Mao-based solid-like slippery composite coating with superior corrosion resistance and robust machinery performance upon magnesium-lithium alloy LA81

Bingzhi Li,Yibo Ouyang,Enyu Guo,Zhihao Zhou,Xinran Hou,Huijun Kang,Zongning Chen,Xiao-Bo Chen,Tongmin Wang

Slippery liquid-infused porous surface exhibits a great potential for corrosion management with super repulsive water properties, whilst their poor adhesion to underlying materials and durability of lubricants remains a challenge. In this work, a micro-arc oxidation (MAO)-based solid-like slippery composite coating (SSC) is developed upon Mg-Li alloy LA81 by combining mechanical pinning effects of MAO and super repulsive water performance of SSC, which maximizes adhesion strength, water repulsion and sustainable corrosion protection. The SSC coatings exhibit liquid-to-solid transition under the curing effect of epoxy resin. Efficient sealing of the MAO layer is yielded through high fluidity of the liquid phase of SSC. Cured SSC can further strengthen the interface bonding with respect to underlying MAO layer, and significantly alleviate lubricant loss.

Fabricate of superhydrophobic POTS/ZIF-8@MAO composite coating on TC4 titanium alloy with anti-fouling and corrosion resistance properties

Xiaoyan Guo,Lei Wu,Qiuyan Ye,Yingjie Lv,Nan Wang,Jiaqiao Li,Jiaxu Zhang,Yiku Xu,Yongnan Chen,Yiming Chen

Although micro-arc oxidation (MAO) coatings improve the mechanical properties of titanium alloys, their porous structural defects tend to act as pathways for corrosive agents and as adhesion sites for contaminants. In this study, a superhydrophobic coating was developed on TC-4 titanium alloy by combining in-situ hydrothermal synthesis of ZIF-8 with POTS surface modification, thereby forming a rough surface with low surface energy. The POTS/ZIF-8@MAO composite coating exhibits strong adhesion to the substrate through both physical and chemical bonding. Consequently, it demonstrates excellent chemical and thermal stability, maintaining a water contact angle (WCA) of 156.53° ±2.47° and a sliding angle (SA) of 6.32° ±1.16° even under extreme conditions. Due to its low water adhesion, the coating demonstrates significant self-cleaning ability against both solid and liquid contaminants. Electrochemical analysis reveals that it improves corrosion inhibition by up to 99% compared to pristine MAO-treated titanium alloy, providing an effective protective barrier for the substrate. This work proposes a promising strategy that may potentially expand the application scope of titanium alloys.

An AIE-active NIR Ratiometric probe based on “ICT + ESIPT” mechanism for mitochondrial MAO imaging: Distinguishing cells and visualizing DILI

Ting Cao,Mengjin Li,Hong Ma,Zhefeng Fan

A novel AIE-1 probe integrates “ICT + ESIPT+AIE” tri-modal for ratiometric NIR fluorescence imaging of MAO activity. • AIE-1 exhibits wide linear range (0–140 μg/mL), high sensitivity (LOD 0.23 μg/mL), and excellent selectivity. • AIE-1 semi-quantitatively distinguishes MAO activity in normal/cancer cells and evaluates cellular inhibitor efficacy. • Successful real-time visualization of upregulated MAO activity is achieved in a DILI model. Given the crucial role of monoamine oxidase (MAO) in maintaining amine homeostasis and liver pathology, real-time in situ monitoring of its activity is crucial for elucidating the mechanism of drug-induced liver injury (DILI). This study designed and synthesized a ratio type fluorescent probe AIE-1 based on the “ICT + ESIPT” mechanism, which integrates aggregation induced luminescence (AIE), near-infrared (NIR) emission, and mitochondrial targeting. The probe AIE-1 utilizes MAO catalyzed oxidative deamination reaction to trigger intramolecular charge transfer and excited state proton transfer processes, producing significant ratiometric fluorescence signals at 518 nm and 712 nm. The sensing mechanism was thoroughly validated by 1 H NMR titration, DFT calculations of HOMO-LUMO energy gaps, and solvent-polarity-dependent experiments, collectively confirming the occurrence of both ICT and ESIPT processes. Spectral experiments show that its detection of MAO has a wide linear range (0–140 μg/mL), high sensitivity (0.23 μg/mL), strong selectivity, and anti-interference ability. Cell imaging experiments have confirmed that AIE-1 can successfully semi quantitatively distinguish the differences in MAOs activity between normal liver cells and liver cancer cells, and evaluate the effectiveness of inhibitors. In the drug-induced liver injury model, AIE-1 successfully achieved real-time visualization monitoring of upregulation of MAO activity in vivo with sensitivity and specificity. This probe provides a novel and efficient tool for studying the role of MAO in pathological processes such as DILI.

Design, synthesis and biological evaluation of donepezil-safinamide hybrids as dual AChE and MAO-B inhibitor for Alzheimer’s disease treatment

Wei Li,Yan Guo,Xiaoli Wang,Chunyan Yang,Jiang Zhu,Zhongcheng Cao

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) still lacks therapies that definitively halt its progression. Dual AChE/MAO-B inhibitors offer a promising strategy to address both symptoms and pathology. Here, we designed and synthesised a series of donepezil-safinamide hybrids. The optimised compound 28c was identified as a potent inhibitor of AChE (IC50 = 1.70 μM) and MAO-B (IC50 = 0.18 μM). Mechanistic studies indicated that 28c acts as a reversible mixed-type inhibitor of AChE and a competitive reversible inhibitor of MAO-B. Molecular docking and molecular dynamic simulations revealed that 28c could strongly and stably bind to MAO-B and AChE mainly through van der Waals interactions. Moreover, compound 28c demonstrated effective blood-brain barrier penetration, exhibited suitable stability in mouse plasma and brain homogenate, and showed a favourable safety profile both in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, 28c could attenuate AD-related symptoms and exert hippocampal neuroprotection effect in vivo, highlighting its promise as an anti-AD candidate.

Construction and Performance Optimization of a Multifunctional CHP-Ti-MAO Composite Coating: Antibacterial Activity, Controlled Drug Release, and Corrosion Resistance

Liting Mu,Yiqi Lian,Shiyu Zheng,Shuo Chang,Ximeng Li,Changhai Sun,Hongbin Qiu

Titanium and its alloys are widely used in orthopedics because of their excellent mechanical properties and biocompatibility; however, their bioinert surface results in sluggish osseointegration and renders implants susceptible to bacterial infection. This study innovatively constructed a “CHP-Ti-MAO” composite coating, which aims to simultaneously improve early osseointegration and antibacterial performance. CHP micron coatings coated with hydroxyapatite (HA) and curcumin (Cur) at different PLGA concentrations (50%, 100%, and 150%) were deposited on the basis of calcium–phosphorus ceramic coatings prepared by micro-arc oxidation (MAO) following the emulsification-solvent volatilization method. It was found that increasing the concentration of PLGA can increase the particle size of the coating, enhance the hydrophilicity, and significantly improve the sustained release performance of the drug. Among them, the 100% PLGA concentration group performed the best: the drug-release half-life reached 75 h, and the corrosion current density was the lowest (9.5 × 10−9A/cm2), showing the best corrosion resistance. This group of coatings has a strong and long-term antibacterial effect on Escherichia coli, with an antibacterial rate of more than 95% at 24 h and more than 99% by day 17. The hemolysis rate of all coatings was lower than 5%, indicating good biocompatibility. This study confirmed that 100% CHP-Ti-MAO composite coating successfully solved the limitations of excessive pore size and insufficient antibacterial persistence of an MAO layer and also had excellent slow-release, corrosion resistance, and high-efficiency antibacterial capabilities, which provided an important basis for the development of a new generation of multifunctional titanium-based implants.

Superhydrophobic surface on MAO-processed AZ31B alloy with zinc phosphate nanoflower arrays for excellent corrosion resistance in salt and acidic environments

Chao Yang,Chenyu Wang,Xuanzi Zhao,Zhao Shen,Min Wen,ChaoChao Zhao,Liyuan Sheng,Yaoguang Wang,Daokui Xu,Yufeng Zheng,Paul K. Chu,Xiaoqin Zeng

Corrosion caused by the active chemical properties of magnesium (Mg) alloys seriously restricts their applications in aerospace, transportation, biomedicine, and other fields. Although micro-arc oxidation (MAO) coatings can provide some corrosion protection for Mg alloys, their microporous structure is prone to localized corrosion. Herein, nanoflower-shaped zinc phosphate is prepared and hydrophobically modified. The commercial glue is used to bond the nanoflower-shaped zinc phosphate particle arrays to the MAO-coated AZ31B alloy substrate to produce a two-layer composite coating with superhydrophobic properties. The composite coating exhibits obvious repulsive effects in salt and acidic solutions as indicated by contact angles of 160° and 156°, respectively. The composite coating has improved electrochemical properties and immersion corrosion in both the salt and acidic solutions compared to the substrate and MAO-coated sample. Moreover, the composite coating retains the long-term superhydrophobic effects under different conditions such as immersion in salt and acidic solutions, water scouring, and sunlight exposure, which well indicates commercial applications.

CoxFe3-xO4@SDBS@KH-560 nanocontainers-engineered MAO coatings on AZ31B magnesium alloy: Microstructure regulation, corrosion protection and self-healing behavior

Xiuzhou Lin,Long He,Lan Luo,Qiaoling Yang,Baojie Dou,Xinmiao Jiang,Yan Wang,Xinyue Liang

Hollow Co x Fe 3-x O 4 nanocontainers were loaded with SDBS and sealed by KH-560. • Nanocontainers participated in MAO growth and regulated discharge defects. • The specific wear rate of MAO-1 decreased by 95.8% compared with MAO-0. • MAO-1 showed the best corrosion resistance with superior electrochemical properties. • SVET confirmed corrosion-responsive inhibitor release and self-healing protection. The intrinsic porosity and microcracks inherent to micro-arc oxidation (MAO) coatings create preferential diffusion paths for corrosive species, thereby limiting the long-term corrosion protection of magnesium alloys. In this work, hollow mesoporous Co x Fe 3-x O 4 nanocontainers were synthesized via a cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) assisted solvothermal method, loaded with sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS) as a corrosion inhibitor, sealed with KH-560 silane coupling agent, and subsequently incorporated into MAO coatings on AZ31B magnesium alloy. The nanocontainers participated in coating formation through pore filling and co-solidification with molten oxides. Moderate addition refined discharge pores and improved coating integrity, whereas excessive addition caused particle agglomeration and inhomogeneity. At the optimal concentration of 1   g·L -1 , MAO-1 exhibited the greatest coating thickness (37.96 μm). MAO-1 exhibited the highest coating resistance ( R c = 2.40×10 7 Ω·cm 2 ) and charge-transfer resistance ( R ct =1.77×10 6 Ω·cm 2 ), together with the lowest corrosion current density (2.85×10 -9   A·cm -2 ). Its specific wear rate was reduced to 2.56×10 −6 mm 3 ·N -1 ·m -1 , which is 95.8% lower than that of MAO-0. Scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET) measurements further confirmed corrosion-responsive self-healing behavior in MAO-1: after 12   h of immersion, the maximum local potential-difference signal decreased from 0.0105 to 0.0042   mV, representing a 66.1% reduction compared to MAO-0. The progressive attenuation of local electrochemical activity indicates that the release, migration, and interfacial adsorption of SDBS effectively suppress localized anodic dissolution and partially restore protection at damaged regions. Overall, the Co x Fe 3-x O 4 @SDBS@KH-560 nanocontainers synergistically combine barrier reinforcement with inhibitor-mediated active protection, thereby enhancing the corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and self-healing capability of the MAO coating.

Model-guided targeted synthesis and structural regulation of polyethylene via α-diimine nickel/MAO-catalyzed ethylene homopolymerization in a microflow system

Zeen Zhang,Tiantian Chu,Yangcheng Lu

Revealed Al/Ni and catalyst concentration effects on polymer structure. • Clarified how propagation, chain walking, and transfer determine conversion, branching degree and molecular weight. • Developed a mechanism-inspired model for polyethylene property prediction. • Enabled inverse design for target-oriented polyethylene synthesis. Ethylene homopolymerization catalyzed by an α-diimine nickel/MAO system was investigated in toluene using a microflow platform. The effects of catalyst concentration and Al/Ni ratio on polymerization behavior and polymer structure were systematically examined. Increasing catalyst concentration enhanced the overall polymerization capability but also intensified chain-transfer effects, while the Al/Ni ratio exhibited an optimal window governed by the balance between catalyst activation and activity suppression at excessive MAO levels. Based on the chain-walking mechanism, polymer structure formation was interpreted as a dynamic competition among chain propagation, chain walking, and chain transfer, which mainly determined conversion, branching degree, and molecular weight. A mechanism-inspired apparent model was established by combining variable transformations, a third-order polynomial response surface, and Ridge regularization, enabling simultaneous prediction of key polymer properties. Furthermore, an inverse design model was developed for identifying feasible reaction conditions toward target-oriented polyethylene synthesis. Enhancing corrosion resistance of MAO coatings on Al alloy LY12 through in situ co-doping with zinc phosphate and cerium phosphate

Chao Yang,Tao Ying,Aihui Huang,Jian Huang,Pinghu Chen,Paul K. Chu,Xiaoqin Zeng

Corrosion of aluminum (Al) alloys during service limits many applications. Micro-arc oxidation (MAO) coatings can enhance corrosion resistance, but porous defects in the films undermine their effectiveness. Here, by mixing a phosphate electrolyte with soluble Zn and Ce salts, zinc phosphate and cerium phosphate co-doped MAO corrosion-resistant coating is prepared on Al alloy LY12. Zinc phosphate and cerium phosphate are incorporated in situ to form an amorphous encapsulated nanocrystalline structure. During long-term corrosion, Zn 2+ is released and deposited as corrosion products Zn(OH) 2 to cover weak corrosion micro-regions in the coating. Simultaneously, Ce 3+ released from MAO coating co-doped with zinc phosphate/cerium phosphate forms Zn(OH) 2 /Ce(OH) 3 due to the small solubility product K sp to further enhance corrosion resistance. Compared to pristine Al alloy, corrosion potential increases from -1.306 to -0.819 V SCE , and corrosion current density decreases by 4 orders of magnitude from 2.6 × 10 −6 to 2.5 × 10 −10 A·cm −2 . Co-doped MAO coating significantly enhances corrosion resistance of Al alloy LY12 and shows great potential for a wide range of applications.

Enhanced corrosion protection for MAO coating on magnesium alloy by the synergism of LDH doping with deposition of 8HQ inhibitor film

Runjia Liu,Dan Xu,Yan Liu,Liang Wu,Qiwen Yong,Zhi-Hui Xie

The inherent micropores of micro-arc oxidation (MAO) coatings on magnesium alloy often cause poor long-term corrosion resistance . Herein, a low-porosity and high corrosion-resistant 8HQ/LDH/MAO composite coating , comprising a layered double hydroxide (LDH)-doped MAO primer and a top layer of 8-hydroxyquinoline (8HQ) inhibitor film, was deposited onto the magnesium alloy surface. Characterizations such as high-resolution field-emission transmission electron microscopy were performed to observe the synthesized nanoparticles’ morphology, size, composition, and structure. Results confirmed the successful synthesis of nitrate ion intercalated MgAl-LDH nanosheets and demonstrated the increase in thickness and denseness of the MAO coating after LDH doping. Based on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and Tafel curves, the corrosion current density ( j corr ) of the newly fabricated 8HQ/LDH/MAO composite coating was reduced by about three orders of magnitude. The low-frequency impedance modulus (| Z | ƒ=0.1 Hz ) increased by nearly four orders of magnitude compared with that of bare Mg alloy. After 14 days of exposure to the corrosive electrolyte, the composite coating maintained a low j corr , showing significantly enhanced corrosion resistance compared with single MAO coating. These findings demonstrated the synergism of LDH doping with 8HQ sealing to enhance the corrosion protection of MAO coating on magnesium alloy.

Rational design, synthesis and biological evaluation of novel multitargeting anti-AD iron chelators with potent MAO-B inhibitory and antioxidant activity

Xiaoying Jiang,Jianan Guo,Yangjing Lv,Chuansheng Yao,Changjun Zhang,Zhisheng Mi,Yuan Shi,Jinping Gu,Tao Zhou,Renren Bai,Yuanyuan Xie

A series of (3-hydroxypyridin-4-one)-coumarin hybrids were developed and investigated as potential multitargeting candidates for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD) through the incorporation of iron-chelating and monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B) inhibition. This combination endowed the hybrids with good capacity to inhibit MAO-B as well as excellent iron-chelating effects. The pFe 3+ values of the compounds were ranging from 16.91 to 20.16, comparable to more potent than the reference drug deferiprone (DFP). Among them, compound 18d exhibited the most promising activity against MAO-B, with an IC 50 value of 87.9 nM. Moreover, compound 18d exerted favorable antioxidant activity, significantly reversed the amyloid- β 1-42 (A β 1-42 ) induced PC12 cell damage. More importantly, 18d remarkably ameliorated the cognitive dysfunction in a scopolamine-induced mice AD model. In brief, a series of hybrids with potential anti-AD effect were successfully obtained, indicating that the design of iron chelators with MAO-B inhibitory and antioxidant activities is an attractive strategy against AD progression.

Design and fabrication strategy for wear- and corrosion-resistant MAO coatings upon Mg-Li alloys via incorporation of conductive TiBCN ceramic nanoparticles

Bingzhi Li,Bingce Liu,Enyu Guo,Keqiang Su,Zhihao Zhou,Yibo Ouyang,Xingchen Li,Huijun Kang,Zongning Chen,Xiao-Bo Chen,Tongmin Wang

Magnesium-lithium (Mg-Li) alloys are promising lightweight materials for engineering applications, but their use is limited by poor wear and corrosion resistance. To address those challenges, micro-arc oxidation (MAO) coatings were fabricated on Mg-Li alloy LA81 using electrolytes containing conductive ceramic nanoparticles (TiBCN). Results suggest that TiBCN enhances electrolyte conductivity and altering the arc discharge behavior, thereby reducing overall porosity of the resultant MAO coatings. Comprehensive characterization including measurements of coating thickness, microstructure, triboelectrochemical and corrosion resistance identify 2.5   g/L TiBCN as the optimal concentration. This formulation exhibits enhanced corrosion resistance, wear resistance and a notably low pore density. Three-dimensional evolution of corrosion in the optimized MAO coating was examined using synchrotron X-ray computed tomography. In corrosive environments, the combined effects of corrosion and expansion of corrosion products alter size, shape, and number of microdefects in MAO coatings over time. These changes were driven by the interactions between localized corrosion propagation and the accumulation and expansion of corrosion products. Ultimately, neighboring micro-defects merged, forming interconnected through-pores and accelerating MAO coating degradation.
