Although vanadium-based compounds are considered to be reliable zinc storage materials due to their high theoretical specific capacity, notorious poor conductivity and unstable structure hamper their practical applications. Herein, novel two-dimensional (2D) sandwich-like heterostructures of amorphous vanadium dioxide uniformly grown on two sides of ultrathin MXene nanosheets (A-VO x /M heterostructures) are constructed by ion adsorption method and following low-temperature annealing, which can be readily incorporated into carbon nanotube (CNT) network to obtain freestanding cathodes for aqueous zinc-ion batteries. The combination of 2D heterostructure, amorphous framework and conductive substrate endows A-VO x /M heterostructures with short ion diffusion pathway, high chemical stability, extra active sites and superior electrical conductivity. The freestanding A-VO x /M heterostructured cathodes for aqueous zinc-ion batteries exhibit a remarkable discharge capacity of 362 mAh g −1 at 0.2 A g −1 and high-rate capability of 202 mAh g −1 at 15 A g −1 as well as admirable cycling stability with a capacity decay of only 0.0043% per cycle over 3000 cycles. Besides, due to the outstanding conductivity and stability of freestanding A-VO x /M heterostructured cathodes, soft-package batteries are assembled with steady electrochemical performance, suggesting brilliant future in the field of energy storage.

A dynamic crystal-amorphous interface engineering strategy is proposed to address the intrinsic challenges of sluggish kinetics and structural degradation in vanadium-based cathodes for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs). Through spontaneous electrochemical phase transformation, vanadium oxide/vanadium nitride anchored on carbon nanofibers (V 2 O 3 /VN-CNFs) is in situ converted into a vanadium oxide electrode featuring an intimately coupled crystalline/amorphous VO x (c-VO x /a-VO x ) heterointerface. This adaptive structure combines the merits of both phases: the crystalline domains ensure efficient electron conduction and framework stability, while the amorphous regions offer numerous defective sites for rapid Zn 2+ storage and diffusion. The strong coupling between the two phases generates built-in electric fields at the interface, which effectively promote charge transfer and reduce Zn 2+ diffusion barriers, as further elucidated by DFT calculations. Benefiting from this unique architecture, the c-VO x /a-VO x -CNFs cathode achieves a remarkable capacity of 715.3 mAh g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 , excellent rate performance (400.1 mAh g −1 at 100 A g −1 ), and outstanding cycling stability (95.5% retention after 20,000 cycles). This study highlights the promise of electrochemically self-optimized heterointerfaces in advancing high-performance AZIBs.

Graphical In situ carbonization : V 2 O 3 -intercalated N-doped graphene (NG) nanobelts are synthesized by one-step controlled pyrolysis of inorganic-organic hybrid VO x /3-phenylpropylamine nanobelts under Ar and the obtained V 2 O 3 /NG nanobelts possess well-defined 0D-in-1D morphology and excellent electrochemical performance as anodes for alkali-ion batteries. V 2 O 3 is a promising anode material for lithium- and sodium-ion batteries due to its high theoretical capacity and natural abundance. However, the low conductivity, sluggish ion reaction kinetics, and large volume change limit the rate and cycling stability in batteries. In this work, the V 2 O 3 -nanoparticles-intercalated N-doped graphene (V 2 O 3 /NG) hybrid is prepared by one-step controlled pyrolysis of inorganic-organic hybrid VO x /3-phenylpropylamine nanobelts under Ar. The intercalated 3-phenylpropylamine molecules are carbonized in situ into the NG layers and the sandwiched VO x layers are converted into 10–20 nm V 2 O 3 nanoparticles. The V 2 O 3 /NG nanobelts possess well-defined 0D-in-1D morphology and excellent electrochemical performance such as high reversible capacities of 435 mAh g −1 at 100 mA g −1 over 250 cycles for Li-ion storage and 154 mAh g −1 at 500 mA g −1 over 500 cycles for Na-ion storage. The well-defined 0D-in-1D hybrid V 2 O 3 /NG structure with small V 2 O 3 nanoparticles, interconnected nanochannels, and conductive NG layers offer abundant electrochemical active sites leading to fast Li + and electron transport and excellent alkali-ion storage.

Lithium-sulfur (Li–S) batteries are considered to be promising next-generation rechargeable system. However, the shuttle effect for lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) and slow sulfur reaction kinetics due to multistep phase transitions severely limit the practical application of Li–S batteries. Herein, via dual-strategy of heterogeneous interface and defect engineering, a cocklebur-like sulfur host with the TiO 2 -VO x heterostructure (CTVHs) for long-life Li–S batteries is fabricated, and atomic-level clarification of the chemical interaction between the substrate and LiPSs from a theoretical viewpoint is achieved. Benefiting from the heterostructure, the high adsorption energy heterojunction interface works as capturing centers to trap LiPSs which ensures rapid diffusion to VO x . In addition, the defect-rich spiny VO x is endowed with high catalytic activity towards LiPSs and fast lithium-ion migration so as to effectively implement one-step adsorption diffusion transformation. DFT calculations show that the introduction of a heterostructure can change the electronic structure, thereby improving the adsorption capacity of CTVHs. Electrochemical measurements reveal favorable kinetics for Li 2 S deposition, better cyclability, and an outstanding discharge capacity. The CTVHs/S cathode delivers a slow capacity decay rate of 0.029% per cycle and achieves nearly 100% coulombic efficiency (CE) at 0.5 C over 1400 cycles. This proposed strategy provides broad prospects to promote the adsorption-conversion of LiPSs for long-life Li–S batteries.

Support modification is a simple but effective method to promote olefin polymerization catalysts, which is often correlated with enhanced acidity. Here, following this rule, the bimetallic catalyst CrOx/VOx/silica for UHMWPE/HDPE in-reactor blends was modified by alumina, sulfate, and alumina/sulfate. All modified catalysts were promoted notably, with ethylene polymerization activities about twice that of the unmodified one. Similarly, NH3-TPD and FTIR-pyridine confirmed their enhanced acidity. Theoretical studies emphasized the importance of Lewis acidic Al³⁺ site, which induced geometric and electronic rearrangement of the active site, thus reducing steric hindrance and improving LUMO reactivity. Sulfation further strengthened Al³⁺ acidity, exacerbating rearrangement and lowering the insertion barrier. Contrary to expectations, the alumina/sulfate-modified catalyst—with much stronger Brønsted and Lewis acidity—was only moderately promoted. XPS, DRS UV-vis, elemental analysis, and DFT results indicate that, while modification improves metal center electron deficiency and facilitates ethylene insertion, stronger acidity also weakens the anchoring of Cr(VI) and V(V) active precursors and promotes inactive Cr(III) and V(III) species. This effect was more pronounced for the superacidic alumina/sulfate modifier, partially counteracting its promotional effect.

Hierarchical porous structures are highly desired for various applications. However, it is still challenging to obtain such materials with tunable architectures. Here, this paper reports hierarchical nanomaterials with oriented 2D pores by taking advantages of thermally instable bonds in vanadium-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). High-temperature calcination of these MOFs accompanied by the loss of coordinated water molecules and other components enables the formation of orderly slit-like 2D pores in vanadium oxide/porous carbon nanorods (VO x /PCs). This unique combination leads to an increase of the reactive surface area. In addition, optimized VO x /PCs demonstrate high-rate capability and ultralong cycling life for sodium storage. The assembled full cells also show high capacity and cycling stability. This report provides an effective strategy for producing MOFs-derived composites with hierarchical porous architectures for energy storage.
