In this paper, sulfonated nitrogen sulfur co-doped graphene (S-NS-GR) nanocomposite , i.e., nitrogen sulfur co-doped graphene functionalized with SO 3 H group as a novel catalyst support material was prepared. Pt Pd nanoparticles (Pt Pd NPs) were deposited on the surface of S-NS-GR by a facile electrochemical approach. The morphology and structure of Pd-PtNPs/S-NS-GR were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), respectively. In addition, the electrocatalytic performance of catalyst for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) was systematically studied by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry in alkaline media . Compared with Pt Pd NPs supported on nitrogen sulfur co-doped graphene (Pt-PdNPs/NS-GR), the excellent performance of Pd-PtNPs/S-NS-GR is mainly ascribed to the embedding of abundant functional groups ( SO 3 H) into the NS-GR layers, which not only facilitate the homogeneous distribution of metal NPs , but also strengthen the interaction between metals and support material, thus improve the stability of catalyst in MOR.

Up to now, green synthesis of “naked” nanoobjects with clean surfaces is still a great challenge since structure-directing agents such as surfactants are usually used to induce the anisotropic particle growth for interesting nanostructures in solution. Here, a green synthesis approach for preparing “naked” Pt nanoparticles (NPs) in acetic acid solution was reported. Interestingly, Pt NPs with different morphologies (well-defined polyhedrons, irregular polyhedron-constructed chain networks and nanoflower-constructed chain networks) could be successfully synthesized at different concentrations of acetic acid without adding additional structure-directing agents and reducing agents. The acetic acid itself works both as structure-directing agent and reducing agent for the formation of these interesting Pt NPs. Specifically; the synthesized NPs are “naked” with clean surfaces since the acetic acid is a weakly-capping agent which can be easily removed after the washing process. The versatility of this method is further demonstrated by preparation of “naked” PtPd alloy NPs. In particular, the as-prepared “naked” Pt_5.20 and Pt3Pd1_5.20 NPs are demonstrated to be excellent catalysts with much higher electroactivity and better durability than the commercial Pt black catalyst (Hispec™ 1000) for the methanol oxidation reaction. The method reported in this work may pave the way for simple, low-cost, green and eco-friendly synthesis of “naked” metal catalysts for advanced electrocatalytic applications.

Abstract The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells suffers from an inherent thermodynamic bottleneck. Current research is mostly confined to independent optimization of either its thermodynamic or kinetic properties, failing to break through the catalytic performance limit imposed by classical models. Herein, PtPd alloy nanosheets dominated by the (111) facets, with a thickness of about 1–2 nm, were synthesized under high-pressure conditions using CO as the direct reduction gas. First-principles calculations demonstrate that PtPd alloy nanosheets thermodynamically optimize ORR by lowering the surface O adsorption energy, thereby positively shifting the onset potential to 1.02 V vs RHE. Furthermore, the distinct d-orbital electronic structure of Pd interacting with Pt enables enhanced electron filling into the antibonding orbitals of the OOH intermediate. This electronic modulation reduces the apparent activation energy by approximately 20 kJ mol–1, kinetically accelerating the ORR process. This catalyst simultaneously increases the thermodynamic limiting potential and reduces the kinetic activation energy, ultimately leading to a mass activity of up to 1.275 A mg–1 at 0.95 VRHE, achieving 53.3 times the activity of commercial Pt/C.

With the increasing global demand for clean energy, hydrogen energy will play an increasingly crucial role in future human life, serving as a key driver of the low-carbon economy. Alloy semiconductor nanomaterials exhibit substantial benefits in gas sensing applications due to their distinctive characteristics. This paper reports the synthesis of alloy PtPd-modified cubic In 2 O 3 nanomaterials via a hydrothermal method to optimize their hydrogen (H 2 ) sensor performance. Compared to pure In 2 O 3 and previously reported bimetallic-modified semiconductor hydrogen sensors, the cubic PtPd/In 2 O 3 sensor demonstrates impressive H 2 sensing performance. The 4 at% PtPd/In 2 O 3 (Pt:Pd = 1:1) sensor shows a response value (S = Ra/Rg) of 11.23 to 100 ppm H 2 at 60 °C, with response and recovery times of 73 s and 135 s, respectively. Additionally, the 4 at% PtPd/In 2 O 3 sensor exhibits excellent H 2 selectivity and good repeatability. The chemical state changes of the samples in an H 2 environment were analyzed using in-situ XPS. The enhanced sensor performance is mainly attributed to the synergistic sensitization effect of the PtPd alloy, which reduces the activation energy of gas reactions and increases the content of chemisorbed oxygen. The PtPd/In 2 O 3 sensor shows great potential for low-temperature, low-concentration H 2 detection.

As a commonly used disinfectant in clinical medicine, glutaraldehyde is highly volatile and possesses a ppb-level environmental permissible threshold. Developing a sensitive and portable gas sensing platform for low-concentration glutaraldehyde detection is crucial. Herein, we present an efficient chemiresistive sensor that enables the low-concentration and rapid detection of glutaraldehyde. The sensor is based on SnO 2 nanofibers (NFs) functionalized with bimetallic PtPd nanocatalysts (NCs). Square-shaped PtPd NCs with a uniform edge length of 8.2 nm are synthesized by a hydrothermal method and then introduced into SnO 2 NFs. The resulting PtPd-SnO 2 -1 sensor yields a rapid, sensitive, and reversible response to glutaraldehyde gas, with a theoretical detection limit of 10.7 ppb. The remarkable gas sensing properties are attributed to the sensitization and synergistic effect of PtPd NCs, thereby promoting the formation of chemisorbed oxygen species and enhancing the response. Density functional theory (DFT) results show that the catalytic effect of bimetallic PtPd NCs leads to an increase in adsorption energy as well as charge transfer, and Pd-doping-induced shift of the d-band center. As a key component, the sensor is integrated into a wireless glutaraldehyde sensing platform, which integrates a circuit board and a smart terminal, thus achieving convenient and effective glutaraldehyde detection. The finding indicates that the PtPd-SnO 2 sensor is a potential candidate for practical glutaraldehyde detection.

The development of doped noble metal catalysts with nonmetal elements to improve the catalytic performance toward the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is significant for proton exchange membrane fuel cell technology. Here, we report a one-pot for dual-nonmetal-doping strategy for the synthesis of S and P-co-doped mesoporous PtPd nanocages (PtPdSP mNCs) by using pre-synthesized mesoporous PtPd nanocages (PtPd mNCs) as the precursor and triphenylphosphine sulphide as both S and P sources. Benefitting from the combined advantages of metal–nonmetal incorporation, hollow cavity and surface porosity, the resultant quaternary PtPdSP mNCs exhibit outstanding ORR activity and long-term stability. This research work provides a good strategy for the doping of two or more selected nonmetallic elements into metallic nanocrystals with a controllable structure and composition.

A ratiometric electrochemical aptasensor was developed for ultrasensitive PFOA detection. • Fc-PtPd@HOF-101 served as the sensing platform and Au@MXene as the signal label. • The sensor achieves an ultralow detection limit of 6.04 fg/mL with excellent linearity from 10 fg/mL to 10 ng/mL. • Fc and MB signals provided self-calibration, improving accuracy and reproducibility. • Validated in real samples: tap, landscape, and PTFE-cooked water from Zhengzhou. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), as the most representative perfluorinated compound, is a persistent organic pollutant with exceptional chemical stability and resistance to natural degradation. Traditional detection methods, which rely on sophisticated instrumentation, exhibit limited sensitivity and often struggle to meet the requirements for trace-level analysis. In this study, a ratiometric electrochemical aptasensor was developed based on a ferrocene and hydrogen-bonded organic framework co-modified gold electrode (Fc-PtPd@HOF-101) combined with an Au@MXene signal tag, achieving ultrasensitive PFOA detection in water. The sensor utilizes an Fc internal reference and MB response indicator, with DPV detection. Au@MXene/cDNA/MB probe was constructed. In the presence of target PFOA, the sensor forms a stable Apt-PFOA complex, triggering the displacement of complementary DNA and the subsequent release of the signal probe, leading to a decrease in MB signal. The large specific surface area of Au@MXene enables high loading of cDNA and MB, significantly amplifying the signal while Fc remains stable. A ratiometric aptasensor was established using the current ratio I MB /I Fc . Under optimized conditions, the sensor exhibited a linear range of 10.0 fg mL -1 to 10.0 ng mL -1 and a low detection limit of 6.04 fg mL -1 , with outstanding selectivity, reproducibility, and stability. This study provides a novel technical approach for the rapid and sensitive detection of trace PFOA in environmental water samples. The construction of advanced catalysts with well-defined structural properties is crucial for the selective hydrogenation of polyaromatic hydrocarbons in modern fossil fuel upgrading. In this work, a PtPd alloy catalyst supported on Si-modified Al2O3 nanosheet (Pt-Pd/A-Si-12) is synthesized, which exhibits three key structural advantages: a high specific surface area (422 m2 g–1), a large pore volume (0.8 cm3 g–1), and a surface enriched with finely modulated weak acid sites. Systematic characterization reveals that the hierarchical porous structure not only promotes uniform dispersion of active metal species but also facilitates mass transfer of macromolecular reactants, leading to a diffusion rate 1.47 times that of the unmodified Pt-Pd/A-Si-0 catalyst. Moreover, the tailored weak acid sites play a dual role: enhancing the metal–support interaction through electronic effects while concurrently creating a highly selective hydrogenation environment. As a result, the Pt-Pd/A-Si-12 catalyst achieves nearly complete conversion (∼100%) and a selectivity up to 93% under 250 °C and 5 MPa H2, along with significantly improved stability and high sulfur resistance. This study provides fundamental insights into the structure–performance relationship in selective hydrogenation and offers an effective strategy for the design of efficient industrial catalysts.

Glypican-3 (GPC3) is exclusively overexpressed in most Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) tissue but not in normal liver tissue, making it a promising biomarker for the precise detection of HCC. In this paper, a label-free light-addressable potentiometric sensor (LAPS) decorated by platinumpalladium-hemin-reduced graphene oxide nanocomposites (PtPd@H-rGO NCs) was constructed for determination of GPC3. The GPC3 aptamer (GPC3 Apt ) and PtPd@H-rGO NCs were modified on the surface of silicon-based LAPS chip to build sensitive unit of LAPS system. A readout photocurrent elicited from a modulated light source, registers the localized surface potential change. When a bias voltage is provided to the LAPS system, the GPC3-GPC3 Apt complexes formed by the specific reaction between GPC3 and GPC3 Apt at the sensing interface can cause the sensitive membrane surface potential to change, resulting in the photocurrent-voltage (I-V) curves generate a corresponding offset response. Therefore GPC3 concentration can be determined by monitoring the potential shifts (△V). Under optimal conditions, the potential shift is linearly related to the concentration of GPC3 in the range of 0.001–3.00 μg/mL with the limit of detection (LOD) of 0.0001 μg/mL. The LAPS has a good analytical performance with good specificity, reproducibility and stability, and can be used for the detection of GPC3 in actual serum samples, which provides a broad application prospect for the combined application of LAPS and aptamers in biooassay.

Antimony-doped tin oxide (ATO) nanoparticles are synthesized by a simple one-step hydrothermal method. The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity of the PtPd/C catalyst is promoted by the presence of ATO. Moreover, after accelerated durability testing, the PtPd/C-ATO catalyst reserves most of its electrochemically active surface area (ESA) and ORR activity compared to the PtPd/C catalyst. The improved electrochemical stability and activity of PtPd/C-ATO is attributed to the high stability of ATO support and the strong interaction between Pt and ATO.

The synthesis of catalysts with controllable morphology and composition is important to enhance the catalytic performance for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Herein, trimetallic PtPdY mesoporous nanospheres (PtPdY MNs) are produced via a one-step chemical reduction method applying F127 as soft temple under acidic condition. The mesoporous structure provides a large contact area and also stimulates the diffusion and mass transfer of reactants and products. Besides, synergistic effect among Pt, Pd and Y elements effectively alters their electronic structure, enhancing the catalytic activity. Therefore, the PtPdY MNs show excellent ORR permanence to Pt/C under the alkaline solution. This study offers an effective channel for the preparation of mesoporous metals with rare earth metal doping towards promising electrocatalytic applications.

Direct formic acid fuel cell (DFAFC) is an important research project in clean energy field. However, commercialization of DFAFC is still largely limited by the available catalysts with unsatisfied activity, durability and cost for formic acid electrooxidation (FAEO). Using Pt- and Pd-based nanoclusters as electrocatalysts is a particularly promising strategy to solve the above problem, but two attendant problems need to be solved firstly. (I) The controllable synthesis of practicable and stable sub-2 nm clusters remains challenging. (II) The catalyzing mechanism of sub-2 nm metal clusters for FAEO has not yet completely understood. Herein, different from traditional solution synthesis, by designing a novel supporting material containing electron-rich and electron-deficient functional groups, size- and dispersion-controllable synthesis of ∼1 nm PtPd nanoclusters is realized by an electrochemical process. The electrocatalytic properties and reaction mechanism of the PtPd nanoclusters for the FAEO were studied by different electrochemical techniques, in-situ fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The tiny PtPd nanoclusters have much higher catalytic activity and durability than commercial Pt/C, Pd/C and 3.5 nm PtPd nanoparticles. The present study shows that the metal-reactant interaction plays a decisive role in determining the catalytic activity and cluster-support interaction plays a decisive role in enhancing the durability of electrocatalyst. The ratio and arrangement of Pt and Pd atoms on the surface of 1 nm PtPd cluster as well as the overall valence state, d-band center and specific surface area make them exhibit different catalytic performance and reaction mechanism from nanoparticle catalysts. In addition, in situ FTIR and DFT calculations showed that on the surface of PtPd clusters, the generation of CO 2 through trans-COOH intermediate is the most optimal reaction pathway for the FAEO.
