In situ ZrC-reinforced SiBCN nanofibers with superior electromagnetic wave absorption performance

Baojie Zhang,Longfei Zhang,Yuqi Hao,Furong Liang,Zhuang Ma,Lihong Gao,Chen Ma

In situ ZrC formation builds conductive pathways in SiBCN nanofibers. • Multiphase interfaces enhance conductive loss and interfacial polarization. • RL min of −52.02 dB and EAB of 13.04 GHz are achieved with optimal matching. SiBCN ceramic nanofibers suffer from limited electrical conductivity and polarization, restricting their electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption. Here, SiBCN/ZrC composite nanofibers were fabricated by electrospinning and in situ carbothermal reduction. Conductive ZrC nanocrystals and graphitic carbon enhanced charge transport, while heterogeneous interfaces among ZrC, β-SiC, graphitic carbon, and amorphous SiBCN promoted interfacial polarization. The optimized SiBCN/ZrC-4 nanofibers balanced dielectric attenuation and impedance matching, achieving a minimum reflection loss of −52.02 dB at 3.5 mm and an effective absorption bandwidth of 6.32 GHz at 2.0 mm. Their total effective absorption bandwidth reached 13.04 GHz over 1.5–5.0 mm, nearly covering the C, X, and Ku bands. Radar cross-section simulations further confirmed stable scattering suppression under normal and oblique incidence. This work demonstrates an effective phase and interface engineering strategy for broadband polymer-derived ceramic EMW absorbers. Preparation of self-healing Cf/SiBCN(O) composite using a novel polyborosilazane

Xishi Wu,Tongzhou Chen,Bijie Wang,Yujie Song,Qing Huang,Zhengren Huang

In this study, novel polyborosilazane-derived SiBCN(O) ceramic was used as self-healing component in self-healing C f /SiBCN(O) composite, which was prepared by polymer infiltration and pyrolysis (PIP) process. Molecular-level structure design of boron-containing ceramic precursors was utilized to achieve uniform dispersion of boron-containing self-healing components in prepared composites. No elemental diffusion was observed at the interface of ceramic matrix and carbon fibers, which resulted in stable SiBCN(O) structure. In addition, boron was uniformly distributed in C f /SiBCN(O) composite ceramic matrix , which was beneficial for self-healing of cracks. Cracks and indentations were able to heal at high temperatures in air. The best crack-healing behavior occurred in air atmosphere at 1000 °C, with nearly complete crack healing. This excellent self-healing behavior was achieved because silicon and boron atoms in SiBCN(O) ceramic reacted with available oxygen at high temperatures to form SiO 2 (l), B 2 O 3 (l), and B 2 O 3 ·xSiO 2 liquid phases, which effectively filled cracks. In general, as-prepared C f /SiBCN(O) composite exhibited excellent self-healing properties and shows great application potential in high-temperature environment applications such as aviation, aerospace, and nuclear power.

Novel SiBCN composite fibers with broadband and strong electromagnetic wave absorption performance

Jie Liu,Yurun Feng,Chunmiao Liu,Yanchun Tong,Haibin Sun,Hui Peng,Shigang Wu,Junbin Lu,Hongyu Gong,Xue Guo,Jiao Li

The SiBCN composite fibers with strong electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption performance were successfully prepared via polymer-derived ceramics (PDCs) and electrospinning methods at relatively lower preparation temperature. The results showed that the in-situ generated free carbon which existed in the matrix in the form of simple substance and was characterized by low crystallinity. The graphite carbon improved the dielectric loss and properties of SiBCN composite fibers. In particular for the SiBCN composite fibers pyrolyzed at 1300 °C, the in-situ generated nano β-SiC crystallization increased the EMW absorption performance significantly. The minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of the SiBCN-3 reached − 54.91 dB at 2.35 mm and the effective absorption band (EAB, RL ≤ −10 dB) reached 4.72 GHz (13.28–18 GHz, 1.75 mm). Hence, the SiBCN fibers prepared at relatively lower temperature give good absorption performance and predict a broader application prospect in the field of EMW absorption materials.

Study on thermal insulation and electromagnetic shielding properties of multifunctional GNS/SiBCN aerogel

Hongkuan Zhang,Hanqing Yao,Wenxia Zhu,Qingsheng Huo,Dong Su,Huiming Ji

Polymer-derived silicon boron carbonitride (SiBCN) aerogels exhibit outstanding application prospects in high-temperature thermal insulation and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding fields. Herein, graphene nanosheet (GNS) modified SiBCN composite aerogels were fabricated via freeze assembly, freeze-drying and high-temperature pyrolysis. Comprehensive characterizations were performed to systematically reveal the microstructure and phase composition of as-prepared GNS/SiBCN aerogels. Numerical simulations were implemented to investigate the effects of ambient temperature and sample thickness on the thermal insulation capacity, while experimental measurements were carried out to evaluate the EMI shielding performance of the composite aerogels. The as-synthesized GNS/SiBCN aerogels feature abundant micron-sized interconnected pores, which substantially suppress multiple heat transfer pathways inside the matrix. The material achieves an ultralow thermal conductivity of 0.03 W/(m·K), making it highly competitive for high-temperature thermal barrier applications, and a thermal insulation efficiency of 69.73% is realized under a thermal shock of 1000°C. Meanwhile, the composite aerogel delivers a total EMI shielding effectiveness as high as 23.37 dB. This work offers a facile fabrication strategy for lightweight materials integrating thermal insulation and EMI shielding functions and provides new insights for the development of multifunctional aerogels toward cutting-edge aerospace and thermal protection fields.

SiBCN/ZrN fiber with multiphase synergy for multifunctional EMI shielding in complex environments

Chao Song,Yunna Chen,Yan Zhuang,Jiahui Liu,Li-Ning Dong,Wenbin Li,Chong He,Huan Xu

As electromagnetic pollution and extreme environments increasingly threaten the operational stability of electronic devices, there is a pressing need for lightweight, flexible materials that integrate electromagnetic shielding, high-temperature tolerance, and intelligent sensing. Herein, solution blow spinning combined with a multiphase-synergy design was employed to in situ form ZrN during high-velocity airflow drawing and high-temperature pyrolysis, enabling the scalable fabrication of ultrafine SiBCN/ZrN composite nanofiber. The introduction of ZrN significantly enhances the electrical conductivity and thermal stability of the fibers, while also promoting increased porosity and specific surface area during pyrolysis. This creates a multi-phase synergistic conductive and polarization network, endowing the composite mats with excellent electromagnetic shielding performance (SE T reaching 35 dB and SSE of 346.5 dB·cm 3 ·g −1 ). Furthermore, the material exhibits good mechanical flexibility and cyclic stability, maintaining fast and reversible responses under high strain conditions, with a high sensitivity of 15.49 kPa −1 and a rapid response time of 83 ms, while retaining stable signals after more than 1000 cycles. Moreover, the intrinsic fire resistance of SiBCN and the chemical stability of ZrN endow the SiBCN/ZrN composite nanofiber with excellent ablation resistance, allowing them to maintain structural integrity even after exposure to a 1200 °C flame. The preparation strategy proposed in this study not only enables the large-scale construction of multifunctional SiBCN/ZrN composite mats but also provides new insights and material foundations for their applications in electromagnetic shielding, fire safety, and intelligent sensing in complex service environments.

Boron-dependent microstructural evolution, thermal stability, and crystallization of mechanical alloying derived SiBCN

Daxin Li,Zhihua Yang,Dechang Jia,Delong Cai,Shengjin Wang,Qingqing Chen,Yu Zhou,Dongli Yu,Yongjun Tian

Amorphous boron-rich SiBCN were prepared by high-energy ball-milling of the mixtures of Si, graphite, h-BN, and inorganic boron, which acted as extra boron source. The solid-state amorphization, thermal stability, and crystallization of the boron-rich SiBCN were studied in detail. It was suggested that mechanical alloying can drive solid-state amorphization but also can be an initiation step for the nucleation of nanocrystals. The amorphous networks of Si-C, C-B, C-C, C-N, B-N, and C-B-N bonds are detected by XPS; however, solid-state NMR further confirms the formation of a new chemical environment around B atoms, BC 3 . The increases in boron content improve the thermal stability of SiBCN ceramics but weaken their oxidation resistance. Nano-SiC crystallizes first while BN(C) forms subsequently. Boron promoting SiC crystallization may result from the reduced hindering effects of B-N-C nanodomains that retard SiC crystallization.

High thermal insulation and high strength SiBCN@SiC double network ceramic composite aerogel

Hongli Liu,Han Pengcheng,Sui Ying,Chen Jianyu,Jia Jianwei

Silicon carbide (SiC) fiber materials prepared by precursor conversion method have attracted extensive attention in recent years due to their excellent high temperature resistance and thermal insulation properties. Herein, a novel SiBCN/SiC dual network ceramic composite aerogel with the three-dimensional (3D) porous SiC fiber network obtained by direct electrospinning as the first network and SiBCN aerogel as the second network was prepared by combining electrospinning with sol-gel technology and supercritical drying technology. The microstructure, phase composition, pore size distribution , compressive resistance, thermal insulation and related mechanisms of the 3D SiC fiber network and composite aerogel at different heat treatment temperatures were investigated in detail. The results show that the constructed double-network structure can make up for the heat transfer problem of a single SiC fiber network and further reduce its thermal conductivity , so that the prepared composite aerogel exhibits a lower thermal conductivity (∼0.0316 W m −1  K −1 ). In addition, the unique double network structure endows the composite aerogel with excellent compressive properties (2.56–2.89 MPa).

Tailoring layered Csf/SiBCN composites with pseudoplastic fracture behavior: Strengthening and toughening mechanisms

Wenhao Dou,Daxin Li,Bingzhu Wang,Delong Cai,Zhihua Yang,Dechang Jia,Ralf Riedel,Shaohua Qin,Yu Zhou

The layering process using phenolic resin coupled with pressureless sintering technique was explored to prepare short carbon fiber-reinforced SiBCN composites (C sf /SiBCN). The effect of phenolic resin content on the microstructure and mechanical properties of C sf /SiBCN was mainly studied. Results suggest that the addition of phenolic resin can appropriately improve density and flexural strength and reduce total pore volume of the composites because phenolic resin can partly consolidate SiBCN powders to promote shaping via low-temperature pressureless sintering. As the phenolic resin content increases, the fracture behavior changes from delamination fracture to monolithic fracture, thereby reducing fracture displacement. The reason for this performance is that the interlayer bonding is enhanced to hinder crack propagation along the layers.

MXene-derived TiC/SiBCN ceramics with excellent electromagnetic absorption and high-temperature resistance

Jinxue Ding,Fengbo Chen,Jianxin Chen,Jin Liang,Jie Kong

Demand for high-performance electromagnetic (EM) wave absorbing materials with high-temperature resistance is always urgent for application in a harsh environment. In this contribution, two-dimensional material, Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene, was introduced into a hyperbranched polyborosilazane. After pyrolyzation, the as-prepared TiC/SiBCN ceramics present excellent EM wave absorption in X-band. The TiC nanograins appearing after annealing provide multilevel reflection and interface polarization. Dipole polarization formed at interface defects, in company with interfacial polarization, also makes a great contribution to enhanced EM wave absorption. The TiC/SiBCN nanocomplex prepared with 5 wt% Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene possesses a minimum reflection coefficient of −45.44 dB at 10.93 GHz and abroad bandwidth 8.4 and 12.4 GHz, almost covering the entire X-band. Tuning the thickness in the range of 2.35-2.54 mm, the effective absorption band can achieve the entire X-band. And the EM wave absorbing performance has been maintained to a large extent at 600°C with the minimum reflection coefficient of −26.12 dB at 12.13 GHz and the effective absorption bandwidth of 2 GHz. Last but not the least, TiC/SiBCN ceramics offer a good thermal stability in argon as well as in air atmosphere, making it possible to serve in high-temperature detrimental environments. This study is expected to provide a new perspective for the design of high-performance absorbing materials that are able to be used in harsh environments, especially in high temperatures.

Microwave absorption ceramics pyrolyzed from poly(dimethylsilylene)diacetylene-modified hyperbranched polyborosilazane

Xi Hu,Geqing Zhang,Haodong He,Chunjia Luo,Min Chao,Guodong Sun,Luke Yan

Polymer-derived ceramics (PDCs) are typically prepared as ceramic-based microwave absorption materials by doping with high-dielectric materials or transition metals, which may lead to the issue of uneven mixing. This study achieves uniform blending at the molecular level by using poly(dimethylsilylene)diacetylenes (PDSDA) to modify hyperbranched polyborosilazane (PBSZ). The alkynyl group and Si−H bonds crosslink to form a ceramic precursor, which is then pyrolyzed to prepare SiBCN ceramics with excellent microwave absorption performance and high temperature stability. The introduction of PDSDA significantly improved the ceramic yield, resulting in the in situ formation of more ordered carbon, SiC nanocrystals, and ceramic nanowires within the SiBCN ceramics. These nanophases are uniformly dispersed throughout the ceramic matrix, enhancing the ceramic's dielectric loss and microwave absorption properties. After pyrolyzed at 1400°C, the ceramic derived from the precursor with a PBSZ:PDSDA mass ratio of 10:1 exhibits excellent electromagnetic wave absorption properties, with a minimum reflection loss of −50.11 dB and a maximum effective absorption bandwidth of 3.11 GHz. Moreover, ceramics maintain excellent stability at 1500°C in both argon and air environments. This study fully exploits the designability of precursor molecules, providing a new approach for the preparation of microwave absorption materials from PDCs route.

A competitive reaction strategy toward dielectric phases for enhancing electromagnetic wave absorption of polymer-derived ceramics

Shuhao Hu,Pingan Chen,Xiangcheng Li,Yingli Zhu,Boquan Zhu

SiBCN ceramics have a wide range of applications in the field of high temperature electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption owing to their excellent EMW attenuation and oxidation resistance. However, excessive SiC and insufficient Si3N4 in the SiBCN ceramics deteriorate the impedance matching characteristics, and weaken the absorption ability for EMW. In this paper, the amount of SiC and Si3N4 is balanced by a competitive reaction strategy, in which HfZr atoms are introduced to modulate the dielectric phases in the SiBCN ceramics. The formation of a HfZrCN compound produces a cage-like structure around Si3N4, inhibiting the reaction of Si3N4 with carbon to form SiC. The appropriate amounts of SiC and Si3N4, and the abundant interfaces and defects jointly enhance the EMW absorption capability by simultaneously improving the impedance matching and attenuation capability. Thus, an effective absorption band of 4.96 GHz (11.20–16.16 GHz) is reached with a thickness of 1.7 mm for the HfZr-SiBCN ceramics. This work provides a new strategy for simultaneously improving the impedance matching and EMW attenuation capability of polymer-derived ceramics by introducing difficult-to-migrate atoms to regulate the content of the dielectric phase.

A sandwiched SiBCN@CF/CNTs film with electrically conductive network for electromagnetic interference shielding

Xiaohui Xia,Wenxia Zhu,Dong Su,Xiao Yan

High-performance electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials are required for advanced electronic devices and communication systems. Here, a nanocarbon-reinforced-silicon boron carbonitride film (denoted as SiBCN@CF/CNTs) with sandwiched structure was prepared via polyborosilazane (PBSZ) infiltration, lamination and pyrolysis by using carbon nanotubes (CNTs) films as surface layers and carbon foam (CF) as intermediate layer. The SiBCN@CNTs surface layer with high electrical conductivity effectively reflects most of electromagnetic waves, and the SiBCN@CF intermediate layer further increases the absorption of incoming waves via ohmic loss and multiple reflection loss. The construction of the conductive SiBCN@CF layer can effectively enhance the total EMI shielding effectiveness (EMI SE Total ) of the films up to 44.3 dB, much higher than that of 25.8 dB for the sandwiched film with nonconductive intermediate layer. Moreover, increased porosity in the SiBCN@CF layer endows the SiBCN@CF/CNTs film with a high specific EMI SE Total of up to 131.2 dB cm 3 g −1 causes by increased multiple reflection loss. Therefore, it is an ideal route to construct a conductive network and porous structure in sandwiched EMI material for achieving high-efficiency shielding performance.
