Antimony, a toxic metalloid posing ecological and human health risks, remains difficult to remove efficiently from aquatic environments, particularly under acidic conditions. In this study, fly ash-based geopolymers were employed as the matrix, and a series of iron sludge-modified composite adsorbents were prepared by incorporating different proportions of iron sludge. Their adsorption performance toward Sb(V) and applicability in acidic wastewater were systematically evaluated. With increasing iron sludge content, the Sb(V) removal efficiency improved from 67% to 94%. Among the composites, the material with a fly ash-to-iron sludge mass ratio of 4:1 exhibited the best overall performance in terms of adsorption capacity, kinetic response, and applicability under acidic conditions. Characterization results revealed that Sb adsorption was governed not only by coordination with surface Fe active sites but also by localized acid-induced corrosion and reconstruction of Si-O-Al bonds within the geopolymer framework, accompanied by the formation of a new Sb-doped sillimanite phase, indicating distinctive structural evolution during adsorption. The adsorption kinetics were well described by the Elovich model, suggesting heterogeneous surface energy distribution, while intraparticle diffusion analysis suggested that iron sludge incorporation facilitated Sb(V) mass transfer and improved access to internal adsorption sites. The isotherm data fitted the Sips model best, and the maximum adsorption capacity of IS-FAGF 4:1 reached 74 mg/g, representing a 23.3% increase compared with the pristine geopolymer. Lower pH favored Sb removal, and iron sludge modification broadened the effective working pH range. The increase in final pH observed after adsorption suggests a pH adjustment effect under acidic conditions, which is likely related to the release of alkaline species from the geopolymer matrix. Although phosphate exerted competitive effects, the composite still maintained relatively stable Sb(V) removal, indicating favorable anti-interference performance under acidic conditions. Regeneration experiments further confirmed the good cyclic stability of the composite. Overall, this study elucidates the synergistic multi-mechanism adsorption behavior of Sb(V) on iron sludge-fly ash geopolymers, providing theoretical support for the design of geopolymer-based composite adsorbents and the treatment of acidic Sb-containing wastewater.

Antimony trisulfide (Sb 2 S 3 ) is industrially important for processes ranging from a semiconductor dopant through batteries to a flame retardant. Approaches for fabricating Sb 2 S 3 nanostructures or thin films are by chemical or physicochemical methods, while there have been no report focused on the biological synthesis of nano Sb 2 S 3 . In the present study, we fabricated nano-broccoli-like Sb 2 S 3 using Sb(V) reducing bacteria. Thirty four marine and terrestrial strains are capable of fabricating Sb 2 S 3 after 1–5 days of incubation in different selective media. The nano-broccoli-like bio-Sb 2 S 3 was light sensitive between 400–550 nm, acting as a photo-catalyst with the bandgap energy of 1.84 eV. Moreover, kinetic and mechanism studies demonstrated that a k value of ∼0.27 h −1 with an R 2 = 0.99. The bio-Sb 2 S 3 supplemented system exhibited approximately 18.4 times higher photocatalytic activity for degrading methyl orange (MO) to SO 4 2- , CO 2 and H 2 O compared with that of control system, which had a k value of ∼0.015 h −1 (R 2 = 0.99) under visible light. Bacterial community shift analyses showed that the addition of S or Fe species to the media significantly changed the bacterial communities driven by antimony stress. From this work it appears Clostridia, Bacilli and Gammaproteobacteria from marine sediment are potentially ideal candidates for fabricating bio-Sb 2 S 3 due to their excellent electron transfer capability. Based on the above results, we propose a potential visible light bacterially catalyzed self-purification of both heavy metal and persistent organic contamination polluted coastal waters.

We developed an approach of magnetic dispersive solid-phase extraction (MSPE) based on magnetic graphene nanocomposite rGO/Fe3O4 for the determination of trace Sb(III) and Sb(V) using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) were used to characterize the sorbent. The adsorption behavior of Sb(III) and Sb(V) on rGO/Fe3O4 was investigated. The results showed that the adsorption capacity of Sb(V) was nearly zero at pH = 9, while Sb(III) could be well adsorbed on rGO/Fe3O4. The magnetic SPE parameters including pH, adsorbent dosage, eluent type, and volume were optimized. The detection limit of Sb(III) under ideal conditions was 6 ng L−1, and the relative standard deviation was 7.6% (c = 1 g L−1, n = 7). The technique was used to identify Sb(III) at trace levels in environmental water samples, and its validity was examined by recovery experiments and the examination of an approved reference material.

The simultaneous separation and determination of inorganic trivalent antimony Sb(III) and pentavalent antimony Sb(V) in plant, soil, and sediment samples was carried out by high performance liquid chromatography – inductively coupled plasma – mass spectrometry (HPLC-ICP-MS). The chromatographic conditions (composition and concentration of competing ion, pH value and flow rate of mobile phase) and the operating parameters for inductively coupled plasma – mass spectrometry were optimized by single factor experiments. The separation of the Sb species was achieved within 6 min using the optimized chromatographic conditions. The detection limits of the method were 0.016 μg/L and 0.021 μg/L for Sb(III) and Sb(V), respectively. The retention times of Sb(V) and Sb(III) were 2.7 min and 4.5 min, respectively. The relative standard deviations for replicate measurements (n = 6) of low (5 μg/L), medium (20 μg/L), and high (40 μg/L) concentrations of Sb(III) and Sb(V) were less than 4%. The results of spiking and recovery experiments for the extracting solutions of soil, sediments, and plants showed that the spiked recoveries of the two species ranged from 92% to 103%. This method has been used to determine the antimony species in extracts of environmental samples.
