Interfacial metal–coordinated bifunctional PtCo for practical fuel cells

Zhongliang Huang,Qi Xiao,Tianyi Ding,Jing Xia,Changhong Zhan,Xiangmin Meng,Chih-Wen Pao,Zhiwei Hu,Wei-Hsiang Huang,Yingru Wang,Nanjun Chen,Liang Cao,Xiaoqing Huang

Platinum (Pt) has been documented as the top-tier fuel cell catalyst, yet it faces a notable challenge regarding its poor CO tolerance and sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), particularly when using CO-contaminated blue and gray H2. Here, we present an interfacial metal coordination strategy to design a bifunctional platinum-cobalt (PtCo) intermetallic catalyst integrated with a tin-nitrogen-carbon (Sn–N–C) support, which forms Pt–Sn–N bonds that substantially boost both ORR activity and CO tolerance. The PtCo/Sn–N–C-made fuel cell achieves a topmost peak power density of 2.11 watts per square centimeter in 100 parts per million (ppm) of CO-containing H2, surpassing all previously reported PEMFCs. In addition, it operates stably at a rated voltage for over 710 hours in 100 ppm of CO/H2-air. This work demonstrates the feasibility of fuel cells directly using CO-contaminated gray & blue H2, paving the way for PEMFC-driven energy vehicles.

MXene-supported PtCo bimetallic catalyst for high-performance methanol oxidation

Chang Si-Jie,Zhang Xin,Wang Rui-Ge,Wang Jun-Kai,Wang Chao-Fan,Zhang Long-Fei,Yu Zhi-Peng,Hu Qian-Ku,Zhou Ai-Guo

The methanol oxidation reaction is a critical half-reaction in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs), but its efficiency is limited by the low activity and poor stability of traditional electrocatalysts. This study reports the development of a high-performance PtCo/Mo 2 CT x catalyst for methanol oxidation in DMFCs. Synthesized by depositing PtCo alloy nanoparticles on Mo 2 CT x sheets prepared via cetyltrimethylammonium bromide-assisted etching of Mo 2 Ga 2 C, the PtCo/Mo 2 CT x catalyst achieved enhanced interlayer spacing and excellent dispersion of active sites. The optimized PtCo/Mo 2 CT x catalyst exhibited remarkable catalytic activity, reaching a mass activity of 2296 mA·mg Pt −1 —6.5 times that of commercial Pt/C. Electrochemical studies confirmed the catalyst’s low charge transfer resistance, high electrochemical surface area, and strong CO anti-poisoning ability. Stability tests showed that the catalyst retained 62.26% activity after 1000 cycles. These improvements are attributed to the synergistic effects between Pt and Co, the conductive and layered structure of Mo 2 CT x , making PtCo/Mo 2 CT x a promising, durable anode material for DMFCs in sustainable energy applications. Void-confinement effects of porous hollow nanostructures boost selectivity and durability of oxygen reduction reaction

Yingxiu Zhao,Ping Zhao,Wen Zhang,Xinyuan Zhou,Qiong Zhang,Yu Miao,Guang-Rui Xu,Lei Wang

Pt-based electrocatalysts are the most efficient materials for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) due to the unfilled d orbitals while suffering from poor selectivity and durability during the 4e - pathway. Herein, we reported a high-performance electrocatalyst of porous hollow carbon nanosphere encapsulated inside with PtCo alloy nanorods (PtCo@PHCNS). Specifically, the PtCo alloy nanorods with a diameter of 6 nm show a nanorod structure, and the hollow carbon nanospheres with a diameter of 400 nm and a wall thickness of 65 nm show a porous structure. Strikingly, the electrochemistry shows that PtCo@PHCNS displays the ORR onset potential ( E onset ) and the half-wave potential ( E 1/2 ) are 0.975 V vs. RHE and 0.885 V vs. RHE under alkaline conditions, respectively. Specifically, PtCo@PHCNS shows enhanced ORR selectivity and durability that originate from the void-confinement effects of porous hollow carbon nanosphere. The strategy describes novel protection with porous carbon materials and obtains a unique electrocatalysis PtCo@PHCNS, providing a promising way for designing and synthesizing high-performance electrocatalysts.

Ultrathin PtCo nanorod assemblies with self-optimized surface for oxygen reduction reaction

Shuqi Hu,Zhen Wang,Hongling Chen,Shuangbao Wang,Xianguo Li,Xinyi Zhang,Pei Kang Shen

Controllable synthesis of Pt-based materials at the nanoscale can efficiently tailor their electrocatalytic performance, enabling enhancement in both activity and durability. Herein, we report the synthesis of ultrathin PtCo nanorod assemblies (NRAs) terminated with high index facets through a grain-boundary corrosion approach. Atomic insight reveals that grain boundaries and other defects are formed in PtCo nanowire assemblies (NWAs) during the hydrothermal reaction . With a further increase in reaction time, selective dissolution at these sites generated PtCo NRAs composed of shorter nanorod assemblies with larger surface areas and high index facets termination. The carbon-supported catalyst of PtCo NRAs exhibits high mass activity of 0.914 A/mg Pt at 0.9 V vs RHE for ORR , 2.4 times higher than those of the smooth PtCo NWAs (0.377 A/mg Pt ), 5.7 times higher than those of the commercial Pt/C (0.161 A/mg Pt ). Most significantly, the PtCo NRAs show high stability with about 25.6% loss of mass activity after 10,000 cycles, while only 22.3% loss of mass activity from 10,000 cycles to 50,000 cycles of accelerated durability test. The high durability is mainly attributed to the jagged surface resulted from the surface reconstruction of PtCo NRAs during the electrochemical process. This self-optimization phenomenon may lead to a new effective long-life electrocatalyst .

Enhancing oxygen reduction reaction in acidic medium: A novel electrocatalyst of Pt–Co embedded in nitrogen-rich carbon nanosheets derived from polypyrrole-g-C3N4

Ravichandran Balamurali,Narayanan Naresh,Ravichandran Sabarinathan,Liu Huiyuan,Zhang Weiqi,Bhuvanendran Narayanamoorthy,Su Huaneng

In this study, PtCo alloy nanoparticles (NPs) were successfully synthesized and deposited on nitrogen-rich carbon nanosheets derived from Polypyrrole-g-C 3 N 4 using a chemical reduction method. This electrocatalyst not only offers enhanced catalytic efficiency but also significantly improves the stability for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in in acidic medium. In terms of electrocatalytic performance, the PtCo/CN@PPY-g-C 3 N 4 catalyst demonstrated a mass activity of 0.378 mA µg Pt −1 at 0.85 V, 0.131 mA µg Pt −1 at 0.9 V and a specific activity of 2.900 mA cm Pt −2 at 0.85 V, 1.004 mA cm Pt −2 at 0.9 V which are respectively 2.3, 2.8 and 10, 12 times higher than those of a commercial 20% Pt/C catalyst (0.166 mA µg Pt −1 at 0.85 V, 0.046 mA µg Pt −1 at 0.9 V and 0.285 mA cm Pt −2 at 0.85 V, 0.079 mA cm Pt −2 at 0.9 V). This indicates superior catalytic activity. Furthermore, after 5000 cycles, the PtCo/CN@PPY-g-C 3 N 4 retained approximately 77% at 0.85 V and 83% at 0.9 V of its initial mass activity, with only a 14 mV decrease in the half-wave potential, whereas commercial 20% Pt/C catalyst retained only 40% at0.85 V and 30% at 0.9 V of its initial mass activity. These enhancements can be attributed to the synergistic effects and strong interactions between the Pt–Co alloy nanoparticles and the carbon nitride support. The findings of this study underscore the potential of PtCo/CN@PPY-g-C 3 N 4 as a viable and efficient alternative to traditional catalysts in electrochemical applications.

Curved Interfaces Enhanced Oxygen Reduction Reaction by PtCo Alloys Anchored MOF-Derived Carbon

Yutong Shi,Zheyan Tang,Hongwei Zhao,Pengyi Sun,Li-Xiang Li,Haifei Liu,Jingang Zheng,Lin Tao,Han Zhang,Fang Di,Sun Chengguo,Zhihao Yao,Yanzhou Qin,Baigang An

The carbon supports employed in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts frequently exhibit crumpled, curled, or other curved morphologies-features. The local microenvironment generated by such curved interfaces and its impact on the electronic structure of active sites as well as reaction kinetics, remain to be studied. Herein, the finite element method was employed to elucidate the evolution of the local catalytic microenvironment during the pyrolysis of ZIF-67 from the perspective of geometric distortion, the results revealed that moderate interfacial curvature can significantly enhance the local electric field strength and promote O 2 enrichment. Guided by the simulation results, MOF-derived carbon with an optimal curved configuration was constructed via control of the pyrolysis temperature. After etching, metal ion adsorption, and H 2 reduction, MOFderived carbon materials loaded with PtCo alloy were obtained (PtCo/NCs). As expected, the PtCo/NCs-900 sample with a moderately curved interface exhibited outstanding ORR performance, with a half-wave potential of 0.831 V, and 91.7% activity retention after 50000 s. Density functional theory calculations demonstrated that the curved interface in PtCo/NCs-900 induces electron redistribution, shifts the d-band center of Pt and optimizes *OH desorption behavior, thereby lowering the O 2 diffusion barrier, facilitating electron transfer, and ensuring sufficient O 2 supply. As an air-cathode catalyst, PtCo/NCs-900 sample delivered a peak power density of 159 mW cm -2 and a specific capacity of 837 mAh g -1 Zn , demonstrating its potential for practical energy applications.

Dealuminated Beta stabilized bimetallic PtCo nanoparticles for oxidative dehydrogenation of propane with CO2

Huan Wang,Xueyin Zhang,Zhipeng Su,Tiehong Chen

Oxidative dehydrogenation of propane in the presence of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) effectively promotes the utilization of alkanes and CO 2 to produce high value-added olefins and carbon monoxide products. In this work, bimetallic PtCo nanoparticles with diameter of 1–2.5 nm loaded on dealuminated nano-Beta zeolite were successfully prepared for propane oxidative dehydrogenation with CO 2 . The silanol groups formed after dealuminization of nano-Beta zeolite acted as the anchoring sites to enhance the dispersion of PtCo nanoparticles , and the introduction of Co further promoted the uniform distribution of Pt, resulting in smaller bimetallic PtCo nanoparticles. By optimizing the Pt/Co ratio, the conversion of propane and CO 2 at 550 °C was as high as 51.8 % and 30.6 %, respectively. The dealuminized Beta supported PtCo nanoparticles exhibited high stability during the reaction, and there was no obvious aggregation of PtCo nanoparticles after 6 h on stream. In this study, the highly efficient catalyst prepared by impregnation method using modified commercial zeolite as the carrier is suitable for large-scale production and shows great practical prospect in the application of propane oxidative dehydrogenation with CO 2 .

Tuning Pt-Co electronic interaction in PtCo/La2O2CO3 toward enhanced selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde

Zhiying Qiu,Yu Fang,Ting Xiong,Luna Ruan,Yixuan Wang,Cheng Chen,Junyuan Xu,Chao Liu,Zhiqing Yang,Hengqiang Ye,Lihua Zhu

The selective hydrogenation of α, β-unsaturated aldehydes to unsaturated alcohols is of great industrial significance, yet the development of highly active and stable catalysts remains a substantial challenge. This study employs hydrothermal and sodium borohydride reduction methods to synthesize high-performance PtCo/La 2 O 2 CO 3 catalysts for cinnamaldehyde selective hydrogenation. The electronic interaction between Pt and Co (electrons transferring from Pt to Co) can be precisely tailored by adjusting Pt and Co contents, which effectively modulates activation behavior of H 2 on the catalyst surface. This electronic modulation leads to distinguished catalytic activity, with PtCo/La 2 O 2 CO 3 -3 (Pt-1.75 wt%, Co-0.45 wt%) exhibiting the weakest Pt-Co interaction and thus achieving the excellent catalytic performance (cinnamaldehyde conversion-97.7%, cinnamyl alcohol selectivity-90.7%) under mild conditions (60 °C, 1.5 h, 2.0 MPa H 2 ). This study elucidates the synergistic mechanisms in PtCo bimetallic catalysts and establishes a versatile strategy for designing efficient multifunctional catalytic systems through the integration of bimetallic synergy.

Defect-rich PtCo multilayer nanobowls for the efficient glycerol electrooxidation and coupled hydrogen evolution

Ruichen Geng,Zhihan Zhang,Rui Zhao,Yingrui Liu,Yinglong Wang,Shuli Yin

A facile one-step strategy synthesizes defect-rich PtCo MNs with unique bowl-shaped metallene architecture. • PtCo MNs achieve outstanding formate Faradaic efficiency of 95.89% for glycerol electrooxidation under alkaline conditions. • The assembled GOR||HER electrolyzer realizes energy-saving co-production of formate and hydrogen at low cell voltages. • DFT and experimental characterizations reveal Pt‑Co electronic modulation optimizes intermediate adsorption and catalytic kinetics. The electrocatalytic glycerol oxidation reaction (GOR) is important for turning excess glycerol from biodiesel byproducts into valuable chemicals. However, the process inevitably generates C 1 -C 3 byproducts, resulting in compromised Faradaic efficiency (FE) and poor selectivity toward target compounds. Remarkable electrocatalytic performance in glycerol conversion is achieved using surface-defective PtCo layered metallene nanobowls (PtCo MNs). This novel catalyst facilitates the conversion of glycerol to formate production with an outstanding Faradaic efficiency ( FE formate ) of 95.89% and a selectivity of 92.36%. The results obtained from density functional theory prove that the addition of Co element can effectively regulate the electronic configuration, promote electron transfer and accelerate the progress of the GOR reaction. This work creates a method for making layered nanobowl structures and enables the design of next-generation electrocatalytic systems. Ultrafine PtCo bimetallic nanoparticles loaded carbon nanoflowers for high performance hydrogen evolution reaction catalysis

Jiamei Liu,Yin Wang,Ying Leng,Hui Sun

A facile and robust strategy is proposed for the fabrication of three-dimensional (3D) carbon nanoflowers (CNFs) based on the intramolecular cyclization-induced self-assembly (ICISA) mechanism of poly(amic acid) (PAA), which efficiently incorporates ultrafine platinum/cobalt (PtCo) bimetallic nanoparticles to form PtCo/CNFs for high performance hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysis in alkaline media. The amphiphilic PAA is synthesized by the condensation polymerization of p -phenylenediamine and pyromellitic dianhydride, which self-assembles into 3D nanoflowers driven by the ICISA. Upon pyrolysis in an inert atmosphere, the structural features of the nanoflowers can be well inherited due to the unique thermal property of PAA, and ultrafine PtCo bimetallic nanoparticles with a size of 1.7 ± 0.5 nm can be efficiently loaded. The XPS shows the electron transfer between Pt, Co atoms and the CNFs, leading to an overpotential of 27.3 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and a mass activity of 4.73 A mg Pt −1 for HER catalysis, superior to commercial Pt/C. Overall, the high porosity, optimized electronic structure and full exposure of active sites, significantly enhance the catalytic performance of the catalyst in alkaline electrolytes.

Bimetallic synergy in the PtCo/MgO catalysts for promoting hydrodeoxygenation of guaiacol to cyclohexanol

Xin Han,Shanguang Xu,Fan Zhang,Ruiying Chai,Shanguo Du,Xiuling Jiao,Dairong Chen,Jie Zhang

Bimetallic catalysts composed of a primary hydrogenation metal with an oxyphilic metal often exhibit superior catalytic performance compared to their single-metal counterparts. This study elucidates the bimetallic synergy of cobalt-modified MgO-supported Pt catalysts for promoting the selective hydrodeoxygenation of guaiacol to cyclohexanol. The incorporation of Co significantly enhanced both the activity and cyclohexanol selectivity of the Pt/MgO catalyst, with performance following a volcanic trend relative to Co content. The optimal catalyst, Pt-15Co/MgO, exhibited remarkable performance, achieving 98 % guaiacol conversion and 96 % cyclohexanol selectivity at 180 °C and 1 MPa H 2 pressure. The addition of Co effectively suppressed the growth of Pt particles and improved Pt dispersion. Moreover, Co modification could induce the electron transfer from Co to Pt and promote the reduction of Pt species, leading to the formation of more active Pt 0 sites beneficial for hydrogen activation. The presence of oxyphilic Co also could promote the adsorption of the guaiacol molecules and enhance hydrogen spillover. Pt and Co exhibited a distinct synergistic effect in the hydrodeoxygenation process: Co sites primarily promoted C–O bond cleavage, while Pt sites facilitated hydrogen activation. This complementary cooperation altered the reaction pathway, lowered the activation energy, and thereby improved the catalytic performance. These findings offer a rational strategy for designing highly efficient bimetallic catalysts and provide theoretical guidance for the catalytic conversion of lignin-derived oxygenates.

High-Pressure Continuous-Flow Synthesis of Carbon-Supported PtCo Nanoparticles for Oxygen Reduction Catalysis

Dongdong He,Yue Hao,Xing Hu,Yibo Liu,Mengyan Shan,Shan Zhu,Kaisheng Ming,Kezhu Jiang,Shijian Zheng

Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) rely on high-performance Pt-based ORR catalysts, but traditional high-pressure hydrothermal batch synthesis suffers from low scalability and batch inconsistency. Herein, we report a high-pressure continuous-flow reactor enabling scalable synthesis of carbon-supported PtCo nanoparticles (PtCo/C) under hydrothermal conditions (270 °C, 5   MPa), achieving a production rate of 400   mg   h -1 . Subsequent annealing induces the formation of an L1 2 ordered structure in PtCo/C-CPA, which exhibits enhanced metallic Pt/Co ratios and optimized electronic properties. Electrochemical measurements showed that PtCo/C-CPA achieves a mass activity (MA) of 0.547   A   mg -1 at 0.9   V (vs. RHE), which is 3.38 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). After 30,000 cycles, the catalyst still retained 75.1% of its initial MA. This strategy integrates high-pressure quality and continuous-flow scalability, offering a robust pathway for industrializing high-performance ORR catalysts.
