It is a grand challenge to achieve the omnifarious performance promotion of the thin film composite (TFC) nanofiltration (NF) membranes due to the mutual influence among membrane permeability, selectivity and antifouling ability. Hereon, a rational strategy denoted as hyperbranched polyester (HPE) intervened interfacial polymerization (IP) was proposed to simultaneously improve various membrane properties. HPE with special molecular structure was mixed into the piperazine (PIP) solution to form a composite aqueous phase, and then a modified selective layer was generated via the IP reaction with the trimesoyl chloride (TMC). In this process, the diffusion rate of PIP monomer was reduced because of the steric hindrance effect brought by HPE and the hydrogen bonding interaction between PIP and HPE. Meanwhile, the primary hydroxyl groups in HPE also participated in the polymerization reaction. The structure and separation performance of the resultant membranes were systematically investigated. The results showed that when the HPE dosage was 1 w/v%, the thickness of the modified selective layer was as low as 8.34 nm. The pure water permeability of the corresponding TFC NF membrane was high to 50.62 L·m-2·h-1·bar-1, while keeping the Na2SO4 rejection over 98%. Moreover, this membrane presented long-term stability and antifouling performance.

Nanomaterials have been used in the formulation of thin-film composite (TFC) membranes to improve membrane performance and reduce environmental impact. Here we investigate the role of nanomaterial placement in the active layer versus the support layer of the TFC using carboxylated cellulose nanocrystals (C–CNCs) with high hydrophilicity, aspect ratio, excellent mechanical strength and sustainability. Placement of the C–CNCs in the active layer of the membrane (ALC) yielded a higher permeate flux, while incorporation of these materials in the support layer of the membrane (SLC) improved salt rejection. With different incorporation positions of C–CNCs, the dominant mechanism for salt rejection was different for the ALC and SLC membranes. Surface characterization by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy , X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the successful incorporation of C–CNCs into ALC and SLC membranes. ALC membrane exhibited higher hydrophilicity and more negatively charged surfaces, while SLC membrane displayed thicker and denser polyamide layers. In addition, the enhancement of the mechanical properties of the SLC membrane was superior to that of the ALC membrane due to better compatibility between C–CNCs and the polyethersulfone ultrafiltration support. Significantly, this comparison between the different incorporation positions of nanomaterials provides new insights into the targeted construction of TFC membranes for water treatment.

In this work, a support surface pore structure re-construction method was developed to enhance the flux of thin film composite (TFC) reverse osmosis (RO) membrane. With this method, an aqueous solution of a suitable organic solvent with a certain content, i.e., re-construction agent, was used to swell the support for a period of time and then the swelled support was immersed in water to complete the whole surface pore structure re-construction process. Herein, dimethylacetamide (DMAc) was employed as the organic solvent. It was shown that under proper conditions (i.e., the organic solvent content of 30% v/v, the re-constructing agent contacting time less than 10 s and re-constructing agent contacting temperature of 25 ± 5 °C), the support surface porosity and surface pore density increased a lot with the support surface pore size increasing slightly. The statistical results (obtained from scanning electron microscope images) showed that at the optimal condition, the support surface porosity and surface pore density increased by 92% and 89%, respectively. The results of RO membrane permselectivity obtained using 2000 ppm NaCl solutions and 1.55 MPa transmembrane pressure showed that the support surface pore structure re-construction method could improve the flux by 50.5% at most (an increase from 44.0 to 66.2 L m −2 h −1 ) without sacrificing the salt rejection (all the membranes had a similar and high rejection of 99.38%). Besides, a support surface pore structure re-construction mechanism was proposed, which showed that the support surface pore structure was mainly determined by the diffusion and coalescence of re-construction agent molecules, and polymer chains mobility. This work provides a facile and effective method for preparing TFC RO membranes with high performance.

Reverse osmosis is an effective seawater desalination way extending the available sources of fresh water, but challenged by the gypsum scaling. Herein, D (+)-glucosamine (DGA) was rationally selected and utilized to prepare a novel polyesteramide (PEA) NF membrane that can reject SO 4 2− but release Ca 2+ . Then it was employed in the pretreatment of seawater reverse osmosis to spatially isolate SO 4 2− and Ca 2+ , thus removing the “foundation” for forming gypsum. Compared to the referenced NF270, the optimized sample denoted as DGA-PEA-NF has a looser structure with stronger negative charge, as well as a higher resistance to both organic fouling and chlorine attack. During the pretreatment of seawater, both the water permeability and SO4 2− /Ca 2+ selectivity of the DGA-PEA-NF membrane were much higher than those of NF270; the seawater permeance and SO 4 2− /Ca 2+ selectivity of DGA-PEA-NF were 10.25 L m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 and 7.62, respectively, while those of NF270 were only 5.11 L m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 and 2.08. Consequently, the DGA-PEA-NF membrane effectively reduced the gypsum scaling both in NF and RO stages rather than just transferring the fouling problem forwards to NF stage. The implementation of this research is expected to provide guidance for a targeted fabrication of NF membranes, as well as support for the sustainable development of seawater desalination.

In this study, a nanofiltration (NF) polyamide hollow fiber thin film composite membrane with a low rejection and a high flux was prepared in consideration of the “trade-off” relation between salt rejection and permeate flux of the membrane. The membrane was able to retain the beneficial minerals in tap water while keeping the body healthy. The membrane prepared had a thinner active skin layer (<100 nm) than those of commercial membranes. A permeability of 30.07 L/m 2 /h and a rejection rate of 79.68% for 1,000 mg/L MgSO 4 at 0.2 MPa were obtained. In addiiton, Fe 3+ , Cu 2+ , and Pb 2+ were used to evaluate the heavy metal removal performance of the NF membrane. It was found that as the concentration of heavy metal ions increased to three times of the Standards for Drinking Water Quality (SDWQ) (GB5749-2006), and the rejections to all heavy metal ions were more than 76%. In addition, the NF membrane had a good long-term rejection stability for the heavy metal ions over a 12-month dynamic filtration experiment. The results showed that the newly prepared NF membrane has a good application prospect for domestic water purification.

BAPP-mediated interfacial polymerization was used to construct permeable NF membranes. • BAPP concentration regulated PA crosslinking, pore size and free-volume distribution. • BAPP-0.15 achieved 19.1 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 with 75.5% DOC removal and 40.9 selectivity of Ca 2+ /DOC. • A diffusion-reaction balance governed the structure-selectivity relationship. • The optimized membrane enables organic removal while preserving beneficial minerals. Thin-film composite (TFC) nanofiltration (NF) membranes are attractive for drinking-water treatment; however, conventional polyamide (PA) selective layers rarely combine high water permeance, efficient organic-matter rejection and low mineral-salt rejection. Herein, 1,4-bis(3-aminopropyl) piperazine (BAPP) was used as an aqueous-phase amine monomer to fabricate PA NF membranes via interfacial polymerization (IP), with the BAPP concentration systematically varied to regulate membrane formation. BAPP concentration controlled the balance between monomer diffusion and interfacial reaction, thereby tuning the crosslinking degree, pore size and free-volume fraction of the selective layer. Decreasing the BAPP concentration markedly enhanced water permeance while progressively lowering salt rejection. The optimized BAPP-0.15 membrane balanced network integrity with open transport channels, delivering a water permeance of 19.1 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 (1.5 times that of commercial NF270), DOC removal of 75.5%, UV 254 removal of 74.2% and a Ca 2+ /DOC selectivity of 40.9. Fluorescence spectroscopy and UV 254 -based molecular-weight distribution analysis further confirmed the effective removal of humic-like, protein-like and medium-molecular-weight aromatic organics from natural surface water. This work provides a facile monomer-concentration-regulation strategy for designing NF membranes with enhanced mineral/organic selectivity for healthy drinking-water production. BACKGROUND Tailored design of high-performance nanofiltration membranes is desirable. The physicochemical properties of the organic phaseare essential for the preparation of nanofiltration membranes. Therefore, byfine-tuning the organic phase, it is possible to achieve nanofiltrationmembranes with enhanced performance. RESULTS In this work, oleic acid, a naturally extracted fatty acid, wasintroduced into three different organic solvents (n-heptane, n-octane andisopar G) to construct special oil phases for interfacial polymerization. Testingresults showed that proper dosage of oleic acid addition can effectivelydecrease the nanofiltration membrane pore size and enhance the salt rejectionregardless of the solvent type. Taking n-octane as example, 5% oleic acidaddition in it can decrease the mean pore size from 0.500 nm to 0.341 nm and improve the MgSO 4 rejection from 52.4% to 95.5%. Further characterizationindicated that the introduction of oleic acid into organic solvent cansignificantly reduce the interfacial tension and promote the diffusion of piperazinefrom aqueous phase to the oil phase. In addition, oleic acid could react with piperazineand produce some white particles that could be embed into the polyamide layer, thus altering the surface morphology. CONCLUSION In this work, a novel modified thin film composite nanofiltration membrane was prepared by a simple and controllable oleic acid assisted interfacial polymerization strategy, which exhibits good water permeability, solute selectivity and antifouling property. Without changing the existing process, our strategy opens up a simple, environmentally friendly and operable route for the synthesis of thin film composite nanofiltration membranes. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).

Biofouling is a major challenging issue to be addressed for the successful application of thin-film composite (TFC) polyamide (PA) membranes. In this work, we demonstrated that the presence of divalent cations, especially Ca2+, can intensively aggravate the biofouling on the TFC PA membrane using Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus as model bacteria. To figure out the key surface characteristics of the TFC membrane facilitating the biofouling upon Ca2+ addition, the PA layer was modified by in situ addition of carboxylated chitosan (CCTS) during interfacial polymerization (IP), which induced the increase of surface carboxyl groups, improvement of hydrophilicity, and reduction of surface roughness. By conducting biofouling tests, the importance of carboxyl groups on the membrane surface and their interaction with bacteria via Ca2+-carboxyl bridging in biofouling was verified. The water flux decreased to 49.5% (TFC-control) and 41.6% (TFC-CS (0.3)) of the initial water flux, respectively. Furthermore, by preoccupying carboxyl groups on the PA layer via in situ Ca2+ addition during IP reaction, it was found that reducing the carboxyl density of the PA layer can markedly inhibit the adhesion of bacterial on TFC membrane surface, the water flux only decreased by only 35.6% relative to the initial water flux, thus effectively mitigating biofouling of TFC membranes. This work provides a new pathway for better understanding and control of biofouling in the design and application of TFC PA membranes.

Thin film composite (TFC) membranes with advanced antibacterial and separation performance are essential for practical application. Adding additional antibacterial agents is always needed to improve the antibacterial ability of TFC membrane, and it may decline the separation performance of this membrane. Herein, naringin (NG), as a green and renewable flavonoid molecule, possesses bacteriostatic and abundant reactive hydroxyl groups. Thus, a novel TFC [NG/trimesoyl chloride (TMC)] membrane with intrinsically antibacterial ability was constructed using NG as the aqueous phase molecule via facile interfacial polymerization with TMC. The NG/TMC membrane demonstrated low roughness and high negative charge surface, and the retention rates to Evan’s blue, Congo red, Sunset yellow, and methyl orange were all above 99.0%. Meanwhile, the NG/TMC membrane exhibited an outstanding antibacterial ability, the antibacterial rate to E. coli and S. aureus can reach 99.36% and 98.39%, respectively. This kind of novel NG/TMC membrane with inherent antibacterial ability has significant advantages in practical applications.

A novel poly(amide-urethane@imide) reverse osmosis (RO) composite membrane with chlorine-tolerant property was prepared on a polysulfone supporting film through two-step interfacial polymerization. The crosslinking agent – 5-choroformyloxyisophaloyl chloride (CFIC) was first reacted with 4-methyl-phenylenediamine (MMPD) via interfacial polymerization to get the nascent poly(amide-urethane) base membrane (CFIC–MMPD) without curing treatment. Then the resultant base membrane contacted again with the second aqueous solution containing functional secondary amine – N,N′-dimethyl- m -phenylenediamine (DMMPD) to obtain the poly(amide-urethane@imide) TFC RO membrane (MMPD–CFIC@CFIC–DMMPD). X-ray photoelectronic spectroscopy (XPS) was combined with attenuated total reflectance infrared (ATR-IR) to verify that the ultrathin polyimide film (CFIC–DMMPD) has been successfully grafted on the surface of the MMPD–CFIC base membrane. The images of scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM) showed that the poly(amide-urethane@imide) membrane has much smoother, more hydrophilic surface than the poly(amide/imide-urethane) membrane (MMPD/DMMPD–CFIC) prepared by conventional one-step interfacial polymerization of CFIC and composite MMPD/DMMPD. However, the permeation experiment revealed that the poly(amide-urethane@imide) membrane has a slight loss in both salt rejection and water flux than the poly(amide/imide-urethane) membrane and conventional commercialized polyamide membrane (MPD–TMC), but exhibits better chlorine-tolerant property due to the introduction of ultrathin polyimide film (CFIC–DMMPD) on the outmost surface of the TFC RO membrane, and the combination of IR and XPS analyses shows a good agreement with the chlorine exposure results of membranes.

Novel polyvinylidene fluoride-calcium alginate (PVDF-CaAlg) nanofiltration (NF) membranes were prepared by impregnating electrospun PVDF substrates with sodium alginate solution and crosslinking with CaCl 2 solution. The NF membranes were characterized via field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) equipped with an energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS), attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectra (ATR-FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results show that the prepared PVDF-CaAlg NF membranes exhibit dual thin-film-composite (TFC) structure and superior surface hydrophilicity. The highest pure water flux can achieve 63.8 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 accompanied with a 98.5% rejection rate for methyl blue (MB), which is superior to many polymeric NF membranes. The prepared PVDF-CaAlg NF membranes exhibit much higher rejections for seven typical dyes, and the rejection slightly rises with the increase of impregnating time. In the long-term filtration process, the permeation flux for dye solution remains stable. PVDF-CaAlg NF membranes show good anti-fouling performance to BSA protein and lactobacillus.

Our current study experimentally evaluates the impacts of surface hydrophilicity of supports on the properties of polyamide (PA) thin-film composite (TFC) nanofiltration (NF) membranes. A series of “carboxylated polyethersulfone” (CPES) copolymers with an increasing “molar ratio” (MR) of carboxyl units were used to prepare supports with diverse surface hydrophilicities by the classical nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) method. Then, the PA-TFC NF membranes were finely fabricated atop these supports by conventional interfacial polymerization (IP) reactions. The linkages between the surface hydrophilicity of the supports and the characteristics of the interfacially polymerized PA layers as well as the permselectivity of NF membranes were investigated systematically. The morphological details of the NF membranes indicate that the growth of PA layers can be adjusted through increasing the surface hydrophilicity of the supports. Moreover, the separation results reveal that the NF membrane fabricated on the relatively hydrophobic support exhibits lower permeability (7.04 L·m−2·h−1·bar−1) and higher selectivity (89.94%) than those of the ones prepared on the hydrophilic supports (14.64~18.99 L·m−2·h−1·bar−1and 66.98~73.48%). A three-stage conceptual scenario is proposed to illustrate the formation mechanism of the PA layer in NF membranes, which is due to the variation of surface hydrophilicity of the supports. The overall findings specify how the surface hydrophilicity of the supports influences the formation of PA layers, which ultimately defines the separation performances of the corresponding NF membranes. Keywords:carboxylated PES copolymer;support effect;interfacial polymerization;selective PA layer;TFC nanofiltration membrane
