Efficient Synthesis of Low-Polydispersity UHMWPE by Elevating Active Sites on Anchored POSS Molecules

Peng Liang,Yuming Chen,Congjing Ren,Mei Chen,Binbo Jiang,Jingdai Wang,Yongrong Yang,Wei Li

Ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) with a low polydispersity exhibits excellently physical and mechanical properties. In this work, a polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS)-modified Ziegler–Natta catalyst has been explored to synthesize the UHMWPE with a narrow molecular weight distribution. Diffuse reflection infrared spectroscopy combined with CO as the molecular probe, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and diffuse reflectance UV–vis spectroscopy are employed to trace the evolution of the catalyst structure based on the investigation of vibrational and electronic properties of molecules. The results demonstrate that the chemically grafted POSS molecules are distributed evenly on the silica surface at the molecular level. The POSS can capture the MgTi compounds through protonation with the residual silanols, acting as a vertical support for active sites. The resulting active sites grafted on the POSS present much stronger Lewis acidity and were less heterogeneous (only tetra-coordinated Mg2+ species) in comparison to the active sites directly grafted or absorbed on the silica surface. This less heterogeneity of active sites enables to synthesize the UHMWPE with a much narrow distribution, reducing the molecular weight distribution from 6.7 to 3.9.

Influence of phosphorus-grafted expandable graphite on the flame-retardant property of UHMWPE composite

Huaming Wang,Jingshi Cao,Changlin Cao,Yiyou Guo,Fubin Luo,Qingrong Qian,Baoquan Huang,Liren Xiao,Qinghua Chen

In this paper, an efficient flame retardant, 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO) was covalently grafted onto the surface of expandable graphite (EG). The resultant DOPO-grafted expandable graphite (EG-g-DOPO) was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), respectively. The thermal stability of EG-g-DOPO was also evaluated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Moreover, a series of flame-retardant ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) composites with various concentrations of EG-g-DOPO were prepared and evaluated. The results show that the UHMWPE composite with 20 wt% EG-g-DOPO possesses a satisfactory UL-94 flame-retardant grade (V-0) and a high limiting oxygen index (30.6%). The residual char of the UHMWPE composite with higher EG-g-DOPO concentration shows more compact and integrated, providing an efficient barrier for heat release.

Simultaneously enhanced mechanical properties and flame retardancy of UHMWPE with polydopamine-coated expandable graphite

Huaming Wang,Jingshi Cao,Fubin Luo,Changlin Cao,Qingrong Qian,Baoquan Huang,Liren Xiao,Qinghua Chen

The potential prospect of expandable graphite (EG) in the development of polymer composites is severely limited by required large additions and poor interface compatibility with the polymer. Inspired by mussels, polydopamine (PDA) can be used as an effective interface modifier for EG to prepare ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) composites with superior mechanical properties and high flame retardancy. The surface of expandable graphite (EG) was coated with a thin adhesive PDA film through self-polymerization of dopamine. The modified expandable graphite (EG@PDA) was combined with APP to prepare UHMWPE flame retardant composites. Compared with UHMWPE/APP/EG (with 20 wt% APP/EG), UHMWPE/APP/EG@PDA (with 20 wt% APP/EG@PDA) gives a decrement by 16.7% in limiting oxygen index, 29.7% in the peak of the heat release rate, 20.4% in total heat release and 49.3% in total smoke release, with an increment by 37% in tensile strength and 67.9% in elongation at break, respectively. It is suggested that the presence of PDA as an interface modifier can greatly improve the interfacial compatibility between EG and UHMWPE. Moreover, it can lead to forming more char residue and reducing the release of smoke particulates during combustion of the composites.

Superhydrophobic UHMWPE Foams with High Mechanical Robustness and Durability Fabricated by Supercritical CO2 Foaming

Binbin Sun,Jun Li,Yahao Guo,Heng Li,Hao-Yang Mi,Binbin Dong,Chuntai Liu,Changyu Shen

The low durability and stability of superhydrophobic foams and high fabrication costs are the main reasons that limit their practical applications in water remediation and oil recycling. Herein, an extremely superhydrophobic and exceptionally robust foam was developed based on ultrahigh-molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) by supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) foaming and subsequent surface modification. The developed foam comprises a highly porous structure decorated with hydrophobic silica nanoparticles and aligned UHMWPE crystallites, constructing a complex micro–nanosized hierarchical morphology, which contributed to an unprecedented water contact angle (WCA) of 162° and a sliding angle of 1°. When used in selective oil absorption and oil/water separation, the foam demonstrated about 100% separation efficiency in repetitive use and even under a vacuum of −70 Kpa due to its high water repellency. More importantly, the foam has outstanding tolerance against mechanical damages such as ultrasonication, bending and twisting, tape peeling, steel wool abrasion, and knife scratching. The surface could maintain the hierarchical structure and a WCA of over 156° after enduring different damages. Moreover, when the surface is clogged, the foam could restore its superhydrophobicity by arbitrary fracturing and cutting, resulting in a theoretically unlimited lifespan. This work not only proposes a UHMWPE-based superhydrophobic foam with extremely high superhydrophobicity, durability, and separation efficiency but also provides insights into the design and mass production of ultraefficient and robust superhydrophobic porous materials for practical applications.

3D-Printed Auricular Scaffold Based on Porous UHMWPE Reinforced with PVA/CS Double-Network Hydrogel

Jianxun Yao,Jifan Zhan,Hanwu Liu,Tingting Yan

Auricular reconstruction remains a significant challenge in tissue engineering due to the auricle’s complex anatomy and functional requirements. To address the limitations of autologous cartilage grafts, we developed a composite scaffold consisting of porous ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) integrated with a polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan (PVA/CS) double-network hydrogel reinforced with 2 wt% nano-hydroxyapatite (HA). The scaffold was fabricated via powder sintering and physical crosslinking and exhibited high porosity (>41%), a tensile strength of 2.80 MPa, and enhanced water retention. The addition of HA improved both the mechanical strength and antibacterial properties of the composite. The hydrogel component demonstrated stable swelling behavior, hemolysis rates below 5%, and good cytocompatibility. These findings demonstrate that the UHMWPE/PVA-CS/HA composite scaffold, combining the rigidity of a sintered porous framework with the flexibility and bioactivity of a reinforced hydrogel, offers a novel and promising platform for patient-specific auricular reconstruction with balanced mechanical, biological, and antibacterial properties.

Effect of Nano-SiO2 on Different Stages of UHMWPE/HDPE Fiber Preparation via Melt Spinning

Qun Yang,Run Zhang,Mingfei Liu,Ping Xue,Lichao Liu

Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE)/high-density polyethylene (HDPE) blend with lower viscosity is more suitable for melt spinning compared to pure UHMWPE; however, the mechanical property of the blend fiber is hard to dramatically improve (the maximum tensile strength of 998.27 MPa). Herein, different content modified-nano-SiO2is incorporated to UHMWPE/HDPE blend fiber. After adding 0.5 wt% nano-SiO2, the tensile strength and initial modulus of UHMWPE/HDPE/nano-SiO2fiber are increased to 1211 MPa and 12.81 GPa, respectively, 21.57% and 43.32% higher than that of UHMWPE/HDPE fiber. Meanwhile, the influence of the nano-SiO2content on the performance for as-spun filament and fiber are emphatically analyzed. The crystallinity and molecular chain orientation of as-spun filament reduces with the addition of nano-SiO2. On the contrary, for fiber, the addition of nano-SiO2promoted the crystallinity, molecular chain orientation and grain refinement more obvious at a lower content. Furthermore, the possible action mechanism of nano-SiO2in the as-spun filament extrusion and fiber hot drawing stage is explained.

Gradient structured UHMWPE/graphene composites for integrated electromagnetic shielding, thermal management and controllable joule heating

Xinyu Yao,Jiancheng Sun,Rubing Zhang,Hongyuan Zhou,Yonghui Wang,Hong Zhang

Room-temperature gravity-driven preparation of gradient UHMWPE/graphene composite. • This method enables scalable 22 cm sample fabrication with good repeatability. • Double-sided gradient samples deliver max 85.9 dB X-band EMI SE at 2 mm thickness. • The composite exhibits high thermal conductivity and tunable Joule heating. Active antenna units for terrestrial and space communications require large-area processable materials with ultrathin thickness, low surface density, flexibility, electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and heat dissipation properties. Existing composite materials struggle to balance simple fabrication processes, large-scale production and efficient multifunctional integration. In this work, we innovatively propose a room-temperature multi-sided drying strategy for gravity-driven assembly of gradient-structured lightweight multifunctional UHMWPE/graphene composites. This strategy requires no complex equipment or processes, and can stably fabricate 22 cm large-size gradient structure materials with good process repeatability while ensuring excellent overall performance of the products. The results show that the sample with double-layer graphene-enriched layers exhibits the best comprehensive performance, with a density of 0.947 g/cm 3 and a maximum tensile strength of 8.05 MPa; at a stacked thickness of 2 mm, it achieves a maximum total shielding effectiveness (SE T ) of 85.9 dB in the X-band (literature average: 30–80 dB), an in-plane thermal conductivity of 15.82 W/(m·K) (literature average: 1–13 W/(m·K)), and its Joule heating temperature reaches 82.4 °C at an applied voltage of 5  V . This work provides a novel approach for the controllable fabrication of lightweight multifunctional composite materials.

Simultaneously enhanced antioxidation and wear resistance in UHMWPE molded plastic by adding natural polyphenol antioxidant

Jinghan Wu,Tianhao Yang,Peng Dong,Qin Zhang,Ke Wang

Ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), with its excellent wear resistance and biocompatibility, has important application as artificial joints. The most commonly used method to improve its wear resistance is to introduce crosslinking through irradiation. However, free radicals are introduced after radiation, which are easy to cause inflammation in the human body. Some antioxidants, such as vitamin E ( V E ), need to be added. However, the addition of V E could reduce the crosslinking density of UHMWPE and worsen the wear resistance of the material. Therefore, obtaining new antioxidants that could eliminate free radicals without affecting or even improving the crosslinking density of materials during irradiation is an important subject worth exploring. In this paper, a kind of natural polyphenol substance, resveratrol (RSV), was introduced as a new antioxidant and crosslinking promoter during irradiation crosslinking of UHMWPE. RSV can better eliminate free radicals than V E and further improve the crosslinking density to obtain UHMWPE materials with excellent oxidation resistance and high wear resistance. The multi-active phenolic hydroxyl structure of RSV molecule provides its free-radical trapping ability, and the appropriate molecular size of RSV may promote the H -type crosslinking of UHMWPE, thereby increasing the crosslinking density. This work provides a new pathway for developing high-performance artificial joint prosthesis materials.

Raouf Belgacemi,Mehdi Derradji,Djalal Trache,Abdeldjalil Zegaoui,Oussama Mehelli,Ahmed Fouzi Tarchoun

Aiming the development of highly performant polymer-based hybrid materials, the typical bisphenol-A based epoxy resin was reinforced with oxidized UHMWPE fibers and various amounts of silane surface modified silicon nitride (Si3N4) nanoparticles. The reinforcing phases underwent optimized surface modifications to create a fully connected network for an improved stress transfer between the constituents. The efficiency of the grafting methodology was confirmed by vibrational and morphological analyses. Meanwhile, the effects of the adopted modifications techniques on the mechanical properties were thoroughly discussed. Furthermore, static and dynamic mechanical investigations along with impact tests were conducted to study the effects of various amounts of Si3N4 nanoparticles on the overall performances of the epoxy/UHMWPE composite. The obtained results confirmed the great benefits from creating a fully connected hybrid network. The as such developed hybrids can be seen as promising materials for the intended use.

Enhanced interfacial bonding in UHMWPE fiber composites using one-step impregnation combined with EP activation

Chao Lu,Hang Yue,Junsheng Wang,Hongyang Wang,Ke Shang,Weiping Han,Xiaohong Qin

The identification of a practical and more effective surface modification method for improving the interfacial adhesion and bonding capacity of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) has been the research focus in the field of UHMWPE fibers. In this research, a ONE-STEP impregnation process was developed and investigated. The surface analysis revealed that consistent coating was generated on the fiber surface, leading to a significantly increased surface roughness. The chemical species and functional groups on the fiber were characterised by XPS and ATR-FTIR. Microdroplet test showed that the UHMWPE/EP interfacial shear strength (IFSS) was increased by 338.1%, indicating successful functional groups introduction. The increase of fiber surface roughness was synchronously validated in the experiment of yarn pull out from fabric with an increase of 398.9%. The duration of processing was considerably reduced by the revolutionary ONE-STEP impregnation process with efficiency improvement of 63.6% on the premise of strong interface bonding. By utilizing a strong interface between the UHMWPE and epoxy as a transition layer, the adhesion strength between the UHMWPE and TPU was enhanced to 33.1 N. This advancement presents new opportunities for interfacial properties enhancement of non-reactive fiber-reinforced composites.

Enhancing the Interfacial Property Between UHMWPE Fibers and Epoxy Through Polydopamine and SiO2 Surface Modification

Nengjun Ben,Sulun Jiang,Liping Zhao,Jiale Gong,Lu Shen,Kui Wang,Chenyang Tang

Graphical UHMWPE fiber with improved interfacial adhesion was fabricated by grafting modified SiO 2 and PDA simultaneously onto the surface of UHMWPE fiber. After modification, the mechanical and interfacial properties of modified UHMWPE/Epoxy composites via the “one-step” method were increased by 43.7 % and 146 %, respectively, compared to unmodified UHMWPE fiber. Here, a combination of dopamine self-polymerization and epoxy modified SiO 2 (M-SiO 2 ) grafting was proposed, with the purpose of increasing interfacial adhesion of UHMWPE fiber. Inspired by mussel adhesion, polydopamine (PDA) was deposited onto the surface of UHMWPE fiber to form a thin layer with amino and hydroxyl groups. M-SiO 2 nanoparticles were then adhered to fiber surface via chemical reactions by a “two-step” or “one-step” technology. In the “two-step” technique, the M-SiO 2 nanoparticles were adhered to the surface of PDA modified UHMWPE fiber via reactions between epoxy and amino groups. In the “one-step” method, M-SiO 2 and dopamine were added into the UHMWPE/Tris solution at the same time. Surface morphology and thermal properties of various UHMWPE fibers were tested by SEM and TGA, respectively. Surface wettability of different UHMWPE fibers were evaluated by dynamic contact angle. The results proved that PDA and M-SiO 2 were successfully adhered to the surface of UHMWPE fibers. The mechanical property of modified UHMWPE/Epoxy composites was investigated, and 43.7 % improvement was obtained, compared with unmodified UHMWPE/Epoxy composite. Additionally, micro-bond test revealed that the interfacial property (IFSS value) of modified UHMWPE fiber via the “one-step” method was 6.08 MPa, significantly higher than that of unmodified UHMWPE fiber (2.47 MPa).
