Mechanical Properties and Cavitation Erosion Behavior of CeO2-Modified Dual-scale WC-10Co-4Cr Coating Prepared by HVOF

Liu Ji,Chen Tongzhou,Duan Haitao,Yuan Chengqing,Bai Xiuqin

Cavitation erosion is a major failure mode of hydraulic turbine components. Coatings could be an effective solution to this problem. In this study, a CeO2-modified (1 wt%) dual-scale WC-10Co-4Cr powder (WC composed of 70 wt% micrometer WC (2.5 μm) and 30 wt% nanometer WC (100 ~ 200 nm)) was fabricated by agglomeration and sintering. CeO2-modified dual-scale WC-10Co-4Cr coatings (C-coating), dual-scale WC-10Co-4Cr coatings (D-coating), and micrometer WC-10Co-4Cr coatings (M-coating) were then deposited using a high-velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF). The mechanical properties and cavitation erosion behavior of these coatings were studied. The results showed that the CeO2-modified WC-10Co-4Cr coatings could effectively reduce decarburization in the powder preparation and HVOF process, the coatings having the highest WC retention rate. The C-coatings possessed a higher fracture strength (6.3 MPa m 1/2 ) and hardness (1348.2 HV0.3) than the D-coatings by more than 8.6 and 3.0%, respectively. The cavitation erosion resistance of the WC-10Co-4Cr coatings was affected by their microstructure and mechanical properties. The CeO2-modified coatings exhibited improved fracture toughness and hardness, reduced porosity, and, as a result, the C-coatings had the best cavitation erosion resistance.

Corrosion behaviour of Ni/WC-MoS2 composite coatings prepared by jet electrodeposition with different MoS2 doping concentrations

Anhua Ren,Min Kang,Xiuqing Fu

This study aimed to evaluate the corrosion behaviour of composite coatings with MoS 2 doping. Herein, the jet electrodeposition technique was used to prepare Ni/WC-MoS 2 composite coatings with different MoS 2 doping concentrations. Then, the composition, morphology, surface contact angle and so on, of coatings’ surfaces were characterised. The corrosion behaviour of the composite coatings with different nano-MoS 2 doping concentrations was investigated in 3.5 wt% NaCl. The corrosion mechanism of composite coatings in the corrosion process was also analysed. Results indicated that the MoS 2 -doped composite coatings had fewer surface micro-defects than Ni/WC coatings. Micro-nano structures such as ‘cauliflower’ and ‘nodules’ occurred on the coating’s surface with MoS 2 doping. As the MoS 2 doping concentration increased, the hydrophobic surface angle of the coating could be increased up to 132.5 °. After the corrosion test in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution, the surface of the composite coating without MoS 2 doping showed severe pitting corrosion. Therefore, the hydrophobicity allowed the Ni/WC-MoS 2 composite coating to offer excellent corrosion resistance with a predominantly uniform corrosion mechanism. The improved corrosion resistance of the composite coatings was attributed to the enhanced surface morphology and hydrophobicity . The more pronounced surface roughness and hydrophobicity helped the coating to trap air and form ‘air pockets’ when in contact with the corrosive medium, thereby blocking the corrosion process of Cl - . The Ni/WC-5 g/L MoS 2 composite coating had more positive corrosion potential ( Ecorr ) than other coatings, with a minimum corrosion current density ( I corr ) and corrosion rate ( CR ) of 0.0193 μA·cm −2 and 2.2446E-4 mm/a, respectively. Thus, the Ni/WC-MoS 2 composite coatings behaved with better corrosion resistance than Ni/WC composite coatings.

Regulation of the interfacial structure in CNTs/Cu composites by chemical vapor deposited WC to enhance mechanical properties and conductivity

Yuanzhe Li,Ran Long,Jingmei Tao,Xiaofeng Chen,Yichun Liu,Caiju Li,Zunyan Xu,Jianhong Yi

On the premise of ensuring the structural integrity of reinforcement, optimizing the microstructure of interfaces can be an effective method to improve the comprehensive performance of composites. In this study, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were pre-coated with ammonium metatungstate, and methane was utilized as carbon source for the creative synthesis of WC nanoparticles on intact CNTs (WC@CNTs) through chemical vapor deposition. The WC@CNTs/Cu composites were prepared by regulating the morphology and distribution of WC on CNTs through powder metallurgy. The results demonstrated a significant enhancement of dispersion uniformity of WC@CNTs within Cu matrix. A specific orientation relationship was observed between WC and CNTs as well as Cu, namely ( 111 ) Cu ∥ ( 001 ) WC and ( 100 ) WC ∥ ( 002 ) CNTs , indicating that the introduction of interfacial WC can achieve robust interfacial bonding. This not only effectively enhanced the load transfer capacity of WC@CNTs by restraining interfacial sliding, but also improved the fracture toughness of the composite through crack deflection and bifurcation. The tensile strength of the WC@CNTs/Cu composite reached 272 MPa, exhibiting a 24.8 % and 18.3 % increase compared to that of pure Cu and CNTs/Cu composite, while maintaining a fracture elongation of 29.4 %. Furthermore, the robust interface bonding can also enhance the electrical and thermal conductivity of the composites by reducing interface scattering. The highest electrical and thermal conductivity of WC@CNTs/Cu composites was 95.9 ± 0.7 %IACS and 390 ± 7 W/mK, respectively, which was 1.9 % and 17.8 % higher than that of CNTs/Cu composite. The method employed in this study can offer valuable insights for interface optimization of nanocarbon reinforced metal matrix composites.

Synthesis of ultrafine WC ceramic powders with reduced carbon content by liquid phase precursor method and the sintering behaviors

Xincan Gao,Zhulin Huang,Jieyan Yuan,Xinyang Li,Ming Li,Xiaoye Hu,Yufei Tang,Yue Li

Tungsten carbide (WC) plays a crucial role as a source material in the production of cemented carbides . However, achieving precise control over the size and purity of WC powders remains challenging. In this study, we present an organic liquid phase precursor method for synthesizing ultrafine, high-purity tungsten carbide powders through carbothermal reactions. Specifically, hydroquinone serves as the carbon source and undergoes substitution reactions to bond with tungsten, leading to the formation of a molecularly dispersed W–O–C network structure. To diminish the free carbon content in WC particles, ammonium metatungstate (AMT), an auxiliary tungsten source, is homogeneously dispersed within the organic precursor solution. This allows the contained W and O elements to react with the excess carbon content, thereby reducing the free carbon content in the resulting WC powders. Following calcination at 1150 °C, the WC powders attains an average particle size of approximately 200 nm and experiences a reduction in free carbon content from 5.7 wt% to 1.1 wt%. In this way, the mechanical properties are greatly improved, with the hardness of WC block increased from 2.5 GPa to 19.3 GPa as carbon is eliminated. This study demonstrates the utilization of AMT as an effective regulating reagent for reducing the carbon content in cemented carbides, thus exhibiting potential for producing high-purity and ultrafine carbide powders.

Microstructure and mechanical properties of HVOF-sprayed WC-based cermet composite coating reinforced by MWCNT@MXene

Zihan Zhang,Zheng Wei,Jiyue Qin,Jiangbo Cheng,Sheng Hong

In this work, a core-shell structure powder containing Ti 3 C 2 T x (MXene) and multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) was synthesized, and the corresponding composite coating was deposited onto the substrate by high-velocity oxygen-fuel (HVOF) spraying. The structural integrity of MWCNT was well-preserved. With the incorporation of MWCNT and MXene, porosity increased from 1.31 % to 1.73 % while H/E ratio enhanced. Compared to the pristine coatings, the reinforced coatings demonstrated superior performance in creep displacement and plastic deformation. This coating further exhibits strain rate sensitivity, with a tendency toward increased plastic deformation as the strain rate rises. The creep mechanism is ascribed to the synergistic effects of multiple deformation modes, including MXene stretching, MWCNT bridging, dislocation and grain boundary sliding.

Effect of WC content on microstructure and mechanical properties of (TiZrHfNbTaMo)C-15 wt.% Co ceramics

Xiao-Chun Deng,Xiao-Dong Kang,Guo-Hua Zhang

The (TiZrHfNbTaMo)C-15 wt.% Co ceramics with excellent comprehensive properties were successfully prepared by vacuum liquid phase sintering. The effects of WC content on the grain size, microstructure, and mechanical properties were investigated. The results showed that WC was dissolved into (TiZrHfNbTaMo)C phase to form a seven-component solid solution, and the independent WC phase disappeared. The addition of WC improved the wettability between the ceramic phase and the metal phase and promoted the densification of the ceramics. In addition, WC played a role in refining grains and inhibiting the grains growth to a certain extent. The comprehensive properties of ceramics were improved by solid solution strengthening and high entropy effect. When the WC content was 5 wt.%, the toughness reached the maximum of 9.41 ± 0.15 MPa·m 1/2 , and the hardness of the ceramic with 10 wt.% WC achieved the highest value of 18.18 ± 0.20 GPa.

W2N/WC composite nanofibers as an efficient electrocatalyst for photoelectrochemical hydrogen evolution

Yueyue Cao,Lanfang Wang,Moyan Chen,Xiaohong Xu

A tungsten-based electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction is vital for developing sustainable and clean energy sources. Herein, W2N/WC composite nanofibers were synthesized through electrospinning technology and simultaneous carbonization and N-doping at high temperature. The composite nanofiber has higher catalytic activity than any simple compound. It exhibits remarkable hydrogen evolution performance in acidic media with a low overpotential of −495 mV, at a current density of −50 mA cm−2. The excellent hydrogen evolution performance of the composite nanofiber could be attributed to the abundant active sites, strong light absorption and fast charge transfer. The method used in this work provides a new possibility for the fabrication of high-performance electrocatalysts rationally.

Effect of cavitation on corrosion behavior of HVOF-sprayed WC-10Co4Cr coating with post-sealing in artificial seawater

Ye Tian,Haijun Zhang,Xiuyong Chen,André McDonald,Shuangjie Wu,Tonghu Xiao,Hua Li

This study aims to further improve the cavitation-corrosion performances of high-velocity oxygen-fuel (HVOF) sprayed WC-10Co4Cr coatings by post-sealing treatment with epoxy resin using a vacuum impregnation method. Compared with the as-sprayed coatings with a porosity of 2.52%, the sealed WC-10Co4Cr coatings with a much lower porosity of 0.78% were successfully fabricated. The sealed coatings showed significantly enhanced corrosion and cavitation resistance tested in artificial seawater compared to those of the as-sprayed coatings. Further cavitation-corrosion testing under cavitation and quiescence conditions showed that the corrosion rate of both the as-sprayed coating and sealed coating was reduced under cavitation condition. Furthermore, a mechanism was suggested to illustrate the effect of cavitation on corrosion behavior of the coatings. The sealing treated WC-10Co4Cr coatings show encouraging promises as cavitation-corrosion resistance layers for marine structures.

Effects of Sintering Pressure and Co Content on the Microstructure and Mechanical Performance of WC–Co Cemented Carbides

Jinhu Ju,Dan Huang,Haitao Xu,Duo Dong,Jiangpeng Lou,Yuan Xu,Jiao Shi,Liu Zhu

The fabrication of WC-based cemented carbides faced challenges including inhomogeneous composition and grain coarsening. To solve these problems, WC–Co cemented carbides were fabricated via spark plasma sintering (SPS) using core–shell WC–Co powders prepared by an electroless plating method. The effects of sintering pressure and Co content on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the cemented carbides were investigated. The results showed that, with increasing sintering pressure, the relative density of the sintered samples was improved (98.4–99.6%) while the grains were coarsened (0.94–1.07 μm). The optimal properties (fracture toughness 11.11 MPa·m1/2, and hardness 2100.3 HV30) were obtained when sintered with a pressure of 20 MPa. Grain coarsening at higher pressure (30 MPa) reduced the toughness of the cemented carbides. When the Co content was increased from 3 wt.% to 8 wt.%, fracture toughness was improved while the hardness of the cemented carbides was reduced, attributed to the intrinsic high toughness and low hardness of the Co phase. The WC–8 wt.% Co cemented carbides exhibited optimized synergic mechanical performance (hardness of 1874.2 HV30 and fracture toughness of 13.77 MPa·m1/2). This work elucidated the relationship between the key sintering parameters (pressure and Co content) and the microstructure and mechanical properties of the cemented carbides. The achievements obtained provide a theoretical foundation for high-quality fabrication of the WC–Co cemented carbides.

Encapsulating dual-phased Mo2C-WC nanocrystals into ultrathin carbon nanosheet assemblies for efficient electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Xueting Zhang,Zhenye Zhu,Xiongyi Liang,Fei-Xiang Ma,Jiaheng Zhang,Yuanbo Tan,Zuchen Pan,Yiyang Bo,Chi-Man Lawrence Wu

Mo 2 C and WC are widely considered as promising electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) owing to their Pt-like electronic features. Herein, dual-phased Mo 2 C-WC nanocrystals, densely and uniformly confined in ultrathin carbon nanosheet assemblies (abbreviated as Mo 2 C-WC/NCAs), which are possible candidates for high-performance HER electrocatalysts, are fabricated through the in-situ pyrolysis of polymers containing Mo and W. When evaluated as HER electrocatalysts, Mo 2 C-WC/NCAs requires a small overpotential of ~126 mV to drive a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , and low Tafel slopes of 72 mV dec -1 and 59 mV dec -1 in acidic and alkaline media, respectively. In addition, the Mo 2 C-WC/NCAs exhibit robust catalytic stability up to 36 h. The introduction of dual-phased carbide heterostructures can modify the electronic structure and simultaneously facilitate the charge transfer of the catalysts, consistent with the density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This work highlights the in-situ construction of multi-phased hetero-metal carbide heterostructures for high-performance electrocatalysis.

From atomic bonding to heterointerfaces: Co2P/WC constructed by lacunary polyoxometalates induced strategy as efficient hydrogen evolution electrocatalysts at all pH values

Changle Yue,Na Liu,Yaping Li,Yang Liu,Fengyue Sun,Wenjing Bao,Yongxiao Tuo,Yuan Pan,Ping Jiang,Yan Zhou,Yukun Lu

Herein, a novel in-situ “atomic binding to heterointerface” strategy is proposed to obtain Co 2 P/ [email protected] /CNTs catalyst with abundant heterointerface between cobalt phosphide and tungsten carbide (Co 2 P/WC) by the polyoxometalates (POMs)-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) precursor. The natural quasi interfaces in K 10 [Co 4 (H 2 O) 2 (PW 9 O 34 ) 2 ] molecule crucially guide the abundant Co 2 P/WC heterointerfaces down to atomic level. Meanwhile, MOFs cages can effectively encapsulate nanosized POMs at molecular level to control the size and dispersion of Co 2 P/WC nanoparticle , while carbon nanotubes (CNTs) enhance conductivity at nanoscale level. The interfacial electronic modulation between Co 2 P and WC lowering the energy barrier of the rate determining step , thus Co 2 P/ [email protected] /CNTs showed reasonable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity and stability in all-pH media including sea water. This work provides a “bottom-up” synthetic strategy for confined heterostructures , thus offering the prospect for more efficient interfacial charge modulation.

Ultrafine cable-like WC/W2C heterojunction nanowires covered by graphitic carbon towards highly efficient electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Lu-Nan Zhang,Yuan-Yuan Ma,Zhong-Ling Lang,Yong-Hui Wang,Shifa Ullah Khan,Gang Yan,Hua-Qiao Tan,Hong-Ying Zang,Yang-guang Li

Developing highly active, durable and economical noble-metal-free electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) plays a crucial role in the future hydrogen economy. Herein, ultrafine cable-like WC/W2C heterojunction nanowires (NWs) covered by few-layer N-doped graphite-like carbon (labeled WC/W2C@C NWs) have been firstly accomplished via a simple two-step pyrolysis treatment of W18O49 NWs precursor, exhibiting tunable phase composition, excellent HER activity, fast kinetic metrics and remarkable stability along the entire pH range. With the optimized phase composition, WC/W2C@C NWs (WC : W2C ≈ 1 : 1.3) display the low overpotentials of 69 mV and 56 mV at the cathodic current density of 10 mA cm−2 and small Tafel slopes of 52 and 59 mV dec−1 in 0.5 M H2SO4 and 1 M KOH, respectively. DFT calculations and experimental results demonstrate that such prominent performance towards the HER was mainly attributed to abundant interfaces between WC and W2C phases in the cable-like heterojunction nanowires which may exert both the high HER activity of W2C and the excellent electrochemical stability and conductivity of WC. Furthermore, the one-dimensional (1D) nanowire morphology and graphite-like carbon shells also promote the conductivity of the whole electrocatalytic material. This work presents a new route to accomplish the morphology control, composition and electronic regulation so as to boost the HER performance of tungsten-carbide-based electrocatalysts, providing new guidance for exploring efficient noble-metal-free electrocatalysts.
