Filter paper loaded with Ag nanocubes serves as a SERS platform for detecting thiram in fruit

Tao Wang,Shuang Zhang,Dongling Wu,Maohua Li,Yalan He,Yunpeng Shen

The polyol reduction method has performed well in Ag nanocube (AgNC) synthesis but is hindered by high-temperature requirements, impacting environmental sustainability and economy. Using polyethylene glycol (PEG)/deionized water as a solvent mitigates these issues, by leveraging PEG’s high solubility, bio-compatibility, low cost, and redox properties. The synthesis conditions were optimized, resulting in relatively uniform AgNC. The synthetic AgNC were loaded on porous, cheap, flexible and biocompatible filter paper (FP) by a simple self-assembly, and the formed flexible substrate (AgNC@FP) was used for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection. The AgNC@FP substrate had a high enhancement factor (EF) of 9.8 × 10 7 , with a detection limit of Rhodamine 6G (R6G) of 5.2 × 10 -12 M. Meanwhile, the substrate showed good reproducibility and stability, with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 5.9 % and a decrease in Raman signal strength of only 25 % after 30 days. Furthermore, the direct sampling of apples and pears from their surface thereby enables the rapid identification of ultra-low thiram residue concentrations, with a sensitivity of 8.3 × 10 -7 M. The high SERS enhancement factor and sensitivity were attributed to the result of the high hot spot density generated by the FP surface, excellent uniformity and superior sample collection efficiency. It can therefore be concluded that this flexible AgNC@FP substrate, which is manufactured at a low cost and allows for label-free SERS detection, represents a promising SERS platform for analytical and biosensing applications.

Carbon dots-based stimuli-responsive hydrogel for in-situ detection of thiram on fruits and vegetables

Hongxia Li,Yanan Hu,Zhen Lin,Xu Yan,Chunyan Sun,Dong Yao

Stimuli-responsive hydrogel possesses a strong loading capacity to embed luminescent indicators for constructing food safety sensors, which are suitable for field application. In this work, a fluorescent hydrogel sensor was fabricated by incorporating Ag + -modified carbon dots (CDs-Ag + ) into a sodium alginate (SA) hydrogel for in-situ detection of thiram. The fluorescence of CDs was quenched due to the combined effects of electrostatic adsorption and electron transfer between Ag + and CDs. The formation of an Ag S bond between thiram and Ag + facilitates the release of CDs, causing subsequently fluorescence recovery. Combined with smartphone and analysis software, the fluorescence color change of the hydrogel sensor was converted into data information for quantitative detection of thiram. Such a sample-to-result step is completed within 10 min. Notably, the in-situ detection experiment of thiram in fruit and vegetable samples confirmed the practical application of the hydrogel sensor. Therefore, the hydrogel sensor provides a new research direction for the in-situ detection of pesticide residues in the monitoring of food safety.

Detection of thiram residues on apple surface by surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy with modified paper substrate

Lexiao Cai,Mingyue Li,Jiajun Zan,Haihang Wang,Tong Sun

Thiram, an organophosphate pesticide, poses a health risk due to excessive residues in agricultural products. Rapid on-site detection is essential for minimizing these risks. This study uses a modified filter paper substrate coated with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) for fast detection of thiram via surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). The filter paper is modified with chloride ions to enhance AgNPs adsorption. The substrate's signal uniformity and stability were also assessed. Density functional theory (DFT) was employed to optimize thiram's molecular structure and calculate its Raman spectrum. In-situ extraction and detection of pesticide residues from apple surfaces were also explored. Results show the substrate offers excellent signal consistency and stability. A high correlation (R 2  = 0.99) between theoretical and experimental Raman spectra was achieved, with a detection limit (LOD) as low as 10 −8 , highlighting the substrate's potential for detecting food contamination, environmental pollutants, and biomolecules.

One-step preparation of TiO2/PPy composite photoelectrochemical sensors and sensitive detection of TBZ and thiram

Hanzhaobing Wu,Jin Xu,Hongping Zhao,Baolong Shi,Yu Wan,Hao Sun,Dalei Wang,Changwei Bi,Chao Wang,Wei Liu

Thiabendazole (TBZ) and thiram are widely used fungicides in agricultural production for effective disease control. However, their persistent environmental accumulation and migration lead to excessive residues in soil, groundwater, and other matrices, causing severe contamination and significant human health risks. In this study, TiO₂/PPy (polypyrrole) composites were synthesized via an eco-friendly chemical method to develop a photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing platform for TBZ and thiram detection. The conductive PPy incorporation significantly enhanced TiO₂'s charge separation efficiency, yielding a notable photocurrent response (∼6 μA/cm²). The fabricated PEC sensor demonstrated reliable detection performance for both fungicides.

A core–shell structured AuNPs@ZnCo-MOF SERS substrate for sensitive and selective detection of thiram

Wenxia Xue,Jihong Fu,Yaxue Zhang,Shuxian Ren,Guoqi Liu

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) enables pesticide residue monitoring to become facile and efficient. In this study, a core–shell structured gold nanoparticles@ZnCo metal–organic framework (AuNPs@ZnCo-MOF) SERS substrate was designed and successfully synthesized for efficient and selective detection of thiram. The bimetallic ZnCo-MOF shell can not only enrich the targeted molecules in the electromagnetic field because of its excellent absorptive capacity, but also act as a stabilized matrix for protecting the AuNPs from aggregation. The AuNPs@ZnCo-MOFs exhibited a high enhancement factor (EF) of 3.51 × 106 and a low detection limit of 1 × 10−7 mol L−1. Besides, the substrate material showed exceptional stability for up to 28 days at room temperature. The AuNPs@ZnCo-MOFs were used to detect thiram which displayed wide linearity (1 × 10−7 to 1 × 10−4 mol L−1) and high recoveries (83.45–99.61%). Moreover, the AuNPs@ZnCo-MOF SERS substrate exhibited excellent anti-interference ability and size selectivity for the target molecules. These indicate that the AuNPs@ZnCo-MOF substrate has great potential for the detection of thiram residues in practical applications.

Au–Ag Nanoparticles with Controllable Morphologies for the Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Detection of Trace Thiram

Li Sun,Chunlai Cao,Yuan Zhi,Yuejin Shan,Hua Zhang,Binlin Dou,Lixin Zhang,Weijia Huang

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technique has been limitedly applied to the detection of trace thiram due to the weak activity of employed substrates. In this work, Au–Ag nanoparticles (NPs) with controllable morphologies are synthesized and used as SERS-active substrates for the detection of trace thiram. Porous–spiny Au–Ag NPs are synthesized with spherical Ag NPs as intermediates through in situ redox. Annular Au–Ag NPs can be further obtained by heating porous–spiny Au–Ag NPs. Here, the morphology transformation of Au–Ag NPs is first completed by means of the element diffusion theory, providing a strategy for the morphology control of complex Au–Ag NPs. Additionally, these Au–Ag NPs with optimized morphologies were chosen as substrates for the successful SERS detection of trace thiram. Especially, porous–spiny Au–Ag NPs show superior sensitivity and reproducibility. Meanwhile, using porous–spiny Au–Ag NPs as SERS-active substrates, thiram can be quantitatively detected in the range from 10–3 to 10–11 M. Thus, it is inferred that Au–Ag NPs with optimized morphologies will have great potential in the field of trace analyte detection related to food safety and environmental protection.

HPTLC + SRES screening of pesticide for point-of-care application as shown with thiram in juice

Zhijian Wang,Lixin Zhang,Yisheng Chen

In this study, a HPTLC-platformed SERS detection was established for screening thiram in juice. After a simple extraction, the sample liquid was separated on HPTLC plates, which resulted in a specific zone for the analyte. Following infiltration with atomize water, the band of interest was easily scraped off and eluted. In parallel, a flexible and SERS-active substrate was fabricated by the in-situ synthesis of gold nanoparticles within cotton fabrics. Under optimized conditions, fingerprint-like signal at 1376 cm −1 of the analyte were easily recorded by a hand-held Raman spectrometer with enough LOD (0.5 mg/L), LOQ (0.9 mg/L) and reproducibility (<11.7%). The optimized screening system was further validated with pear, apple and mango juice by determining the spike-and-recovery rates (75.6 to 112.8%). It was demonstrated that this method could be a facile point-of-care testing system tailored for pesticide screening.

Core-satellite nanocomposites via PEI-induced self-assembly for enhanced SERS sensing of thiram and ciprofloxacin

Jiafeng He,Jumei Li

Developing sensitive, reliable, and robust surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates relies heavily on fabricating a substantial number of hot spots. In this study, we present a straightforward method for creating Ag@PEI/Ag core-satellite nanocomposites. Large Ag nanospheres serve as the cores, and smaller Ag nanoparticles are electrostatically assembled around them through the introduction of polyethyleneimine (PEI). This assembly process generates numerous hot spots not only between two Ag satellites but also between the inner Ag core and Ag satellites, thanks to the sub-nm PEI interlayer. The nanocomposites exhibit great potential for SERS analysis, enabling effective sensing of various organic pollutants, such as thiram and ciprofloxacin, using a portable Raman spectrometer. Notably, these nanocomposites obtain an exceptional detection limit of as low as 10 −8 M for them, which falls below the safety level set by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. Additionally, the substrates demonstrate excellent uniformity, reproducibility and storing stability. Consequently, the Ag@PEI/Ag core-satellite nanocomposites hold great promise as efficient SERS platforms for reliable and highly sensitive monitoring of food safety and environmental analysis.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering sensor of MoS2/Au@Ag film to detect the thiram residues in citrus

Cunwei Wang,Man Peng,Xishun Peng,Haili Zhang,Caizhen Zu,Zhangwei Tan,Yuxue He,Zhongchen Bai

This study presents a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensing platform based on a MoS 2 /Au@Ag heterojunction for specifically detecting the residues of thiram pesticide. A Nano-MoS 2 film was firstly prepared by depositing MoS 2 nanosheets on the surface of a stainless steel sheet. Subsequently, Au nanoparticles and Ag nanoparticles were deposited on the surface of MoS 2 film to form a MoS 2 /Au@Ag heterojunction for SERS application. This well-performing SERS substrate was originated from the synergistic effect of electromagnetic (EM) enhancement and chemical (CM) enhancement to boost its SERS signal. Here, the CM contribution could be up to 41.8 % in the process of optimizing interfacial charge transfer (CT) pathways in MoS 2 /Au@Ag heterojunction. Thus, the SERS sensor based on MoS 2 /Au@Ag film showed an excellent signal homogeneity (RSD = 4.36 %) and an ultrahigh sensitivity to thiram molecules with a limit of detection (LOD) as low as 0.32 nM. Moreover, it could also recognize the thiram residues at 10 nM level in citrus peels, with a recovery rate of 91.0–109.0 %. The SERS sensor we developed in this study has a high sensitivity, excellent reproducibility, and long-term stability, which could be widely applied for the food safety monitoring

Antagonistic action regulated anti-etching colorimetric detection of thiram residue in soil based on triangular silver nanoplates

Chunhong Zhang,Xiangkui Jiang,Fuhua Yu,Yang Liu,Qi Yue,Peng Yang,Yongchun Liu

The noble metal nanoparticles-based colorimetric detection can simply determine the concentration of the substances by naked eyes, but difficultly resolve the conflict between sensitivity and anti-interference ability. Herein, a triangular silver nanoplates (TSNPs)-based anti-etching colorimetric detection method for analyzing thiram was proposed by regulating the antagonistic action between the protection of thiram and the etching of I − on TSNPs . The internal mechanism of etching induced peak shift of TSNPs was revealed by the discrete dipole approximation method. The effect of thiram and I − on the color of TSNPs was systematically studied. As a consequence, this method not only shows a limit of detection of 19.7 nM in the linear range of 0.025−0.35 μM by absorption spectroscopy, but also produces sensitive color changes for the detection by naked eyes. Especially, it shows good selectivity that can resist the interference of other substances including other pesticides and halide ions in the specimens. It also shows excellent applicability in the detection of thiram residues in soil. This work provides a potential device-free strategy for the application of colorimetric detection in specimens with lots of interfering substances.

A polymer-integrated flexible gold nanotriangle array for quantitative and nondestructive SERS detection of thiram on apples

Ze-Bo Zheng,Xiao-Hui Sun,Wan-Hui Guo,Wen Pan,Fan-Li Zhang,Sheng-Hong Liu

To enable rapid in situ detection of pesticide residues on foods with non-planar surfaces, a polymer-integrated flexible surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate was constructed and demonstrated using apples as a model. An ordered gold nanotriangle (AuNT) array was integrated onto a biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film to provide conformal interfacial adaptation, while a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) overlayer was introduced as a protective barrier to suppress environmental degradation and maintain hotspot integrity during storage and deformation. The densely packed AuNTs generated strong electromagnetic enhancement, yielding an analytical enhancement factor of 3.72 × 108 with good signal uniformity (RSD < 7%). More than 90% of the initial SERS activity was retained after 30 days, and over 80% was maintained under repeated mechanical deformation. The flexible substrate enabled direct and nondestructive detection of thiram on apple surfaces, achieving a limit of detection of 0.074 µg L−1 and a linear range spanning four orders of magnitude (R2 = 0.9865). Recoveries of 89.5–103.1% were obtained in spiked samples. These results indicate that the polymer-integrated flexible SERS platform provides a mechanically robust and storage-stable approach for practical analysis of contaminants on irregular food surfaces.

Thiram/hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin inclusion complex electrospun nanofibers for a fast dissolving water-based drug delivery system

Shuang Gao,Yanyan Liu,Jingyu Jiang,Xiaoming Li,Fei Ye,Ying Fu,Lixia Zhao

The electrospinning of thiram/hydroxypropyl- β -cyclodextrin inclusion complex nanofiber (thiram/HP β CD-IC-NF) was produced for establishing a quick dissolving water-based drug delivery system. As a dithiocarbamate broad-spectrum fungicide, thiram is insoluble in water. High-concentration HP β CD solutions (180 %, w/v) were applied in thiram/HP β CD systems to implement electrospinning with no extra polymer matrix added. The formation of thiram/HP β CD-IC-NF was identified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction as well as nuclear magnetic resonance. Phase solubility study proved HP β CD played a huge role in the improvement in solubility of thiram, and thiram/HP β CD-IC-NF showed an excellent dissolution rate. Scanning electron microscopy was used to examine the configuration of surface of thiram/HP β CD-IC-NF, which exhibited that thiram/HP β CD-IC-NF was uniform and beadless. In addition, thiram/HP β CD-IC-NF exhibited better antifungal activity and thermal stability than pure thiram. In summary, thiram/HP β CD-IC-NF drug delivery system contributed to water solubility, thermal stability and antifungal activity of thiram. It could provide a new idea for the development of new formulations of rapidly dissolving green pesticides, and made efforts to promote the sustainable development of agriculture.
