activity across a broad pH range (7.4–9.4). The system exhibited remarkable tolerance to common aqueous anions (Cl − , SO 4 2− , CO 3 2− , ClO 4 − ) and maintained effective degradation performance in real hospital wastewater matrices. Mechanistic studies identified iron(IV)-oxo (Fe IV =O) complexes as the dominant reactive species responsible for contaminant oxidation. This work establishes both fundamental principles and practical methodologies for developing ultra-high-temperature PMS catalysts.

Excellent photo-thermal performance of a new superhydrophobic material with PPCPS for crude oil separation

Taipeng Jiang,Yingying Wang,Jian Wu,Jingjing He,Sheng Chen,Meng Li,Weijie Wei,Lingling Zeng,Jin Li,Zhuwei Gao

With the frequent occurrence of petroleum product spills, it caused serious economic losses and ecological problems. In this study, covalent organic framework (COF) was first grown by in situ polymerization on a polyurethane sponge (PU). Subsequently, the resulting product was modified with polydopamine (PDA) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to obtain PDMS/PDA/COF-modified polyurethane sponge (PPCPS). After testing, PPCPS was shown to have superhydrophobic properties with a contact angle of up to 154.42°. The material for oil–water mixture separation efficiency was very high, after 50 times of circulation still reached more than 99.6 %. It had excellent adsorption capacity for a variety of oils and organic solvents, such as carbon tetrachloride oil-absorbing capacity could be 48.7 times. Its structure was stable under complex chemical environments and mechanical external forces, with good flame retardancy. In addition, the material had excellent photothermal conversion capacity, with a temperature of up to 70.1 °C at 1 kW/m 2 light intensity, which could effectively reduce the viscosity of crude oil. COF and PDA synergistically enhanced photothermal heating and crude oil adsorption, enabling efficient crude oil separation and cyclic reuse.

Rapid activation of PMS by dual-site functional carbon nitride for continuous removal of PPCPs

Yu Jiang,Yinghao Tang,Cheng Tang,Cheng Qian,Si Wang,Xiuquan Xiong,Zipeng Zhang,Mengying Jia,Fangxian Wang,Qiong Liu

A metal-free P/O dual-site functional carbon nitride was synthetized. • P O Lewis-acid centers and O-coordinated electron-rich sites were induced to CN-P5. • CN-P5 removed 5 mg/L APAP within 60 min using 1 mM PMS. • APAP was degraded via hydroxylation, C N scission, ring opening, and mineralization. • PPCPs at realistic level were removed from actual domestic sewage continuously. Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation-based advanced oxidation processes provide powerful strategies for persistent pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) removal in aquatic environments and wastewater. However, intrinsically sluggish PMS decomposition kinetics and inefficient utilization of reactive species impede their practical implementation. Developing robust, metal-free photocatalysts capable of efficiently activating PMS under mild conditions remains challenging. In this study, a metal-free P/O dual-site functional carbon nitride (CN-P5) featuring localized polarization was rationally constructed via phytic acid-assisted thermal polymerization, enabling efficient PMS activation under visible-light for rapid PPCPs degradation. With 1 mM PMS, complete removal of 5 mg/L acetaminophen (APAP) was achieved within 60 min. The degradation proceeded through hydroxylation, C N scission, ring opening, and progressive mineralization, accompanied by decreasing predicted toxicity of intermediates. Characterizations combined with density functional theory calculations revealed that P atoms partially substitute framework C to generate electron-deficient P O Lewis acid centers, preferentially accumulating photogenerated holes and promoting PMS adsorption. Meanwhile, O atoms coordinate at bridging N sites, giving rise to electron-rich P O units. The synergistic integration of these polarized dual P O dipolar sites boosted PMS activation efficiency. To demonstrate application potential, CN-P5 was packed into a fixed-bed continuous-flow reactor, enabling simultaneous and efficient removal of APAP, norfloxacin and sulfamethoxazole from real lake water matrices. Moreover, the reactor maintains stable removal efficiency for APAP, norfloxacin and ofloxacin continuously at realistic concentrations from actual domestic sewage. Collectively, this work establishes a scalable, metal-free PMS activation platform that couples dual-sites electronic engineering with continuous processing for PPCPs abatement in real waters.

Highly Efficient Mineralization of Typical PPCPs in Medical Wastewater via P25TiO2 Photocatalysis Under Sunlight Irradiation

Meiqi Gao,Xinyan Hou,Hongmei Li,Yansen Han,Jianing Wang,Yanqiu Cao

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), as persistent organic pollutants, are widely present in various aquatic environments. Their long-term presence in aquatic environments poses a potential threat to ecosystems and human health. This study established an efficient, green, and cost-effective photocatalytic method using P25 titanium dioxide (P25TiO2) to simultaneously degrade five representative PPCPs (methyl paraben (MeP), carbamazepine (CBZ), bisphenol A (BPA), diclofenac (DFC), and triclosan (TCS), while elucidating the reaction mechanisms. Under sunlight irradiation, degradation rates for all five PPCPs reached 100%, achieving near-complete mineralization with total organic carbon (TOC) removal rates exceeding 95%. This demonstrates the system’s exceptional capability to not only degrade the parent compounds but to thoroughly convert them into benign inorganic substances. We systematically investigated the effects of catalyst concentration, initial pollutant concentration, light intensity, pH, and various common inorganic anions (chloride, sulfate, bicarbonate, phosphate) and humic acid (HA) on the degradation process. Additionally, mechanistic studies indicated that hydroxyl radicals (·OH) are the primary active species in the system. The degradation rate differences among various persistent organic pollutants (DFC > BPA > TCS > CBZ > MeP) primarily stem from variations in the reactivity of different functional groups within their molecular structures toward ·OH. In summary, this study provides a promising and practical solution for treating complex medical wastewater containing five typical PPCPs.

Selective FeOx deposition on BiVO4 (010) Facet: boosting visible-light-driven photo-Fenton degradation of PPCPs

Sha Shi,Jihui Wang,Chunhong Xu,Jie Mao,Yaohui Bai

Carbamazepine (CBZ), a typical pharmaceutical and personal care product (PPCP), has an annual global consumption exceeding several thousand tons. Its molecular structure contains symmetrical nitrogen-containing aromatic heterocycles, which resist degradation by conventional biochemical methods, resulting in persistent aquatic pollution. Integrating photocatalytic processes with Fenton reaction provides a targeted approach for its effective elimination from aquatic systems. However, traditional photo-Fenton systems suffer from inefficient Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ redox cycling due to sluggish Fe³⁺ regeneration and rapid recombination of photogenerated charge carriers. To address these challenges, this study designed a facet-engineered BiVO 4 photocatalyst through selective deposition of FeOx nanoparticles on the electron-rich (010) facets of monoclinic BiVO 4 via hydrothermal and photodeposition methods. The optimized FeOx/BiVO 4 composite exhibited exceptional degradation performance for CBZ, achieving a rate constant of 0.317   min -1 , which is 24-fold higher than that of pristine BiVO 4 . Mechanistic investigations revealed that the selective FeOx deposition not only promoted the valence-state transition of Fe 3+ to Fe 2+ but also enhanced charge carrier separation, thereby establishing a sustainable Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ redox cycle. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis and radical quenching experiments further identified hydroxyl radicals (·OH) as the dominant reactive species. This work provides a paradigm for designing efficient photo-Fenton reaction systems through targeted facet engineering, offering broad implications for the remediation of PPCPs.

Mechanism of Electrocatalytic Wet Air Oxidation of PPCPs over Solid Catalysts: Kinetic Insight with a Universal Model

Min Sun,Miao-Miao Hou,Xian-Zhang Wang,Bao-Jun Yang,Lin-Feng Zhai,Shaobin Wang

Electrocatalytic wet air oxidation (ECWAO) is a novel wet air oxidation technology using an anodic electric field to stimulate oxygen for catalytic oxidation of water pollutants at ambient condition. Herein, a mechanistic kinetic model is established based on the degradation of bisphenol A in an ECWAO process with manganese oxide (MnOx) catalysts, and the general applicability of the model is verified by triclosan degradation over a Ni@NiO catalyst and sulfamethoxazole degradation over a MnMoOx catalyst. Elementary steps involved in solid-catalyzed reaction and the assistant role of anodic electric field in the catalysis are taken into consideration. A group of kinetic equations based on the Langmuir–Hinshelwood–Hougen–Watson (LHHW) or Eley–Rideal (ER) rate laws are evaluated using the criteria of the minimization of the residual sum of squares and average error. The results show that the ECWAO reaction is best described by the LHHW model in which the surface reaction between adsorbed oxygen and adsorbed organic molecules is the rate-determining step. The key parameters controlling ECWAO reaction kinetics are the adsorption equilibrium constant of oxygen and rate constant of the surface reaction. According to the kinetic model, the reaction rates of organic pollutants are nearly linear dependent upon their concentrations within a certain range. With the increment of the circuit current, the reaction rates of organic pollutants first rise, then reach a plateau, and finally decline. The mechanistic kinetic model proves to be applicable for interpreting and predicting the ECWAO rates of organics over the transition metal oxide catalysts.
