Synthesis of nano-sized TiC powders by designing chemical vapor deposition system in a fluidized bed reactor

Miao Song,Yafeng Yang,Maoqiao Xiang,Qingshan Zhu,Hongdan Zhao

Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process is an effective way to fabricate highly pure ultra-fine powders; however commercial fabrication of high quality TiC powders through conventional CVD (TiCl 4 –H 2 –CH 4 ) system remains a great challenge. The main obstacle is that the conversion of chemically stable TiCl 4 to TiC is too low (theoretically 13.3% at 1000 °C) to provide sufficient supersaturation to form powders but only coating. To tackle this problem, relatively unstable TiCl 3 was proposed as a novel precursor, which is easier to achieve homogeneous nucleation due to the higher conversion of TiCl 3 to TiC in the TiCl 3 –CH 4 –H 2 system (theoretically 37.7% at 1000 °C). In addition, a fluidized bed reactor (FBR) with fluidized TiC seeds providing local turbulence was employed to boost the homogeneous nucleation. Based on the novel idea, for the first time, high purity nano-sized TiC powders (about 77.1 nm, purity 99.46 at.%) were successfully fabricated by a fluidized bed chemical vapor deposition (FBCVD) process. More importantly, an advanced simple and effective process was successfully developed to activate the common TiCl 4 raw material to synthesize nano-sized TiC powders by designing the reactor.

CNTs/Cu-Ti composites fabrication through the synergistic reinforcement of CNTs and in situ generated nano-TiC particles

Ni Xiong,Rui Bao,Jianhong Yi,Dong Fang,Jingmei Tao,Yichun Liu

CNTs/Cu-Ti composites were fabricated successfully by spray pyrolysis , low energy ball milling and subsequent hot pressing (HP). Microstructure and mechanical properties of the composites were characterized by SEM, EDS, HRTEM , XRD, hardness and tensile tests. The results reveal that in situ generated nano-TiC particles, as a transition phase from CNTs to Cu-Ti matrix, which played a “rivet” role in enhancing the interfacial bonding between the CNTs and Cu-Ti matrix is formed in the composites. Consequently, mechanical properties of the CNTs/Cu-Ti composites are enhanced compared with alloy matrix, and an optimal balance between elevated ultimate tensile strength and impressively larger plastic deformation is achieved by adding 0.4 wt% CNTs in the composites. (ultimate tensile strength (UTS) 352 MPa, elongation 28.2%, the UTS is 39% higher than that of the Cu-Ti alloy, and the ductility increased significantly by 62%.) Finally, strengthening and toughening mechanisms are discussed. This study provides new insights into the interface structure and strength-ductility in metal-matrix composites.

In situ formation of D022-Al3Ti during selective laser melting of nano-TiC/AlSi10Mg alloy prepared by electrostatic self-assembly

Zhenhua Fan,Xingchen Yan,Zhiyong Fu,Ben Niu,Junfu Chen,Yongjun Hu,Cheng Chang,Jianglong Yi

In this present work, a novel electrostatic self-assembly method was invented to produce AlSi10Mg powders homogeneously decorated with TiC nanoparticles . The TiC/AlSi10Mg alloy with homogenous, crack-free, equiaxed and super fine-grained were produced using selective laser melting (SLM). The in-situ formation of D0 22 -Al 3 Ti created by TiC and Al matrix during SLM was revealed at the first time and both TiC and D0 22 -Al 3 Ti nanoparticles were extremely effective inoculant for an SLMed AlSi10Mg alloy. Therefore, the SLMed TiC/AlSi10Mg alloy exhibited a high tensile strength (ultimate tensile strength ~ 456 MPa, yield strength ~338 MPa) and high microhardness (131 HV 0.05 ), which were higher than the SLMed AlSi10Mg alloy (ultimate tensile strength ~437 MPa, yield strength ~254 MPa and microhardness ~113 HV 0.05 ). This study can be regarded as a guidance in the fabrication of metal matrix nanocomposites using for SLM.

Preparation of an ultra-long-life porous bilayer Ti/Sb-SnO2 electrode modified by nano-TiC for degradation of phenol

Qiang Bi,Yifei Sun,Bo Yang,Yilin Zhao,Zekun Zhang,Juanqin Xue

Electrochemical advanced oxidation technology produces hydroxyl radicals and has no secondary pollution, making it one of the most promising technologies for treating organic pollutants in industrial wastewater. Nevertheless, low energy efficiency and short lifetime are the key issues hindering the widespread application of electrodes. In this study, TiC nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed in the deposition solution, and the Ti/Sb-SnO 2 electrode was prepared by sol electrodeposition , after calcination , a porous double-layer structure was formed, which improved the catalytic performance and effectively delayed the penetration of industrial wastewater into the electrode. Compared with the Ti/Sb-SnO 2 electrode, the electrode life is increased by nearly 6 times, the phenol removal rate reaches 90.64 % (2000 mA/cm 2 , 1 mol/L H 2 SO 4 ), the oxygen evolution potential of 2.13 V, a current density of 0.096 A/cm 2 , a charge transfer resistance of 2.245 Ω. The results show that the porous structure is conducive to providing a larger specific surface area and contact area for the reaction, maximizing the utilization of catalytic active sites, shortens the mass transfer distance between the hydroxyl radicals and pollutants, increases the degradation rate, reduces the corrosion rate of the electrode materials, and improves electrode stability. The unique double-layer structure is obviously different from traditional electrodes, adding a layer of protective barrier, which provides a new idea for prolonging the life of electrodes. The electrode prepared in this study has a simple process, a greatly improved lifespan and an excellent energy utilization rate, which is suitable for industrial application.

Construction of an in-situ TiC and (TiZr)5Si3 dual-scale network hierarchical structure in titanium matrix composites and its effect on mechanical properties

Qiang Wang,Zhao-Hui Zhang,Xiao-Tong Jia,Yang-Yu He,Jin-Zhao Zhou,Yuan-Hao Sun,Xing-Wang Cheng

In this study, the pyrolysis products of polycarbosilane were used as sources of carbon and silicon to synthesize (TiZr) 5 Si 3 and TiC reinforcements, enhancing the performance of titanium matrix composites. By controlling the particle scale of the matrix alloy powders, the scale of the reinforcement network structure was successfully manipulated. The microstructural features and mechanical behavior of the (TiC+(TiZr) 5 Si 3 )/TA15 composite were systematically examined. The findings show that the (TiZr) 5 Si 3 and TiC reinforcements create a multi-scale hierarchical network structure within the composite, effectively inhibiting β grains coarsening. The TiC particles have an average size of approximately 3.1 μm, while the (TiZr) 5 Si 3 particles are around 95 nm in size. Relative to pure TA15 alloy, the β grains were refined from 474.7 μm to 40.6 μm. Moreover, the strength of the composite decreased as the network structure size increased, with the maximum yield strength reaching 1423 MPa, a 47.3 % improvement over the TA15 matrix. Meanwhile, the maximum hardness reaches 402.1 HV, corresponding to a 15.8 % increase compared to the TA15 matrix. This improvement primarily results from the refined grains and the uniform dispersion of reinforcements, while the composite’s plasticity remained nearly unaffected by the network structure dimensions.

Synthesis of nanostructured TiC/TiO2 with controllable morphology on carbon fibers as photocatalyst for degrading RhB and reducing Cr(VI) under visible light

Lv Bo,Xia Lihong,Yang Yu,Wang Xiaoming,Yin Chen,Li Yaoping,Zhang Fuqin

Carbon fibers (CFs) and TiH 2 were used as raw materials to grow TiC on the surface of CFs in a molten salt system. After hydrothermal reaction with sodium hydroxide, part of TiC was converted into sodium titanate. The sodium ions were substituted by H + by the hydrochloric acid solution treatment. CFs@TiC/TiO 2 composite was generated after high-temperature treatment. XRD, Raman, XPS, SEM, and AFM were used to characterize the structure and morphology of the composites. Results showed that a porous TiC film layer was homogeneously formed which was evenly wrapped on the surface of CFs. Through hydrothermal, displacement, and calcination processes, part of TiC was transformed into anatase TiO 2 with controllable morphology. Photocatalytic degradation experiments by the composite catalysts were carried out. The chemical reactions involved in the formation of composite structures and their effects on photocatalysis were analyzed and discussed. Notably, the morphology characteristics of the heterogeneous structure has a marked impact on the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants and photocatalytic reduction of hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)]. Furthermore, the composites can be easily recycled and reused with good reactivity.

Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of TiC-Reinforced Al–Mg–Sc–Zr Composites Additively Manufactured by Laser Direct Energy Deposition

Xu Rong,Li Ruidi,Yuan Tiechui,Zhu Hongbin,Li Ping

In order to refine the microstructure and improve the performance of direct energy deposited (DED) additively manufactured Al–Mg–Sc–Zr alloy, TiC-modified Al–Mg–Sc–Zr composites were prepared by DED and the effect of TiC content on the microstructure and performance was studied. In the absence of TiC particle, the microstructure of Al–Mg–Sc–Zr alloy prepared by DED consisted of fine grains with average size of 8.36 μm, and well-dispersed nano-Al 3 (Sc,Zr) particles inside the grains and Mg 2 Si phase along the grain boundaries. With the addition of 1 wt% TiC, the microstructure of TiC/Al–Mg–Sc–Zr prepared by DED became finer apparently compared with that without TiC; while the further increase of TiC content to 3 wt%, the microstructure of TiC/Al–Mg–Sc–Zr prepared by DED became coarser with appearance of a new kind of needle-like (Ti,Zr) 5 Si 3 phase. Also, the addition of TiC decreased the porosity of Al–Mg–Sc–Zr prepared by DED. Simultaneously, after the addition of TiC, the tensile strength increased from 283.25 MPa to 344.98–361.51 MPa, and the elongation increased from 3.61% to 9.58–14.10%. The potential mechanism of the microstructure evolution and strength improvement was discussed. This research will provide new insights into the available metal matrix composites by laser additive manufacturing (LAM).

Pd/TiC/Ti electrode with enhanced atomic H* generation, atomic H* adsorption and 2,4-DCBA adsorption for facilitating electrocatalytic hydrodechlorination

Zimo Lou,Zheni Wang,Jiasheng Zhou,Chuchen Zhou,Jiang Xu,Xinhua Xu

Electrocatalytic hydrodechlorination (ECH) has been proposed as a potential technology for the effective degradation of organochlorine contaminants. In this study, a nanoscale Pd/TiC catalyst with low resistance was dip-coated onto Ti, aiming to fabricate a stable Pd/TiC/Ti electrode with enhanced ECH reactivity for efficient dechlorination. Electrochemical techniques indicated that the Pd/TiC/Ti electrode had a larger electrochemically active surface area and more rapid interfacial charge transfer than the conventional Pd/C/Ti electrode. In a batch experiment, the dechlorination rate for ECH of 2,4-dichlorobenzoic acid (2,4-DCBA, a model pollutant) by Pd/TiC/Ti was 1.3–14.5 times higher than those by Pd/C/Ti, Pd/MWCNTs/Ti, and Pd/MoS2/Ti, respectively. Scavenger experiments, ESR spin-trapping spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry clarified the intensified atomic H* generation by Pd/TiC/Ti. DFT calculations revealed that Pd/TiC/Ti had stronger binding ability with atomic H* (Eads: −2.89 eV vs. −2.44 eV) and 2,4-DCBA (Eads: −3.62 eV vs. −2.15 eV), respectively, when compared with Pd/C/Ti. As a result, enhanced generation of atomic H*, together with strengthened adsorption of atomic H* and 2,4-DCBA, would contribute to a faster ECH reaction. The Pd/TiC/Ti electrode retained its reactivity after 10 successive batch experiments (80 h), and showed high tolerance to the constituents in actual water matrices including lake water and river water. This study proposed a promising ECH electrode for the treatment of chlorinated organics in water matrices.

In Situ Synthesis and Tribological Characterization of TiC–Diamond Composites: Effect of the Counterface Material on Wear Rate and Mechanism

Yuqi Chen,Jin Li,Liang Li,Ming Han,Junbao He

TiC bonded diamond composites were prepared from a mixture of Ti, graphite, and diamond powders as raw materials, with Si as sintering additives, through high-temperature and high-pressure (HTHP) technology. The reaction between Ti and graphite under 4.5–5 GPa pressure and 1.7–2.3 kW output power can produce TiC as the main phase. The diamond particles are surrounded by TiC, and the interface is firmly bonded. The coefficient of friction (COF) of TiC–diamond composites with POM and PP balls decreases with increasing load for a specific friction velocity. However, the COF of TiC–diamond composites with agate, Cu and Al balls increases with the rising load because of the enhanced adhesive wear effect. The COF of PP, Cu and Al balls slightly increases with the increase in friction velocity at a certain load. SEM results show that the surface of agate balls has rough, pear-shaped grooves and shallow scratches. The scratches on the surface of POM balls are wrinkled. The PP balls have pear-shaped groove scratches on their wear surfaces. The wear mechanism of TiC–diamond composites with Cu ball pairs is primarily adhesive wear. The abrasion of TiC–diamond composites with Cu ball pairs remains almost unchanged as the load increases. However, the depth and width of the pear-shaped grooves on the wear surface of TiC–diamond composites are significantly increased. This phenomenon may be attributed to the high rotational speed, which helps to remove the residual abrasive debris from the friction grooves. As a result, there is a decrease in both the depth and width of the pear-shaped grooves, leading to a smoother overall surface. The wear mechanism of TiC–diamond composites with Al ball pairs is abrasive wear, which increases with an increasing load. When the load is constant, as the speed increases, the wear morphology of TiC–diamond composites with Al ball pairs transitions from rough to smooth and then back to rough again. This phenomenon may be attributed to the wear mechanism at low speeds being groove wear and adhesive wear. As the speed increases, the wear particles are more easily removed from the wear track, leading to a reduction in abrasiveness. As the speed increases, the wear surface becomes roughened by a combination of grooves and dispersed wear debris. This can be attributed to the increased dynamic interaction between surfaces caused by higher speed, resulting in a combination of abrasive and adhesive wear. In addition, Cu and Al ball wear debris appeared as irregular particles that permeated and adhered to the surface of the TiC phase among the diamond particles. The results suggest that TiC–diamond composites are a very promising friction material.

Two-step preparation of Ni-B/TiC combined with myristate superhydrophobic coating and corrosion resistance study

Qing Yuan,Yi He,Yi Sun,Xiangshan Hou,Shijun Xu,Han Liu,Kaijun Wei,Xingtao Cheng,Quangang Chen,Yi Fan

In this study, a two-phase superhydrophobic nanocomposite coating was prepared by combining electroless deposition and electrodeposition methods. Firstly, the Ni-B /TiC coating were prepared on the metal surface by electroless deposition. Then, the low surface energy cerium myristic acid coatings (Ce [CH 3 (CH 2 ) 12 COO] 3 ) were further prepared on the coating surface by electrodeposition. The test results showed that the two-phase composite coating with Ce [CH 3 (CH 2 ) 12 COO] 3 deposited on the Ni-B/TiC coating (Ni-B/TiC@MACe) had excellent nonwetting properties (water contact angle of 160.1° and rolling angle of 4.3°) and self-cleaning properties. The coating exhibited excellent stability and durability, retaining its superhydrophobicity even after 12 months of exposure to air. Notably, this performance was less affected by pH fluctuations. In addition, mechanical robustness was verified by 50 tape stripping cycles in which the superhydrophobic surface maintained a water contact angle of over 150°. The test results of corrosion resistance showed that the Ni-B/TiC@MACe coating has excellent corrosion resistance with a corrosion inhibition rate of 99.95 %, and the impedance modulus was three orders of magnitude higher than that of the Ni-B coating. In addition, the coating provided protection under simulated acidic conditions with a corrosion potential of - 0.27 V. In a long-term immersion test, the coating impedance modulus remained at 10 6 after seven days of immersion, which effectively protected the underlying metal from corrosion-induced damage. Therefore, the superhydrophobic coating in this study is expected to provide new ideas for the design of new anti-corrosion coatings.

TiC nanoparticles supported on free-standing carbon nanofibers enabled high-performance Lithium–Sulfur batteries

Zheng Li,Congyu Qi,Qiang Chang,Jun Jin,Yan Lu,Zhaoyin Wen

Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries hold great promise for substituting current energy-storage technologies owing to their exceptional advantage in energy density . The main challenge in developing practical Li–S batteries is the lack of efficient sulfur host which can simultaneously suppress the shuttle effect and improve the redox kinetics. Polar host materials manifest chemisorptive properties for localizing the mobile polysulfide intermediates, being promising in inhibiting the shuttle effect; however, their poor intrinsic conductivity hinders their role in enhancing the redox kinetics of subsequent conversion reactions. In this regard, a conductive polar host material is highly desirable for efficient and long-life Li–S batteries. Herein, we design and develop a free-standing sulfur host consisted of carbon nanofibers decorated with titanium carbides nanoparticles (TiC/CNFs) for high performance Li–S batteries. Benefiting from the intrinsic chemical polarity and high electric conductivity of TiC, the chemisorption and conversion kinetics of lithium polysulfides are simultaneously promoted, leading to the greatly enhanced battery performance. For example, the S@TiC/CNFs composite cathode retains a high capacity of 672 mA h g −1 after 1000 cycles and an excellent rate performance of 938 mA h g −1 at 5 C. Impressively, even at a super high sulfur loading of 7 mg cm −2 , the TiC/CNFs can retain a capacity of 5 mA h (630 mA h g −1 ) after 100 cycles, highlighting the advantages of the polar conductive sulfur host design for efficient conversion of lithium polysulfides.

Preparation and investigation of mechanical and electromagnetic wave absorption properties of TiC–TiB2/Si3N4 composites

Shaoyin Wang,Jianqiang Bi,Guandong Liang,Linjing Qiao,Yao Yang,Hongyi Wang,Shuyong Liang,Jiacheng Rong,Chengjiao Che,Jilie Yuan,Yueguang Chen

The aim of achieving integration of lightweight, high strength, high-temperature resistant, and satisfactory electromagnetic (EM) wave absorption was successfully accomplished in the present study by synthesizing TiC–TiB 2 fibers reinforced Si 3 N 4 composites, which were pressureless sintered at 1650°C for 2 h. The preparation of TiC–TiB 2 fibers was conducted through a chloride-assisted carbothermic method. This work focused on investigating the effects of incorporating TiC–TiB 2 fibers on the mechanical properties and EM wave absorption characteristics of the composites. The 30 wt% TiC–TiB 2 /Si 3 N 4 composite displayed the bulk density of 1.89 g/cm 3 , bending strength of 93.11 ± 3.91 MPa, fracture toughness of 1.81 ± 0.10 MPa m 1/2 , minimum reflection loss of −38.87 dB, and effective absorption bandwidth of 1.43 GHz in the K u -band, respectively. The as-synthesized TiC–TiB 2 /Si 3 N 4 composites are promising candidates for EM wave absorbing load-bearing materials due to their outstanding mechanical properties and microwave absorption properties.
