Mechanistic insights into enrofloxacin degradation via Ti3+-engineered TiO2/g-C3N4 heterojunction photoanodes

Zipeng Zou,Fangyuan Wang,Siyu Yang,Lu Wu,Yanhong Tu,Jiahao Dai,Jiping Su,Hongpeng Huang,Xiaohui Luo,Jianping Qiu,Yi Mao

To address the escalating antibiotic contamination in aquatic environments, this study developed Ti 3+ self-doped TiO 2 nanotube arrays/g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction photoanodes (TiO 2-x NTAs/g-C 3 N 4 ) via an integrated in situ synthesis strategy combining electrochemical oxidation, reduction, and chemical vapor deposition. Comprehensive characterization verified g-C 3 N 4 being uniformed dispersed on TiO 2 nanotube surfaces, with Ti 3+ doping significantly improving charge carrier separation efficiency. The photoelectrocatalytic system, utilizing the composite material and platinum as the photoanode and the cathode, respectively, achieved outstanding performance in the degradation of enrofloxacin (ENR). Compared with photocatalytic (72.4%) and electrocatalytic (10.4%) process within 120 min, photoelectrocatalytic process demonstrated the strongest degradation activity (85.4%) with significant synergy. The prepared TiO 2-x NTAs/g-C 3 N 4 photoanode showed robust stability, maintaining nearly unchanged ENR degradation efficiency over 10 cycles. Radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance analysis identified the photogenerated holes (h⁺) and superoxide radicals ( • O 2 ⁻) as the dominant reactive species. The synergistic interplay between Ti 3+ doping and heterojunction engineering enabled dual optimization of photon utilization and interfacial charge dynamics. Density functional theory calculations coupled with product analysis elucidated three primary degradation pathways: piperazine ring cleavage, quinolone group oxidation, and defluorination. This work provides mechanistic insights into antibiotic degradation and advances material paradigms for photoelectrocatalytic water remediation.

Ti3+-TiO2/g-C3N4 mesostructured nanosheets heterojunctions as efficient visible-light-driven photocatalysts

Siyu Tan,Zipeng Xing,Jiaqi Zhang,Zhenzi Li,Xiaoyan Wu,Jiayi Cui,Junyan Kuang,Qi Zhu,Wei Zhou

Ti 3+ self-doped TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 mesostructured nanosheets heterojunctions (Ti 3+ -TiO 2 /Meso-g-C 3 N 4 ) have been prepared via calcination-sonication assisted method using amino cyanamide as precursors, combined with a solid-state chemical reduction method. The Ti 3+ -TiO 2 /Meso-g-C 3 N 4 heterojunctions with narrow band gap of ∼2.21 eV possess relative high surface area of ∼73.8 m 2  g −1 , and large pore size of ∼10 nm. Remarkably, the Ti 3+ -TiO 2 /Meso-g-C 3 N 4 heterojunctions exhibit excellent visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity for degradating phenol in wastewaters. The photocatalytic hydrogen production rate of Ti 3+ -TiO 2 /Meso-g-C 3 N 4 heterojunctions rise to ∼290.2 μmol h −1  g −1 , which is about 4 and 14 times higher than that of the bare Meso-g-C 3 N 4 and TiO 2 , respectively. The enhanced photocatalytic activity may be ascribed to the synergetic effect of the mesoporous structure providing sufficient surface active sites, and Ti 3+ self-doping and the formed heterojunctions promoting the spatial separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs.

Continuous g-C3N4 layer-coated porous TiO2 fibers with enhanced photocatalytic activity toward H2 evolution and dye degradation

Jing Liu,Jinxiao Zheng,Guichu Yue,Huaike Li,Zhaoyue Liu,Yong Zhao,Nü Wang,Chenghua Sun,Zhimin Cui

TiO2/g-C3N4 composite photocatalysts with various merits, including low-cost, non-toxic, and environment friendliness, have potential application for producing clean energy and removing organic pollutants to deal with the global energy shortage and environmental contamination. Coating a continuous g-C3N4 layer on TiO2 fibers to form a core/shell structure that could improve the separation and transit efficiency of photo-induced carriers in photocatalytic reactions is still a challenge. In this work, porous TiO2 (P-TiO2)@g-C3N4 fibers were prepared by a hard template-assisted electrospinning method together with the g-C3N4 precursor in an immersing and calcination process. The continuous g-C3N4 layer was fully packed around the P-TiO2 fibers tightly to form a TiO2@g-C3N4 core/shell composite with a strong TiO2/g-C3N4 heterojunction, which greatly enhanced the separation efficiency of photo-induced electrons and holes. Moreover, the great length–diameter ratio configuration of the fiber catalyst was favorable for the recycling of the catalyst. The P-TiO2@g-C3N4 core/shell composite exhibited a significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance both in H2 generation and dye degradation reactions under visible light irradiation, owing to the specific P-TiO2@g-C3N4 core/shell structure and the high-quality TiO2/g-C3N4 heterojunction in the photocatalyst. This work offers a promising strategy to produce photocatalysts with high efficiency in visible light through a rational structure design.

Mesoporous TiO2@g-C3N4 Nanostructure-Enhanced Photocatalytic Degradation of Tetracycline Under Full-Spectrum Sunlight

Lizhe Ma,Zhiyong Fang,Jieli Duan,Jin Li,Kefu Zhu,Yinlong Jiang,Bang Ji,Zhou Yang

TiO2has broad prospects in reducing the safety risks posed by emerging pollutants in water environments. However, the high recombination rate of photogenerated carriers limits the activity and photon utilization efficiency of TiO2. In this study, mesoporous TiO2(m-TiO2) and ultra-thin g-C3N4nanosheets were composited using a hydrothermal method, with the m-TiO2tightly and uniformly wrapped by g-C3N4. The chemical structure, elemental composition, and optical properties of the heterojunction were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis-DRS). The activity of the m-TiO2@g-C3N4was evaluated by the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH). Results showed that the heterojunction exhibited significantly enhanced reactivity compared to pure m-TiO2and g-C3N4, with kinetic rates of TCH being 1.48 and 6.84 times that of pure m-TiO2and g-C3N4, respectively. The TCH degradation kinetic rate varied from 0.194 min−1to 0.026 min−1and then decreased to 0.015 min−1on the scale of the bandgap and the number of absorbed photons in m-TiO2@g-C3N4. Concurrently, a 10wt% doping amount of g-C3N4significantly increased the reaction rate of photogenerated carriers in the system compared to the recombination rate, corresponding to excellent photon efficiency. Reproducibility was evaluated, and a possible degradation mechanism is proposed. This study opens new perspectives for the optimization of catalyst preparation processes aimed at enhancing photon efficiency.

Photoelectrocatalytic degradation of phenol-containing wastewater by TiO2/g-C3N4 hybrid heterostructure thin film

Zhen Wei,Fenfen Liang,Yanfang Liu,Wenjiao Luo,Jun Wang,Wenqing Yao,Yongfa Zhu

TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 (TCN) thin film electrode was fabricated via a surface hybridization and dip-coating method. Phenol could be completely mineralized and the pollutants in coking wastewater could be degraded quickly by TCN under simulated solar light and electric field. The characteristics of the photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) degradation of phenol-containing coking wastewater were investigated under visible light, ultraviolet light and simulated solar irradiation. The results showed that phenol was degraded completely by the TCN-0.3 with a 1.5   V bias in 1.5   h under simulated solar irradiation with 100% TOC removal rate. 45% of the TOC for the coking wastewater was removed by the TCN-0.3 with a 1.5   V bias under 5.0   h simulated solar irradiation, which was 2.45 and 5.69 times as high as that of the pure TiO 2 and g-C 3 N 4 , respectively. The surface hybrid heterojunction formed between TiO 2 and g-C 3 N 4 promotes the migration of the photogenerated electrons and holes and greatly improves the degradation efficiency with applied potential. The significant synergistic effect between the electrocatalytic and photocatalytic oxidation processes in PEC is conducive to electron-hole pair separation, producing the more active substances, such as hydroxyl radicals, and increases the degree of degradation and mineralization of phenolic compounds.

In-situ construction of core–shell structured TiB2-TiO2@g-C3N4 for efficient photocatalytic degradation

Huijun Yu,Shasha Xu,Shijie Zhang,Shuguang Wang,Zuoli He

g-C 3 N 4 based heterojunction photocatalysts attract much attention as degradation materials for organic pollutants due to their wide light absorption range and rich photoinduced carriers. Strategies to effectively improve photoelectron separation and transmission have become a research hotspot. Herein, a novel heterojunction TiB 2 -TiO 2 @g-C 3 N 4 photocatalyst with core–shell structure was constructed by in-situ growth of g-C 3 N 4 on the TiB 2 -TiO 2 cores using one-step calcination method. The composite processes a higher photodegradation performance of Rhodamine B (RhB) and 4-Chlorophenol (4-CP) compared to the pure g-C 3 N 4 . The results show that the surface of TiB 2 -TiO 2 cores contains numerous ‘TiB 2 bridges’, as photoinduced carriers transport channels, which effectively accelerate photoinduced e - and h + migration. In addition, the g-C 3 N 4 coated on TiB 2 -TiO 2 cores forms a Z-scheme heterojunction, which hinders the recombination of photogenerated charges resulting in a longer electron lifetime. Furthermore, the TiB 2 also could act as acceptors of electrons for the formation of •O 2– . The main active substances for degradation of RhB are •OH, •O 2– and h + . This strategy is applicable to design highly capable heterojunction photocatalysts by constructing fast electronic transmission channels.

Direct Z-scheme P–TiO2/g-C3N4 heterojunction for the photocatalytic degradation of sulfa antibiotics

Dai Yongheng,Yuan Huayu,Li Jiang,Su Qi,Yi Qianwen,Zhang Yuntao

The construction of direct Z-scheme heterojunctions with high photocatalytic degradation ability is important for wastewater treatment, but there are still many unsolved challenges. In this article, we report the fabrication of a Z-scheme P–TiO2/g-C3N4 (CNPT-X) heterostructure by the calcination method. Under simulated sunlight, CNPT-X composites are found to show excellent degradation performance against sulfonamide antibiotics sulfadiazine (SD), sulfamethazine (SM2), sulfamonomethoxine (SMM), and sulfamethoxazole (SMZ). CNPT-3 (400 mg L−1) can be used to degrade four sulfa antibiotics within 90 min, with a degradation rate as high as 99%, which is higher than that for P–TiO2 and g-C3N4 alone. The internal electron transfer paths and mechanisms for the composites are revealed by ESR radical detection experiments, XPS energy spectrum shifts, valence band positions and active material quenching experiments. Furthermore, the degradation products are analyzed by GC-MS, and four possible degradation pathways for sulfonamide pollutants are proposed. This photocatalyst provides new insights into the fundamental aspects of the photocatalytic degradation mechanism for composite pollutants, as well as new ideas for practical environmental applications.

Sunflower-inspired hydrogel evaporator with mutual reinforcement of evaporation and photodegradation for integrated water management

Jincui Gu,Yi Zhang,Peng Xiao,Qi Fan,Jianmin Guan,Kun Liang,Tao Chen

Solar interface photothermal evaporation is a promising strategy to ensure affordable water production. However, obtaining freshwater from wastewater containing highly concentrated volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is still a high hanker. Here, a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based hydrogel evaporator was developed to mutually reinforce photothermal evaporation and photocatalytic degradation. The vertical structure promoted the rapid transfer of water molecules between the microchannels. Moreover, the solar absorption efficiency can be improved through multiple reflections. Furthermore, introducing polypyrrole (PPy) and MXene@TiO 2 @g-C 3 N 4 (MTG) heterojunction can not only regulate the interaction force between the polymer network and water molecules to reduce the evaporation enthalpy, but also endow the PVA/PPy@MTG hydrogel with excellent photocatalytic degradation performance. Besides, the first principles simulation indicated that this hydrogel displayed higher binding energy for contaminants than water molecules. Therefore, it can achieve an evaporation rate of ∼3.0 kg m −2  h −1 and energy efficiency of ∼97.2 % under 1-sun, higher than the structure-disordered PVA/PPy@MTG hydrogel. In addition, it can degrade different complex components, especially for highly concentrated VOCs (100 ppm) with an efficiency of >94.2 %, exceeding most of the reported integrated evaporators. This work will pave a potential pathway to design novel evaporation for sustainable water remediation.

Tailoring Charge Dynamics via Cu-Doped TiO2/g-C3N4 S-Scheme Composites for Solar Hydrogen Evolution

Chunxia Wang,Yanxin Sun,Zhuo Wang,Yifeng Zeng,Qin-Yi Li,Xinchen Kang,Guoyong Huang

Copper (Cu) doping modifies the band structure of TiO 2 by slightly narrowing the bandgap and shifting the Fermi level, while creating localized states that serve as temporary electron reservoirs to suppress carriers rapid recombination. On this basis, a ternary heterojunction Cu-TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 (Cu-CT) was constructed by anchoring Cu-TiO 2 onto g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets. The synergistic interaction between Cu-doping and the S-scheme interfacial configuration generates an internal electric field that promotes vectorial carrier migration, enabling electrons in the conduction band of Cu-TiO 2 and holes in the valence band of g-C 3 N 4 . This spatial separation preserves strong redox potentials and markedly suppresses recombination. Consequently, Cu-CT achieves a hydrogen evolution rate of 10.21 mmol g -1 h -1 , more than twenty times higher than pristine TiO 2 . In-situ XPS, KPFM, and DFT analyses collectively validate the S-scheme charge-transfer pathway and highlight the synergistic role of Cu doping with heterojunction engineering, providing mechanistic insights to the rational design of advanced ternary photocatalysts for efficient solar-driven hydrogen production.

C-doped TiO2/g-C3N4 composites derived from titanium ester-modified precursors with enhanced photocatalytic activity

Wang Guoqiang,Yu Qingbo,Feng Xiujuan

Using titanium ester Tyzor 371 and dicyandiamide as raw materials, modified precursors DCDA-x were synthesized by hydrothermal method with controlled titanium ester ratios, followed by calcination to prepare TiO 2 -composited C-doped g-C 3 N 4 catalysts TCCN-x. The study shows that hydroxyl groups of the titanium ester form hydrogen bonds with amino groups of dicyandiamide, and their combined steric hindrance suppresses the polymerization of g-C 3 N 4 . Among them, the TCCN-3 precursor exhibits the strongest hydrogen bonding and the most significant inhibition effect. During calcination, the titanium ester decomposes to produce amorphous carbon that integrates into the heptazine rings or interlayers of g-C 3 N 4 , facilitating charge transfer. Simultaneously, the formed TiO 2 creates heterojunctions with g-C 3 N 4 , enhancing carrier separation. Together, these effects synergistically improve the photocatalytic performance. After 60 min of visible-light irradiation, TCCN-3 achieves a methylene blue degradation rate of 53.02%, which is 2.24 times that of pure g-C 3 N 4 (23.60%), exhibiting the best performance. Kinetics modulation of Cu‑TiO2/g‑C3N4 via type‑ii heterojunction for enhanced photocatalytic nitrogen fixation

Dongfeng Sun,Yu Kang,Junwei Wang,Luo Huang,ShuKai Ding,Guohui Dong,Yanning Qu,Yuan Yu

Ammonia synthesis via photocatalytic nitrogen fixation is regarded as a green and sustainable alternative to the conventional Haber-Bosch process. Nevertheless, its practical application is greatly hindered by the chemically inert N N triple bonds and slow reaction kinetics. In this work, a Cu-doped TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 composite with a well-defined type-II heterojunction was synthesized through a facile wet-chemical method integrating low-temperature crystallization and in-situ molecular assembly. Characterizations confirm that Cu-TiO 2 nanoparticles are evenly immobilized on g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets, which effectively suppresses nanoparticle aggregation. On the one hand, Cu doping tunes the band structure of TiO 2 and introduces abundant oxygen vacancies, greatly promoting the adsorption and activation of N 2 molecules. On the other hand, the formed type-II heterojunction establishes an internal electric field, which broadens light response and accelerates the separation and migration of photogenerated charge carriers. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of Cu doping, oxygen vacancies and type-II heterojunction, the optimal Cu-TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 (CuTCN-2) achieves an outstanding NH 3 evolution rate of 91.14 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 with a quantum yield of 1.75% at 420 nm under simulated solar illumination. The activity is 7.6-, 3.4- and 34.1-fold higher than that of bare TiO 2 , single Cu-TiO 2 and pristine g-C 3 N 4 , respectively. This work reveals that the co-regulation of heteroatom doping, defect engineering and heterojunction construction can remarkably boost photocatalytic kinetics. It also provides a feasible design principle for high-performance photocatalysts toward solar-driven nitrogen fixation.

Zujiang Liu,Xuehua Yuan,Tianhao Chen,Chongqing Yu,Luyan Xiong,Zhixuan Zeng,Zeyu Pan,Gnanasekar Sathishkumar,Jing Li,Jin Ye,En-Tang Kang,Liqun Xu,Xi Rao

The escalating levels of indoor bacterial contamination and air pollution considerably threaten public health. In this work, we synthesized a three-dimensional flower-like TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 nano-powder with a Z-scheme heterojunction structure, which demonstrated superior photocatalytic performance and efficient free radical generation capability, enabling effective mitigation of bacterial pathogens and indoor volatile organic compounds under low-power light irradiation. The material achieved 100% degradation of formaldehyde within 40   minutes under 420   nm LED irradiation. Antibacterial tests showed a 100% inactivation rate for S. aureus within 60   minutes and complete elimination of E. coli within 40   minutes. Characterizations and DFT calculations had confirmed the establishment of the Z-scheme heterojunction, which significantly decreased the band gap and improves the absorption of visible light. Concurrently, the efficient separation of charge carriers and the transfer of electrons facilitated the production of reactive oxygen species. In conclusion, this research presents a novel and environmentally sustainable approach to developing high-performance photocatalysts for applications in indoor environment improvement.
