Controlled release of doxorubicin from amphiphilic depsipeptide–PDO–PEG-based copolymer nanosized microspheres

Li Zhang,Yakai Feng,Hong Tian,Changcan Shi,Miao Zhao,Jintang Guo

Novel biodegradable amphiphilic ABA triblock copolymers , i.e. poly(3(S)-methyl-morpholine-2,5-dione- co - p -dioxanone)-block-poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(3(S)-methyl-morpholine-2,5-dione- co - p -dioxanone) [P(MMD- co -PDO)- b -PEG- b -P(MMD- co -PDO)], were successfully prepared by ring-opening polymerization of 3(S)-methyl-morpholine-2,5-dione (MMD) and p -dioxanone (PDO) in the presence of poly(ethylene glycol) 6000 as an initiator. These triblock copolymers were characterized by 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR, Fourier transform infrared, gel permeation chromatography and differential scanning calorimetry measurements. P(MMD- co -PDO)- b -PEG- b -P(MMD- co -PDO) could self-assemble into stable nanosized microspheres with critical micellar concentrations of 0.41–0.66   μg/mL. The microspheres showed high hydrolytic degradation. In addition, doxorubicin (DOX) was chosen as a model drug and successfully encapsulated into the microspheres by hydrogen-bond interaction and hydrophobic effect . The transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering measurements revealed that these microspheres were ellipsoidal nanoparticles with diameters ranged from 50 to 100   nm. These copolymer microspheres exhibited high loading capacity (LC), encapsulation efficiency (EE) of DOX and sustained drug release behavior in phosphate buffered solution (PBS). Moreover, the release rate of DOX from those microspheres in pH 4.0 PBS was faster than that in pH 7.4 due to pH sensitivity of the polymer–drug systems and the degradation of the matrix polymers . These amphiphilic depsipeptide multiblock copolymers would be potential promising carriers for anti-tumour drug delivery.

Enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen production from formic acid with reversible electron transfers in PdO/TiO2

Hong Wang,Zhongming Wang,Zizhong Zhang,Yaming Fan,Xianzhi Fu,Wenxin Dai

A prepared p-type PdO/n-type TiO 2 junction was prepared as the catalyst for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from formic acid (FA). It was found that PdO/TiO 2 exhibited 1298-fold higher activity than TiO 2 under ultraviolet and visible light irradiation at room temperature. Multiple characterization techniques were utilized to demonstrate that doping PdO into TiO 2 can regulate the Fermi level of the sample and the adsorption behavior of FA, resulting in different electron transfer behavior between FA and PdO/TiO 2 compared to that between FA and TiO 2 . Oxygen vacancies acted as electron donors to deliver photogenerated electrons from TiO 2 to the adsorbed bidentate FA, which increased the electron density on the O atom of FA and led to the formation of activated monodentate FA. This activated FA was more easily oxidized by the holes in PdO generated by visible light, leading to the production of H 2 and CO 2 . The mode of adsorption associated with the Pd 2+ site is the key factor in driving this reaction and leading to the reversible electron transfer phenomenon. This study provides a new promising route for the design of photocatalysts for self-decomposition reactions.

Tailoring uniform PdO dispersion on hierarchical mesoporous SnO2 nanospheres for enhanced hydrogen sensing performance

Xianting Zhang,Jie Ouyang,Haopan Hu,Lingjun Song,Yingguang Xie,Yihao Wang,Jiaxi Liu,Zhong Cao,Julan Zeng,Hongge Pan,Federico Rosei,Fen Xu,Yumei Luo,Lixian Sun

Hydrogen (H 2 ) is widely regarded as a clean energy carrier, yet its flammability underscores the need for highly sensitive and rapid gas sensors to ensure safe leak detection. Conventional noble-metal-modified SnO 2 sensors often suffer from slow sensing kinetics and high material costs due to poor noble metal dispersion and excessive doping content. Herein, we design and synthesize the SnO 2 -PdO composite with uniform nanosphere structure by a facile one-step template strategy. The optimized SnO 2 -PdO-2% sensor achieves excellent sensing performance with only 2 mol% Pd loading, benefiting from its mesoporous architecture, high specific surface area, and efficient SnO 2 /PdO heterointerfaces, which promote charge transfer and enhance the adsorption of active oxygen species. The sensor operates at a relatively low temperature of 180 °C with an ultrafast response time of 1 s and recovery time of 6 s. In addition, a theoretical detection limit of 54 ppb is obtained. The sensor also demonstrates preferential hydrogen sensing behavior, good long-term stability, and excellent reproducibility. This work provides a highly Pd-efficient strategy for designing high-performance semiconductor oxide sensors for rapid and reliable hydrogen leak detection.

Boosting Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction by low-palladium-loading PdO-ZnO/La2O3 photothermal catalysts

Zirui Zhang,Xujie Hao,Yunfei Xu,Bing Wang,Yinghui Sun,Tong Xu,Jie Bai

Controllable construction of hollow tubular structures and the mechanism of photo-thermal synergistic catalysis. • The incorporation of Zn facilitates the directional transfer of photoexcited electrons to Pd, tailoring its electronic structure. • Exceptional catalytic performance (TOF = 4234h −1 ) and atomic utilization efficiency achieved under ultralow palladium loading. Photothermal synergy offers a promising pathway to overcome the limitations of high energy demands and stringent reaction conditions associated with conventional Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction. Herein, a hollow tubular palladium oxide-zinc oxide/lanthanum oxide nano photothermal catalyst (PdO-ZnO/La 2 O 3 ) was successfully synthesized via electrospinning combined with high-temperature pyrolysis. The as-prepared material exhibited outstanding photothermal catalytic activity in the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction, achieving a 98% yield of biphenyl within 30 min under mild conditions and delivering a turnover frequency (TOF) as high as 4234.1 h -1 . The superior catalytic activity is attributed to the transfer of photogenerated electrons from Zinc species to palladium species under visible light irradiation, facilitating the formation of electron-rich palladium active sites. This synergistic effect significantly enhances the reaction rate of the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling. This catalyst achieves high catalytic activity with only 0.5 wt% Pd loading, outperforming prior reported systems by maintaining excellent performance while drastically lowering Pd consumption and enhancing precious metal utilization efficiency. Furthermore, the catalyst retained over 92% of its performance after five reaction cycles, demonstrating robust recyclability and sustained catalytic performance. This study provides new insights for the development of high-performance and low-energy photothermal catalysts and facilitates the practical application of Suzuki-Miyaura reactions in green synthesis. Surface electronic structure modulation of PdO/SnO2 through loading Pd for superior hydrogen sensing performance

Danhong Gao,Shasha Gao,Hanling Deng,Hongwei Liu,Dusong Hou,Qianyao Lu,Xinjian He,Sheng Huang

Modulating the surface electronic structure of metal oxides is crucial for enhancing their gas-sensing performance, with gradient energy level structures offering effective regulate. However, the mechanism underlying their impact on hydrogen sensing remains unclear. This study constructed mesoporous Pd-PdO/SnO 2 double-shelled microspheres with gradient energy levels via a soft-template method, precisely tuning the surface electronic structure of SnO 2 . The architecture integrates high surface area (30.9 m 2 /g), ordered mesopores (17.9 nm), and Schottky barrier modulation at PdO(5.04 eV)-SnO 2 (4.92 eV) interfaces, establishing unidirectional electron transfer pathways that amplify charge separation efficiency by 7.3×. The optimized 5 at.% Pd-PdO/SnO 2 sensor achieves high H 2 response (R a /R g  =  [email protected]  ppm) at 162.5℃ with ultrafast kinetics (0.2 s response/4.8 s recovery), a three-order detection span (0.5–8000 ppm), and humidity tolerance (91 % accuracy@80 %RH via machine learning). Theory calculation reveals the gradient structure enhances H 2 adsorption energy (−0.76 eV vs. PdO/SnO 2 : −0.02 eV) and boosts interfacial charge transfer by 46× (0.276 e vs. 0.006 e), driven by synergistic mechanisms: (1) Sn 5 s/p-dominated conduction band electron enrichment (68 % DOS increase near Fermi level), and (2) Pd catalytic activation lowering H 2 dissociation barriers from 1.32 eV (SnO 2 ) to 0.85 eV. This electronic-structure engineering paradigm establishes a roadmap for intelligent gas sensors.

Hierarchical engineering of BiVO4 via In doping and PdO loading for high-performance acetone sensing

Jiarong Chen,Hao yang,Hongyun Li,Qiang Wu,Yibo Wang,Wen Zeng,Zhen Han,Quansheng Ouyang,Cheng Chen

A hierarchical modification strategy involving In doping and subsequent PdO loading was developed to significantly enhance the acetone sensing properties of BiVO 4 . The pristine BiVO 4 (BVO), In-doped BiVO 4 (In-BVO), and PdO-loaded In-BiVO 4 (Pd/In-BVO) were systematically synthesized and evaluated. The gas sensing results demonstrated that the response to 100 ppm acetone was substantially improved from 10 (BVO) to 15 (In-BVO) and further to 22 (Pd/In-BVO). Notably, the operating temperatures of BVO and In-BVO were both 310 °C, while that of Pd/In-BVO was meaningfully reduced to 270 °C. Furthermore, the theoretical limit of detection was lowered to 50 ppb for the Pd/In-BVO, compared to 199 ppb for pure BVO. Combined characterizations revealed that In doping introduced acidic sites to enhance acetone adsorption, while simultaneously lowering the oxygen desorption temperature. The subsequent PdO loading not only amplified these effects but also introduced a PdO/BiVO 4 heterojunction along with metallic Pd, which collectively promoted carrier separation, increased charge carrier concentration, and facilitated the adsorption and activation of oxygen species. This work provides a profound insight into the design of high-performance gas sensors through multi-step engineering.

Biodegradable depsipeptide–PDO–PEG-based block copolymer micelles as nanocarriers for controlled release of doxorubicin

Juan Lv,Li Zhang,Musammir Khan,Xiangkui Ren,Jintang Guo,Yakai Feng

Nowadays, biodegradable amphiphilic block copolymers with stable performance and adjustable structure have attracted the interests of researchers in the field of drug delivery. In this work, the triblock copolymer , P(SBMD- co -PDO)- b -PEG- b -P(SBMD- co -PDO), was successfully synthesized by ring-opening polymerization of 3(S)- sec -butyl-morpholine-2,5-dione (SBMD) and p -dioxanone (PDO) with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) as the initiator. In phosphate buffered solution (PBS), these copolymers could self-assemble into nano-sized micelles that have a hydrophobic P(SBMD- co -PDO) core surrounded by a hydrophilic PEG shell. Because of the strong hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions, doxorubicin (DOX) was loaded into the micelles with high loading capacity (LC, up to 28.4%) and encapsulation efficiency (EE, up to 62.5%). The drug-loaded micelles showed sustained-release of DOX along with the hydrolytic degradation of the micelles in PBS. Therefore, these amphiphilic triblock copolymers have potential as drug matrix for controlled release.

Facile Synthesis of Pd loaded g-C3N4/TiO2 heterojunction catalyst with enhanced photothermal catalytic performance in Suzuki Coupling under moderate condition

Yunfei Xu,Ying Li,Yongjian Wei,Haiou Liang,Tong Xu,Yinghui Sun,Jie Bai

Photothermal synergistic catalysis of Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction not only utilizes the solar energy efficiently, but also reduces the energy consumption. It is a green organic synthesis method for constructing C–C bonds, which has a wide application. In this work, we constructed a PdO/g-C 3 N 4 /TiO 2 bilayer tubular structure material with a heterojunction structure by a simple and effective method. The catalyst exhibited efficient photothermal synergistic catalytic performance in Suzuki coupling reaction under visible light irradiation. The influence of the catalyst’s structure, morphology, composition, and photothermal response on the Suzuki coupling reaction were discussed based on a series of characterizations and activity test of the catalyst. The results showed that the PdO/g-C 3 N 4 /TiO 2 catalyst contained an effective g-C 3 N 4 /TiO 2 heterojunction structure. Under visible illumination, the differences in interfacial charge concentration and electron affinity between these two different types of semiconductors lead to charge rearrangement and transfer, which greatly improves the carrier separation efficiency. Meanwhile, palladium metal exhibits excellent electron deposition effects, both as an active metal center for SMC reactions and as an electron acceptor for facilitating photoelectron transfer. Electron-rich palladium atoms play an important role in C–C bond formation reactions, improving catalytic efficiency. The PdO/g-C 3 N 4 /TiO 2 catalyst has excellent catalytic activity and can catalyze the SMC reaction under visible light and at 0 ℃, the yield reached 85.6%, which is comparable to the activity of thermal catalysis for 15   minutes. Furthermore, after five cycles, the PdO/g-C 3 N 4 /TiO 2 catalyst still maintained an 83.1% yield, demonstrating excellent cycle stability. This article offers an effective strategy for preparing heterojunction catalyst with visible light response for photothermal reaction and presents the potential of these catalysts as a way to improve the efficiency and sustainability of Suzuki coupling reactions.

High performance formic acid fuel cell benefits from Pd–PdO catalyst supported by ordered mesoporous carbon

Yuan Zhou,Xun Zhu,Biao Zhang,Ding-Ding Ye,Rong Chen,Qiang Liao

Formic acid as a renewable fuel can be converted to clean electricity in fuel cells by high-efficient electrochemical oxidation . The conversion rate is fundamentally dictated by the synergy of interactive aspects: catalytic activity , accessibility to active sites, electron transfer , and anti-poisoning stability. For the first time, ordered mesoporous carbon (OMC) is used as the substrate for Pd–PdO catalyst for fuel cells. The unique ordered pore-channel network of OMC can enhance the spatial dispersion of Pd nanoparticles on the pore-channel wall, while the hollow pore-channel can facilitate reactant transport. Microwave and annealing treatments are found to enhance the chemical reduction and to strengthen the anchoring of Pd–PdO catalyst on OMC substrate, respectively. The OMC supported Pd–PdO catalyst (Pd–PdO/OMC) shows 1.7-fold and an order of magnitude higher mass activity and stability as compared to commercial Pd/C catalyst. For fuel cell testing, the Pd–PdO/OMC catalyst is applied to an air-breathing microfluidic fuel cell and achieves a maximum power density of 63.0 mW cm −2 , at least one-fold higher than similar previous reports.

Low detection limit and high sensitivity NO2 gas sensor based on PdO/NiMoO4/NiO ternary composite materials

Zhang Saisai,Liu Shijie,Xing Mingli,Zhang Bo,Zhang Bowen,Wang Na Luo Yan

Developing nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) gas sensors that simultaneously deliver high sensitivity, selectivity, and long‑term stability remains a considerable challenge for practical applications. In this work, nanoflower‑like PdO/NiMoO 4 /NiO composites with tunable PdO loadings were fabricated via a hydrothermal method combined with in‑situ impregnation and annealing. The constituent nanosheets measure approximately 200 nm in length and 20 nm in thickness. The optimized sensor with 0.5 wt% PdO loading achieves a response of 59.94 toward 1 ppm NO 2 at 160 °C, representing a 3.7‑fold enhancement over the unmodified NiMoO 4 /NiO sensor, along with good selectivity and long‑term stability. This performance improvement is attributed to the synergistic effects of heterojunction formation and PdO catalytic activation, which facilitate charge transfer and surface reaction kinetics. These results demonstrate the potential of the ternary composite for practical NO 2 detection. Graphical The alternative text for this image may have been generated using AI.

Highly dispersed Pd/PdO/Fe2O3 nanoparticles in SBA-15 for Fenton-like processes: confinement and synergistic effects

Xingfa Li,Xin Liu,Lili Xu,Yuezhong Wen,Jianqing Ma,Zucheng Wu

Heterogeneous Pd catalytic Fenton-like systems with in-situ-generated H 2 O 2 have recently gained significant attention for wastewater treatment. Intense research efforts have been focused on developing highly efficient Fenton-like catalysts. It is known that nanoparticle size and appropriate coordination of active compositions are important for the fabrication of a highly efficient multicomponent catalyst. Unfortunately, effects of these factors on Fenton-like reaction are still unknown. To decipher the puzzle, we designed multicomponent Pd/PdO/Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles in SBA-15 (denoted as FePd-SBA) as a Fenton-like catalyst which possesses uniform and highly dispersed nanoparticles (small size about 5   nm) in space-confined channels of SBA-15. The fabricated catalyst shows high catalytic activities in Fenton-like reaction for dye degradation. For example, 98.6% removal of dye Acid Red 73 was obtained under in-situ generation of hydrogen peroxide. In contrast, when the catalyst loaded on SiO 2 without channels or pores (FePd–SiO 2 ) was prepared, and compared with FePd–SBA, FePd–SiO 2 showed noticeably poor performance (51.6%) under same conditions. Obviously, such a difference in results is due to the confinement effect of SBA-15 porous channels. It was also found that Fe and Pd played important roles in the synergistic effect, that is, Pd worked in in-situ H 2 O 2 generation and Fe species worked in decompose H 2 O 2 to degrade organic pollutants. When we applied this catalyst for Fenton-like reaction with addition of H 2 O 2 , it was also found that Pd and PdO played important roles and the synergistic effect between Fe and Pd species actually existed in dye removal. The unique nanostructure makes the catalyst to be a novel and welcoming choice for H 2 O 2 favorite reactions.

Role of Brønsted acid site during catalytic combustion of methane over PdO/ZSM-5: Dominant or negligible?

Qiguang Dai,Qin Zhu,Yang Lou,Xingyi Wang

ZSM-5 zeolites (NaZSM-5, HZSM-5 and Silicalite-1) with different acid nature were synthesized and used as supports of Pd catalysts for catalytic combustion of methane. Moreover, the acid property of the as-synthesized Pd/NaZSM-5 catalyst was adjusted by a NH 4 + ion-exchange process to post-generate Brønsted acid sites and different preparation methods were investigated. The potential roles of Brønsted acid sites (anchoring Pd species or activating methane molecules) were discussed, and the experimental results indicated that the anchoring effect of Brønsted acid sites on Pd species was not directly observed. However, the acid properties of supports (the presence of Al 3+ as Lewis acid sites, especially coordinatively unsaturated Al 3+ ) were crucial for the preparation of Pd/ZSM-5 catalysts with high Pd dispersion. Additionally, although Brønsted acid sites of ZSM-5 was contributed to the activation or even cracking of long-chain alkanes (such as n -decane), the direct adsorption/dissociation of methane on Brønsted acid sites was difficult and depended more on the dispersion and particle size of PdO x . Pd/NaZSM-5 catalyst presented an outstanding durability at low-temperature (350 °C) and high-temperature (800 °C), and the high Si/Al ratio could improve the water-resistance due to its good hydrophobicity, but the reversible deactivation owing to the formation of PdO into Pd(OH) 2 under high concentration of water vapor was still unavoidable.
