Advanced separation of soluble organic matter in a low-rank coal and evaluation using unsupervised analyses

Yang-Yang Xu,Xing Fan,Wen-Long Mo,Turghun Muhammad,Xiang Bai,Binoy K. Saikia,Xian-Yong Wei,Feng-Yun Ma

Three soluble fractions (SFs) of a low-rank coal were obtained by sequential thermal dissolution (TD) using cyclohexane, toluene and methanol as the solvent. SFs were further separated using preparative high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to obtain subfractions. Both SFs and subfractions were characterized by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Low polar compounds such as alkanes and arenes were enriched by cyclohexane. A large number of arenes and esters were detected in toluene extracts. Strong polar compounds like phenols were concentrated by methanol. After the separation by using preparative HPLC, more phenols, alcohols, esters and ketones were identified in subfractions, and the number of compounds detected by GC/MS increased by around 3 times. In addition, two trace compounds, (2,6-dimethoxybenzoyl chloride and tetrachloro-o-benzoquinone), were identified and one compound, 1,4-benzene-dicarboxylic acid-bis(2-ethylhexyl) ester, was enriched to 89.9% after separation. Two unsupervised analysis methods, hierarchical cluster analysis and principal components analysis, revealed the differences in distributional and compositional features of SFs and subfractions.

Effects of nonionic collectors with oxygen-containing functional groups on flotation performance of low-rank coal

Fen Xu,Shiwei Wang,Xianli Yuan,Rongjie Kong

This study aims to investigate the influence of nonionic collectors (diesel, methyl linoleate, oleic acid, and castor oil acid) on the flotation response of low-rank coal particles using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis, particle-bubble adhesion tests, and froth floatation measurements, in addition to density functional theory, molecular dynamics, and grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations. The results of the XPS analysis and the particle-bubble adhesion index showed that methyl linoleate, oleic acid, and castor oil acid could effectively adsorb onto the surfaces of low-rank coal particles and upgrade their surface hydrophobicity. The greatest content of hydrophobic functional group C C/C H and the flotation yield obtained by adding methyl linoleate during the flotation process were 78.88% and 86.95%, respectively. The electron-absorption induction effect of oxygen-containing groups and large π bonds of methyl linoleate considerably improved the wetting process on the surface of low-rank coal particles compared with that of dodecane, which contains a saturated bonding structure. The highest average adsorption capacity was obtained when methyl linoleate was applied to the surface of low-rank coal particles. The results suggest that ester surfactants such as methyl linoleate can substantially enhance the flotation response of low-rank coal.

New approach to evaluate the wettability of low-rank coal powders based on multiple light scattering

Han Guo,Min Liu,Haichang Yang,Erfa Ding,Shiqi Dai,Yijun Cao,Xiahui Gui,Mengdi Xu,Xing Yaowen

Wettability is an important interfacial property that affects the separation of micro-fine particles. This paper carried out a new approach to evaluate the wettability of low-rank coal (LRC) powder based on multiple light scattering. Four collectors are used to modify the coal powder to obtain different wettabilities. The stability analyzer is used to investigate the wettability and wetting process of coal sample, which is observed by transmitted light. The stability of coal samples dispersed in a sample cell completely wetted by water is analyzed by Turbiscan Stability Index (TSI). The TSI value shows that stronger wettability of coal sample can make the system less stable. Moreover, the change law of the transmitted light shows that the coal sample with high wettability is quickly wetted by water, resulting in a shorter time for the transmitted light intensity (T) to decrease to 0% due to the volume concentration of the particles entering the water phase increase rapidly. Therefore, the wettability is characterized by the variation time of T. The shorter time represents the stronger wettability. While ΔT/t is used as an evaluation of the wetting rate, the larger absolute value shows a faster wettability rate. This provides a basis for rapid and accurate evaluation of the wettability of LRC samples.

Enhancing low-rank coal flotation using a mixture of dodecane and n-valeric acid as a collector

Zechen Liu,Yinfei Liao,Yongtian Wang,Maoyan An,Qingteng Lai

Low-rank coals are difficult to float using common hydrocarbon oily collectors, such as dodecane and diesel. In this investigation, a mixture of dodecane and n-valeric acid was used as a collector to enhance low-rank coal flotation. The changes in the induction time and surface functional groups of low-rank coal were measured before and after different collector’s adsorption to indicate its absorption mechanism. The surface free energy was calculated to identify the interaction mechanism quantitatively between coal and collectors. The results showed that the flotation performance using the mixture as a collector was much better than that using dodecane or n-valeric acid solely. The induction time of coal conditioned with the mixed collector was the shortest, which meant the better hydrophobicity and floatability. When used the mixture as collector, the polar group of the n-valeric acid interacting with the oxygenated functional group on the coal surface by hydrogen bond while dodecane primarily covers the hydrophobic sites on the coal surface. Additionally, the mixed collector can minimize the surface free energy of raw coal, the dodecane primarily reduces the nonpolar part of the coal surface free energy while the n-valeric acid reduces the polar part of the coal surface free energy.

Insights into a Low-Rank Naomaohu Coal Structural Information by Multistage Fractions Coupled with LIAD-VUVPI-TOFMS

Jingxiong Yu,Fanggang Liu,Zefeng Deng,Zaifa Shi,Jiangle Zhang,Qiaolin Wang,Jing Yang,Haoquan Hu,Zhengbo Qin,Zichao Tang

In-depth insights into the chemical composition and structural information of coal are an effective way to improve the efficiency of coal utilization. Laser-induced acoustic desorption coupling with vacuum ultraviolet photoionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LIAD-VUVPI-TOFMS) was applied to structural characterization of cyclohexane extracts of low-rank Naomaohu coal. The characterization of four types (12 model compounds) of mixed coal model compounds (three compounds per category)─saturated hydrocarbons, substitute aromatic hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, and aromatic heteroatom rings─demonstrated that the approach can provide intact molecular weight information. The cyclohexanone extract (ECYC) was obtained by microwave-assisted extraction and separated into four group components (F1–4) by column chromatography to achieve component classification and simplify analysis. The molecular weight and structure were obtained by LIAD-VUVPI-TOFMS and synchronous fluorescence spectroscopy, combined with microwave-assisted extraction and column chromatography to separate product characteristics. Chemical components of a total of 248 species were observed, of which 46 are derived from aliphatic hydrocarbons embedded in the coal skeleton structure, 132 species are derived from aromatic hydrocarbons embedded in the coal skeleton structure, 61 are derived from possible coal skeleton units (compounds have obvious stacking and bonding effects), and 9 could not be determined (aromatic hydrocarbons or a possible coal skeleton structure unit).

Effect of oil film thickness on the interaction behavior between low-rank coal particle and oily bubble

Yali Wang,Man Wang,Guangshan Liu,Xiangguo Liao,Haichang Yang

At present, there is a lack of systematic research on the mechanism by which oil film thickness affects the interactions between low-rank coal particles and bubbles. This study systematically examines the effect of oil film thickness on the interaction mechanisms between low-rank coal particles and oily bubbles through wrap angle measurements, oscillatory detachment tests, and interaction force analysis. The results show that oil film thickness significantly influences both attachment and detachment dynamics. As the thickness increased from 30 μm to 160 μm, the theoretical maximum wrap angle rose from 128.8° to 205.2°, while the kinetic rate constant decreased from 0.0221 s−1 to 0.0149 s−1, indicating that thicker oil films hinder initial attachment by increasing resistance. Oscillatory detachment tests revealed that increasing the oil film thickness from 30 μm to 60 μm raised the critical detachment frequency to 20 hz. However, further increasing the thickness to 160 μm reduced it to 17.5 hz, suggesting reduced stability of the particle-bubble aggregates. Interaction force measurements showed that as the oil film thickened, electrostatic repulsion decreased from 66.9 μN to 21.5 μN, and once the thickness exceeded 60 μm, the maximum adhesion force dropped sharply. This study is the first to reveal a dual-stage regulatory mechanism through which oil film thickness influences particle-bubble interactions, providing new theoretical insights for optimizing the flotation performance of low-rank coal.

Experimental and computational studies of polycarboxylate dispersant effect on the properties of low-rank coal water slurries

Huijun Wu,Dongmei Lv,Yunhao Nie,Tingao Jiang,Jing Li,Shuwen Gong,Hui Yan

The disadvantages of low-rank coal in the preparation of coal water slurry (CWS) are well known, but the synthesis of suitable dispersants is a promising solution. Polycarboxylate dispersant (PC) is expected to be an efficient CWS dispersant due to its flexible and controllable structure. In this study, a series of binary PC dispersants were synthesized by controlling the ratio of acrylic acid (AA) to sodium styrene sulfonate (SSS), initiator fraction, and temperature, and the optimal PC was selected based on the apparent viscosity of 72 # CWS at 100 s −1 . The properties of 72 # CWS were studied: This CWS exhibited shear-thinning behavior, >14 static stability, and >55 wt% maximum solid loading, indicating the satisfactory performance of the optimal PC. The experimental results (including adsorption tests and zeta potential measurement) and molecular dynamics simulation showed that PC was effectively adsorbed on the surface of the coal particles by a horizontal multipoint adsorption mode, mainly through the interaction between the hydrophobic groups of the PC molecule and the hydrophobic areas of the coal particles. The hydrophilicity of the coal particles was therefore improved and the stability of their hydration layer was also enhanced, which accounted for the good static stability of 72 # CWS. The amount of PC adsorption and the improved absolute zeta potential were associated with the decent properties of 72 # CWS. This study is significant for promoting the molecular design of CWS dispersants based on their adsorption behavior.

Alkanes-esters mixed collector enhanced low rank coal flotation: Interfacial interaction between oil drop and coal particle

Yinfei Liao,Zhe Yang,Maoyan An,Longfei Ma,Aosheng Yang,Yijun Cao,Luojian Chen,Hourui Ren

The interaction between oil collector drop and coal particle is important for low-rank coal (LRC) flotation. This paper investigated such interactions using dodecane (D), ethyl esters (E) and dodecane-esters mixed collector (MC). Measurements of oil drop-coal induction time and detachment force were conducted at a mesoscopic scale. The micro adsorption mechanism of oil collectors was revealed by wetting heats and FTIR measurements. Flotation results showed MC, especially dodecane-ethyl laurate, obtained high yield and low ash clean coal. There was a shorter induction time and higher adhesion strength between LRC particle and MC drop. The wetting heat of MC was greater than the sum of wetting heat of the two single collectors. FTIR analysis indicated that D validly adsorbed to the methyl or aromatic groups, and E bonded with the oxygen-containing groups. The macro flotation results was well interpreted by the interfacial interaction of collector-coal at the mesoscopic and micro scales.

Improving the Coke Property through Adding HPC Extracted from the Mixture of Low-Rank Coal and Biomass

Jun Zhao,Haibin Zuo,Guangwei Wang,Jingsong Wang,Qingguo Xue

To effectively utilize low-rank coal and biomass in the coking process, through the dissolution method, hypercoal (HPC) was produced, and its performance as an additional component in the coking process was also investigated. The cold strength of coke was tested using an I-type tumble tester and a universal testing machine; the carbon structure of the HPCs was examined via thermogravimetry (TG), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR) analyses. The results revealed that the thermoplastic properties of HPCs and the coke cold strength increased compared to raw coal. There is a positive linear relationship between the cold strength of coke and the order degree of the HPCs. As the biomass amount increased, the order degree of the HPCs greatly decreased, resulting in a decrease in the coke cold strength. When the amount of biomass was 20%, the caking index (G), drum strength, and compressive strength achieved maximum values of 95.21%, 83%, and 7.13 MPa, respectively. In addition, a caking mechanism of the HPCs is proposed.

A novel co-treatment scheme for waste motor oil and low rank coal slime: Waste dispose waste

Zhe Yang,Yinfei Liao,Hourui Ren,Xiaodong Hao,Xingwei Song,Zechen Liu

Waste motor oil (WMO) is a hazardous oil pollutant in the automobile industry and low-rank coal slime (LRCS) is a solid waste produced during coal preparation. This paper introduces a comprehensive utilization scheme for these two waste resources through froth flotation . Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) measurement showed that WMO contains hydrocarbons and their oxides (alkane, aromatic derives, ester or carboxylic acid). When acting as a collector for the flotation of LRCS, WMO resulted in a cleaned coal yield of 77.29% and an ash content of 8.97% at the dosage of 5 kg/t, which was a significant improvement over the traditional collector, diesel oil. A novel co-treatment scheme for WMO and LRCS was proposed and discussed. The co-treatment scheme can bring high quality products for the coal preparation plant and give an alternative of disposing the WMO. The traditional WMO disposal methods like WMO regeneration may produce secondary pollution while the co-treatment scheme has little and controllable environmental impact. What’s more, the scheme has better economic benefit than LRCS flotation using diesel oil or the WMO traditional disposal method.

scResponse: A Rank-Based Method for Identifying Cell States That Contribute to Immunotherapy Response by Single-Cell Data

Qi Dong,Haijun Huang,Yuxiu Wang,Bo Jiang,Yuzheng Chen,Huanhuan Xu,Jing Ren,Shengnan Guo,Tianhao Li,Mingjie Zhang,Tianyu Zhai,Wenbo Yang,Kaidong Liu,Cheng Lyu,Jingxuan Kang,Mingshuo Zhang,Yupeng Lu,Binghui Si,Shujun Cao,Dandan Xu,Zong Chen,Dapeng Hao

Immunotherapy has shown great promise in cancer treatment, yet many patients fail to achieve long-term efficacy. Single-cell sequencing is a powerful technique for understanding how cellular diversity affects treatment outcomes; however, there remains a lack of robust methods for evaluating immunotherapy efficacy at single-cell resolution. In this study, we present scResponse, an efficient algorithm that quantifies single-cell responses to immunotherapy. scResponse captures subtle influences of diverse cellular subtypes and states on immunotherapy efficacy, including the effects of vascular normalization states of vascular cells, polarization of macrophages, terminal exhaustion of CD8 + T cells, and the opposing impacts from distinct fibroblast subtypes. By linking therapeutic response to single‑cell states, scResponse enables to delineate how distinct biological processes shape cellular states to drive divergent therapeutic outcomes. Integrated analysis across cancers identified key metabolic pathways associated with responsive states of tumor cells, including glyoxylate and dicarboxylate metabolism as immunotherapy-sensitizing and retinol metabolism as suppressing it. As a proof-of-concept, the opposing roles of glyoxylate and retinol metabolism was validated using tumor‑CD8 + T cell co-culture assays and in vivo mouse models. Thus, scResponse is an effective tool for mapping immunotherapy efficacy to single-cell states, enabling mechanistic insights and target discovery for developing novel immunotherapy sensitization strategies.

Investigation of hydrogasification of low-rank coals to produce methane and light aromatics in a fixed-bed reactor

Jie Zhang,Xingjun Wang,Fuchen Wang,Jie Wang

The hydrogasification of three low rank coals (YX lignite, XD lignite and ZD subbituminous coal) was carried out in a fixed-bed reactor to investigate the effects of hydrogen pressure on the formations of gaseous, liquid and char products. The reactor was typically heated at a rate of 15   °C/min up to 700   °C with a holding time of 60   min under various hydrogen pressures up to 5   MPa. The yields of BTX (i.e., benzene, toluene, and xylene) and naphthalene increased with increasing hydrogen pressure up to 5   MPa for all three coals, but more significant for XD and ZD coals. The compositional analysis of char revealed that the chars produced by the hydrogasification had higher molar ratios of H/C and lower molar ratios of N/C than those produced by the pyrolysis in N 2 atmosphere, whereas the former chars had higher or lower molar ratios of S/C than the latter chars from case to case depending principally on coals. The apparent reaction rate constants of the chars hydrogasification in the isothermal stage as a function of hydrogen pressure were found to follow a power equation of the power exponents varying with coals.
