Microstructure control is crucial for thermoelectrics since it is intimately related to the scattering mechanism of both electrons and phonons. Herein, we propose a new strategy to modify microstructure by phase regulation that simultaneously induces high carrier mobility and low lattice thermal conductivity . As demonstrated in layered SnSe 2 , the addition of Cu can induce a phase transition from space group P 3 ¯ m 1 to P 6 3 mc . Due to the enlarged formation energy of stacking faults in the later phase, the stacking fault density is greatly reduced after heat treatment that leads to an increased grain size . Accordingly, the carrier mobility of SnSe 1.97 Br 0.03 –3 % Cu sample is enhanced by 100 % at room temperature. Furthermore, the reduction of stacking fault density is accompanied by the formation of pores in the matrix, which results in low lattice thermal conductivity . As a result, a record peak zT of 1.13 for SnSe 2 -based materials is achieved at 773 K, and the attained ZT ave of 0.62 is a record-high value among n -type polycrystalline layered materials working in intermediate-to-high temperature region. This work provides a feasible strategy to decouple the electron and phonon transport in layered thermoelectric compounds by phase-dependent microstructure modification.

Wastewater containing triphenylmethane dyes such as malachite green (MG), discharged by textile and food industries, poses significant carcinogenic risks and ecological hazards. Conventional physical adsorption methods fail to degrade these pollutants effectively. To address this challenge, we focused on two-dimensional SnSe2semiconductor materials. While their narrow bandgap and unique structure confer exceptional optoelectronic properties, prior research has predominantly emphasized heterojunction systems. We synthesized SnSe2with well-defined hexagonal plate-like structures via a one-step hydrothermal method by precisely controlling precursor ratios (Sn:Se = 1:2) and reaction temperatures (120–240 °C). Systematic investigations revealed that hydrothermal temperature modulates the van der Waals forces between crystal planes, enabling selective exposure of (001) and (011) facets, as confirmed by XRD, SEM, and XPS analyses, thereby influencing the exposure of specific crystal facets. Experiments demonstrated that pure SnSe2synthesized at 150 °C achieved complete degradation of MG (40 mg/L) within 60 min under visible light irradiation, exhibiting a reaction rate constant (k) of 0.099 min⁻¹. By regulating the exposure ratio of the active (001)/(011) facets, we demonstrate that crystal facet engineering directly optimizes carrier separation efficiency, thereby substantially enhancing the catalytic performance of standalone SnSe2. This work proposes a novel strategy for designing noble-metal-free, high-efficiency standalone photocatalysts, providing crystal facet-dependent mechanistic insights for the targeted degradation of industrial dyes.

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have garnered significant attention in optoelectronic due to their unique structural and electronic properties. Among them, SnSe 2 and SnS 2 offer advantages of abundant reserves, low price and facile processing. In this work, we successfully synthesized SnSe 2 -SnS 2 nanosheets with an interesting lateral heterostructure via van der Waals edge epitaxial growth using a hydrothermal method. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations of surface energy and interfacial adhesion work revealed that the stronger covalent bonding between their (100) planes is the key thermodynamic factor governing the preferred lateral growth mode, despite their comparable lattice mismatch. The synergistic effect between the lateral heterojunction and the S-scheme interface with Se/S vacancies establishes a robust built-in electric field, which drastically promotes the excitation, separation, and migration of photogenerated charges, thereby significantly enhancing the photocatalytic activity. Evaluation of the photocatalytic performance demonstrated that the heterostructure degrades methyl orange (MO) at a rate 7.9 and 3.8 times faster than pure SnSe 2 and SnS 2 , respectively, and maintains over 70% of its initial activity after six consecutive cycles. This work provides mechanistic insights into the lateral growth mode of 2D materials and, through the synergistic design of band alignment and interface engineering, offers a novel paradigm for developing highly efficient and stable photocatalysts.

The exploration of high-capacity anode materials is extremely vital for the progress of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). SnSe 2 is of great interest, on account of its low cost and high theoretical specific capacity, when used as the anode of LIBs. SnSe 2 exhibits drastic capacity decay at high rates, due to its inherent low electrical conductivity, as well as its sluggish kinetics and huge volume expansion during charging and discharging. In this work, flexible Sn-based nanofibers were synthesized by electrostatic spinning, followed by high-temperature calcination and selenization to obtain the final SnSe 2 @NCNFs. The SnSe 2 nanoparticles were encapsuled in carbon nanofibers with good ductility after annealing at 600°C. The carbon nanofibers not only act as self-supporting substrates but also improve the conductivity of the composite and retard volume expansion of SnSe 2 . With the above advantages, the integrated SnSe 2 @NCNFs is able to provide good stability, with 144.3 mA h g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 after 1000 cycles. Graphical Abstract

The detection of air pollutant nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) is of great importance arising from its great harm to the ecological environment and human health. However, the detection range of most NO 2 sensors is ppm-level, and it is still challenging to achieve lower concentration (ppb-level) NO 2 detection. Herein, 2D tin diselenide nanoflakes decorated with 1D zinc oxide nanowires (SnSe 2 /ZnO) heterojunctions were first reported by facile hydrothermal and ultra-sonication methods. The response of the fabricated SnSe 2 /ZnO sensor enhances 3.41 times on average compared with that of pure SnSe 2 sensor to 50–150 ppb NO 2 with a high detection sensitivity (22.57 ppm -1 ) at room temperature. In addition, the SnSe 2 /ZnO sensor has complete recovery, negligible cross-sensitivity, and small relative standard deviation (6.98%) during the 1 month sensing test, which can meet the requirements for NO 2 detection in environmental monitoring. The enhanced NO 2 sensing performance can be attributed to the n-n heterojunction constructed between SnSe 2 and ZnO. The as-prepared sensor based on SnSe 2 /ZnO hybrid significantly promotes the development of the low detection limit of the NO 2 sensor at room temperature.

Tin selenide (SnSe2) is an ideal anode in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) owing to its high theoretical capacity and high conductivity for both electrons and ions. Herein, we design a unique heterostructure with 2D SnSe2 nanosheets supported on graphene, where the chemical coupling effect is formed between graphene and SnSe2, working as a cushion to buffer the volume change of electrodes. The 2D/2D SnSe2/graphene heterostructure has a reversible capacity of 490.9 mAh g −1 at a current rate of 0.1C, with an ultra-long cycling stability with capacity retention of 59.3% after 1500 cycles at 0.5C, and can well work at temperatures from −30 to 70 °C. Ex situ X-ray diffraction reveals that the long-term capacity is ascribed to reversible reaction of generating LixSn with Sn and Li, and the capacity loss is attributed to the irreversible reaction with the appearance of Li2Se. The remarkable electrochemical performances, such as high specific capacity, acceptable rate feature, ultra-long cycling life, and wide temperature operation, make the SnSe2/grapheme heterostructure very potential for all-climate LIBs.

Transition metal oxides are regarded as the prospective anode materials for next-generation sodium-ion batteries owing to their high theoretical capacity. Nevertheless, its low conductivity and large volume variation obstruct its practical applications. In this study, a design of heterostructured SnO 2 /SnSe 2 nanoparticles encapsulated by a carbon shell (C/SnO 2 /SnSe 2 @C) synthesized through a templating method and in-situ gas-phase selenization process. The rich heterostructures and the interfacial effect induced by a built-in electric field significantly accelerate reaction kinetics and enhance the reaction activity. When employed as an anode for sodium-ion batteries , C/SnO 2 /SnSe 2 @C electrodes achieve a superior rate performance (238.4 mAh/g at 5.0 A/g) and cycling performance (422.3 mAh/g at 0.1 A/g after 150 cycles; 289.7 mAh/g at 1.0 A/g after 200 cycles). A quantitative examination into the origin demonstrated that the Na + storage is dominated by the fast surface redox reaction , which endows the heterostructure with a durable rate performance. Moreover, based on a dQ/dV analysis and in situ X-ray diffraction results, the C/SnO 2 /SnSe 2 @C anode has a hybrid mechanism of SnO 2 (conversion and alloying reaction) and SnSe 2 (intercalation, conversion, and alloying reactions). This strategy of the heterostructure design provides a potential route to develop high-performance sodium-ion storage materials and sheds light on the behavior of Na-storage mechanisms.

Re doping coordinates electrical and thermal transport in Cu/Br co-doped SnSe 2 . • Re secondary phases and associated lattice distortion enhance phonon scattering. • The 0.75% Re-doped sample achieves a peak z T of ∼0.78 at 773 K. Transition-metal doping is considered as an effective strategy to improve the thermoelectric performance of SnSe 2 -based semiconductors, since it can simultaneously optimize electronic transport and phonon scattering. Herein, Re was introduced into the Sn-rich Cu/Br co-doped SnSe 2 (SCSB) system. Microstructural characterizations reveal partial Re incorporation into the SnSe 2 lattice together with Re precipitates, while first-principles calculations using a hypothetical Re-for-Cu substitution configuration show a reduced band gap and enhanced DOS accumulation around the band edges, suggesting favorable electronic-structure modulation. Finally, the 0.75% Re-doped SCSB sample achieves a peak zT of ∼0.78 at 773 K, reaching a competitive level among reported n-type SnSe 2 -based thermoelectric materials prepared by solid-state reaction and spark plasma sintering procedure. This work demonstrates that transition-metal doping is an effective and facile strategy for the synergistic optimization of electrical and thermal transport in SnSe 2 -based systems. Layered n-type SnSe2 is a promising eco-friendly thermoelectric (TE) material, yet its practical application is constrained by low carrier concentration and the inherent coupling of electronic-thermal transport. Herein, a CuCl annealing strategy is developed to leverage Cu interstitial intercalation for the precise modulation of electronic band structures and phonon dispersions in SnSe2. By synergizing with the Cu-induced formation of SnSe heterojunctions, this approach effectively decouples electron and phonon transport. Consequently, the SnSe2-2 mol% CuCl sample achieves a maximum power factor (PF) of 0.74 mW m-1 K-2 and surpasses pristine SnSe2 by 8-fold. Furthermore, the κL is reduced to 0.53 W m-1 K-1 at 723 K, marking a 31% decrease relative to pristine SnSe2. This translates to a dimensionless figure of merit (zT) of 0.88 at 723 K parallel to the spark plasma sintering direction. Notably, we fabricate the first SnSe2-based single-leg thermoelectric generator (TEG), which delivers an energy conversion efficiency of about 2% under a ΔT of 340.8 K. By effectively decoupling electronic and thermal transport, this work unlocks the full potential of eco-friendly SnSe2, providing a sustainable and high-performance paradigm for green energy harvesting without relying on toxic elements.

Work-function differences between SnO 2 and SnSe 2 induces interfacial band bending and constructing a built-in electric field • The BIEF enriches electrons on Sn sites for strong adsorption, while populating Li- S antibonding orbitals to weaken the bonds • Complementary barriers of SnO 2 /SnSe 2 with HCNF anchoring/buffering enable Li-S battery high capacity and long cycling The shuttle effect and sluggish conversion kinetics of polysulfides severely hinder the practical application of lithium‑sulfur (Li S) batteries. In this work, a novel SnO 2 /SnSe 2 heterostructure anchored on helical carbon nanofibers (HCNFs) is designed and fabricated as a sulfur cathode host (SnO 2 /SnSe 2 @HCNFs//S). The differences in electronegativity and ionic radius between oxygen and selenium drive interfacial electron transfer and generate a built-in electric field (BIEF), endowing the heterojunction with an electronic configuration that combines strong overall adsorption and weak Li S bonds, thereby breaking the conventional balances between adsorption strength and catalytic activity. SnO 2 exhibits a lower energy barrier for the S 8 to Li 2 S n conversion, while SnSe 2 shows a lower barrier for the Li 2 S n to Li 2 S conversion, demonstrating complementary functions, and the BIEF further reduces the overall energy barrier of the multistep reduction to the lowest level. The defect sites of the helical carbon fibers ensure highly dispersed loading of the heterojunction, and the spring-like helical morphology buffers volume expansion and maintains long-term cycling stability. The SnO 2 /SnSe 2 @HCNFs//S cathode delivers an outstanding discharge specific capacity of 1008.2 mAh g −1 at 0.2C, retains over 99.7% of coulombic efficiency after 200 cycles at 0.2C, and a rate performance of 932.4 mAh g −1 even at 2.0C, with rate and cycling performance significantly superior to those of single-phase materials and control samples. This work provides an effective strategy for the rational design of high-performance sulfur hosts for Li S batteries. Helical carbon nanofibers (HCNFs) with abundant defect sites serve as a substrate for anchoring SnO 2 /SnSe 2 heterojunction nanoparticles, ensuring highly dispersed exposure. Work function mismatch drives electron transfer from SnSe 2 to SnO 2 , enhancing Sn S adsorption while injecting electrons into Li S antibonding orbitals to weaken bonds. SnO 2 lowers reaction barrier from S 8 to Li 2 S n , and SnSe 2 lowers barrier from Li 2 S n to Li 2 S, and the built-in electric field further reduces the multistep energy barrier of sulfur conversions, thereby achieving efficient polysulfide adsorption and catalytic conversion. Industrial wastewater causes serious water pollution, so it is urgent to remove toxic dyes like malachite green (MG). In this study, a 0D/2D S-scheme heterojunction was constructed by anchoring CeO 2 nanocubes onto SnSe 2 hexagonal nanosheets via a precisely controlled two-step hydrothermal strategy. In-situ electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis corroborates that illumination triggers the proliferation of surface oxygen vacancies. These photo-induced oxygen vacancies (OVs, oxygen vacancies) empower the CeO 2 /SnSe 2 heterostructure to sustain exceptional catalytic activity over five consecutive cycles. Moreover, the optimized 0.2 g CeO 2 /SnSe 2 composite exhibits a remarkable degradation efficiency of 100% for MG within 30 min. Such performance enhancement is attributed to the synergy between the 0D/2D dimensional matching and a potent internal electric field (IEF), which triggers an S-scheme charge transfer mechanism to preserve high redox potential while accelerating carrier separation. This work provides a sophisticated blueprint for designing dimension-matched S-scheme heterojunctions for high-performance environmental remediation.
