Stable acidic ethanol electrolysis via in-situ formation of Pt/Ni(III) catalytic interfaces for hydrogen and chemicals co-production

Yang Wang,Yiling Feng,Yuxin Zhu,Yizhen Li,Chengjin Chen,Nanjia Yang,Wei Zhu,Zhongbin Zhuang

The electrochemical ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) in acid offers a promising route for co-producing hydrogen and value-added chemicals, but suffers from severe Pt catalyst poisoning and poor stability. Herein, we report the synthesis of ultrathin PtNi nanowires (NWs) with abundant step defects for efficient and stable EOR. The PtNi NWs/C catalyst exhibits high mass activity (1.50 A mg Pt −1 @0.7 V vs. RHE), Faradaic efficiency (80% to acetic acid), and stability compared to the Pt NWs/C and Pt NPs/C counterparts. It has been demonstrated that the ultrathin NW structure endowed the PtNi NWs/C with high electrochemical active surface area and abundant step sites, while the incorporation of Ni facilitates the removal of poisoning CO and accelerates the EOR kinetics on Pt via the in-situ formation of Ni(III), leading to the superior performance. A practical electrolyzer using the PtNi NW as the anodic catalyst achieves 132 mA cm −2  at 0.8 V and sustains operation for 100 h.

Cross-double dumbbell-like Pt–Ni nanostructures with enhanced catalytic performance toward the reactions of oxygen reduction and methanol oxidation

Wenhao Gong,Zheng Jiang,Rifeng Wu,Yang Liu,Lei Huang,Ning Hu,Panagiotis Tsiakaras,Pei Kang Shen

Investigating on well-defined structure-engineering and atomic arrangement of fuel cell catalysts with high activity has attracted considerable research interest the last decade. Specially, unique nanostructures, which possess high surface-to-volume ratio and high atomic utilization have been emerged as promising candidate catalysts. Herein, we have successfully synthesized Pt–Ni cross double dumbbell-like nanostructures (Pt-Ni CDDNs) via a facile one-pot synthesis route and a kinetic control with surface capping. It is found that the as-prepared Pt–Ni alloy nanostructures exhibit an enhanced catalytic activity toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) in comparison with commercial Pt/C catalysts. The excellent electrooxidation property is attributed to the synergistic effect between Pt and Ni atoms, as well as high specific surface area of dumbbell-like nanostructures with multiple nanosheets . The present work provides new opportunities for the rational design of bimetallic nanomaterials with enhanced catalytic performance.

Glycerol Stabilized NaBH4 Reduction for Preparation Carbon Supported Pt-Ni Alloy Nanoparticles Used as Oxygen-Reduction Electrocatalysts for Microbial Fuel Cells

Zhong Wang,Zhenhua Yan,Min Wang,Jinsheng Zhao

The high cost and insufficient catalytic activity of carbon-supported Pt nanoparticle catalysts are two main problems in the commercial deployment of microbial fuel cell (MFC). In an effort to address these barriers, three carbon-supported Pt-Ni alloy electrocatalysts with varying Pt:Ni atom ratios (Pt 3 -Ni/C, Pt 2 -Ni/C, Pt-Ni/C) were prepared by simple NaBH 4 reduction in glycerol at room temperature. All of the prepared Pt-Ni alloy nanoparticles (NPs) are highly dispersed on a carbon support and show a single-phase face-centered cubic structure with a particle size of 2.4-3.0 nm. The electrocatalytic performances of the synthesized Pt-Ni alloy catalysts were compared with that of commercial Pt/C by cyclic voltammetry and linear sweep voltammetry; among these NPs, the Pt 2 -Ni/C catalyst exhibits the highest activity for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in 0.1M HClO 4 . As the cathode catalyst, the maximum power density produced from MFC with Pt 2 -Ni/C (1724 mW m -2 ) was 22% higher than that with commercial Pt/C (1413 mW m -2 ).

Plasma-Assisted Synthesis of Oxygen-Deficient Pt-Ni(OH)2/NF for Coupled Hydrogen Evolution and Electro-Reforming of PET Plastic

Chenkun Zheng,Jianan Li,Dong Zhang,Yi Liu,Yin Wang,Xiaodi Wang,Yun-Xiang Pan,Chong Peng

Coupling the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with PET-derived ethylene glycol oxidation reaction (EGOR) offers an energy-saving route for hydrogen production and plastic upcycling. However, Pt-based bifunctional catalysts are limited by inefficient Pt utilization, nonideal H* adsorption, and anodic oxidation-induced deactivation. Here, we report an oxygen-deficient D-Pt-Ni(OH)2/NF catalyst prepared by dielectric barrier discharge plasma treatment and integrated with an alternating-pulse electrolysis strategy. Plasma treatment introduces abundant oxygen vacancies and promotes electron transfer from Ni to Pt, downshifting the Pt d-band center and optimizing H* adsorption. The optimized catalyst requires only 12 mV to reach 10 mA cm–2 for HER and delivers a Pt mass activity of 3.23 A mg–1Pt at –0.1 V vs RHE, which is 64.6 and 1.68 times higher than those of Pt/C and untreated Pt-Ni(OH)2/NF, respectively. In an HER||EGOR electrolyzer, D-Pt-Ni(OH)2/NF achieves 100 mA cm–2 at 0.96 V using PET hydrolysate. Alternating-pulse electrolysis suppresses Pt oxidation and enables stable 100 h operation in a membrane-free flow electrolyzer, with >90% Faradaic efficiency for glycolic acid and nearly 100% Faradaic efficiency for H2. Techno-economic analysis indicates a net profit of $1080.1 per ton of PET processed. This work demonstrates a catalyst–electrolysis co-engineering strategy that links plasma-induced electronic modulation with durable plastic valorization-assisted hydrogen production.

Pt–Co and Pt–Ni hollow nanospheres supported with PEDOT:PSS used as high performance counter electrodes in dye-sensitized solar cells

Min Zheng,Jinghao Huo,Binguo Chen,Yongguang Tu,Jihuai Wu,Linhua Hu,Songyuan Dai

Binary alloy platinum–cobalt (Pt–Co) and platinum–nickel (Pt–Ni) hollow nanospheres are prepared by using a simple solution reaction method. Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxy thiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) as supported layer further enhance the binary platinum alloy electrochemical properties. The prepared binary platinum alloys are observed with hollow nanosphere structure. The cyclic voltammogram and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurement indicate that Pt–Co and Pt–Ni hollow nanospheres on PEDOT:PSS (PC-PP and PN-PP) electrodes have high conductivity and catalytic performance. Under simulated white solar light irradiation with intensity of 100   mW   cm −2 (AM 1.5), the dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) based on PCPP and PNPP counter electrodes achieve power conversion efficiencies of 9.02% and 8.23%, respectively, which are higher than the efficiency for the DSSC based on Pt counter electrode (7.96%).

Tailoring Pt-Ni/Fe Coordination in Single-Atom Pt/NiFe LDH With Facile Synthesis for Efficient and Long-Term Alkaline Water Electrolysis

Zi-Ye Liu,Jiu-Jiu Ge,Lei Yu,Sian-Hong Ong,Lian-Jian Zhang,Ji-Ming Hu

Efficient and durable alkaline water electrolysis at industrial current densities remains a key challenge due to sluggish oxygen evolution kinetics and poor stability of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts in alkaline media. Herein, a unique Pt–Ni/Fe coordinated single-atom Pt catalyst anchored on nickel-iron layered double hydroxide (ePt/NiFe LDH), is reported synthesized via a facile electrodeposition process within 30 min. Unlike the conventional Pt-O-M (metal) coordination, the newly discovered Pt–Ni/Fe bonding structure significantly modulates the electronic structure of the NiFe active sites, thereby synergistically enhancing both HER and OER activities. Benefiting from this optimized coordination environment and the nanoflower architecture, the ePt/NiFe LDH@e-nf electrode delivers outstanding overall water splitting performance, achieving a low cell voltage of 1.42 V at 10 mA cm −2 and 1.54 V at 100 mA cm −2 without iR compensation. More importantly, it maintains ultrastable operation over 1440 h at an industrial-level current density of 500 mA cm −2 , outperforming commercial Pt/C–RuO₂ benchmarks. This work demonstrates a promising strategy for designing high-performance and durable single-atom catalysts for practical alkaline water electrolysis applications.

Efficient synthesis of sugar alcohols using a composite trimetallic Pt–Ni–Sn/MWCNTs catalyst based on metal element coordination and valence regulation

Xiao-Jian Zhang,Bao-Juan Dou,Yu-Qi Wang,Fei Yang,Xue Cai,Mian Li,Zhi-Qiang Liu,Yu-Guo Zheng

Functional sugar alcohols are a kind of burgeoning food additives to substitute saccharose due to the prominent biofunctions including moderate sweetness, low calorific values and no influence on blood sugar fluctuation, thus applied widely in food, medical, health protection as well as chemical production. Traditional synthesis of functional sugar alcohols required high temperature and H 2 pressure, as well as leading to low reaction efficiency, side reactions and leaching of toxic metal ions. In the present work, Pt–Ni–Sn/MWCNTs catalyst was obtained using a liquid phase reduction method with the transition metals loading of Pt 3.4%, Ni 0.7%, Sn 0.4%, respectively. The catalyst catalyzed the preparation of xylitol , sorbitol , mannitol and galactitol with the high monosaccharide conversion (>99.5%) and yield (>99.1%) under relatively mild conditions (100 °C, 3.0 MPa H 2 ), which were lower than ever reported. For the 13-batch reuse of Pt–Ni–Sn/MWCNTs, the total conversion of xylose was 99.4% and the total yield of xylitol was 99.2%, the productivity of 103.2 g xylitol per gram of catalyst was also obtained. Besides, no side reactions, no metal ions as well as no changes of pH were observed in the reaction process. Our trimetallic catalyst exhibited valuable potential in functional sugar alcohols production.

Ethylene glycol diethyl ether accelerated in-situ growth of Pt/Ni(OH)2 nanosheets on Ni foam for efficient alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction

Changhui Liang,Hongjun Fan,Aiqun Kong,Mao Peng,Menghui Liu,Weizhuo Xu,Jian Song,Yongxin Li,Jinli Zhang,Yunjie Ding,Z. Conrad Zhang

The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity of Pt-based electrocatalysts in alkaline solution is typically limited by the rate of water dissociation. Herein, we report a facile one-step strategy in the synthesis of Pt/Ni(OH) 2 heterojunction for enhanced HER activity. Ultrathin Ni(OH) 2 nanosheets decorated with uniformly dispersed Pt nanoparticles at average sizes of 2.2 nm are in-situ grown on nickel foam (NF) with binder-free feature under mild conditions due to induction by ethylene glycol diethyl ether, even without adding extra Ni 2+ sources. The synthesized Pt/Ni(OH) 2 /NF shows superior HER activity in 1.0 M KOH solution, achieving low overpotentials of 42, 91, and 114 mV at current densities of 10, 100, and 200 mA cm −2 and outstanding durability for 25 h at 25 mA cm −2 without noticeable Pt agglomeration. This work offers a mechanistic insight into one-step fabrication of Pt/Ni(OH) 2 -based catalyst with high activity and stability for HER.

Synthesis of octahedral Pt–Ni–Ir yolk–shell nanoparticles and their catalysis in oxygen reduction and methanol oxidization under both acidic and alkaline conditions

Tao Yang,Yihui Wang,Wenxian Wei,Xinran Ding,Maoshuai He,Tingting Yu,Hong Zhao,Dongen Zhang

Fuel cells are expected to be one of the most promising alternatives to the increasingly scarce fossil fuels, and Pt is the most commonly used catalyst for anodic and cathodic electrochemical reactions. To realize large-scale commercialization, it is most urgent to improve the efficiency of Pt and reduce the cost. Here, we synthesized an octahedral Pt–Ni–Ir yolk–shell catalyst through stepwise co-deposition (SCD), surface-limited Pt deposition (SLPD) and Ni-coordinating etching (NCE) processes. Experimental studies showed that the catalytic activities of the as-prepared trimetal yolk–shell catalyst were several times higher than that of the commercial Pt/C towards oxygen reduction and methanol oxidization under both acidic and alkaline conditions. This work may be extended to designing other multimetallic functional materials with complex hierarchical nanostructures, which is conducive to greatly enhancing the performance.

Optimization and regulation of catalytic activity and stability: Pt–Ni diamond-shaped pearl nanochains with core-shell structure as high-efficient oxygen reduction reaction catalysts

Xinyi Wang,Yanyan Zhou,Caiyun Chang,Yelin Qiao,Yang Jiang,Miao Gao,Li Hou

The low utilization efficiency and poor stability of carbon-supported Pt nanoparticles (Pt/C) catalyst are two main problems of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC), which can improve the catalytic performance by forming alloys and precisely regulating morphology and structures. Here, we introduced a simple and direct method for synthesizing Pt–Ni diamond-shaped pearl nanochains (Pt–Ni DP-NCs) as efficient electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The alloying with Ni could enhance the catalytic activity, but because of leaching out of Ni during the cathodic reaction process, which causes a poor stability. To achieve the optimal point for both high activity and robust stability, a portion of Ni is selectively etched from Pt–Ni DP-NCs precursor in advance. During the process of de-alloying, Pt atoms with high catalytic activity are exposed to the surface of the nanochain after atomic rearrangement, thus obtaining Pt–Ni etched diamond-shaped pearl nanochains (Pt–Ni EDP-NCs) with 1D core-shell structure, which consisted of Pt–Ni as the core and Pt as the shell. Benefitting from the unique 1D core-shell structure and composition, Pt–Ni EDP-NCs-9 (etched for 9 h) exhibits high catalytic activity and robust stability for ORR. The mass activity of the sample Pt–Ni EDP-NCs-9 is 0.43 A/mg Pt , which is 1.65 times higher than that of the Pt–Ni DP-NCs (0.26 A/mg Pt ), and 2.05 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C (0.21 A/mg Pt ). In addition, the 1D core-shell structure enables Pt–Ni EDP-NCs to be highly stable, which only lost by 8.6% of mass activity after 10,000 long cycles, whereas Pt–Ni DP-NCs suffers from a 34% loss under the same conditions. This work provides a strategic approach for designing efficient Pt-based catalysts that simultaneously modulate activity and stability.

Colorimetric and photothermal dual-mode sensing platform for point-of-care testing of acid phosphatase activity and inhibitor screening based on oxidase-mimetic activity of Pt-Ni alloy nanoparticles

Ting Ting Li,Hui Xi Li,Qiang Yu,Wen Qing Jia,Shu Ting Li,Wei Zhu,Zhen Chen,Lei Han

It is vital to exploit sensitive and portable means for the reliable assay of acid phosphatase (ACP) activity and its inhibitors screening in clinical diagnosis and drug therapy. Herein, the Pt-Ni alloy nanoparticles (Pt-Ni ANPs) with enhanced oxidase-mimetic activity were successfully prepared and applied to oxidize the achromatous 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to blue oxTMB. The oxTMB, as an effective photothermal agent, can transform photon energy to heat under an 808 nm laser illumination. The absorbance and temperature of the reaction solution increased significantly when TMB was oxidized to oxTMB by the oxidase-like Pt-Ni ANPs. However, the ACP can hydrolyze 2-Phospho-L-ascorbic acid trisodium salt (AAP) to produce ascorbic acid (AA), and then the production of AA, as a powerful reductant, can efficiently reduce oxTMB and react with singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) to suppress the oxidase-mimicking activity of Pt-Ni ANPs, causing an obvious decrease in absorption spectrum and temperature of the assay system. A colorimetric and photothermal dual-mode detection platform was established for ACP activity assay by integrating colorimetric and temperature signals. Moreover, the potential application of this strategy was also verified by sensing ACP activity in human serum samples and its inhibitor screening. This dual-mode sensing platform not only improves sensitivity and precision but also meets the needs of diversity detection, which offers new insights for efficient monitoring of ACP activity and inhibitor screening in resource-poor settings.
