Benchmarking Metal Oxide Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Reduction

Siyuan Wang,Yunze Zhang,Jian Wang

Rationally designing highly active electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) without relying on precious metals is critical for promoting the application of metal–air batteries and fuel cells. As a promising alternative to traditional Pt-group-based catalysts, transition-metal oxides (TMOs) with high corrosion resistivity and diverse structure configuration have exhibited great catalytic potential. However, the current favorable ORR performance of TMOs has often been achieved through their coupling with engineered carbons such as graphene and carbon nanotubes, which can obscure the intrinsic catalytic potential of TMOs. To promote TMO-based catalysts for ORR applications, comprehensively analyzing their catalytic properties and screening promising TMO-based parent materials is crucial. Herein to eliminate the research gap, 22 noble-metal-free TMOs (e.g., Co3O4, MnO, and Fe2O3) were benchmarked for ORR catalysis, with Pt/C and RuO2 as comparisons. Nb2O5 demonstrated the greatest potential as an ORR electrocatalyst among all of the studied TMOs, with higher specific activity surpassing that of Pt/C. In addition, it could achieve a larger peak power density than Pt/C in a more practical Zn–air battery setup, showing promise for applications. Regarding stability, most of the studied TMOs exhibited larger losses in limiting current densities than the degradation of half-wave potentials (from 0.65% to 7.54) after the 10,000 cycle accelerated degradation tests, pointing out the direction to improve their ORR stabilities.

Ionic Liquid Modification of High-Pt-Loading Pt/C Electrocatalysts for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell Application

Fengshun Cheng,Yuchen Guo,Xinhong Liang,Fanqiushi Yue,Yichang Yan,Yang Li,Yuanzhi Zhu,Yanping He,Shangfeng Du

Ionic liquid modification for carbon-supported platinum (Pt/C) electrocatalysts to enhance their oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity has been well recognized. However, the research has only been reported on the low-Pt-loading Pt/C electrocatalysts, e.g., 20 wt%, while in practical applications, usually high-Pt-loading Pt/C electrocatalysts of 45–60 wt% are used. In this work, ionic liquid modification is systematically investigated for a Pt/C electrocatalyst with 60 wt% Pt loading for its ORR activity in the cathode in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Various adsorption amounts are studied on the catalyst surface. Different modification behavior is found. Mechanism exploration shows that the adsorption of ionic liquid mainly happens on the Pt electrocatalyst surface and in the micropores of the carbon support. The highest fuel cell power performance is achieved at an ionic liquid loading of 7 wt%, which is much higher than the 3 wt% reported for the low-Pt-loading Pt/C.

In-situ observation of defects evolution of graphene nanoflakes in Pt/C catalyst for boosting ORR performance

Yongqing Shen,Peizhi Liu,Yangrui Li,Jianghong Wu,Yanhui Song,Junjie Guo

The structural stability of supported metal nanoparticles determines the activity and longevity of heterogeneous catalysts. Unfortunately, the chemical/thermal working environment inevitably accelerates metal sintering to larger crystallites that leads to the degradation of catalytic performance. Here, we demonstrate that the distribution of defects in carbon support as an inherent parameter plays a crucial role in catalyst sintering. Based on in-situ transmission electron microscopy studies, the strong metal-support interaction between platinum (Pt) nanoparticles and defect-rich graphene nanoflakes largely suppresses metal sintering up to 700 °C. Particularly, the optimal carbon support can be achieved in the annealing process, in which the mass transfer and charge transport can be enhanced by accurately manipulating the distribution of defects in carbon matrix and graphitization degree. It is worth noting that the screened Pt/GNs-300 exhibits impressive oxygen reduction reaction performance with high half-wave potential (0.91 V), mass activity (108.1 A g –1 Pt ) and excellent stability. By its ascendancy in ORR, the Pt/GNs-300 exhibits a high open-circuit voltage of 1.41 V and a maximum power density of 198.6 mW cm −2 in Zn-air battery, implying its brilliant practicability. This work paves a pathway for achieving sinter-resistant metal-loaded catalysts in energy electrocatalysis.

Formic-Acid In Situ Hydrogen Enables Programmable Ru–Pd–Pt/C Trimetallic Interfaces for Durable Acidic HER

Liangmeng Ni,Aiyue Huang,Xin Feng,Zhijia Liu

Proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis demands hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) cathodes that minimize precious-metal usage while remaining durable in strongly acidic media, yet improving Pt utilization and stability under reduced PGM loading remains challenging. Here, we develop a programmable nucleation pathway that uses in situ H* from formic acid (HCOOH) dehydrogenation at a Ru–Pd interface to gate reducing equivalents during nucleation. This enables site-confined Pt nucleation/immobilization and stabilizes a hydrogen-management interface for H* generation, relay, and recombination. The resulting Ru–Pd–Pt/C comprises uniformly dispersed ternary nanodomains (~2.46 nm). In 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 , Ru–Pd–Pt/C delivers η 10 = 12.24 mV, an apparent Tafel slope of 29.9 mV dec −1 from a unified 20–50 mV fitting window, and a PGM mass activity of 6.58 A mg PGM −1 at η = 50 mV. More importantly, membrane electrode assembly tests under identical assembly conditions show lower cell voltages than commercial 40 wt% Pt/C over 1–4 A cm −2 and stable operation at 1 A cm −2 . Density functional theory calculation shows Ru/Pd neighbors tune Pt toward near-thermoneutral H adsorption (ΔG H* = −0.19 eV), consistent with density of states/d-band shifts and the improved apparent HER response. This formation-stage programming offers a transferable framework for durable, low-PGM HER cathodes in acidic water electrolysis.

Highly sensitive amperometric Nafion-based CO sensor using Pt/C electrodes with different kinds of carbon materials

Yehui Guan,Fangmeng Liu,Bin Wang,Xue Yang,Xishuang Liang,Hui Suo,Peng Sun,Yanfeng Sun,Jian Ma,Jie Zheng,Yue Wang,Geyu Lu

In this paper, a novel amperometric CO sensor using Nafion and Pt/C composite electrodes was fabricated. Three kinds of carbon materials (carbon fibers, multiwall carbon nanotubes and carbon blacks) were utilized as the supports of the sensing and reference electrodes for the CO sensors. The results revealed that the effective Pt loadings on the electrodes increased in the following order: carbon fibers (CFs)   >   multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)   >   carbon blacks (CBs), leading to the increasing of the sensitivities toward CO in same order. In other words, the sensor using Pt/CFs as the sensing electrode (SE) showed the highest sensitivity with the value of 0.077   μA/ppm and shortest response time in the range of CO concentration from 1 to 200   ppm at room temperature . Further, a reproducible and stable response against 50   ppm CO was obtained for the sensor with Pt/CFs SE materials . Moreover, a low detection limit of 0.1   ppm for CO was also examined, suggesting that the sensor can be convenient for detecting very low traces of CO.

SO2-tolerant and H2O-promoting Pt/C catalysts for efficient NO removal via fixed-bed H2-SCR

Tu Baosheng,Shi Nian,Sun Wei,Cao Limei,Yang Ji

In this paper, Pt supports on carbon black powder (Vulcan XC-72) were synthesized via a hydrothermal method for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with H 2 in the presence of 2 vol% O 2 over a wide temperature of 20–300 °C. The results showed that the 3 and 5 wt% Pt/C catalysts resulted in high NO conversion (>90 %) over a temperature range of 120 to 300 °C, and the maximum NO conversion of 98.6 % was achieved over 5 wt% Pt/C at 120 °C. Meanwhile, the influence of SO 2 and H 2 O on the catalyst performance of 3 wt% Pt/C was investigated. The catalysts exhibited good SO 2 poisoning resistance when the SO 2 concentration was lower than 260 ppm. Moreover, a positive effect on NO conversion was detected with the addition of 3 and 5 vol% H 2 O in the feed gas stream. TEM image and good NO conversion performance of the Pt/C catalysts

A stepwise-designed Rh-Au-Si nanocomposite that surpasses Pt/C hydrogen evolution activity at high overpotentials

Jiang Binbin,Yang Lulu,Liao Fan,Sheng Minqi,Zhao Haozhe,Lin Haiping,Shao Mingwang

Hydrogen evolution by electrocatalysis is an attractive method of supplying clean energy. However, it is challenging to find cheap and efficient alternatives to rare and expensive platinum based catalysts. Pt provides the best hydrogen evolution performance, because it optimally balances the free energies of adsorption and desorption. Appropriate control of these quantities is essential for producing an efficient electrocatalyst. We demonstrate, based on first principles calculations, a stepwise designed Rh-Au-Si ternary catalyst, in which adsorption (the Volmer reaction) and desorption (the Heyrovsky reaction) take place on Rh and Si surfaces, respectively. The intermediate Au surface plays a vital role by promoting hydrogen diffusion from the Rh to the Si surface. Theoretical predictions have been explored extensively and verified by experimental observations. The optimized catalyst (Rh-Au-SiNW-2) has a composition of 2.2:28.5:69.3 (Rh:Au:Si mass ratio) and exhibits a Tafel slope of 24.0 mV·dec –1 . Its electrocatalytic activity surpasses that of a commercial 40 wt.% Pt/C catalyst at overpotentials above 0.19 V by exhibiting a current density of greater than 108 mA·cm –2 . At 0.3 V overpotential, the turnover frequency of Rh-Au-SiNW-2 is 10.8 times greater than that of 40 wt.% Pt/C. These properties may open new directions in the stepwise design of highly efficient catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER).

Bead-Like Pt/C-Ionomer Porous Nanofibrous Networks Toward Advanced Electrochemical Reaction Management for Direct Methanol Fuel Cells

Ruili Sun,Dongming Zhu,Nan Wu,Yi Li,Ting Chen,Shaorong Wang

Efficient management for electrochemical reactions within Pt/C electrodes, specifically the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and methanol oxidation reactions (MOR), is critical to the performance and long-life stability of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). Optimizing the hierarchical macro/mesoscale structures of Pt/C electrodes plays a decisive role in regulating the mass transport pathways and electrochemical reactions. In this work, bead-like Pt/C-ionomer hybrid porous nanofibrous networks are constructed via electrospinning. Ascribing to the hierarchical architecture consisting of continuous nanofibers and bead-like Pt/C-ionomer fibrous networks, the hybrid porous nanofibrous electrode exhibits a 55% increase in maximum mass power density in comparison to the conventional Pt/C electrode. Such enhancement is attributed to excellent ORR activity enabled by efficient triple-phase reaction regions, coupled with superior MOR tolerance resulting from restricted methanol transport from the hybrid porous nanofibrous electrode to triple-phase reaction regions.

Boosting Methanol Electrooxidation on Pt/C with a Metal-Free Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Cocatalyst via the Ripple Effect

Jiawen Li,Lu Hao,Fangge Cheng,Mansor Hussain,Yuan Fu,Xinyi Ma,Jia Liu

Platinum-based catalysts are the core components for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). Although platinum catalysts on nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) show promising MOR activity, the coupled variation between Pt and NC during synthesis obscures their individual contributions. Herein, a solid-phase interface reaction (SIR) successfully decouples their interactions, clarifying the role of each component. We define the ripple effect as the long-range electronic modulation induced by Pt–N coordination, which modulates the electronic state of Pt active sites in a long-range manner and thus significantly accelerates MOR reaction kinetics. Based on this, a metal-free catalytic promoter was developed. When combined with commercial 5 wt% Pt/C, the resulting Pt/C@NC-6hr composite exhibits 1.67 times and twice the mass activity of 5 and 20 wt% Pt/C. Furthermore, statistical results indicate that the mass activity derived solely from the Pt on NC is 4.74 times higher than that of the original 5 wt% Pt/C catalyst, demonstrating a remarkably substantial activity enhancement. After 3600 s chronoamperometry at 0.75 V (vs. RHE), it maintains superior current density. This work elucidates the mechanism of microenvironment-enhanced Pt catalysis via the ripple effect and offers a practical strategy for improving commercial Pt/C. Graphical Solid-phase interface reaction triggers Pt nanoparticle migration, while the resulting Pt-N coordination induces a a long-range electronic modulation effect (ripple effect) that significantly accelerates methanol oxidation reaction kinetics.

Activating the passivated Ir sites in 3R-IrO2 by intercalating Pt atoms for enhanced oxygen reduction reaction activity

Ruiqi Guo,Zhenglong Fan,Qiwei Zhou,Mengjie Ma,Wenxiang Zhu,Fan Liao,Hao Yang,Jiajie Wang,Zhenhui Kang,Minqi Sheng

Iridium oxide (IrO 2 ) has traditionally been considered to exhibit limited oxygen-reducing capacity. An effective approach to improve the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity in parent catalytic materials is through atomic intercalation. However, the challenge lies in achieving a delicate balance between high ORR activity, structural stability, and minimizing the use of precious metals. Herein, we fabricate 3R-phase iridium oxide (3R-IrO 2 ) with superior ORR activity by intercalating a tiny amount of Pt (3.6 wt% Pt) into the interlayers of 3R-IrO 2 (3.6 wt% Pt-3R-IrO 2 ). When employed as an acidic ORR electrocatalyst, 3.6 wt% Pt-3R-IrO 2 shows a high half-wave potential (E 1/2 ) of 0.92 V (vs. RHE) in O 2 -saturated 0.1 M HClO 4 electrolyte, much better than those of Pt/C (0.850 V), 3R-IrO 2 (0.616 V), and Pt nanoparticles on 3R-IrO 2 surface (3.6 wt% Pt@3R-IrO 2 ) (0.618 V) electrocatalysts. It achieves high mass activity of 0.170 A mg Ir −1 at the potential of 0.9 V, which is 5.5 and 11.3 times than that of Pt/C (0.031 A mg Ir −1 ) and 3.6 wt% Pt@3R-IrO 2 (0.015 A mg Ir −1 ), respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experiment results co-jointly demonstrate that the active center of Pt-3R-IrO 2 is anchored to the activated Ir atoms of the 3R-IrO 2 rather than Pt atoms. The d -band center of Ir 5 d orbitals of Pt-3R-IrO 2 is simultaneously regulated, which optimizes the energy barrier of adsorption/desorption toward the ORR process. Intriguingly, the intercalation of Pt atoms into trigonal rhodium oxide (Tri-RhO 2 ) also activates the ORR activity of Rh, suggesting the universality of this strategy. This discovery may provide a new and general way for activation of ORR activity of other precious metal-intercalated nonprecious metal oxide electrocatalysts.

Pd hydride metallene aerogels with lattice hydrogen participation for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction

Wang Hengjia,Qin Ying,Wu Yu,Qiu Yiwei,Ling Ling,Fang Qie,Wang Canglong,Hu Liuyong,Gu Wenling,Zhu Chengzhou

Hydrogen adsorption and desorption in single-phase catalysts often occur at a single catalytic site based on the traditional hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) pathway, which makes it difficult to break the limitation entailed by the Sabatier principle. Herein, β-Pd hydride metallene (β-PdHene) aerogels are synthesized as advanced HER catalysts. A lattice hydrogen-involved mechanism is reported to separate adsorption and desorption sites, which is thermodynamically favorable compared to the traditional reaction pathway. In situ differential electrochemical mass spectrometry and theoretical calculations reveal that lattice hydrogen as additional active sites directly participate in the HER process. Consequently, β-PdHene aerogels exhibit a low overpotential of only 20 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and remarkable HER stability, which are even comparable to commercial Pt/C. Our work opens an avenue to rationally develop highly active HER catalysts, bypassing the design limitations of catalysts under traditional mechanisms.

Effect of Pt/C addition to TiO2 films on adhesion and rapid light-induced detachment of mammalian cell cultures

Kui Cheng,Xiaozhao Wang,Wenjian Weng,Jun Lin,Huiming Wang

Light-induced cell detachment on the substrate of TiO 2 nanodots has been proved to be a safe and attractive method for cell harvesting in tissue engineering. In order to improve the cell release efficiency, bioinert platinum with excellent charge transport loading in biocompatible graphite was prepared. 20   wt.% Pt/C powder showing excellent electrical, chemical and bioactive properties was incorporated to a TiO 2 system. We investigated the biocompatibility of Pt/C–TiO 2 composite films with different amounts of Pt/C with C/tetrabutyl titanate molar ratio varying from 0 to 0.42. The adhesion and proliferation rates of pre-osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 cells (mouse calvaria-derived) on the films prepared with the highest C/TiO 2 molar ratio are higher than that of the pure TiO 2 and other films, indicating a Pt/C dose-dependent effect. It is shown that the detachment efficiency of MC3T3-E1 cells depends on Pt/C amount and UV illumination time. Moreover, films prepared with C/tetrabutyl titanate molar ratio of 0.42 showed 93% cell detachment ratio within 5   min of UV illumination, while bare TiO 2 films only reached 75%, indicating an improved cell release efficiency by the incorporation of Pt/C. However, an interesting phenomenon was found that longer illumination time showed lower detachment ratios to some extent, which is contrary to our previous work. It is believed that this work presents the improved cell detachment efficiency by the incorporation of Pt/C.
