Incorporation of Ag on stable Pt/CeO2 for low-temperature active and high-temperature stable CO oxidation catalyst

Haoyu Liu,Yanran Cui,Minglu Zhu,Yugang Fu,Yue Sun,Zhen Meng,Bo Peng,Lei Nie

Advanced engine technologies and environmental restrictions require new-generation automotive catalysts to be low-temperature (LT) active and high-temperature (HT) stable simultaneously. Here, incorporation of Ag over high temperature (800 °C) treated Pt/CeO 2 was applied to address the challenge. Strong Pt-O-Ce bonds in Pt/CeO 2 helped improve thermal stability dramatically. Detailed reaction kinetics analysis indicated Eley-Rideal (ER) mechanism for Ag/CeO 2 catalysts and Mars-van Krevelen (Mvk) mechanism for both Pt/CeO 2 and Ag/Pt/CeO 2 catalyst. After calcined at 800 °C, CO adsorbed on ionic Pt site could be readily oxidized by neighbouring oxygen species at a temperature as low as 132 °C over Ag/Pt/CeO 2 , about 60 °C lower than Pt/CeO 2 and Ag/CeO 2 . Raman spectroscopy and XPS results suggested that incorporation of Ag created more oxygen defects over Pt/CeO 2 and oxygen species on Ag nanoparticles might be more active than bare Pt/CeO 2 which would enhance the low-temperature activity for Ag/Pt/CeO 2 . It might be an effective and cost-efficient approach to develop new catalysts for vehicle emission oxidation.

Multifunctional Pt-CeO2-CNT composite membranes for high-performance PEM water electrolysis with reduced H2 permeation and enhanced chemical durability

Runcheng Zhang,Zhuolin Yuan,Xutao Qiu,Zhiyan Rui,Xiaoyun Shi,Jia Li,Aidong Tan,Jianguo Liu

Proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis efficiency can be significantly enhanced by reducing the membrane thickness; however, this approach leads to excessive H2 permeation into O2 (HiO), causing serious safety hazards and accelerated degradation. This study presents a novel thin (about 60 μm) composite membrane incorporating Pt and CeO2 nanoparticles supported on carbon nanotubes (Pt-CeO2-CNT/Nafion) to address these challenges. The catalysts embedded in the membrane exhibit synergistic multifunctional effects at the microscopic level. CeO2 transfers electrons to Pt through metal–support interactions, enhancing the H2–O2 recombination activity. Oxygen vacancies in CeO2 effectively scavenge free radicals (H˙, HO2˙, HO˙, etc.). CNTs serve as stable anchoring sites, preventing Ceδ+ migration and membrane poisoning. At the macroscopic level, Pt-CeO2-CNT/Nafion maintains superior electrochemical performance with an electrolysis voltage of 1.746 V at 3.0 A cm−2. Meanwhile, the HiO concentration remains below 0.7% across all tested current densities, and the F− release rate decreases by 3.8-fold compared to Pt-CNT/Nafion during long-term operation, indicating improved safety and durability. This work provides both fundamental insights and practical strategies for developing next-generation thin PEMs suitable for industrial applications.

Preparation of hollow double-layer Pt@CeO2 nanospheres as oxidase mimetics for the colorimetric-fluorescent-SERS triple-mode detection of glutathione in serum

Yiquan Liao,Yichang He,Bin Zhang,Ye Ma,Minggang Zhao,Ruiqi Xu,Hongzhi Cui

Glutathione (GSH) is an essential antioxidant in the human body, but its detection is difficult due to the interference of complex components in serum. Herein, hollow double-layer Pt@CeO 2 nanospheres were developed as oxidase mimetics, and the light-assisted oxidase mimetics effects were found. The oxidase activity was enhanced significantly by utilizing the synergistic effect of Schottky junction and the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of Pt under UV light . A novel GSH colorimetric-fluorescent-SERS sensing platform was established, with the sensing performance notably boosted by using the light-assisted oxidase mimetics effects. This platform boasts an exceptionally low detection limit (LOD) of 0.084 μM, while the detection time was shortened from 10 min to just 2 min. The anti-interference detection with high recovery rate (96.84%–107.4 %) in real serum made it be promising for practical application.

Single-atom Au-modified CeO2 catalyst: Structure and its catalytic performance in 2,4-diaminotoluene methoxycarbonylation reaction

Lu Ji,Fang Li,Conghui Che,Wei Xue,Qiusheng Yang,Xiaoshu Ding,Dongsheng Zhang,Xinqiang Zhao,Yanji Wang

In the reaction of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) and 2,4-diaminotoluene (TDA), Au/CeO 2 exhibits higher selectivity than CeO 2 for dimethyl toluene-2,4-dicarbamate (TDC). However, its catalytic activity drops after H 2 reduction (denoted as Au/CeO 2 -R). The characterization results illustrate that Au exists as a single atom with the primary species as Au δ+ in Au/CeO 2 , forming Ce x Au 1−x O 2 structure similar to solid solution. Whereas for Au/CeO 2 -R catalyst, Au mainly exists as Au 0 , forming the Au-O-Ce structure on CeO 2 surface. Significantly, the strong interaction between Au and CeO 2 increases Ce 3+ and oxygen vacancies content, as well as modulates their acidic property. However, the catalytic activity of Au/CeO 2 -R is found to be lower than Au/CeO 2 as the species formed by DMC dissociation on its surface are not easily desorbed. Other transition metals supported on CeO 2 are also prepared, wherein Pt/CeO 2 and Pd/CeO 2 exhibit good TDC selectivity. In the end, the electronegativity and catalytic activity of metals are correlated.

Boosted low-temperature C3H8 oxidation and sulfur resistance of Pt/CeO2 via post Co3(PO4)2 modification: Synergy of interfacial electronic modulation and phosphate-derived acidity

He Xu,Xinyu Wang,Jingjing Wang,Jingyao Wang,Yujie Liu,Lianghui Xia,Yingying Yong,Yanfei Jian,Reem Albilali,Chi He

The widely presented industrial light alkanes (LAs) have posed significant hazards to the environment and human health; however, the efficacious catalytic purification of LAs is still greatly suffered from their strong chemical stability and catalyst deactivation due to the presence of sulfur-containing impurity in practical exhausts. Herein, cobalt phosphate (Co 3 (PO 4 ) 2 )-modified Pt/CeO 2 catalysts (Pt/CeO 2 - x CP) with boosted activity and sulfur resistance were rationally engineered. Results revealed that Pt/CeO 2 -0.2CP shows the highest C 3 H 8 oxidation activity with 90 % of which oxidized at 260 °C and apparent activation energy ( E a ) of 84.39 kJ∙mol −1 , obviously lower than that of Pt/CeO 2 . Remarkably, the activity of Pt/CeO 2 -0.2CP is well-maintained in 24 h of successive operation with the co-existence of 250 H 2 S, while over 20 % of C 3 H 8 conversion reduction can be found over Pt/CeO 2 due to the deactivation of Pt 4+ active sites by surface sulfation. The Co 3 (PO 4 ) 2 -Pt interface promotes the electron transfer from Pt δ+ to phosphorus component and weakens the Pt-O-Ce bond, thereby generating more highly active Pt 4+ sites and oxygen vacancy, polarizing the electron cloud around the C-H bond and oxygen molecules and promoting C 3 H 8 oxidation. Meanwhile, the Co 3 (PO 4 ) 2 modification optimizes the surface acidity of Pt/CeO 2 -CP, effectively weakens the adsorption and oxidation of H 2 S, and maintains the formation and consumption of high active oxygen species, resulting in strong sulfur resistance. This work provides important insights for the rational design of efficient sulfur-tolerant catalysts towards LAs purification under harsh conditions.
