We successfully prepared silver dendritic nanostructures with a well-defined and precisely tailored trunk and branches, as well as decorated nanoparticles, by a simple and controllable two-electrode electrochemical deposition system using different AgNO3 concentrations and deposition potentials. The prepared nanostructures are used as SERS substrates for the detection of crystal violet molecules with a minimum detection limit of 10−11 M. Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation is used to analyze the SERS activity of diverse silver dendritic nanostructures. The SERS and FDTD results revealed that the pine leaf-like structure displays excellent sensitivity and reproducibility compared to all other structures due to a large number of hotspot sites between branch–branch and branch–particle junctions. This article provides a good understanding of electromagnetic field enhancement and shows that various silver dendritic nanostructures could be potential candidates for SERS-based detection.

The high sensitivity and reproducibility are significant for the routine Surface-enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) detection. Here, the pyramid-shape silver microstructures has been successfully synthesized using a facile electrochemical deposition method and the reaction with a two-indium tin oxides (ITO) electrode system is carried out by potentiostatic method, where only silver nitrate (AgNO 3 ) and poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanospheres are introduced to control the reaction process. Meanwhile, PMMA nanospheres as morphology controlled reagents are used to lead Ag units to grow in the form of pyramid-shape. The prepared pyramid-shape silver microstructures possesses high SERS activity with an average enhancement factor ( EF ) of 9.1 × 10 5 , which is superior or close to some individual Ag or Au microstructures and Ag composite materials. In addition, an excellent reproducibility is achieved resulting from a relative standard deviation of 7.9%, 8.5%, 7.3%, and 8.7% measured by four Raman shifts of R6G at 612, 772, 1363, and 1650 cm −1 , respectively, which is much lower than those of the commonly used SERS substrates. Importantly, the as-prepared pyramid-shape silver microstructures have been evolved as a sensitive SERS substrate for the detection of trace amounts of rhodamine 6G (R6G) and 3-mercaptopropionic acid (3MPA) down to nanomolar and millimolar concentration with excellent recyclability. Therefore, this work offers a simple way to prepare pyramid-shape silver microstructures as an effective SERS substrate and make the SERS more practicable.

Magnetic materials have been widely used for constructing substrate in surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensing due to the magnetic responsibility. Here, we reported a facile and effective approach to construct multi-functional SERS substrate based on assembling Ag nanoparticles (NPs) on porous Fe microspheres. The porous Fe microspheres were prepared through hydrogen reduction of Fe 2 O 3 NPs with porous structure, in which the size and morphology of Fe could be well controlled. The surface of Fe was grafted with amino group, and then decorated with Ag NPs. The surface area and pore size of Fe microsphere were characterized by nitrogen adsorption and desorption. The Fe@Ag nanocomposite illustrated a good SERS activity. Furthermore, this substrate could be used for pesticide monitoring by portable Raman spectrometer. Especially, the porous Fe microsphere could adsorb analyte from target sample and the Fe@Ag could be concentrated by magnetic force to amplify the SERS signal for thiram detection.

In this work, based on the strawberry-like SiO 2 /Ag nanocomposites (SANC) immersed filter paper, a newly surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate was constructed for the detection of acrylamide (AAm) in food products. To construct filter paper-based SANC (F-SANC) SERS substrates, SiO 2 nanoparticles (SNP) were firstly synthesized and acted as carriers. After that, the in-situ preparation of silver nanoparticles (Ag NP) on SNP surface was carried out to form the strawberry-like three-dimensional (3D) structure of SANC. Finally, SANC were entangled into the filter paper to produce nanoarchitecture, thus providing enhanced plasmon resonance between SANC with strong SERS signal. Under the optimized conditions, the method exhibited good performance toward AAm with a vast linear response from 0.1 nM to 50 μM (R = 0.9935), limit of detection (LOD) of 0.02 nM (S/N = 3), and the recoveries of 80.5%~105.6% for practical samples. This strategy showed good robustness in the rapid and sensitive detection of AAm, which could be a promising strategy in food analysis and verification.

The surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has attracted much attention due to the powerful capability of quantificational analysis. Nowadays, most of the enhancement effect by SERS substrate is provided by the 'hot spots' occupying relatively small space. When the amount of analyte is too low, it is difficult to ensure that all the probe molecules can be placed into the 'hot spots', which is a headache in SERS quatification. In order to solve this problem, we have developed a structure of CuO nanowires/Ag nanoparticles with wettability capacity difference, which can aggregate molecules in water and oil simultaneously under two different mechanisms. The limit of detection and enhancement factor of this structure are estimated as 10−15 M and 1.55 × 1011 respectively (for rhodamine 6G, R6G). In a proof-in-principle experiment of sewage detection, it successfully achieved the aggregation and additional enhancement of both the R6G molecules in aqueous solution and thiuram molecules in toluene, realizing efficient and accurate Raman detection.

A highly sensitive multilayer interlaced silver (Ag) nanosheet (MISN) film was prepared on a PPy@PEDOT:PSS film via an electrodeposition method for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) applications. After the PPy@PEDOT:PSS film was pretreated with ascorbic acid solution, many sparse Ag nanoparticles (NPs) could be directly reduced on the surface of the PPy@PEDOT:PSS film in AgNO3 solution. Then, the MISN film was directionally grown along the surface of sparse Ag NPs by using an electrochemical galvanostatic method to form a Ag/PPy@PEDOT:PSS film for a SERS substrate. The results indicated that with the increase in electrodeposition time, the density of Ag nanosheets was also increased for boosting the SERS effect. Accordingly, owing to the directional growth of Ag NPs, the increase in the length–width ratio of single Ag nanosheets would further promote the SERS signal of the substrate. Moreover, the maximum enhancement factor of the SERS substrate could reach to 12,478, and the minimum limit of detection of melamine solution was down to 5.42 ng/mL. The SERS sensitivity of the Ag nanosheet film reached 100.65. This method of preparing the SERS substrate provides a novel and robust strategy for the low-cost and high-sensitivity detection in biomedicine, drugs, and food.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy technology has broad application prospects in food safety, environmental monitoring, surface science and material analysis because of the characteristics of ultra-high sensitivity and non-destructive testing. However, there are still some challenges in the preparation of SERS substrates. As SERS substrates, the common colloidal noble metal nanoparticles usually show low storage stability and poor repeatability of analytical results. In order to overcome these limitations, a coaxial microfluidic spinning device was designed to prepare flexible SERS substrates in this paper. Based on the microfluidic spinning and subsequent in-situ reduction reaction of AgNO3, novel gel fibers uniformly loaded with AgNPs were successfully prepared. The effects of the concentration of AgNO3 solution and UV irradiation duration on the formation of AgNPs were investigated. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that the average particle size was about 2.7 nm. The gel fibers loaded with AgNPs were used as SERS substrates to detect 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA), which showed obvious Raman enhancement effect and good repeatability. The relative standard deviation of 10 test results was 4.75%, and the detection line range was 10-14-10-5 mol·L-1.

Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has emerged as a promising tool for the rapid and ultrasensitive recognition of trace amounts of environmental pollutants. Hierarchical SERS substrates usually show superior performance to single-component substrates but require complicated preparation protocols. Herein, a facile, robust and low-cost route for the fabrication of hierarchical SERS substrates has been reported, in which no complicated laborious protocols or sophisticated equipment is needed. In the hierarchical SERS substrate, Au nanorods were distributed onto the network of Ag nanowires through evaporation induced self-assembly. The density of the Au nanorods and Ag nanowires could be easily tailored by tuning the number of droplets of gold nanorod solution and the concentration of silver nanowire solution. The nanogaps formed between Au nanorods and Ag nanowires were able to induce a rich enhanced electromagnetic field area via localized surface plasmon resonances and surface plasmon polaritons to achieve amplification of the Raman signal. The as-prepared substrate showed high uniformity and was capable of identifying 10−12 M rhodamine 6G, 10−10 M thiram and 10−10 M crystal violet, with correlation coefficients (R2) all higher than 0.98. This approach can be employed for the detection of trace dyes, pesticides or other environmental pollutants with high sensitivity and uniformity.

Pesticide residues pose serious threats to food safety and human health, highlighting the need for rapid and sensitive detection methods. Traditional techniques are often time-consuming and complex, whereas Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) offers a fast and highly sensitive alternative. In this study, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized via a one-pot hydrothermal method using trisodium citrate (TSC) as a reducing agent and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a capping agent. By optimizing PVP and TSC concentrations, a novel AgNPs@capillary SERS substrate was fabricated through in situ assembly of AgNPs onto the inner walls of glass capillaries. The substrate enabled rapid, on-site detection of pesticide residues, specifically the neonicotinoid acetamiprid (ACE) and benzimidazole fungicide carbendazim (CBZ). SERS measurements showed strong linear correlations for ACE (R² = 0.9713, 0.01–0.5 μg/mL) and CBZ (R² = 0.9566, 0.005–0.5 μg/mL). Importantly, the detection limits reached 2.28 × 10⁻³ μg/mL for ACE and 6.25 × 10⁻³ μg/mL for CBZ, demonstrating excellent sensitivity. This study confirms the effectiveness of the one-pot synthesized AgNPs@capillary SERS platform as a practical tool for trace-level pesticide monitoring in environmental and food safety contexts.

Accurate and sensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates are urgently demanded for the various analytic techniques. The SERS substrates with multimodal and gradient porous structure, utilized for the Rhodamine 6G (R6G) detection, have been designed and successfully fabricated from the thermal diffusion couples of Al and Cu foils via chemical dealloying. The structural inheritance of the initial microstructure of thermal diffusion couple precursors governs the formation of the final layer-by-layer gradient porous Cu with different characteristic pore sizes and morphology. An outmost surface layer of disordered lipstick-like porous structure on the SERS substrates enhances SERS effects as has been expected. The SERS activity of R6G Raman probes on gradient porous Cu is evaluated as a SERS enhancement factor of 6.63 × 10 12 and limit of detection of 2.10 × 10 −17 mol/L, higher than other porous SERS substrates. Meanwhile, the present SERS substrates are flexible and exhibit good bending properties due to the unreacted Cu layer as a supporting skeleton and other gradient porous Cu layers. The superior SERS performances are considered to result from the synergetic effects of the surface scattering of porous Cu rods and enhancements of the high electromagnetic fields between the small gaps between the nanopores.

Simple and traditional hydrothermal fabrication of a novel balsam pear-shaped CuO with high SERS enhancement is presented. XRD (X-ray diffraction), SEM (scanning electronic microscopy), TEM (transmission electron microscope), HRTEM (high-resolution transmission electron microscope), UV-Vis, and Raman are adopted to ensure that this balsam pear-shaped CuO with dense nanoparticle protuberance is successfully prepared. The LOD of this CuO SERS substrate is 4.79 μg L −1 with R6G as molecular probe. By using DFT (density functional theory) calculation and FDTD (finite difference time domainmethod) simulation, both EM (electromagnetic enhancement) and CM (chemical enhancement) mechanisms are investigated, and the results show that these two-enhancement mechanisms can coexist in this balsam pear-shaped CuO. Finally, the prepared substrate has been applied for the determination of trace levels of paraquat in solution , and results show that its LOD for paraquat is 275 μg L −1 (optimum Raman band: 1646 cm −1 Raman shift), which is better than the government standard in China. A dexterous and facile way for fabrication of CuO SERS-active substrates with low cost and high performance, quite promising in detection of chemically hazardous substances and pesticide residue is provided.

Silver nanowires (i.e., AgNWs) can act as effective surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (i.e., SERS) substrates to detect small molecules. However, a lot of prepared AgNWs were often wrapped by polyvinylpyrrolidone (i.e., PVP) thin film to form an insulating layer to produce ill-defined AgNWs-PVP-AgNWs interface, limiting the plasmonic coupling among the stacked AgNWs. Herein, we reported a facile method in removal of PVP ligands from AgNWs for high performance and reusable SERS substrate. Sodium borohydride (NaBH 4 ) was used to completely remove the PVP ligands from the surface of AgNWs and produce a clean AgNWs-AgNWs interface that effectively enhances the localized surface plasmon resonance (i.e., LSPR) was produced, greatly improving the SERS activity of the AgNWs thin film. The SERS detection of rhodamine 6G (i.e., R6G) used with PVP AgNWs and without PVP AgNWs is 1.0 × 10 -9 and 1.0 × 10 -15 M, and the average enhancement factor ( EF ) is about 0.86 × 10 4 and 9.35 × 10 4 , respectively. Moreover, the recyclable behavior of the AgNWs with several analyte molecules is much more interesting than that of the PVP@AgNWs. The SERS detection of AgNWs for R6G, the 3-mercaptopropionic acid (i.e., 3-MPA) and melamine with good recyclability in nanomolar and millimolar concentration can be easily detected.
