Strain effect of PtCu alloy aerogel nanocatalysts on the oxygen reduction reaction enhancement

Kaili Wang,Mingzhe Wang,Qianzhuo Lei,Tingting Zhou,Xijun Liu,Zhen Cao,Zaiyong Jiang,Jia He

Tuning their strain effect of Pt based alloy electrocatalysts is an efficient strategy to enhance the electrocatalytic performance toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Herein, an efficient PtCu alloy aerogels (PtCu AAs) with adjustable Pt/Cu atomic ratio form a subtle lattice contraction, as well as the electrochemical dealloying process created surface defects with abundant active sites. The prepared Pt 1 Cu 2 AAs catalysts with optimal strain effects and accessible surface sites displayed much-enhanced mass activity and specific activity of 1.65 A/mg Pt and 3.96 mA/cm 2 , which are higher than those of the Pt 1 Cu 1 AAs, Pt 1 Cu 3 AAs and commercial Pt/C catalysts, respectively, originating from the optimal strain effect with the moderate degree of lattice shrinkage. Meanwhile, Pt 1 Cu 2 AAs displayed a remarkable stability. This work offers a new strategy to design an efficient ORR electrocatalyst with surface strain and defects by controlling atomic compositions and electrochemical dealloying process for PEMFCs.

Preparation of carbon-supported Pd-decorated PtCu nanoparticles towards formic acid oxidation reaction

Suo Yange,Rong Chenbin,Guo Yuxin,Zhang Zhiguo,Hu Guilin,Xu Yousheng,Zhou Xinfa

This work reports the synthesis of a novel carbon-supported Pd-decorated PtCu nanocatalyst for formic acid oxidation. Without using surfactants or polymers, PtCu alloy was firstly prepared through simply co-reduction of Pt and Cu ions using ethylene glycol and sodium citrate as the reducing and stabilizing reagents. Then, Pd was decorated on the surface of PtCu through spontaneous replacement of Cu by Pd. XRD results suggest that the lattice parameters of the PtCu and Pd-decorated PtCu nanoparticles are smaller than that of Pt. TEM images show that all metallic nanoparticles are well dispersed on the carbon surface. The average particle size of the Pd-decorated PtCu nanoparticles is 2.9 nm. Electrochemical analysis suggests that the carbon-supported Pd-decorated PtCu nanocatalyst exhibits an enhanced activity for formic acid oxidation in comparison with the carbon-supported Pt and carbon-supported PtCu, as well as a high stability in acidic medium.

Etched PtCu nanowires as a peroxidase mimic for colorimetric determination of hydrogen peroxide

Sui Ning,Li Shuai,Wang Yukai,Zhang Qingbo,Liu Shufeng,Bai Qiang,Xiao Hailian,Liu Manhong,Wang Lina,Yu William W.

Etched PtCu nanowires (NWs) were synthesized by a hydrothermal reaction and chemical etching process. The NWs are shown to be viable peroxidase (POx) mimics capable of catalyzing the oxidation of the substrate 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) in the presence of H 2 O 2 to form a blue-green coloration. The mechanism of catalysis was investigated and the results demonstrated that H 2 O 2 is decomposed to form hydroxyl radicals which oxidize TMB in the presence of the NWs. Under optimized conditions, a steady-state kinetic analysis revealed that the NWs possess a stronger affinity for H 2 O 2 and TMB compared to the enzyme horseradish POx. Based on the high POx-like activity, a colorimetric assay for H 2 O 2 was established. Absorbance at 652 nm increases linearly in the 0.1–300 μM H 2 O 2 concentration range, and the detection limit is 0.06 μM (at S/N = 3). The assay was successfully applied to the determination of H 2 O 2 in (spiked) milk and contact lens solution. Furthermore, a highly sensitive test strip was designed which represents a low cost and fast alternative for the visual determination of H 2 O 2 . Schematic presentation of the colorimetric detection of H 2 O 2 . PtCu nanowires (PtCu NWs) can catalyze 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) oxidation by H 2 O 2 to produce blue-green oxidized 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (oxTMB). Based on the color change, test strips were designed for H 2 O 2 detection.

Wavy PtCu alloy nanowire networks with abundant surface defects enhanced oxygen reduction reaction

Fang Dahui,Wan Lei,Jiang Qike,Zhang Hongjie,Tang Xuejun,Qin Xiaoping,Shao Zhigang,Wei Zidong

Bimetallic platinum-copper (Pt-Cu) alloy nanowires have emerged as a novel class of fuel cell electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) due to their intrinsic high catalytic activity and durability, but preparing such electrocatalysts with clean surface via facile method is still a challenge. Herein, PtCu alloy with nanowire networks (NWNs) structure is obtained by a simple modified polyol method accompanied with a salt-mediated self-assembly process in a water/ethylene glycol (EG) mixing media. The formation mechanism of PtCu NWNs including the morphological evolution and the relevant experimental parameters has been investigated systematically. We propose that a micro-interface in H2O-EG media formed with the assistance of disodium dihydrogen pyrophosphate (Na 2 H 2 P 2 O 7 ) and its unique nature of coordinating with Pt 2+ or Cu 2+ play critical roles in the formation of NWNs. When tested as ORR catalyst, the PtCu NWNs /C exhibits much higher activity and durability than that of Pt NWNs /C and commercial Pt/C, even exceeding the target of DOE in 2020. The excellent performance of PtCu NWNs /C could be attributed to the unique structure of NWNs with 2.4 nm ultrathin wavy nanowires and plentiful surface defects and the modified electronic effect caused by alloying with Cu atoms.

Ni2+-Directed Anisotropic Growth of PtCu Nested Skeleton Cubes Boosting Electroreduction of Oxygen

Yafeng Zhang,Kai Ye,Qianru Liu,Juan Qin,Qike Jiang,Bing Yang,Feng Yin

Structure-controlled Pt-based nanocrystals have the great potential to provide a flexible strategy for improving the catalysis of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Here, a new synthetic approach is developed to tune the 3D structure of Pt-based alloys, and switch a synthetic reaction which produces solid PtCu octahedral stars (OSs) to produce PtCu nested skeleton cubes (NSCs) by simple addition of Ni(acac) 2 . In particular, Ni 2+ -guided anisotropic growth is observed to generate the nested skeleton structure in PtCu NSCs. Ni 2+ , though absent from the nanoalloys, not only endows faster Cu reduction kinetics but also acts as a structure-directing agent. Moreover, it is shown that acetic acid treatment of PtCu NSCs/C exposes Pt-rich surface with a fine-tuned Pt d-band center energy and the reduced Cu leaching, resulting in strikingly high activity and stability. Acid-treated PtCu NSCs/C shows a remarkable ORR mass activity of 5.13 A mg Pt –1 , about 26 times higher than commercial Pt/C catalyst. This catalyst also exhibits excellent stability with a lower activity decay of 11.5% and the negligible variation in structure after 10 000 cycles.

Design of Cu-based intermetallic nanocrystals for enhancing hydrogenation selectivity

Hongbo Yu,Weiqiang Tang,Kaijie Li,Hongfeng Yin,Shuangliang Zhao,Shenghu Zhou

Motivated by the high performance of intermetallic compounds with their ordered structures, developing synthetic methods for preparing intermetallic compounds is highly desired. Herein, we report facile syntheses and rational design of the structurally ordered Cu-based intermetallic compounds (CuM (M = Pt, Pd, Au)). To achieve this, intermetallic nanoparticles were synthesized in solution by a butyllithium co-reduction method at 240 °C. The developed wet-chemistry syntheses of ordered intermetallic CuM nanoparticles avoided solid annealing process, and thus relatively small intermetallic nanocrystals were formed. The ordered PtCu nanocatalysts displayed enhanced chemoselectivity relative to the PtCu solid-solution alloy and individual monometallic nanocatalysts for catalytic hydrogenations of a series of substituted nitroaromatics. The DFT-based theoretical calculations for hydrogenations of halonitrobenzenes suggest that the surface geometry of ordered PtCu structures favor the hydrogenation of nitro substituent and disfavor the hydrodechlorination by-reaction, resulting in enhanced chemoselectivity.

Constructing efficient PtCu active species via surface Si-OH-modulation for enhanced propane dehydrogenation

Qian Li,Tong Yu,Tangze Deng,Jie Zhang,Jinwei Chen,Gang Wang,Zongbo Shi,Runsheng Zhuo,Ruilin Wang

Surface hydroxyl modulation on S-1 enables the rational design of PtCu catalyst. • Surface OH modulates particle surface density and promotes PtCu interaction. • The optimal 0.5Pt2Cu/S-1–950 demonstrated an approving PDH activity. Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) is a promising approach for propylene production. However, Pt-based catalysts suffer from severe coke deposition and metal sintering at high temperature, thus leading to a rapid deactivation and low propylene yield. Herein, a surface hydroxyl (OH) strategy is developed to modulate the dispersion and configuration of PtCu active sites on silicalite-1 (S-1). The precise regulation of OH density effectively optimizes the particle density of PtCu species. The properly introduced surface OH provides suitable sites to anchor the PtCu active sites with an enhanced catalytic activity and stability. The optimal 0.5Pt2Cu/S-1–950 catalyst achieves an initial propane conversion of 63.4%, propylene space–time yield of 0.60 g g cat. -1 h −1 , and exceptional long-term stability. Moreover, the catalyst also exhibits low coke formation rate with a total coke content of only 1.5 wt% after 6 h of reaction, thereby avoiding the coverage of active sites. The surface Si-OH-modulation offers an effective strategy for constructing high-efficiency Pt-based catalysts with an improved durability for propane dehydrogenation. Electrochemical Annealing Tailors PtCu Interlocked Networks Toward the Sabatier Optimum for Stable Oxygen Reduction

Yiting Song,Heng Liu,Tianrui Xue,Xiaoqing Mao,Yongjun Shen,Di Zhang,Jialin Cui,Hao Li,Huihui Li,Chunzhong Li

Developing durable Pt-based oxygen reduction reaction electrocatalysts is critical for commercializing proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). However, the conventional catalysts easily suffer from structural collapse and metal dissolution. We rationally design PtCu interlocked nanowire networks that synergistically integrate anisotropic 1D nanostructures with compressive lattice strains. This architecture enhances active site accessibility while weakening oxygen species adsorption. Aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) reveals the electrochemical annealing-induced spontaneous welding at interwoven junctions during cycling, converting physical contacts into metallic bonds to resist agglomeration. Concurrent surface reconstruction generates a Pt-rich shell that suppresses internal Cu dissolution. The catalyst achieves mass activity (MA) and specific activity (SA) of 1.68 A mg Pt −1 and 2.14 mA cm −2 at 0.90 V vs. RHE in 0.1 m HClO 4 , respectively, and sustains 93.68% MA after 40 000 accelerated durability testing (ADT) cycles. Mechanistic studies confirm electrochemical annealing simultaneously optimizes the adsorption energy of oxygen-containing species on the catalyst surface and stabilizes the lattice framework. This work establishes electrochemical annealing as a transformative design paradigm for ultra-stable strained nanoarchitectures.

Portable Electrochemical Sensor Using PtCu/Mo2C for the Determination of NO2− in Food Samples

Jingxian Gongye,Jian Hou,Guohao Yin,Minbo Lan,Hongli Zhao

Nitrite (NO2−), a widely used food additive, may pose health risks when consumed in excess, making the development of highly sensitive, rapid, and portable detection methods of great importance. Electrochemical methods have been widely applied to NO2−detection because of their simplicity, low cost, and fast response. In this work, based upon a portable potentiostat (xenSTAT), a NO2−electrochemical sensor has been successfully developed and combined with the modification of PtCu nanospheres on flower-like Mo2C (denoted as PtCu/Mo2C) on screen-printed electrodes (SPEs). Owing to the excellent electrochemical activity and catalytic capability of PtCu/Mo2C, the proposed electrochemical sensor exhibited a wide linear range (10–1000 µM), high sensitivity (0.0229 µA µM−1) and a low detection limit (0.98 µM). Moreover, the sensor was successfully applied for detecting nitrites in sausages and milk, showing also good recovery.

Preparation and Performance of a Cu@PtCu/CNF Oxygen Reduction Catalyst Membrane by Electrospinning

Xiaoting Deng,Min Lao,Zhenqin Li,Shaofeng Yin,Feng Liu,Zhiyong Xie,Yili Liang

A flexible carbon nanofiber film with high conductivity was prepared by electrospinning, and then Cu was uniformly deposited on the fiber film by pulse electrodeposition to prepare Cu nanocrystal/carbon nanofiber film. Cu@PtCu/carbon nanofiber (Cu@PtCu/CNF) catalytic films were synthesized by in-situ substitution reduction. The Cu@PtCu/CNF catalytic film solves the problem of uneven activity of the catalytic layer and can be directly used as the catalytic layer. The morphology and structure were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Electrochemical test results show that the Cu@PtCu/CNF catalytic films obtained at the chloroplatinic acid concentration of 0.5 mg·mL–1 (N2) exhibited 2.5 times specific activity when compared with commercial Pt/C catalysts. After 5000 cycles of stability test, the electrochemical surface areas (ECSAs) were still maintained at 80%, and the half-wave potential decreased by 11 mV, which was better than those of commercial Pt/C catalysts.

Sub-15 nm Pd@PtCu concave octahedron with enriched atomic steps as enhanced oxygen reduction electrocatalyst

Zhi Liang Zhao,Qi Wang,Hongfang Du,Taotao Liang,Hong Ming An,Chang Ming Li

Catalyst nanoparticles with enriched atomic steps structure can offer higher catalytic performance. Nevertheless, the reported sizes of PtCu nanoparticles with enriched atomic steps surface are usually larger than 30 nm or even hundreds of nanometres, which need great reduction for further improved catalytic performance. In this work, Pd nanocubes are used as seeds for mediating growth of 13.7 nm Pd@PtCu concave octahedrons with enriched atomic steps surface. Towards oxygen reduction reaction , the specific activity at 0.9 V for the Pd@PtCu concave octahedral catalyst is 3.36 mA cm-2 Pt, which is 2.6 and 11.4 times higher than that of Pd@PtCu octahedron (1.31 mA cm-2 Pt) and commercial Pt/C (0.29 mA cm-2 Pt) catalyst, respectively. The dramatic performance enhancement can be ascribed to the reduced particle sizes for increased electrochemically active surface area (ECSA), a high density of atomic steps and a large number of concave sites as highly active catalytic reaction centers to break O–O bonds. This work demonstrates a new approach to synthesize a superior electroactive catalyst, holding a great promise for practical applications in high-performance and low-temperature fuel cells.

Structure evolution of PtCu nanoframes from disordered to ordered for the oxygen reduction reaction

Mingxing Gong,Dongdong Xiao,Zhiping Deng,Rui Zhang,Weiwei Xia,Tonghui Zhao,Xupo Liu,Tao Shen,Yezhou Hu,Yun Lu,Xu Zhao,Huolin Xin,Deli Wang

Crystal structure engineering of platinum (Pt) based disordered alloys to chemically ordered intermetallics has triggered increasing attention in promoting their performance towards the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, a systematic experiment of comparing the catalytic performance in different crystal structures is rarely reported. Herein, the widely-watched PtCu nanoframes (atomically disordered) are firstly synthesised to investigate their structure-properties relationship. Subsequently, rhombohedral PtCu intermetallics ( L 1 1 structured, atomically ordered) which were rarely reported before are fabricated by appropriate high temperature treatment. The L 1 1 -PtCu delivers significantly enhanced durability (only 15 % attenuation after 30,000 cycles) while decreased initial activity (0.44 A mg Pt −1 ) for ORR compared with their disordered counterpart. In virtue of in-situ STEM experiment assisted by the state-of-the-art 3D tomography, we reveal that the ordering process improves the resistance against Cu leaching meanwhile results in the collapse and aggregation of the NFs. This work provides a visual understanding of Pt based electrocatalyst in different crystal structures for proton exchange membrane fuel cells in the future.
