Nanobrick wall hybrid coating with super oxygen barrier properties were fabricated on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film using a quadlayer (QL) assembly of polyelectrolytes and nanoplateles. A quadlayer assembly consists of three repeat units of polyacrylic acid (PAA), poly (dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride) (PDDA) and layered α-zirconium phosphate (α-ZrP). PDDA with positive charges can assemble alternatively with both α-ZrP and PAA with negative charges to form nanobrick wall architectures on the surface of PET film via the electrostatic interaction. The lamellar structure of α-ZrP platelets and the dense QL assembly coating can greatly reduce the oxygen transmission rate (OTR) of PET film. Compared to pristine PET film, the OTR of PET (QL)19is reduced from 57 to 0.87 cc/m2/day. Moreover, even with 19 QLs coating, PET (QL)19composite film is still with an optical transparency higher than 90% and a haze lower than 10%. Therefore, the transparent PET (QL)ncomposite films with super oxygen barrier properties show great potential application in food packaging and flexible electronic packaging. Keywords:nanobrick;electrostatic interaction;oxygen barrier;packaging applications

In the marine environment, chloride ion is the main reason for the accelerated corrosion of carbon steel. Meanwhile, in zinc-containing coatings, the chloride-bearing corrosion product Zn 5 (OH) 8 Cl 2 ·H 2 O exhibits a theoretical volume expansion rate as high as 260%, which easily precipitates coating cracking. In this study, a two-dimensional zirconium phosphate-reduced graphene oxide (ZrP-rGO) nanomaterial with a highly negative potential surface was fabricated. Its two-dimensional architecture significantly prolongs the diffusion pathways of corrosive species. Moreover, the highly negatively charged surface generates strong electrostatic repulsion against chloride ions, effectively acting as a selective ionic barrier. This dual action suppresses the formation of high-volume-expansion zinc corrosion products (e.g., Zn₅(OH) 8 Cl 2 ·H 2 O), thereby preserving coating integrity and enabling zinc in low-zinc coatings to fully exert its chemical shielding effect. Specially, after 30 days of immersion, the coating with 1 wt% ZrP–rGO show a |Z| 0.01Hz of 3.32 × 10 8 Ω·cm 2 and a corrosion current density of 2.65 × 10 −10 A·cm −2 , as confirmed by EIS and Tafel analyses. These values are five orders of magnitude higher and four orders of magnitude lower than those of a pure 60 wt% zinc coating, significantly enhancing the coating's corrosion resistance. Salt spray testing demonstrates that the 1 wt% ZrP-rGO coating exhibits excellent corrosion resistance. This work provides new insights into improving the corrosion resistance of zinc coatings.

The introduction of poly(tannic acid) (PTA) and cerium ion [Ce(III)] on the surface of α-zirconium phosphate (α-ZrP) endowed the α-ZrP@PTA-Ce(III)/waterborne epoxy composite coating with enhanced corrosion protection and wear resistance performances. The successful preparation of α-ZrP@PTA-Ce(III) was confirmed through X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectra. PTA improved the compatibility between α-ZrP@PTA-Ce(III) and the waterborne epoxy resin due to the presence of organic groups from tannic acid. The wear resistance test indicated that the incorporation of α-ZrP@PTA-Ce(III) effectively reduced the coefficient of friction and the wear rate. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was used to analyze the corrosion protection performance of unbroken coatings and the self-healing ability of scratched coatings. The incorporation of α-ZrP@PTA-Ce(III) improved the protection performace distinctly. In addition, α-ZrP@PTA-Ce(III) endowed the composite coating with dual corrosion inhibition effects, originating from the PTA film, to prevent the penetration of corrosive media and a dense film that came from the Ce(III) cation. The waterborne epoxy system with enhanced corrosion and wear resistance in this paper broadens the application of α-ZrP.

Sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK)-based proton exchange membranes have emerged as promising alternatives to Nafion for proton exchange membrane fuel cells; however, their long-term mechanical and chemical stabilities remain key challenges for practical applications. In this work, a series of SPEEK composite membranes were fabricated by incorporating inorganic proton conductors zirconium phosphate (ZrP) and layered double hydroxides (LDHs), a novel functional nanomaterial, into a SPEEK matrix with a degree of sulfonation (DS) of 63%. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analyses confirmed the uniform dispersion of ZrP and LDHs within the polymer matrix and revealed the formation of continuous proton conduction pathways. The resulting composite membranes demonstrated enhanced mechanical strength and thermal stability. Swelling behavior and water uptake measurements showed that the incorporation of LDHs effectively suppressed dimensional changes in the membranes. Specifically, when the mass ratio of ZrP to LDHs was optimized at 8:2, the SPEEK-2 membrane exhibited a swelling degree of 15.7%, significantly lower than that of the pristine SPEEK membrane. Furthermore, under conditions of 80 °C and 100% relative humidity, the ionic conductivity of the SPEEK-2 membrane reached 217.9 mS cm − 1 , representing a 25.7% improvement over the unmodified membrane. These results demonstrate a viable strategy for enhancing the performance and durability of proton exchange membrane materials.
