A study of hydration reaction on the MgO-MgSO4-H2O system

Na Zhang,Anxin Liu,Ling Chen,Xiangyu Xue,Hongfa Yu,Mingfang Ba

This study systematically investigated the hydration process and phase evolution of MgO-MgSO₄-H₂O (M-M-H) systems with and without chemical additive at different hydration stages using X-ray diffraction (XRD), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), hydration heat measurement, and microstructural characterization. The results demonstrate that the formation of magnesium oxysulfate cement (MOSc) product phases is intrinsically governed by Mg²⁺ concentration in the liquid phase, which is co-regulated by both raw material molar ratios and phase regions. At low Mg²⁺ concentrations, the primary hydration products in chemical additive-free MOSc are 3Mg(OH)₂·MgSO₄·8H₂O (3–1–8 phase) and Mg(OH)₂. When Mg²⁺ concentration reaches a critical threshold, 5Mg(OH)₂·MgSO₄·7H₂O (5–1–7 phase) additionally forms in the system. Chemical additive significantly alter the hydration process by enhancing Mg²⁺ concentration and promoting MgO particle participation, ultimately shifting the dominant product phases to 5–1–7 and Mg(OH)₂. These findings provide deeper mechanistic understanding of hydration reactions in M-M-H systems and offer important guidelines for research and applications of chemically modified MOSc.

Effect of phosphorus-doping on ternesite: Structure, thermal stability and hydration

Fengyu Song,Didi Huo,Yanmin Wang,Dunlei Su,Xiao-Cun Liu

The successful synthesis of the solid solution Ca 5 (Si 1- x /2 O 4 ) 2 S 1- x /2 P x O 4 (C 5 S 2 S ̅ P x , x = 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20) was confirmed through analysis of X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive spectrometer data. Rietveld refinement revealed that the purity of ternesite can reach up to 99.42 % at a doping concentration of 5 %. Furthermore, changes in X-ray diffraction peaks and morphology suggest a shift in the preferred growth direction of crystallites as a result of the introduction of impurity element. The incorporation of P elements in C 5 S 2 S ̅ P x not only effectively reduces weight loss under high-temperature conditions but also elevates the temperature at which decomposition occurs. Isothermal calorimetry data indicates that C 5 S 2 S ̅ P x -CSA samples display higher cumulative heat release compared to C 5 S 2 S ̅ –CSA. Furthermore, the presence of C 5 S 2 S ̅ P 0.20 accelerates the hydration kinetics of CSA cement by hindering ettringite formation . Moreover, varying levels of phosphorus doping in C 5 S 2 S ̅ P x have resulted in enhanced compressive strength at various ages of CSA cement maturation.

Hydration kinetics and mechanism of cement pastes with PEGylated cellulose nanocrystals

Aofei Guo,Youqian Geng,Haowei Ma,Danying Gao,Hu Feng,Yunrui Zhang,Fangping Hao,Zhenyun Yu,Zhihui Sun

The low water-to-cement ratio cement-based materials represented by high-performance or ultra-high-performance concrete exhibit excellent mechanical and durability properties but suffer from poor flowability and insufficient and nonuniform hydration. Polyethylene glycol-grafted cellulose nanocrystal (PCNC) was synthesized by grafting polyethylene glycol (PEG) onto cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) and then was incorporated into cement paste to improve its flowability and hydration performance. A series of tests were conducted to analyze the flowability, compressive strength, and hydration behavior of cement paste with PCNC, with the hydration mechanism revealed. The results show that PCNC promotes more complete and uniform cement hydration through mechanisms including short-circuit diffusion, nucleation, and steric hindrance, resulting in improved flowability and compressive strength compared to pure and CNC-modified cement paste. The optimal PCNC dosage is 0.1 %, where the flowability and 28-day compressive strength increased by 10.73 % and 30.63 %, respectively. Finally, a mechanism model by which PCNC improves cement hydration was proposed.

Novel Deep Eutectic Solvents for Stabilizing Clay and Inhibiting Shale Hydration

Jingyuan Ma,Shaocong Pang,Wei Zhou,Boru Xia,Yuxiu An

The hydration and swelling of shale caused by water in water-based drilling fluids is one of the most important problems that causes wellbore instability. The development of high-performance shale inhibitors is an important prerequisite for ensuring the drilling of shale formations. In this study, four deep eutectic solvents (DESs) based on choline chloride (urea-DES, Gly-DES, Oxa-DES, and Cit-DES) were synthesized and introduced as promising shale inhibitors. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR) were used to characterize the structural information on DESs. The inhibition ability of DESs was evaluated by a bentonite inhibition test, a linear swelling test, and a settlement test. Compared with the traditional inhibitors, such as potassium chloride (KCl) and polyether amine, the four DESs can effectively inhibit the hydration and swelling of shale. Five wt % DESs can maintain low rheological parameters when the content of sodium bentonite (Na-bent) was as high as 40 wt %. Among them, Gly-DES not only exhibited the most efficient inhibition capability but also had the advantage of not affecting the basic performance of the drilling fluid. Inhibitory mechanism analysis showed that the electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding between DESs and sodium bentonite (Na-bent) are the most important factors to inhibit clay hydration. Besides, the reduction of the surface tension of the liquid by DESs effectively weakened the driving force for water to penetrate the Na-bent layer. Finally, it is important to note that, although DESs exhibited strong inhibitory capabilities, some DESs, such as Oxa-DES and Cit-DES, are prone to adversely affect the basic performance of drilling fluids. Therefore, a careful selection is required.

Effect of nano-SiO2 on early hydration of natural hydraulic lime

Kai Luo,Jun Li,Zhongyuan Lu,Jun Jiang,Yunhui Niu

Natural hydraulic lime (NHL) containing both hydraulic and air-hardening contents is of an ideal alternative binder for mortars used in interior decoration, cultural relics repair and historic buildings maintenance. In this study, early hydration and hardening properties of NHL2 with nano-SiO 2 (NS) were researched. Hydration exothermic rate firstly decreased within 5 h of hydration and then increased after 5 h of hydration with the increase of NS, which could be attributed to the C 2 S hydration and the additional pozzolanic reaction between Ca(OH) 2 and NS. It is noted that the initial hydration of C 2 S would be restrained by the increase content of NS in NHL2 due to the delayed exothermic peak occurring time within 5 h of hydration. A decreased porosity of hardened NHL pastes with the increase of NS at each curing age were observed, which might be also caused by the pozzolanic reaction between Ca(OH) 2 and NS. Meanwhile, an increased capacity for the pores about 50 nm and decreased capacity for the pores about 1 μm with the increase of NS were also observed. In addition, mechanical level of NHL could be improved from NHL2 to NHL3.5 when more than 2% NS were added.

Raman spectroscopy of alkali halide hydration: hydrogen bond relaxation and polarization

Yinyan Gong,Yong Zhou,Huacheng Wu,Danping Wu,Yongli Huang,Chang Q. Sun

The solute–solvent interaction of salts has a striking impact on various biological and industrial processes but its mechanism remains yet mysterious despite intensive studies since 1888 when Franz Hofmeister established the salt series. A combination of confocal Raman spectroscopy and contact angle measurements has enabled us to resolve the hydrogen bond relaxation (O:H―O, HB) and the associated charge polarization dynamics at different molecular site because of alkali halides hydration. Results show consistently that salt hydration softens the O:H phonon but stiffens H―O phonon cooperatively. The extent of HB relaxation and polarization is proportional to the electronegativity difference and ionic radius, following the order of Hofmeister series: X (R/η) = I (2.2/2.5) > Br (1.96/2.8) > Cl (1.81/3.0) > F (1.33/4.0) ≈ 0 for anions, and Y(R/η) = Na (0.98/0.9) > K (1.33/0.8) > Rb (1.49/0.8) > Cs (1.65/0.8) for cations. Observations suggest that ions create each an electric field that aligns, stretches, and polarizes water molecules, which relaxes the O:H―O bond cooperatively, depresses the molecular dynamics, and enhances the hydration shell viscosity and the skin stress. Exercises also demonstrate that Raman spectroscopy performs as a powerful tool for probing the molecular-site-resolved HB network relaxation dynamics in terms of phonon stiffness, molecular fluctuation dynamics, and phonon abundance transition under external stimulus. The role of sulfate ions in tricalcium aluminate hydration: New insights

Xin Liu,Pan Feng,Chen Lyu,Shaoxiong Ye

As a major mineral of Portland cement , the hydration of tricalcium aluminate (C 3 A) has a significant impact on various properties of cement-based materials. However, there is little consensus on its mechanism, especially the interaction between C 3 A and gypsum which usually co-exist in cement systems. Recent researches have shown that sulfate ions play an important role in the kinetics of C 3 A hydration, which may provide more promising alternatives on controlling cement hydration besides the present solution on adjusting gypsum contents . In this study, effects of different kinds of solid sulfates (gypsum, Na 2 SO 4 , MgSO 4 ) on the heat released during the early age of C 3 A hydration as well as hydration products were investigated first by isothermal calorimetry , SEM, XRD and thermal analysis. Retardation was observed in all the three systems (C 3 A-gypsum, C 3 A-Na 2 SO 4 and C 3 A-MgSO 4 ). But the duration of induction period varied with cations. Then barium nitrate (Ba(NO 3 ) 2 ) aiming to remove the sulfate ions was innovatively employed to highlight the role of sulfate ions. Interestingly, the renewed hydration of C 3 A occurred immediately after Ba(NO 3 ) 2 solution was added into the three systems with different amount of AFt remained. According to the characterization of hydration products, little monosulphoaluminate (s-AFm) was detected in the induction period of C 3 A-gypsum hydration and a large amount of h-AFm was found to cover the surface of C 3 A particles after adding Ba(NO 3 ) 2 solution. It is concluded that the coexistence of calcium and sulfate ions absorbed at C 3 A surface is more likely to dominate the retardation of C 3 A hydration in the presence of gypsum, rather than the alleged physical barrier mechanism caused by the precipitation of hydration products.

Probing the hydration friction of ionic interfaces at the atomic scale

Zibo Li,Qian Liu,Deliang Zhang,Yin Wang,Yuge Zhang,Qiang Li,Mingdong Dong

Despite the extensive studies conducted in exploring friction in the aqueous environment, the mechanism of hydration friction remains not well understood. Herein, we directly probed hydration friction on mica-electrolyte interfaces with different hydrated alkali cations through a combination of three-dimensional atomic force microscopy and friction force microscopy. The atomic scale imaging of the hydration layers at the mica surface in different electrolyte solutions clearly revealed a correlation between the alkali cations and the structure of the hydration layers. Our detailed analysis showed that the hydration force was much higher at high ionic concentrations than that at low concentrations. The hydration friction coefficient was found to follow the trend K+< Na+< Li+< Cs+, which contrasts with the Hofmeister series, indicating that the hydration friction depends not only on the hydration strength of the alkali cations but also on the arrangement of the alkali cations at the interface. The results of this study provide deep insights into the origins of hydration friction, with potential implications for the development of new boundary lubrication in aqueous media.

Deciphering the influence of superabsorbent polymers on cement hydration and portlandite formation

Han Wang,Zhiyong Liu,Fengjuan Wang,Jiawen Zhang,Le Guo,Yu Zhang,Yali Li,Junlin Lin,Zeyu Lu,Jinyang Jiang

Superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) have emerged as promising additives to regulate cement hydration via their intrinsic water absorption/desorption characteristics. This paper aims to investigate the influence of SAPs with different functional groups on the development of cement hydration and growth of calcium hydroxide (CH). The current experiment firstly uncovered the active control mechanism of CH in cement paste by SAPs, especially for the nucleation site and crystallization orientation. Specifically, the pores left behind SAPs after water release usually processed higher w/c ratio, Ca 2+ concentration and smaller crystallization pressure, which jointly triggered the in-situ nucleation and crystallization of CH along (0 0 1). However, the hydration degree of cement paste was reduced by 0.1∼4.4% with addition of SAPs, especially in the early stage, which was attributed to that less free water can be used for cement hydration due to the strong water absorption property of SAPs. These insights provide a valuable foundation for deploying SAPs in an active control strategy for CH growth position and crystal form in cement-based materials.

Effect of Nano-SiO2 on the Early Hydration of Alite-Sulphoaluminate Cement

Jinfeng Sun,Zhiqiang Xu,Weifeng Li,Xiaodong Shen

The impact of nano-SiO2on the early hydration properties of alite-sulphoaluminate (AC$A) cement was investigated with a fixed water to solid ratio (w/s) of one. Nano-SiO2was used in partial substitution of AC$A cement at zero, one and three wt %. Calorimetry, X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric/derivative thermogravimetric (TG/DTG), mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses were used to characterize the hydration and hydrates of the blended cement. The hydration of the AC$A cement was significantly promoted, resulting in an increase of the heat released with the addition of nano-SiO2. Phase development composition analysis showed that nano-SiO2had no effect on the type of crystalline hydration products of the AC$A cement. Moreover, nano-SiO2showed significant positive effects on pore refinement where the total porosity decreased by 54.09% at three days with the inclusion of 3% nano-SiO2. Finally, from the SEM observations, nano-SiO2was conducive to producing a denser microstructure than that of the control sample.Keywords:nano-SiO2;AC$A cement;early hydration;properties

Ba-deficient and K-doped Ba3MoNbO8.5: Hydration properties, electrical conduction, and stability

Lulu Jiang,Wenqi Lei,Zhiming Zhao,Kejia Chen,Chuangchang Lei,Donglin Han

Ba 3 MoNbO 8.5 is a recently emerging hexagonal perovskite-derivative oxide with high oxide ion conductivity. Mo and Nb-sites were commonly doped with acceptor dopants to regulate the transport properties. In this work, Ba-site was introduced with cation deficiency and doped with K. The tolerance of Ba-deficiency ( x ) in Ba 3‒ x MoNbO 8.5‒ x is within 0.03–0.06, and the solubility of K ( x ) in Ba 3‒ x K x MoNbO 8.5‒ x /2 is higher than 0.3. Although forming Ba-deficiency of x = 0.03 does not influence the conductivity significantly, doping K to x = 0.15 and 0.3 decreases the bulk conductivity obviously. Furthermore, even though these samples can be hydrated, H 2 O/D 2 O isotope effect was not observed, indicating that there is no or negligibly small proton conduction, and hydration even decreases the bulk conductivity. Interestingly, doping K reduces the difference in conductivity between the measurements in the dry and wet atmospheres. By annealing in a wet atmosphere for 90 h, the Ba 2.7 K 0.3 MoNbO 8.35 composition is unstable at 400°C, but shows good chemical stability at 600°C.

Influence of Calcium Formate on the Hydration of Tricalcium Aluminate–Gypsum Systems

Yimu Wang,Jing Geng,Tianyu Zhai

Calcium formate (CF) is a widely used, chloride-free organic admixture, and yet its effects on the hydration of tricalcium aluminate (C3A), the component in cement that hydrates the fastest, remain incompletely understood. This study investigates the mechanism by which CF influences the hydration products of the C3A-gypsum system with different gypsum contents, specifically focusing on ettringite (AFt), monosulfate (AFm), and hydrogarnet (C3AH6), through isothermal calorimetry, X-ray diffraction (XRD), temperature-modulated differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC), inductively coupled plasma (ICP), and thermodynamic phase composition calculation. The results demonstrate that CF accelerates the initial hydration of C3A and the formation of AFt. When the gypsum content is relatively high, the influence of CF on the conversion of AFt to AFm is not significant. However, with lower gypsum content (mass ratios of C3A to gypsum being 3∶1 and 2∶1), CF markedly inhibits the conversion of AFt to AFm while facilitating the generation of C3AH6. These findings enhance the theoretical understanding of additive interactions in cement and provide guidance for the development of noncorrosive concrete additives.
