A novel oleogel system was developed, and its characteristics and properties were investigated. The results indicate that a low-cost, low-fat and low hardness oleogel product was formed by potato starch, candelilla wax, oil, and distilled water. Specifically, the content of potato starch and candelilla wax in the oleogel system was 5 wt%. A potato starch/candelilla wax ratio from 1.22 to 5.67 led to the formation of a type II starch-lipid oleogel system, and the content of distilled water was 45 times the starch content. All the above-mentioned information demonstrated that starch/wax-based oleogels are a typical lipid system. They can reduce the content of wax and oil in oleogel systems, form oleogel products with low hardness values and exhibit great potential in the field of low-fat food and low-cost food industrial applications.

The cuticular wax serves as the outermost hydrophobic barrier of plants against nonstomatal water loss and various environmental stresses. An objective of this study was to investigate the contribution of the mutualistic fungal endophyteEpichloë gansuensisto leaf cuticular wax ofAchnatherum inebriansunder different soil moisture availability. Through a pot experiment and gas chromatography−mass spectrometry (GC−MS) analysis, our results indicated that the hydrocarbons were the dominant components of leaf cuticular wax, and the proportion of alcohols, aldehydes, amines, and ethers varied with the presence or absence ofE. gansuensisand different soil moisture availability. Amines and ethers are unique in endophyte-free (EF)A. inebriansplants and endophyte-infected (EI)A. inebriansplants, respectively. By transcriptome analysis, we found a total of 13 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) related to cuticular biosynthesis, includingFabG,desB,SSI2,fadD,BiP,KCS,KAR,FAR, andABCB1. A model is proposed which provides insights for understanding cuticular wax biosynthesis in the association ofA. inebriansplants withE. gansuensis. These results may help guide the functional analyses of candidate genes important for improving the protective layer of cuticular wax of endophyte-symbiotic plants. Keywords:Epichloë gansuensis;Achnatherum inebrians;soil moisture availability;cuticular wax;gas chromatography−mass spectrometry;transcriptome analysis

The substitution of margarine with candelilla wax (CW)-based oleogel is currently a prominent focus of research in the bakery industry. However, the use of CW-based oleogel in cookies increased starch digestibility, potentially posing a risk to human health. Thus, the anti-enzymatic mechanism of lipid-amylose complexes was used to evaluate the influence of olive diacylglycerol stearin (ODS) on starch digestibility in CW-based oleogel cookies. The in vitro digestibility analysis demonstrated that the DCW/ODS-35 cookie exhibited a increase of 27.72 % in slowly digestible starch (SDS) and resistant starch (RS) contents, compared to cookie formulated with margarine. The in-vivo glycemic index analysis revealed that the DCW/ODS-35 cookie had a medium glycemic index of 68. XRD pattern suggested that the presence of ODS in oleogels facilitated the formation of lipid-amylose complexes. The DSC analysis revealed that the addition of ODS resulted in the gelatinization enthalpy of DCW-based cookies increased from 389.9 to 3314.9 J/g. The FTIR spectra indicated that the combination of ODS could promote a short-range ordered structure in DCW-based cookies. Overall, these findings demonstrated that the utilization of DCW-based oleogel presented a viable alternative to commercial margarine in the development of CW-based cookies with reduced starch digestibility.

To explore the effects of salicylic acid (SA) on the softening of postharvest grapes, “Red Globe” grapes ( Vitis vinifera L.) were immersed in 1.0 mM SA for 5 min and stored at 4°C for 56 days. Results revealed that SA treatment could maintain cell wall component contents by inhibiting enzyme activities and gene expression, including pectin methyl esterase, polygalacturonase, and β -galactosidase. Meanwhile, SA application delayed the degradation of wax crystals and maintained higher levels of wax fractions. In addition, SA treatment upregulated the transcription of genes involved in the phenylpropanoid pathway, resulting in higher endogenous phenolics. In conclusion, SA treatment effectively delayed softening by regulating cell wall, cuticular wax, and phenylpropanoid metabolism. These findings provide a theoretical basis for clarifying the mechanism by which SA maintains the fruit quality of grapes, and support the use of exogenous SA as a strategy to extend shelf life and improve fruit quality in commercial storage.

Wearable sweat sensors enable noninvasive, real-time biochemical monitoring, holding significant potential for personalized healthcare. Recently, microfluidic paper-based devices have gained attention in this field for their facile fabrication, cost-effectiveness, and self-actuating operation without equipment. However, the limited liquid-holding capacity of paper restricts sustained directional transport upon saturation, impeding long-term on-body monitoring. Here, we demonstrate a wireless wearable system based on Janus paper-based microfluidic patch (JPMP) for non-invasion real-time continuous detection of three typical metabolic analytes: glucose, creatinine, and uric acid in sweat. JPMP integrates a pair of wax-printed Janus papers in the sweat collection and drainage layers, inspired by the asymmetric wettability of lotus leaves and the tip-directed liquid transport of leaf-tips, to achieve continuous and efficient unidirectional sweat transport, even under saturation conditions. The wax printing method offers a facile and controllable strategy for the scalable fabrication of patterned Janus paper. For multi-parameter detection, JPMP incorporates a paper-based sensor array featuring working electrodes prepared by D-sorbitol-doped PEDOT: PSS conductive ink, fully utilizing porous structure of paper to achieve highly sensitive electrochemical detection. Furthermore, we proposed a method for in-situ growth of three-enzyme-inorganic hybrid nanoflowers on the electrode, successfully extending the lifespan of creatinine enzymatic electrodes. Finally, we evaluated the postprandial metabolic status of healthy participants to validate the wearable system for continuous real-time on-body monitoring, demonstrating its potential for personalized metabolic healthcare.

Solid–liquid phase change materials (PCMs) are widely used in heat management. However, the requirement of no leakage of solid–liquid PCMs during phase transition and suitable deformability at evaluated temperature are contradictory when PCMs are used as thermal interface materials (TIMs). Vitrimer, a kind of material that combines with the advantages of both thermoplastics and thermosets, may be a solution. Herein, polyethylene wax vitrimer (PEWV) is prepared through the dioxaborolane exchange reaction for TIMs with leakage-proof and high-energy-storage ability. Microphase separation occurs between highly cross-linked skeleton and slightly cross-linked chains, which solves the leakage problem of polyethylene wax. Simultaneously, PEWV can achieve a high latent heat storage capacity of about 121.0 J g–1, about 74% of that of PEW, owing to the negligible effect of dynamic cross-linking on the crystallization of PEW. Meanwhile, PEWV can be plastically deformed and tightly adhered to the rigid surface under a slight external force at the phase change temperature, filling the gap at macro- and microscales for improving the heat transfer efficiency. The composites of PEWV and thermal conductive filler show more excellent performance as TIMs than commercial thermal conductive pads. PEWV with no leakage, excellent plasticity, and high latent heat storage capacity provides great application potential in heat storage and thermal interface management.

Replica molding is a well-established technique to fabricate surfaces with micro-patterns. Double replica molding of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was developed to fabricate bio-inspired structures though challenged by the cross-linking between PDMS and PDMS. In this paper, we report a novel Wax Assisted Replica Molding (WARM) method to rapidly and precisely copy the microstructures from versatile substrates to PDMS and hydrogels. The low phase transition temperature, hydrophobicity and low surface free energy of wax were utilized to assist transferring patterns from an original master to final replicas. The potential of WARM was demonstrated by generating patters from bio-inspired materials, such as plant leaves and loose fibrous scaffolds, the later was not feasible for direct PDMS replicating. Apart from PDMS, transferring the patterns to materials like hydrogels, sodium alginate, silk fibroin, epoxy glue, and chitosan were also explored. More importantly, the proposed WARM was conducted to fabricate silver nanowire functionalized, microstructure patterned-PDMS specimens, which were further used to construct a flexible electronic skin to monitor human physiological signals, highlighting the potential of WARM in developing biosensors and bioelectronics devices. Neither chemical modification nor special equipment was needed, especially in the favoring of a resource-limited experiment setting.

High-performance shale stabilizers are urgently required to address the concerns of wellbore instability when drilling troublesome shale wells. Herein, a novel paraffin wax microemulsion (PM) containing cationic surfactant was prepared and evaluated for shale formations. The shale stability performance of PM was studied using shale pressure penetration test, shale swelling and dispersion test. The shale stabilization mechanism of PM was investigated by surface tension, contact angle, surface free energy , capillary tube rise and SEM tests. The experimental findings showed that the pressure penetration time in shale after treatment with PM was extended from 13 to 107 min. And PM could decrease the shale swelling rate by 41.5%, and increase the recovery rate to 89.4%. PM exhibited better sealing and inhibition properties than that of commonly used shale stabilizers. The mechanism research revealed that the nano-droplets in PM could freely penetrate into shale pores and cracks of different sizes to form an effective sealing membrane. The water contact angle reached 91.4° after treatment with PM and the surface energy was significantly reduced, effectively inhibiting surface hydration. Through decreasing the surface tension and changing the wettability , the capillary force experienced a noticeable decrease with further enhanced inhibition of shale hydration. Therefore, the application of PM for shale stabilization exhibited promising potential, suggesting its possible effective utilization in shale drilling.

Membrane fouling is one of the major problems in microfiltration processes. Slippery liquid infused surface with outstanding antifouling property provides a new strategy to solve membrane fouling, however, the loss of the lubricant hinders its long-term application underwater. Here we demonstrate a thermo-responsive paraffin-wax-infused membrane, which accommodates both stability and slippery feature of lubricant by adjusting the temperature. The membrane is prepared by filling melted paraffin wax in the rough structures of the silica coatings on the polyethersulfone (PES) membrane surface through suction filtration. The paraffin layer can cover the whole membrane surface, including the micropore wall. The paraffin wax of solid phase leads to a hydrophobic surface, and shows highly stability on the membrane, which can withstand shear from spinning, flowing water or filtration. When paraffin wax turns to liquid phase at temperatures above its melting point, the membrane surface transforms to slippery state that can resist bovine serum albumin (BSA) and bacterial adhesion. In the cross-flow microfiltration, excellent fouling-release performance and durability are achieved by the temperature responsive switching between the hydrophobic and slippery state; after three cycles of fouling by BSA and cleaning with water of 60 °C, the membrane with optimum amount of paraffin wax shows much higher flux and flux recovery (>90%) compared to the control membrane without paraffin wax.

Biodegradable conductive composites are key materials or components for printable transient electronics that can be fabricated in a low-cost and high-efficiency manner, thereby boosting their wide applications in biomedical engineering, hardware security, and environmental-friendly electronics. Continuous efforts in this area still lie in the development of strategies for highly conductive, safe, and reliable biodegradable conductive composite materials and devices. This paper introduces molybdenum/wax composites for multimodally printable transient electronics in which multiple transience modes including dissolution-induced degradation and thermally triggered degradation are available. Systematic experiments demonstrate several advantages and unique properties of this material system, including solvent-free fabrication, self-sintering behavior, and long-term and high conductivity via accelerable self-sintering treatment and rehealing capabilities. Notably, the immersion of molybdenum/wax composites in phosphate buffer solution can provide both positive effects (accelerated self-sintering-dominated) and negative effects (degradation-dominated) on their electrical conductivities. Mechanism analyses reveal the basis for balancing the degradation and accelerated self-sintering processes. The presented demonstrations foreshadow opportunities of the developed molybdenum/wax composites in rehealable electronics, on-demand smart transient electronics with multiple transience modes, and many other related unusual applications.

Wax precipitation leads to destructive harms in the exploitation and transportation of petroleum. Solvent treatments can remove paraffin wax easily but the separation of solvent relying on distillation is admitted inefficient. Aiming at enhancing the separation and recovery performance of paraffin wax, CO 2 -responsive emulsion (SHS/W emulsion) based on switchable hydrophilicity solvents (SHS) is adopted. Since the paraffin wax is dissolved, emulsified, and dispersed by SHS/W emulsion, SHS/W emulsion exhibits better removal performance than SHS. The paraffin wax is recovered effectively upon introducing CO 2 , which attributes to the transformation of SHS from hydrophobic to hydrophilic state. Compared with the SHS system, the recovery of paraffin wax is improved obviously by introducing surfactant Span80. Owing to the deprotonation of SHS by bubbling N 2 and heating, 77.6% SHS is recycled after recovering paraffin wax. Here, the recycled SHS can be used to realize the removal of paraffin wax again. Thus, it is a promising and alternative strategy for realizing the sustainable and rapid removal of paraffin wax in the petroleum industry.

In order to reduce the mechanical sensitivity of ε-CL-20, wax and fluororubber polymers were used as coating materials and desensitizers to coat ε-CL-20 by the water suspension method. Through molecular dynamics calculations, fluorine rubber F2311, which had a good combination with ε-CL-20, was selected as the coating material and then ε-CL-20-based composite particles with double-layer structure were prepared. The contact angles of water, glycerin and diiodomethane as the testing liquids on the surface of F2311and wax were measured by a contact angle measuring instrument, and the thermodynamic parameters of ε-CL-20/F2311and the ε-CL-20/wax interface were calculated. ε-CL-20 before and after coating was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and the mechanical sensitivity analytical method. The results showed that F2311/wax had uniformly passivated on the surface of ε-CL-20, forming a dense and uniform protective film, and the CL-20 crystal form did not change after coating. The double-layer composite structure effectively reduces the sensitivity of ε-CL-20 and improves the thermal stability of ε-CL-20.Keywords:ε-CL-20;F2311/wax;mechanical sensitivity
