Bismaleimide and biobased copolymer microspheres (BMPL) of bis[4-(4-maleimidoyloxy)phenyl]propane (BMIP) and limonene (LIM) with different compositions are synthesized via self-stabilizing precipitation copolymerization and applied as reactive modifiers of 2,2-bis(4-cyanatophenyl) propane (BADCy) resin. Due to the different reactivities of exo- and endocyclic vinyl groups in the LIM monomer, the content of the vinyl groups in the BMPL can be simply tuned by copolymerization temperature. There are some endocyclic double bonds of LIM in BMPL prepared at 75 °C but no observable endocyclic double bonds in BMPL prepared at 130 °C. The presence of LIM endocyclic double bonds in BMPL microspheres can effectively reduce the curing temperature of BADCy resin via the formation of chemical bonds between the BADCy matrix and BMPL microspheres but without expensing the heat resistance of the composites. The dielectric constant (ε) and dielectric loss (tan δ) of the BMPL/BADCy composite with the addition of 10 wt % of BMPL are 2.67 and 0.0034, respectively, at 106 Hz, which was much lower than those of pure BADCy (2.87, 0.0054). In addition, the maximum impact strength of the BMPL/BADCy composite at 10 wt % BMPL loading is 18.21 kJ/m2, which is 88.3% higher than that of pure BADCy. The BMPL/BADCy composite demonstrates low-k dielectric properties, high toughness, and thermal stability and has potential in the fields of electronic communication, aerospace, and aviation.

High-performance cyanate ester (CE) resins have attracted intensive interests due to low-k and heat resistant properties. However, the extreme high curing temperature and inherent brittleness severely limit their practical application. Herein, novel biobased poly(N-phenylmaleimide-co-limonene) (PML) microspheres were specially designed and synthesized by self-stabilized precipitation polymerization, which could simultaneously serve as effective curing agents and toughening modifiers for 2,2-bis(4-cyanatophenyl) propane (BADCy). The high density of unreacted endocyclic vinyl groups in PML could effectively react with BADCy, leading to lower curing temperature and good interfacial compatibility. Benefitting from both the weakly polarizable flexible chains and the highly crosslinked semi-interpenetrating network formed during the curing process, BADCy/PML resins exhibited highly enhanced toughness and reduced dielectric constant (ε). Specifically, the BADCy/PML resins showed minimum values of ε and dielectric loss of 2.61 and 0.0032 at 10 6 Hz, much lower than BADCy resins (2.88, 0.0052). More importantly, a maximum impact strength of 15.6 kJ/m 2 was achieved at 10 wt% loading of PML, which was 86% higher than BADCy resin. In summary, this work developed a novel strategy to simultaneously improve toughness and dielectric properties of CE resins using bio-based PML copolymer, which have great potential in the fields of electronics and information technology. Exploiting bio-based functional polymers to alleviate the scarcity of petroleum resources has garnered a great deal of interest. The ecofriendliness, plentiful supply, and sustainability of limonene (LM) make it an excellent option. Nevertheless, the self-inhibitory effect of exocyclic allyl and steric hindrance pose significant challenges to the effective synthesis of LM-based polymers. Herein, maleic anhydride (MAH)/vinyl acetate (VAc)/LM terpolymer (PMVLM) microsphere with a controllable size (about 0.68–1.83 μm) and composition was effectively generated by manipulating polymerization parameters via self-stabilized precipitation (2SP) technique, wherein the rise of MAH feed percentage was beneficial for endocyclic double bonds of LM participating in copolymerization and the molar percentage of LM in PMVLM was controlled from 1 to 26%. Besides, PMVLM exhibited excellent killing efficiency against E. coli and the inhibition percentage of the copolymer with 2 mg/mL to 70%. Combined with the merits of VAc, LM, and MAH, PMVLM may also be employed as biomedical materials, biodegradable plastics, eco-friendly coatings, and packaging materials.

The formation of inclusion complexes (ICs) between V-type starch and flavors is traditionally conducted in an aqueous system. In this study, limonene was solid encapsulated into V6-starch under ambient pressure (AP) and high hydrostatic pressure (HHP). The maximum loading capacity reached 639.0 mg/g after HHP treatment, and the highest encapsulation efficiency was 79.9 %. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) results showed that the ordered structure of V6-starch was ameliorated with limonene, which avoided the reduction of the space between adjacent helices within V6-starch generated by HHP treatment. Notably, HHP treatment may force molecular permeation of limonene from amorphous regions into inter-crystalline amorphous regions and crystalline regions as the Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) patterns indicated, leading to better controlled-release behavior. Thermogravimetry analysis (TGA) revealed that the solid encapsulation of V-type starch improved the thermal stability of limonene. Further, the release kinetics study showed that a complex prepared with a mass ratio of 2:1 under HHP treatment sustainably released limonene over 96 h and exhibited a preferable antimicrobial effect, which could extend the shelf life of strawberries.

Pickering emulsions (PEs) have been regarded as an effective approach to sustaining and preserving the bioactivities of essential oils. The aim of this research is to prepare a PE stabilized by chitosan/alginate nanoparticles (CS-SA NPs) for the encapsulation and stabilization of D-limonene. In this work, the influence of calcium ions (Ca2+) on the morphology and interaction of nanoparticles was studied, and then the preparation technology of CS-SA/Ca2+NPs was optimized. The results showed that the presence of Ca2+reduced the size of the nanoparticles and made them assume a spherical structure. In addition, under the conditions of 0.2 mg/mL CaCl2, 0.6 mg/mL SA, and 0.4 mg/mL CS, the CS-SA/Ca2+NPs had the smallest size (274 ± 2.51 nm) and high stability (−49 ± 0.69 mV). Secondly, the PE was prepared by emulsifying D-limonene with CS-SA/Ca2+NPs, and the NP concentrations and homogenization speeds were optimized. The results showed that the small droplet size PE could be prepared with 2 mg/mL NP and a homogenization speed of 20,000 r/min, and it had excellent antibacterial and antioxidant activities. Most importantly, the emulsion showed higher activity, higher resistance to ultraviolet (UV) and a higher temperature than free D-limonene. This research provides a feasible solution for the encapsulation, protection and delivery of essential oils. Keywords:homogenization speed;thermal stability;ultraviolet stability;antibacterial activity;antioxidant activity

In order to find and develop new botanical pesticides against storage pests, components of the essential oil (EO) from Zanthoxylum bungeanum were identified by GC-MS and their insecticidal activity against the stored product pests were studied. The EO was obtained by steam distillation. Results showed that EO was rich in limonene (23.67), linalool (21.76) and linalyl anthranilate (10.87). In contact assays, linalool exhibited strongest toxicity to red flour beetle adult (LD50 = 17.06 μg/adult) and larvae (LD50 = 16.42 μg/larvae), and linalool was the most active one against the Lasioderma serricorne (LD50 = 15.36 μg/larvae). Then limonene and linalool showed different levels of fumigant activities against the two insect species. Synergism effect existed in the proportion of contact assays against Tribolium castaneum adults, and additive was observed in the proportion of 7:1 against T. castaneum larvae. This work provides important information for the development and utilization of Z. bungeanum and suggests that the EO of Z. bungeanum has the potential to serve as bio-insecticides for controlling pest damage in stored products.

Introduction Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is a highly prevalent chronic liver disorder characterized by intrahepatic lipid accumulation, oxidative stress, and inflammatory responses, underscoring the urgent need for effective therapeutic strategies. D-limonene, a cyclic monoterpenoid primarily derived from citrus fruits, possesses well-documented antioxidant, anti-fibrotic, and wound-healing properties. However, its therapeutic potential in MASLD remains largely unexplored. Methods To evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of D-limonene, a rat model of MASLD was established using a high-fat diet (HFD). An integrated approach combining metabolomics, transcriptomics, and network analysis was employed to identify key signaling pathways and molecular targets. The expression levels of candidate targets were validated by RT-qPCR and Western blotting. Molecular docking simulations were performed to predict the binding affinity between D-limonene and the target proteins. Furthermore, a cellular thermal shift assay (CETSA) was conducted to confirm direct binding and protein stabilization. In parallel, cellular experiments using BRL-3A and HepG2 cells were carried out to assess the effect of D-limonene on lipid accumulation. Results D-limonene treatment significantly ameliorated liver injury, reduced excessive lipid deposition, attenuated inflammation, and suppressed oxidative stress in HFD-induced rats. Integrated multi-omics and network analyses identified the PPAR signaling pathway as the core pathway mediating the regulatory effects of D-limonene on lipid metabolism, with PPARγ and SCD-1 pinpointed as key downstream targets. RT-qPCR and Western blot analyses confirmed that D-limonene significantly downregulated the expression of both PPARγ and SCD-1. Molecular docking simulations revealed stable binding of D-limonene to PPARγ and SCD-1. Importantly, CETSA further demonstrated that D-limonene directly binds to and stabilizes these two proteins. Consistently, cellular assays showed that D-limonene significantly reduced lipid accumulation in BRL-3A and HepG2 cells by inhibiting the PPARγ/SCD-1 axis. Conclusion Collectively, these findings suggest that D-limonene alleviates HFD-induced MASLD, and its protective effects may be mediated, at least in part, through inhibition of the PPARγ/SCD-1 axis. This study provides preliminary evidence supporting the potential development of D-limonene as a targeted therapeutic agent for MASLD. Further studies are warranted to validate these findings and elucidate additional underlying mechanisms.

Non-invasive early detection of liver disease via breath analysis is a long-sought, yet challenging, target in sensor research. High humidity, complex chemical composition, and substantial inter-individual differences in exhaled breath significantly complicate the breath analysis for liver disease diagnosis. In this work, hierarchical WO 3 polyhedrons were successfully prepared via a simple hydrothermal method. The as-prepared WO 3 material showed the highest ever-reported response (268.2) to 10 ppm limonene (a critical biomarker for liver diseases) at 100°C, with a remarkable detection limit of 10 ppb. Various characterization techniques, including O 2 -TPD, XPS, and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), were employed to thoroughly analyze the sensing mechanism of WO 3 toward limonene. Based on a comprehensive understanding of the entire sensing process, a robust few samples with high feature dimensionality orient machine learning algorithm was used to assist the sensor in decoding response features specific to limonene from complex breath analysis response singles, thereby achieving 99.9% correct classification rate for distinguishing exhaled signals from liver disease patients and healthy controls in 200 independent cross-validation tests. This work presents the first successful integration of machine learning with a highly sensitive WO 3 -based limonene sensor, offering significant potential for non-invasive, real-time, and cost-effective early detection of liver diseases.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by plants provide essential insights into plant health, quality, and environmental stressors. Among these, D -limonene emissions fluctuate with agricultural stress and fruit quality and have emerged as a potential biomarker for monitoring plant condition. However, developing a portable, low-power, and user-friendly sensor for D -limonene detection in field conditions remains challenging. In this study, we report a novel colorimetric biosensor that employs a mild one-pot synthesis method to immobilize acetylcholinesterase (AChE) on a zinc-based metal–organic framework (AChE@Zn-MOF) and utilizes phenolphthalein as a pH indicator for highly sensitive D -limonene detection. The biosensor retains enzymatic activity comparable to free AChE while exhibiting enhanced stability across a range of environmental conditions. D -limonene inhibits AChE activity, disrupting acetylcholine hydrolysis and inducing a detectable pH shift, resulting in a visual color change. To enhance field practicality, the biosensor was integrated into commercial pH test strips coated with an agarose gel membrane to improve moisture retention and gas absorption. Coupled with smartphone-assisted image processing, the system enables detection of D -limonene at concentrations as low as 1 ppm and allows visualization of its release during mango post-harvest storage and citrus pest infestations. This approach establishes a foundation for portable, colorimetric smart sensing technologies in agriculture, facilitating real-time monitoring of VOCs like D -limonene in the field.

Carvol and carvone are oxidation products from the natural product limonene. They are important raw materials for the flavours and fragrances industry and also act as pharmaceutical active ingredients. Orange waste peels possibly represent an attractive source for limonene, but studies on valorizing orange peel wastes are rare. In this study, we report a new enzymatic cascade system for the in-situ conversion of limonene from orange peel into valued-added carvol and carvone. The use of deep eutectic solvents (DES) allows for efficient in-situ extraction of limonene from waste orange peels. We propose a dual function use of DES as solvent for the extraction and the biocatalytic oxidation of limonene as well as cosubstrate to promote the oxidation reaction. Using ChCl-Pro-H 2 O DES for the extraction of limonene from waste orange peels, approximately 17 milligrams of limonene per gram of orange peel was achieved at 40°C for 24 h. Then, with ChCl-Pro-H 2 O DES as the extractant and reaction medium, a cascade reaction system of choline oxidase (ChOx) and unspecific peroxygenase (UPO) was established to catalyse the conversion of limonene into carvol and carvone. The concentration of the final products was up to about 1.6 mmol L −1 . This study showed a biocatalytic transformation pathway and provides technical support for the high-value utilization of waste in orange peel.

Background/Objectives: Chronic alcohol overconsumption triggers alcohol liver injury, and therapeutic strategies targeting alcohol-triggered oxidative stress and hepatic inflammatory responses represent potential approaches to ameliorating alcohol-related hepatotoxicity. This study aimed to determine the hepatoprotective activity of finger citron essential oil (FCEO) in alcoholic liver disease (ALD)-afflicted rats and explore its underlying mechanisms. In order to identify the effective components, we compared the effects of FCEO and D-limonene.Methods: The regulatory effects of FCEO on metabolic enzymes were systematically evaluated through in vitro experiments. In vivo studies were conducted to investigate and compare the hepatoprotective effects of FCEO and D-limonene. Staining methods, assay kits, and Western Blot were used to determine the roles of FCEO and D-limonene in the ALD rats. Results: We found that FCEO downregulated phase I metabolic enzymes and upregulated phase II metabolic enzymes in Buffalo Rat Liver-3A (BRL-3A) cells. FCEO and/or D-limonene intervention reduced transaminase levels in ALD rats and effectively alleviated inflammatory cell infiltration and lipid droplet accumulation in their liver tissue. Additionally, FCEO and D-limonene played a regulatory role in oxidative stress and inflammation-related pathways such as the MAPK/Nrf2 and NF-κB/AMPK pathways. FCEO was superior to D-limonene as an antioxidant in alleviating alcoholic liver injury. Conclusions: This study revealed the alleviative effects and mechanisms of FCEO on alcoholic liver injury, demonstrating better efficacy compared to its monomer, thus providing a strategy for the development and utilization of finger citron resources.

This study aimed to assess the protective effects of the main components of Zanthoxylum bungeanum Maxim. essential oil (ZBMEO) on the characteristics of rabbit meat myofibrillar protein (MP) under MDA (malondialdehyde) induced oxidation. The MP suspensions were mixed with various concentrations (5 mM, 25 mM and 50 mM) of linalool, limonene, sabinene under MDA-induced oxidation. The retained MDA contents were determined, and the thermal stability and structure of rabbit meat myofibrillar protein were analyzed. Linalool, limonene and sabinene can prevent MDA from binding to MP effectively. The addition of linalool, limonene and sabinene led to the increase in the sulfhydryl and free amine contents, and the decrease in the carbonyl content and surface hydrophobicity compared to control MP. Also, the addition had protective effects on maintaining the secondary structure and morphology of MP under MDA-induced oxidation. The Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and SDS-PAGE analysis indicated that linalool, limonene, sabinene had an obvious protective effect on MHC and actin. The above results suggest that linalool, limonene and sabinene could reduce the oxidative damage of MDA to MP, which might have the potential in protecting the structure and physicochemical properties of the protein in foods .
