Low power density and poor wear resistance seriously hinder the application of a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) in daily environments. However, current research has mainly focused on improving the performance of TENGs through inorganic fillers while neglecting the important property of wear resistance. Due to the excellent properties of stearic acid (SA), such as its cheap and easy availability, high electronegativity, wear resistance, hydrophobicity, and lubricity, as well as promoting the formation of electroactive β phase polyvinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP), SA can be used as an organic multifunctional filler to improve the electrical output performance and wear resistance of TENG while increasing its hydrophobicity. In this work, we doped SA into polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)/PVDF-HFP matrix by solution casting method and template method to form SA-doped PTFE/PVDF-HFP(SA-PTFE/PVDF-HFP) composite polymer film, which were assembled with silk to form SA-TENG. Most importantly, the addition of 3 wt % SA not only increases the voltage and current of TENG by 3.7 times and 3.6 times, respectively, but also reduces the coefficient of friction and the amount of wear of TENG by 40.8 and 87.5%, respectively, and increases the hydrophobic angle by 12 to 133°, which ensures the long-term and stable operation of TENG in different environments. In addition, SA-TENG can not only harvest energy from the surrounding environment and charge portable electronic devices but can also be used as a self-powered sensor to monitor human movement. This study not only provides a feasible strategy for organic fillers to solve the bottleneck problem of TENG application but also broadens the application scenarios of TENG.

Hydrogels have attracted extensive research interest due to their remarkable stretchability and flexibility, enabling their integration into advanced applications such as flexible sensors, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG), and supercapacitors. However, their high free water content renders them susceptible to freezing at subzero temperatures, leading to a loss of flexibility and severely restricting their performance in cold environments. To address this challenge, a freeze-resistant eutectic hydrogel composed of polyacrylamide (PAM)/deep eutectic solvent (DES)/phytic acid (PA) (PDP) eutectic hydrogel is systematically fabricated by partially replacing the free water in conventional hydrogels with DES. PDP eutectic hydrogel exhibits a combination of excellent properties, including high transparency (93%), exceptional stretchability (up to 1934% strain), and a high gauge factor (GF = 8.20). Importantly, PDP eutectic hydrogel retains excellent flexibility and stable sensing performance under extremely low temperatures. Its high sensitivity enables precise, real-time monitoring of human motions in flexible sensor arrays, which supports the development of a deep learning-integrated system capable of capturing subtle grasping motions and distinguishing between objects of varying shapes. This work offers a novel strategy to address the intrinsic freezing limitations of conventional hydrogels, significantly expanding their potential for use in demanding and low-temperature environments.

The development of triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG)-powered gas sensors capable of actively harvesting environmental energy has become critically important in today's energy-conscious world. This study presents a triethylamine (TEA) gas sensor based on a PVA/MXene/CoFe 2 O 4 nanocomposite hydrogel TENG, utilizing heterointerface-rich MXene/CoFe 2 O 4 nanomaterials combined with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) polymer matrix. Systematic characterization via XRD, XPS, SEM, and TEM elucidated the composite's elemental composition and microstructure. The PTMC-7 TENG-powered sensor demonstrated exceptional electrical output, generating 170 V open-circuit voltage under 7 N contact force at 1 Hz frequency - sufficient to power 30 LEDs through rectifier-integrated circuits. Its silicone encapsulation enabled finger-joint mounted micro-motion detection. The sensor exhibited 105.11 % response to 100 ppm TEA at room temperature with fast response/recovery (31 s/23 s) and outstanding stability (<3.2 % degradation over 30 days). By converting TENG output modulation into gas concentration readings, this design achieves battery-free TEA detection while synergistically integrating energy harvesting and sensing functionalities, establishing a novel paradigm for flexible sensor development.

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) offer new avenues for the development of sustainable energy conversion and self-powered smart devices, where new triboelectric materials with high dielectric constant may be the key for enhancing the surface charge density and output. In this study, different concentrations of barium titanate (BTO) nanoparticles are introduced into the polycarbonate (PC) matrix using the phase inversion technique. A high-performance TENG (PB-TENG) was then developed with a power density of 436 mW/m2 using the as-synthesized PC/BTO composite film as the positive triboelectric electrode material. Compared to PB-TENG at 0% BTO doping, the peak power density was increased by 153%. This enhancement of power output should be attributed to the synergistic effect of increased dielectric constant and surface roughness of the composite film. The Arrayed-Smart Bracelet (A-SB) is designed for health monitoring and motion recognition in swimming, offering high sensitivity, stability, and selectivity for self-powered water sports safety monitoring.

Single-electrode triboelectric nanogenerators (SE-TENGs) are versatile tools for energy harvesting with simple structures and great practicability. However, low output performance hinders SE-TENGs in applications as portable power sources. Herein, a novel SE-TENG that utilizes glass fiber fabric (GFF) as tribo-materials, along with an inorganic ferroelectric film for the dielectric layer is proposed. The GFF is first shown to be a promising tribo-material for its highly positive tribo-polarity and unique chemical/mechanical/durable properties. Meanwhile, an inorganic dielectric film with high dielectric constant is introduced between the GFF and Al electrode for enhancing the charge trapping capability. Owing to the synergistic effect of optimized triboelectrification and dielectric properties, the specific designed SE-TENG delivers an open-circuit voltage of 1640 V and a short-circuit current density of 59.05 mA m −2 , which are superior to most reported SE-TENGs. With a maximum instantaneous power of 11.30 mW, the device can light up 1350 light-emitting diodes, charge a 47 µF capacitor into 10 V in 421 s, and power up a digital watch even without additional control circuits. This work provides new insights in designing high-performance SE-TENGs and facilitates their application in biomechanical energy harvesting and portable power sources.

Gel-based triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) has demonstrated promising potentials in stretchable electronics owing to gel electrodes’ intrinsic softness, stretchability, and conductivity. However, delamination between gel and elastomer layers in deformations remains a considerable challenge for gel-based TENG, which most often induces structure failure. Herein, gels are regarded as adhesives and further effectively enhances interfacial bonding strength by a rough interface in adhesives’ view, which exploits gels’ liquid-to-solid transformation. This method just needs surface roughness of elastomer, which avoids chemical modification. Moreover, this method is effective to both organogel with good stickiness and hydrogel with weak stickiness, demonstrating wide applicability to different gels. Owing to the tough gel/elastomer interfacial bonding, TENG-Rough largely solves delamination problem under various deformations and the corresponding output performances of TENG-Rough are also maintained, implying a robust stretchable TENG device for reliable energy harvesting. This work demonstrates a general and facile method to enhance interfacial bonding in an adhesives’ way, which provides a view for addressing delamination problem in gel-based TENGs and other kinds of gel-based devices.

Gait is among the most dependable, accurate, and secure methods of biometric identification. However, high power consumption and low computing capability are two major obstacles on wearable sensors-based gait recognition system. In this work, an integrated system is reported combining a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), a memristor (Ag/HfO x /Pt), and perovskite-based multicolor LEDs (PMCLED) for the visualization and recognition of foot patterns through signal-on-none and multi-wavelength on-device preprocessing. The flexible TENG acts as a sensory receptor, generating voltage based on the duration and intensity of pressure, which in turn promotes voltage-triggered synaptic plasticity in the memristor. The PMCLED, with its threshold switching and multi-wavelength emission characteristics, enables nonlinear filtering and amplification of the synaptic signal from the memristor, resulting in a simplified system design and reduced background noise. Additionally, the effectiveness of on-device preprocessing is validated based on a 5 × 5 array of integrated devices and software-built neural network for foot pattern visualization and recognition. The proposed system is able to recognize the on-device preprocessed images with high accuracy, indicating great potentials in both healthcare monitoring and human-machine interaction.

In the context of the ongoing development of artificial intelligence and 5G technologies, a growing number of sensors are being integrated into the daily lives. Self-powered wearable sensors based on triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) represent an innovative solution to this trend, but the output performance of the flexible TENGs remains suboptimal. In this study, the band-matched calcium titanate (CaTiO 3 ) and zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures are prepared to form CaTiO 3 /ZnO (CTO/ZnO) Schottky heterojunctions. The heterojunctions are subsequently doped into organic ferroelectric polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) to create flexible composite film, which significantly increases the dielectric constant through space charge polarization. Then the CTO/ZnO-PVDF composite films served as triboelectric materials of the CaTiO 3 /ZnO-PVDF-based TENG (CZP-TENG). After optimizing the molar ratio of ZnO to CTO in heterojunction and weight ratio of CTO/ZnO in PVDF, both the output voltage and current density of the TENG are significantly improved, exhibiting a power density of 106.6 mW m −2 . Finally, the CZP-TENG powers light–emitting diodes and a temperature sensor, serves as a wearable sensor, and enables self-powered human body sensing, particularly in gait recognition for preventing of movement-related diseases and injury rehabilitation.

In this work, we design and fabricate a miniature direct current (DC) windmill generator based on dynamic semiconductor/metal Schottky triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), demonstrating a novel way for DC electrical power generation by harvesting wind energy. The semiconducting Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) film and metallic Al foil are designed as the positive-negative friction pair in the DC-TENG, and the softness as well as workability of the friction materials provides excellent flexibility for the design and tailor of a windmill DC-TENG. We systematically studied the effect factors on the output performance of the device, including wind speed, external load, and dimensions of the friction layers. Our device achieves an optimal output performance with a maximum open-circuit voltage (V oc ) of 0.6 V and a maximum short-circuit current (I sc ) of 3.6 μA at the wind speed of 7 m/s for the friction layer area at 2.5 cm 2 . To improve the wear resistance of the devices, we introduce a few lubricating materials at the PEDOT:PSS /Al interface and Polyalphaolefin 4 (PAO 4) can improve both the abrasiveness as well as the V oc and I sc . Our work presents a possible strategy for fabricating miniature windmill DC-TENG and provides a potential supplemental for the traditional electrical magnet windmill with heavy equipment.

MXene materials emerge as promising candidates for energy harvesting and storage application. In this study, the effect of the surface chemistry on the work function of MXenes, which determines the performance of MXene-based triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), is elucidated. First-principles calculations reveal that the surface functional group greatly influences MXene work function: OH termination reduces the work function with respect to that of bare surface, while F and Cl increase it. Then, work functions are experimentally determined by Kelvin probe force microscopy. The MXene prepared by gentle etching at 40 °C for 48 h (GE 40/48 ) has the largest work function. Furthermore, an electron-cloud potential-well model is established to explain the mechanism of electron emission-dominated charge transfer and assemble a triboelectric device to verify experimentally its conclusions. It is found that GE 40/48 has the best performance with a 281 V open-circuit voltage, 9.7 µ A short-current current, and storing 1.019 µ C of charge, which is consistent with the model. Last, a patterned TENG is demonstrated for self-powered human–machine interaction application. This finding enhances the understanding of the inherent mechanism between the surface structure and the output performance of MXene-based TENG, which can be applied to other TENG based on 2D materials.

Raindrops are an abundant micromechanical renewable energy source in nature, and raindrop energy harvesting has always been a research hotspot. Traditional hydropower generation is not suitable for low-frequency energy harvesting, and it is difficult to realize distributed energy harvesting. The development of triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is a promising strategy for converting raindrop energy in the environment into electrical energy. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite has received much attention due to its excellent chemical stability and insulating properties for TENG. However, the deficiency of the low output performance and insufficient hydrophobicity of PDMS limits the application of PDMS in droplet energy capture. Modification of PDMS can improve the droplet energy collection capability of the liquid–solid contact triboelectric (LS-TENG). In this work, a new approach to modifying polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as a hydrophobic negative triboelectric material using a high dielectric constant MXene and a hydrophobic nano-SiO 2 was reported. The as-prepared composites′ permittivity and triboelectric performance were remarkably promoted as compared to composites without interfacial modification. In addition, the use of composites for TENG assembly improved the open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current by a factor of 47.5 and 25.21, respectively, compared to pure PDMS. Application of the composite to the assembled TENG was employed as energy harvester to light up LEDs and charge a capacitor. In addition, a cathodic protection system was designed to demonstrate its potential application in the field of electrochemistry. This provides guidance for the practical implementation of TENGs in the field of electrochemical cathodic protection.

The energy conversion efficiency of a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is severely limited by the charge density of triboelectric materials, while drastic and unavoidable charge decay happens during contact due to the insufficient charge retention capacity of positive triboelectric materials. Here, elaborately synthesized acid-ion-doped pyridine-based polybenzimidazole processing with strong charge retention capability is demonstrated to couple with negatively corona-polarized electrets. As illustrated by thermal stimulation and an ion mass spectrometer, the formation of acid-ion chimerism processes high activation energy for stored charges, and the selective anion migration can compensate the escape of polarized charge. Accordingly, the charge density can reach up to 596 μC m–2 and the charge retention rate reaches 49.7%, which is so far the highest intrinsic charge density obtained in the open air. Thus, the ionic chimerism strategy provides an effective way to suppress the charge escaping in the open air and gives a great expandable avenue for the material challenges of TENG’s practical deployment.
