Metal-organic framework-templated porous SnO/C polyhedrons for high-performance lithium-ion batteries

Zhuo Bian,Ang Li,Renyue He,Huaihe Song,Xiaohong Chen,Jisheng Zhou,Zhaokun Ma

Metal-organic frameworks can provide excellent templates for the preparation of nanomaterials for green energy storage. However, it is still a formidable challenge for the synthesis of MOF-templated Sn-based nanomaterials with controllable morphologies and structures. Here, Sn-based MOFs with different morphologies are synthesized by a facial and controllable method, then SnO/C polyhedrons with shapes of cube and stellated octahedron are obtained using the Sn-based MOFs as template by further heat treatment, respectively. Benefited from the composite structures, the SnO/C polyhedrons exhibit excellent electrochemical performances in lithium storage. A high reversible capacity of 950 mA h g −1 is obtained at a current density of 50 mA g −1 after 100 cycles, together with superior cyclic stability and remarkable rate capacity. This paper provides an effective route to prepare high-performance Sn-based anode materials from the morphology-controlled MOFs for lithium-ion batteries.

Interfacial chemical bonding enhanced SnO₂ NPs@AC composite for highly sensitive electrochemical detection of dopamine

Caiqing Song,Qiaoling Shen,Linghui Hao,Meirou Jing,Shiquan Zhao,Lijun Bian

One-step co-hydrothermal synthesis of SnO₂ NPs@AC composite without tedious template procedures. • In-situ formed Sn O C interfacial bonds confirmed by XPS and Raman, enhancing charge transfer. • Uniform dispersion of SnO₂ nanoparticles (∼12 nm) on porous AC matrix, maximizing electroactive surface area. • Excellent dopamine sensing: LOD 21.6 nM, high sensitivity, good reproducibility, and recovery in serum. In this study, a SnO₂ nanoparticles@amorphous carbon (SnO₂ NPs@AC) composite was successfully synthesized via a facile co-hydrothermal method followed by high-temperature calcination, using glucose as the carbon precursor and SnCl₄ as the tin source. The structural and morphological properties of the as-prepared composites were systematically characterized. The results confirmed that the ultrafine SnO₂ NPs were uniformly dispersed and firmly anchored on the AC surface through in situ formed Sn O C chemical bonds, creating an intimately coupled heterointerface. Owing to this unique architecture, the SnO₂ NPs@AC-modified electrode exhibited excellent electrochemical sensing performance for dopamine (DA). Under optimized conditions, the sensor delivered a wide linear response in the range of 0.2–20 μM, a low detection limit of 2.16 × 10 −2  μM, and a high sensitivity of 1.33 μA·μM −1 . Moreover, the sensor demonstrated excellent selectivity against common interferents. When applied to real biological samples (fetal bovine serum), satisfactory recovery rates ranging from 97.7 to 100.9% were achieved. However, its long-term stability (∼60% retention after 10 days) remains a limitation that requires further improvement for practical applications. This study provides a simple and scalable strategy for constructing high-performance hybrid electrode materials through interfacial chemical bond engineering, with promising potential for biomedical sensing applications. Ammonium tartrate-templated synthesis of SnO₂-based SiO₂ nanotubes composites for stable lithium-ion batteries

Hu Kaihan,Cai Jiahui,Shi Zixu,Tan Xiaojun,Wang Li,Chen Jingbo,He Xiangming

Silicon dioxide (SiO₂), an anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), faces critical challenges such as irreversible phase transitions, severe volume expansion, and interfacial side reactions, leading to low initial Coulombic efficiency and poor cycling stability. To address these issues, this study proposes a novel design of SnO₂-based SiO₂ nanotubes composites (SiO₂/SnO₂) synthesized using ammonium tartrate as a water-soluble template. The hollow tubular structure effectively accommodates volume changes of SiO 2 during lithiation/delithiation, while SnO₂ component can contribute lithium storage capacity and improve the electrochemical reaction kinetics. The optimized SiO₂/SnO₂ composite exhibits a high discharge capacity of 778.07 mAh g⁻ 1 with a Coulombic efficiency exceeding 98% after 200 cycles at 1 A g⁻ 1 . Additionally, it demonstrates excellent rate capability, achieving 715.6 mAh g⁻ 1 at 1 A g⁻ 1 and recovering to 927.9 mAh g⁻ 1 when the current density returns to 0.1 A g⁻ 1 . The synergistic combination of structural engineering and SnO₂ functionality not only mitigates mechanical degradation but also enhances reaction kinetics. This work provides a scalable strategy for developing high-performance anode materials with improved energy density and long-term cyclability for advanced LIBs.

Broadband visible luminescence in tin fluorophosphate glasses with ultra-low glass transition temperature

Yajie Wang,Yue Yu,Ya Zou,Liyan Zhang,Lili Hu,Danping Chen

The structure of tin fluorophosphate glasses and their low melting point properties have attracted a great deal of attention recently, but their own luminescent features have not been well studied. Photoluminescence properties of ultra-low glass transition temperature (<200 °C) tin fluorophosphate glasses with varying SnO/SnF2 molar ratios at room temperature have been investigated in the present study. Broad photoluminescence in the range from 400 nm to 700 nm, originating from the S1–S0 and T1–S0 transitions of Sn2+ with the ultra-high concentration (70 mol%), was obtained. And the SnF2–SnO–P2O5 glasses exhibited a fast decay lifetime of 2 ns. Both wavelengths of the excitation peak and emission peak depend on the local structure of Sn2+, which is influenced by different SnO/SnF2 molar ratios. White light can be generated by appropriately altering the SnO/SnF2 molar ratios in the SnF2–SnO–P2O5 glasses. The ultra-low glass transition temperature SnF2–SnO–P2O5 glasses without rare earth elements are a possible candidate for future high white light emission.

Loofah sponge-templated synthesis of multilayered mesoporous SnO₂ with excellent NO₂ detection performance at low temperatures

Yanhui Sun,Kehan Qian,Shupeng Sun,Jiawen Cui,Xiaogan Li,Dongye Han,LiXin Shang

Nitrogen dioxide is a hazard to the natural environment and human health. Therefore, it is necessary to design a nitrogen dioxide sensor to detect NO 2 . In this work, using SnCl 2 as the raw material and loofah sponge as the bio-template, SnO 2 -bio was synthesized through simple immersion and calcination, inheriting the multilayer mesoporous structure of the bio-template. Compared to commercially available SnO 2 , this material has a larger specific surface area and offers more oxygen vacancies for the reaction with adsorbed gases. At 92℃, the SnO 2 -bio sensor exhibits a higher response value of 247.6–5 ppm NO 2 . Meanwhile, it has faster response and recovery speeds of 65/43 s, respectively. The SnO 2 -bio sensor also has excellent selectivity, long-term stability, and cycling stability. Furthermore, in-situ techniques and density functional theory were employed to investigate the mechanism of sensitization and the effect of oxygen vacancies on gas adsorption.

Fast ion diffusion kinetics based on ferroelectric and piezoelectric effect of SnO2/BaTiO3 heterostructures for high-rate sodium storage

Rui Li,Guoqiang Zhang,Yingtao Wang,Zhangwen Lin,Chuanxin He,Yongliang Li,Xiangzhong Ren,Peixin Zhang,Hongwei Mi

Acceleration of reaction kinetics is urgently pursued for high-rate sodium ion batteries, while the utilization of ferroelectric and piezoelectric effect to form local micro electric field to facilitate ion transport has rarely been reported. Herein, a coherent tin oxide/barium titanate heterostructure encapsulated inside nitrogen-doped carbon nanofibers (SnO 2 /BaTiO 3 @NCNF) is introduced as sodium ion battery anode, exhibiting high capacity retention (82% over 2000 cycles at 2 A g 1 ) and stunning long-term cyclability (183.4 mAh g 1 after 10,000 cycles at 5 A g 1 ). The local potential produced by piezoelectric and ferroelectric effect of BaTiO 3 (BTO) can boost sodium ion diffusion kinetics and promote rate performance of SnO 2 anode. The piezoelectric effect is initiated from exploiting the drawback of volume expansion of SnO 2 , while the ferroelectric effect is originated from the charge separation of polarized BTO particles under external electric field. Such principle is instructive for alloying-type and convention-type anodes of alkali-ion batteries.

Energy Band-Modulated SnO Anodes with Improved Rate Capacity and Initial Coulombic Efficiency for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Wang Yao,Qiang Li,Peng Qin,Jun Qian,Xuli Ding

An efficient interface and composition modification strategy is proposed to significantly increase the rate capacity and initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) of SnO anodes via energy band structure modulation for Na-ion batteries (SIBs). The as-fabricated SnO@Bi@C material with Bi nanocrystals homogeneously dispersed on and around the SnO surface is prepared by an electrospinning method. The excellently dispersed Bi nanocrystals realize an effective interface contact with SnO and Na2O, which effectively lowers the electron conduction barriers and promotes sodium-ion release and transport upon the desodiation process, increasing the rate capacity and ICE of the SnO anode. The prepared SnO@Bi@C exhibits a much higher rate capacity up to 10 A g–1, except an improved ICE of 80.67%, compared to 57.38% of SnO@C. Importantly, the intercalation of Na+ between layer-structured Bi galleries provides a good basis for excellent cycle stability due to the highways constructed inside the prepared composites. This finding provides an effective tactic to establish ion transport high-speed channels, which essentially increase the rate performance and the ICE of the SnO-based anodes.

Facilely transforming bulk materials to SnO/pristine graphene 2D-2D heterostructures for stable and fast lithium storage

Pinxian Jiang,Jialun Jing,Yizhe Wang,Hongju Li,Xiaoying He,Yungui Chen,Wei Liu

Two-dimensional (2D) nano-structured tin monoxide (SnO) offers fascinating possibilities as anode material for lithium ion batteries (LIBs). 2D architectures of SnO are highly desirable to access advanced lithium storage properties however their application is impeded by the lack of synthetic method. In this study, we report a scalable synthetic route to facilely deriving SnO/pristine-graphene (p-G) 2D-2D heterostructure from bulk SnO and graphite. A “top-down” synthetic method was found effective in transforming SnO micro-sized particles into nanosheets down to a few nanometers in thickness. Assembled with pristine graphene (p-G), the SnO nanosheets were used to build a SnO/p-G heterostructure that delivers remarkable Li-ion storage performances: reversible capacities of 633.9 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.05 A g −1 , and excellent cycling stabilities (0.027% capacity fade per cycle at 1 A g −1 after 700 cycles) were obtained. In comparison, raw SnO exhibited severe SEI over-growth and continuous capacity decay from the on-set at 0.05 A g −1 . The structural advantages of 2D-2D heterostructure were elucidated to understand its exceptional lithium storage properties. This study demonstrates a facile and scalable strategy for producing 2D-2D heterostructures from low-cost bulk materials for LIBs application.

Insights into enhanced broadband near-infrared emission of Bi-doped aluminosilicate glass by the addition of SnO

Shiwen Song,Song Xiang,Qiya Liu,Min Zhang

A series of Bi/Sn co-doped aluminosilicate glasses were prepared and the optical and structural properties of the samples were investigated. The near-infrared (NIR) luminescence properties of the glass were significantly improved by the co-doping of Bi and Sn. The NIR emission peaks of samples exhibit near 1220 nm. The addition of SnO changes the glass structure and induces a decrease in the number of negative charges in the local field of Bi, which causes the Bi valence state to change from a high valence state to a low valence state. The appropriate amount of Bi 2 O 3 increases the number of Bi luminescent centers and realizes the transformation of the luminescent centers from Bi + to Bi 0 . These results suggest that regulating the doping concentration of SnO and Bi 2 O 3 is a convenient method to control the valence state of active ions and enhance the NIR luminescence properties of aluminosilicate glasses.

High-stability and skin-conformable temperature sensors based on all-solution-processed SnO₂@Ag core-shell nanowires

Lulu Wang,Hui Wang,Mingyang Wang,Bokun Chang,Haojie Gao,Shihui Yu

Ultra-stable, transparent, skin-conformable SnO₂@Ag NWs temperature sensors. • Sensors show a working range (30–130°C) and high sensitivity (TCR=0.31%°C⁻¹). • Excellent stability under chemical corrosion, 300 thermal cycles, and 3000 bends. • Sensors exhibit rapid response (1.5 s) and recovery (1.2 s). • Applied for monitoring human skin temperature and respiratory status. Skin-conformable temperature sensors with high stability and sensitivity are essential for electronic skin and real-time health monitoring. However, achieving high stability while preserving sensitivity and a broad linear working range remains a challenge. Herein, we report a novel, highly stable resistive temperature sensor based on an all-solution-processed SnO₂@Ag core-shell nanowire composite, embedded in an ultrathin polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) substrate (~5.1 μm) via laser direct writing. The conformal SnO₂ shell (~2 nm) protects Ag NWs from degradation without compromising conductivity and transparency. The resulting sensor exhibits high optical transparency (89.5% at 550 nm), a linear temperature sensing range of 30–130 °C, a temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) of 0.31% °C⁻¹ , and a temperature resolution of 0.5 °C. Notably, the sensor demonstrates stable resistance after 300 thermal cycles (30–80 °C) and 3000 bending cycles, with a maximum hysteresis error of 1.73% over the full range, highlighting its mechanical and thermal robustness. Furthermore, the core-shell structure imparts robust resistance to moisture, oxidants, and salt solutions, ensuring reliable operation in harsh environments. As a proof-of-concept, the sensor enables precise, skin-conformal measurement of human body temperature, and offers a rapid response/recovery time of 1.5 s/1.2 s for respiratory pattern monitoring, showing its significant potential for electronic skin applications. Humidity sensor based on ZnS/SnO2 nanocomposites with improved sensing properties

Qianqian Li,Fan Li,Peng Li,Shuguo Yu

This work prepared ZnS, SnO 2 , and zinc oxide/tin dioxide (ZnS/SnO 2 ) composite materials by the hydrothermal method, and systematically studied their physicochemical properties. Humidity sensors were constructed based on these materials, and their humidity-sensing performances were tested. The characterization results show that ZnS has a cubic sphalerite structure, SnO 2 has an orthorhombic rutile structure, and the surface of ZnS/SnO 2 composites is rich in hydrophilic functional groups such as hydroxyl groups (-OH) and high-density oxygen vacancy defects. The results of the humidity-sensitive performance study showed that the ZnS/SnO 2 composites prepared under specific conditions exhibited good humidity-sensitive properties. These conditions include a molar ratio of ZnS to SnO 2 of 1:15, a reaction time of 12 h, and a reaction temperature of 200°C. The ZnS/SnO 2 humidity sensor, designed according to these optimized parameters, exhibits excellent performance at room temperature. It has an extremely high response of 2.14 × 10 6  %, a minimum hysteresis of 2.4 %, excellent linearity, and fast response and recovery times of 9.7 s and 38.6 s, respectively, over a humidity range of 11 % RH to 95 % RH. The successful fabrication of the ZnS/SnO 2 humidity sensor not only demonstrates its superior performance but also provides valuable insights into the design of high-performance sensors.

Doping Effects of Various Carrier Suppressing Elements on Solution-Processed SnOx-Based Thin-Film Transistors

Zhaogui Wang,Qian Wu,Minmin Li,Jin Wu,Lijuan Liang,Gongtan Li,Shan Li,Yafang Wang,Chuan Liu

We have studied indium-free, solution-processed thin-film transistors (TFTs) based on tin-based oxide (SnOx) semiconductors with various dopants. The dopants include aluminum (Al), zirconium (Zr), and yttrium (Y) for their electron-suppressing properties and elemental abundance. A series of doping ratio has been studied and the doped devices exhibit improved switching characteristics as compared with pure SnOx-based TFTs. A SnOx-based TFT having a Zr-to-Sn ratio of 6.67% shows high performance with saturation mobility of 3.1 cm2/Vs, a turn on voltage of -5.4 V, and an ON- OFF current ratio of 4.9 × 106. X-ray photoelectronic spectroscopy studies were used to confirm that Zr can suppress oxygen vacancies effectively and significantly reduce carrier concentration. Furthermore, low-voltage SnZrO TFTs based on a solution-processed ZrO2 dielectric layer were fabricated and performed at high saturation mobility of 10.9 cm2/Vs. This research may provide new valuable insights for improving SnOx-based TFT performance.
