PdCu@rGO-based Electrochemical Sensor for Rapid Detection of Catechol

Xiaoying Shen,Muyu Yan,Qiongya Wan,Ming Li,Xuefeng Wang,Pengcheng Xu,Yongheng Zhu

Catechol, a prevalent phenolic pollutant in food products, poses a significant threat to food safety, necessitating the development of rapid and sensitive detection methods. To overcome the limitations of conventional analytical techniques, such as expensive equipment and operational complexity, electrochemical sensors have gained considerable attention owing to their rapid response and facile miniaturization. However, the rational design of sensing materials that exhibit both high sensitivity and selectivity remains a significant challenge. Herein, a series of PdCu bimetallic nanoparticles supported on reduced graphene oxide (PdCu@rGO) composites with varying Pd/Cu molar ratios was synthesized via a one-step liquid-phase reduction method. Owing to the synergistic electronic effects between Pd and Cu and the high electrical conductivity of the rGO support, the resulting nanocomposites exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity toward catechol oxidation. At the optimal Pd/Cu molar ratio of 1:2, the fabricated Pd1Cu2@rGO/SPE sensor demonstrated a broad linear range of 0.5–500 μM, a low limit of detection of 200 nM (S/N = 3), good repeatability (RSD = 4.9%), and robust anti-interference capability. Furthermore, the proposed sensor was successfully applied to the detection of catechol in spiked green tea and fruit juice samples without complex pretreatment, achieving satisfactory recoveries of 91.0–101.4% and 98.6–104.8%, respectively. This work provides a reliable platform for the rapid, on-site screening of catechol in food matrices and offers valuable experimental insights into the rational design of bimetallic alloy–graphene heterostructures.

Selective hydrogenation of high concentration acetylene over the well-defined crystalline sites of Pd1Cu1 and Pd1Cu3

Junqi Pei,Yamei Xu,Qiuchen Yang,Ruijun Hou

Specific structures of PdCu bimetallic catalysts have been reported to exhibit superior performance in the hydrogenation of acetylene; however, the performance and the underlying mechanism of the conventional catalysts with comparable Pd/Cu ratios remain unknown. In this work, the well-defined crystalline sites of Pd1Cu1 and Pd1Cu3 are investigated in the hydrogenation of high concentration acetylene, and the corresponding conventional catalysts prepared by incipient wetness impregnation are compared. By correlating the theoretical and experimental results, the electronic effect is found to be present on the bimetallic structures, which results in better inhibition of excessive hydrogenation. The oligomerization reaction is better controlled over Pd/SiO2(NS) and Pd1Cu1/SiO2(NS), and Pd1Cu3/SiO2(NS) exhibits the highest selectivity to oligomers and the largest amount of green oil accumulation. Among the well-defined structures, Pd1Cu1/SiO2(NS) shows similar activity and stability to Pd/SiO2(NS), but better suppression of the excessive hydrogenation reaction. Due to the existence of various sites, the conventional bimetallic catalysts show different properties from the corresponding well-defined crystalline catalysts. The performances of the well-defined alloy structures allow us to understand and analyze the actual properties of the surface sites over the conventional catalysts, and inspire further work to design optimum catalysts in different reaction environments.

Surface defect-regulated PdCu/TiO2−x promoting efficient electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction

Chengguang Liu,Xiaolei Guo,Zhen-Feng Huang,Jinheng Li,Li Gan,Lun Pan,Chengxiang Shi,Xiangwen Zhang,Guidong Yang,Ji-Jun Zou

Due to the utilization of renewable energy and proton sources, the electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction is considered as an efficient, sustainable, and carbon-neutral route to replace the industrial Haber–Bosch process. However, restricted by the highly competitive hydrogen evolution reaction and the highly inert NN bond, electrochemical nitrogen reduction research still faces significant challenges with a low level of selectivity and activity. Herein, we demonstrate a catalyst (PdCu/TiO2−x) composed of oxygen vacancy-rich TiO2−x nanosheets and PdCu alloy nanoparticles by the co-reduction method of metal precursors. Such a catalyst exhibits excellent electrocatalytic performance at room temperature and pressure, with an NH3 yield rate of 8.51 mmol gcat−1 h−1 and the corresponding faradaic efficiency of 49.09% at −0.1 V vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode, which are much higher than most reported palladium-based catalysts and their alloy catalysts. Characterization and experimental results confirm that by properly constructing the surface defect and nanoalloy structure, the optimized electronic structure and synergistic effect can not only effectively improve the N2 adsorption and activation, but also reduce the reaction barrier, resulting in efficient electrocatalytic performance. Meanwhile, the introduction of Cu accelerates the hydrogen desorption, further effectively improving the faradaic efficiency. Overall, we explored the electrocatalytic performance and mechanism of the bimetal alloy catalyst, as well as the optimization strategies for enhancing the nitrogen mass transfer process, providing new insight into the rational design of a highly efficient e-NRR system through tuning of the catalyst and reaction environment.

Strain Effect in PdCu Alloy Metallene for Enhanced Formic Acid Electrooxidation Reaction

Kaili Wang,Zhen Cao,Jia He

Developing high-activity and high-durability Pd-based electrocatalysts is an important strategy to promote their commercial application. Herein, a smaller particle size and ultrathin sheet-like PdCu alloy metallene (PdCuene) were successfully prepared by using a one-pot wet chemistry method for FAOR. Experimental measurements indicated that the introduction Cu into Pd lattice induces a significant compressive strain effect through lattice mismatch between Pd and Cu, and the strain effect optimizes the electronic structure of Pd, as well as the high electrochemical surface area, increased exposure of active sites, and appropriate lattice strain have been demonstrated as factors that influence the enhancement of intrinsic activity and the acceleration of kinetics, thereby improving FAOR performance. Moreover, the stronger lattice strain of 0.85% would facilitate surface adsorption and dissociation of formic acid. Specifically, the optimized PdCuene exhibits enhanced mass activity and specific activity with current densities of 2.31 A mgPd−1and 4.09 mA cm−2, respectively, which transcend the activities of Pd metallene (1.44 A mgPd−1and 2.73 mA cm−2) and commercial Pd/C (0.6 A mgPd−1and 1.53 mA cm−2). Meanwhile, PdCuene displayed obvious enhanced durability. The work provides an approach to modulate the lattice strain engineering, which represents a highly promising strategy for designing efficient FAOR electrocatalysts.

Solvothermal synthesis of PdCu nanorings with high catalytic performance for alcohol electrooxidation

Xinyu Gu,Dongqiong Wang,Nannan Zhang,Yangping Zhang,Changqing Ye,Yukou Du

Two-dimensional (2D) Pd-based nanostructures with a high active surface area and a large number of active sites are commonly used in alcohol oxidation research, whereas the less explored ring structure made of nanosheets with large pores is of interest. In this study, we detail the fabrication of PdCu nanorings (NRs) featuring hollow interiors and low coordinated sites using a straightforward solvothermal approach. Due to increased exposure of active sites and the synergistic effects of bimetallics, the PdCu NRs exhibited superior catalytic performance in both the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) and the ethylene glycol oxidation reaction (EGOR). The mass activities of PdCu NRs for EOR and EGOR were measured at 7.05 A/mg and 8.12 A/mg, respectively, surpassing those of commercial Pd/C. Furthermore, the PdCu NRs demonstrated enhanced catalytic stability, maintaining higher mass activity levels compared to other catalysts during stability testing. This research offers valuable insights for the development of efficient catalysts for alcohol oxidation.

Bimetallic PdCu nanohybrid sheets for enhanced electrocatalytic selective semi-hydrogenation of alkynols

Yun Fang,Yong Yan,Xiayan Wang,Guangsheng Guo

The selective semi‑hydrogenation of alkynols to alkenols is crucial in pharmaceutical and fine chemical industries, yet hindered by inefficient thermocatalytic processes and over‑hydrogenation on Pd-based catalysts. Herein, we report a palladium‑copper bimetallic nanohybrid sheet catalyst (PdCu NHSs/NF) that enables efficient electrocatalytic alkynol semi‑hydrogenation (ECSH) using water as the proton source. For 1,4-butynediol (BYD), PdCu NHSs/NF achieves 99.8 % conversion within only 1 h, and 96.4 % selectivity, 95.2 % Faradaic efficiency at a low potential of −0.2  V vs. RHE, while maintaining stability over 10 cycles and broad substrate applicability. In situ EIS and spectroscopic studies revealed that the PdCu bimetallic interface enhances mass transport and reaction kinetics, enabling selective BED formation without over‑hydrogenation. DFT calculations demonstrated the cooperative effect between Pd and Cu active sites optimized the adsorption/desorption energetics, balancing the competition between HER and ECSH. This work provides critical mechanistic insights for designing advanced bimetallic catalysts in selective semi‑hydrogenation.

B, P-co-doped PdCu nanothorn assemblies for enhanced oxygen reduction electrolysis

Hongjing Wang,Hongyong Chen,Shuli Yin,Qiqi Mao,Chunjie Li,You Xu,Xiaonian Li,Ziqiang Wang,Liang Wang

Nonmetal doping is a promising strategy to improve electrocatalytic performance of noble metal based catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Herein, we report a facile method to fabricate PdCuBP nanothorn assemblies (PdCuBP NTAs) by co-doping B and P into pre-synthesized PdCu NTAs using NaBH4 and NaH2PO2 as B source and P source, respectively. The metal-nonmetal structure and multi-branched morphology can optimize oxygen adsorption energy and avoid catalyst migration, agglomeration and Ostwald ripening. As such, the obtained PdCuBP NTAs exhibit efficient activity and excellent long-term stability for ORR. This research offers an excellent strategy for co-doping nonmetal elements into metal nanocrystals with controllable composition and structure to improve electrocatalytic ORR performance.

Dynamic reconstruction of PdCu interfaces enables high-performance dimethylamine borane fuel cells

Yexuan Zhang,Xuewei Hao,Ruijie Wang,Changqing Jin,Jiaqi Zhang,Liangyao Xue,Weihang Li,Shuanglong Huang,Youyong Li,Wen Guo,Bo Zhang

DFT identifies Pd Cu as a promising system for OH − -assisted DMAB electrooxidation. • Pd-Cu 2 (OH) 3 Cl/C is in situ reduced to a Pd Cu heterostructure during operation. • The reconstructed interface enriches local OH − to rapidly remove adsorbed hydrogen. • Direct DMAB fuel cell achieves 1.39 W cm −2 peak power density and > 100 h stability. Direct dimethylamine borane (DMAB) fuel cells are attractive energy sources due to their high energy density and favorable physicochemical properties. Although Pd-based catalysts can efficiently cleave B H bonds during DMAB oxidation reaction (DMABOR), their catalytic activity and selectivity are limited by strong hydrogen adsorption (H ad ). Density functional theory calculations reveal that introducing Cu into Pd optimizes the adsorption of OH − and borane intermediates, significantly lowering the kinetic barrier for DMAB electrooxidation. Herein, we report a Pd-Cu 2 (OH) 3 Cl heterostructure supported on XC-72 carbon (Pd-Cu 2 (OH) 3 Cl/C) that undergoes dynamic in situ reconstruction under operating conditions to form an active Pd Cu heterointerface. In situ spectroscopy reveals that the reconstructed interface enriches surface OH − species and accelerates the oxidative removal of H ad , thereby promoting borane oxidation kinetics. As a result, the assembled fuel cell delivers a peak power density of 1.39 W cm −2 , 1.8-fold higher than that of Pd/C (0.78 W cm −2 ), and maintains stable operation for over 100 h. Synthesis of carbon supported Au-decorated PdCu nanocatalyst for formic acid oxidation

Suo Yange,Zhang Zhan,He Jiaping,Zhang Zhiguo,Hu Guilin

This work reports the synthesis of a novel carbon supported Au-decorated PdCu composite catalyst for formic acid oxidation. The catalyst was prepared through a two-step process. PdCu alloy was firstly prepared through co-reduction of Pd and Cu ions using ethylene glycol and sodium citrate as the reducing and stabilizing reagents. Au was decorated on the surface of the PdCu alloy through spontaneous replacements of Pd and Cu by Au. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) image shows that the metallic nanoparticles are well dispersed on the carbon surface. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results demonstrate that the Pd 3d 5/2 binding energy (BE) of the PdCu@Au/C exhibits a positive shift in comparison with that of Pd/C and PdCu/C. The as-prepared composite catalyst exhibits higher activity towards formic acid oxidation in comparison with individual Pd. Interestingly, a significantly improved electrochemical stability of Au-decorated PdCu nanoparticles compared with the PdCu counterpart is observed.

Dongqiong Wang,Yangping Zhang,Jie Li,Nannan Zhang,Zhengying Wu,Yukou Du

Reasonable design of Pd-based catalysts with specific composition and morphology is of great importance for promoting the commercial application. of direct alcohol fuel cells (DAFCs). Recently, two-dimension (2D) with high density of defects and massive low-coordinated surface atom has become research highlights in the field of catalysis. Herein, we report a wet chemical method for synthesizing PdCu nanosheets with abundant wrinkles. The ultrathin two-dimensional structure endows catalysts plentiful catalytic active sites and large specific surface area, improving atomic utilization efficiency. The formation of bimetallic PdCu alloy structure leads to the adjustment of Pd electronic structure, resulting in lattice compression effect. Benefitting from the structural and compositional characteristics, PdCu nanosheets (NSs) exhibits excellent electrocatalytic performance for ethylene glycol oxidation reaction (EGOR) and glycerol oxidation reaction (GOR) with the mass activity of 7031 mA mg −1 /5117 mA mg −1 , which is 4.4/3.9 times higher than that of commercial Pd/C catalysts. Furthermore, the remained mass activity of PdCu NSs is 3991/3851 mA mg −1 after the durability measurement for EGOR/GOR, which confirm PdCu NSs possesses superior stability. We believe that our synthetic strategy could provide robust reference for the development of high-performance eletrocatalysts.

PdCu alloy nanoparticles supported on reduced graphene oxide for electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol

Ye Huangqing,Li Yunming,Chen Jiahui,Sheng Jiali,Fu Xian-Zhu,Sun Rong,Wong Ching-Ping

PdCu nanoparticles supported on reduced graphene oxide nanosheets (PdCu/rGO) with uniform size distribution and dispersion are fabricated by a facile two-step reduction method. During the whole synthesis procedure, no capping agent or surfactant has been used. By varying the Pd/Cu molar ratio, electrocatalysts with different size distribution and dispersion of nanoparticles on graphene are prepared, and their electrocatalytic performance toward methanol oxidation reaction has been studied. It is concluded that the as-prepared electrocatalyst of Pd 2 Cu 2 /rGO, of which the Pd/Cu molar ratio is 1:1, exhibits the highest mass activity and most stable electroactivity. Compared to commercial Pd/C, the as-prepared Pd 2 Cu 2 /rGO also demonstrates 2.49 times higher mass activity and much more stable electroactivity. The excellent performance of the Pd 2 Cu 2 /rGO electrocatalyts is mainly due to the advantages of bimetallic synergistic effects and the supporting material of graphene. Owing to the advantages of high electroactivity, long stability, and cost-effectiveness, the as-prepared Pd 2 Cu 2 /rGO nanocomposites are promising anode electrocatalysts for direct methanol fuel cells.

Advanced Plasmon-driven ethylene glycol oxidation over 3D ultrathin Lotus-like PdCu nanosheets

Kewang Zhang,Cheng Wang,Huaming You,Bin Zou,Siyu Guo,Shujin Li,Yukou Du

Coupling the unique surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of plasma metals with electrocatalysis is of huge challenge but great significance to advance alcohol oxidation. Herein, we demonstrate the commendable SPR effect of Cu harvesting solar energy to boost the electrocatalytic efficiency of ethylene glycol oxidation reaction (EGOR) over 3D ultrathin lotus-like PdCu nanosheets (NSs). Notably, the well-defined PdCu-2 NSs exhibit the highest mass activity (7547 mA mg −1 ) to EGOR under visible light illumination, which is 1.3 times enhanced versus in dark, as well as outclassing the Pd-homemade NSs and commercial Pd/C catalyst. Meanwhile, the PdCu-2 NSs also show excellent stability in long-term durable tests. Investigations of the correlative mechanism reveal that the enhanced EGOR is mainly attributed to the SPR of Cu promoting the electron transfer from Cu to Pd, modifying the electronic structure of Pd, and facilitating the charge transport in electrochemical reactions, thus strengthening the electrocatalytic ability of Pd. This work sheds light on the SPR of plasma Cu-assisted photoelectrocatalysis to EGOR and provides new avenues to develop novel and high-efficiency photoelectrocatalysts for liquid fuel cells.
